2 Differential Unit problem of the 2014 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 08/17/2020

I had to replace the rear differential on my passenger side. I had two estimates done was told it's hard for that to go out. I ended paying to have it replaced since the SUV was not drivable.

3 Differential Unit problem of the 2014 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 02/24/2019

While driving 65 mph on the hwy I heard a loud bang and the car rapidly decreased speed. I managed to pull over to the shoulder and the car was leaking fluid from the differential and would no longer go. Was towed to a kia dealer where they determined the rear axles sheared off and put a hole in the differential. Car has 64,00 miles and no pervious issues or warning that anything was wrong.

4 Differential Unit problem of the 2014 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 04/26/2018

While driving 45 miles per hour on a straightaway, I heard a loud bang and then a clunking noise from the rear of the vehicle. I had the vehicle towed to the local kia dealer and it was determined that both axles sheared off and that the rear differential was split, with all fluid leaking out. This 2014 Sorento only has 105,000 miles on it, mainly from highway driving. This was a major safety issue as I lost control of the vehicle. Had I been going faster, the likeliehood of an accident was high.

5 Differential Unit problem of the 2014 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 06/04/2017

While driving at 25 - 30 mph a loud noise sounded from under the car. A repetitive banging sound then occurred. I pulled over to inspect the car but found no damage or anything unusual. When pulling away all was quiet but I then heard the sound of metal grinding noises and a short while later the wheels suddenly locked up. A similar event happened at 24,000 miles and this time at 48,500 miles. Both times the service department stated it was rear differential failure. The first time occurred driving straight on a rural road and the second while going around a slight bend on a rural road. The wheels locking up suddenly on the second differential failure occurred while going down hill on a straight road traveling at less than ten miles per hour while trying to get to a safe location to pull over. I traveled less than 1 mile from when the initial noise was heard. It was raining and the vehicle slid slightly sideways when the wheels locked up. Had I been driving faster an accident likely would have occurred.

6 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 07/22/2016

Rusted brackets posing a dangerous safety risk, 2004 kia Sorento with 162,000 miles. The entire bracket holding the differential rusted through. The frame rear cross member also rusted through causing the control arms is detached from the rear end also creating a safety hazard. There is a design flaw that allows water to stay inside the hollow cross member that caused the corrosion. Drain or weep holes in the cross member and an anti-corrosion coating would have prevented this. When the bracket(s) breaks the rear axle is no longer held in place there are reports on NHTSA where these brackets have rotted away and failed causing loss of control of the vehicle. This is a known design flaw that has been appearing on the older cars where the entire frame and rear end would have to be replaced. There will eventually be more of these failures and there is a potential for fatal accidents from loss of vehicle control. I am aware that in europe kia has been repairing Sorentos.

8 Differential Unit problem of the 2011 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

Having trouble with service dept of local dealer regarding driver's side axle as it enters the drivers side transmission case. Dealer tells me it's normal for this amount of "play" - they say it is designed this way for going over bumps - don't believe them at all as I know that the cv joint handles the bumps. I know that the shaft and the bearing are a very precise fit and there should not be any play. There is a grinding noise when slowing down and a fluttering/clicking noise when I pop the vehicle in neutral at about 50 mph (this is probably the splines on the end of the shaft not mating into the differential correctly - misaligned - because the bearing has failed). Dealer keeps telling us it's either our brakes or tires. They have checked the brakes 4 times already and found nothing but they do acknowledge the grinding noise is still there. This vehicle is dangerous to drive in this condition as the symptoms keep getting worse. It has been at the dealer's service department this time for 6 days already. The vehicle is still under the 100,000 kia drive train warranty (vehicle has 91,000 miles on it). I have sent the video along with this same note to NHTSA. Webmaster@dot. Gov. Would like your opinion of what the amount of movement signifies on the axle as shown in the video - pretty sure it is evidence of a failed bearing (which has led to further damage within to the differential and shaft splines). Thank you!.

9 Differential Unit problem of the 2008 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 10/17/2013

Vehicle made a progressive noise coming from the rear of the van. If sounded like oversized mud tires were on the vehicle. Brought it into the dealership and they said it was the rear differential assembly. The dealership said there were a lot of complaints about the rear differential assembly. This vehicle was bought new by myself and only has 22,508 miles on it. . At the same time the air compressor went out. This was also replaced. These parts should not have failed this early on a new vehicle.

10 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 09/01/2013

Rusted brackets recalled in europe, refused by kia to replace even tho they were rusted under warranty, pose a dangerous safety risk to unsuspecting owners. The entire bracket holding the differential rusted through creating a safety hazard. Presented with a small squeak in rear. I asked kia to send people letters warning and they would not address the request. How kia is getting away with severe rust, causing safety hazards in all vehicles, is beyond me. I know they are less expensive, is it worth it? can someone please address the issue and at least let the public know it is happening before someone gets severely injured or god forbid dies. There are thousands still on the road. I paid for their diagnostic worthlessness to make sure it was documented.

11 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 07/02/2012

Corrosion of rear differential, both left and right arm completely broke off axle assy, unsafe to drive. Repair shop I've used for the last 4 years gave estimate of $1,300. 00 with possible additional cost of up to $500. 00. They suggested I call kia regarding my 10 yr. 100,000 mile warranty. Called kia corporate headquarters for 10 yr. 100,000 mile warranty. Was told I needed to tow it from my repair shop to the nearest kia dealer which was 48 miles away. Service manager after looking at defect told me warranty denied would cost $2,700. 00 (approximate) and could count on an additional $500. 00 to $1,000. 00 when taken apart. Placed another call to kia corp. Headquarters for warranty and was told there is no defect. Damage as a result of salt out of their control, and the service manager had the final say.

12 Differential Unit problem of the 2008 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

I purchased this kia brand new in 2008. Had to take it to the dealership 3 times within the first 6 months because when I reached between 40 and 50mph the vehicle jerked. Was told each time there is nothing wrong. On the final time the service manager rode with me and told me it was the way I drove. I have now had this vehicle for 3 and half years. It has 67,000 miles. I am still having the jerking issue and now the entire rear differential needs to be replaced. I have researched different forums on different websites and have found that this seems to be an issue for a lot of kia Sorento owners. The dealership will not honor my warranty because I did not have the service done at authorized kia service establishment so I had to out of pocket pay $1100 to have my 3 and half year old vehicle fixed. I have owned many new cars and have never had this much of an issue as I have had with a kia with under 100,000 miles on it.

14 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 12/08/2011

The contact owns a 2004 kia sorrento. The contact stated that the vehicle exhibited an abnormally loud noise when driving various speeds. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic and the failure was located at the muffler tail pipe hanger and the rear differential. The mechanic advised that both components were corroded. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and denied assistance due to the mileage on the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 128,000.

15 Differential Unit problem of the 2003 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 12/15/2006

I drive a 2003 kia/sorento/4d. On or about Dec 15 2006 I notice a loud noise an server vibration coming under vehicle. I took SUV to family mechanic. He could not find problem and recommended that I take vehicle to kia dealer. On Dec 27 2006 kia dealer tech initial diag reads 4x4 is staying engaged all the time. Suspected switch failure. Therefore front diff staying engaged all the time. This has caused internal damage to front diff and front propeller shaft. Estimate cost to repair/2,775. 00 I am at a lost cause vehicle is no longer under warranty, but I feel because 4x4 release/engage switch failure that I should not have to endure the financial burden. Repairing this manufactures defect.

16 Differential Unit problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 08/04/2006

2006 kia Sorento ex 4wd, clunking sound in the rear end when you come to a complete stop and then start again. Rear differential went out and was replaced in Aug 2005, but the clunk in the rear end still remains. As of oct 2005 there is also an intermittant sound in the rear end that sounds like the differential is sticking or locking into a positive traction causing one tire to sound and feel like it is sliding on gravel. Previous owner reported same problem "clunk" in the rear end numerous times as well. Possibly a design flaw.

17 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sorento

Failure Date: 08/30/2004

1st- manual transmission, hesitiation of take off. . O-ring replaced. 2nd-clinking noise when shifting gears. . Bearings failing in rear differential was replaced 3rd-felt looseness in emergency brake. . I was told no trouble found 4th-rust on metal parts of headrest. . Dealer to replace. . 5th-metal attachments in trunk area also rusted . . Were not replaced. . 6th-the back defrost plastic protectors were never removed when vehicle was delivered, so when back defrost was used the heat melted the strips which caused condensation build up causing the rust. Gardendale kia of al had my car for five days and I had to find a way to work on my own. I was told they didn't give loaner cars. . Very poor customer service. I believed in the company/product and purchased brand new off the lot with a full warranty and because of bad kia products, I should have been able to get a loaner car. I still have to pay full monthly car note. Customer service is very important to me and I don't feel that I got it. I had to call back to the service to get a status of where they were repairing my vehicle. . I was told it would be 09-01-04 and I did not get a response, so I called on 09-02-04 and was told the part came in but all parts were not included so I had to wait another day 09-03-04. I called at 4:30pm cst to get a status, I was told they were working on it & it would be later that afternoon. This was afternoon, they close at 6:00pm cst. . Needless to say, I got my car at 5:45pm. . I guess it really did not matter to them since they were not getting any money out of me.
