Brake Electric Antilock Problems of Lincoln Town Car - part 1

When vehicle engine is running and turn signals are actuated, the digital dash, turn signals, and air conditioner cuts off. Additionally, steering effort increases substantially, abs cycles off and back on when the power is restored. The duration may be momentary (less than 5 seconds) or last for a minute or longer. Frequency is 80+ percent of the time when the turn signals are engaged (left or right). I have had another Ford vehicle which gave problems with this multi-function switch also. Ford has a poorly designed turn signal-windshield wiper-washer switch compounded by the fact power is shunted through this switch all the time, causing overheating and premature failures. This Lincoln is not an incomplete vehicle. The last line of the vehicle detaill form needs a 2nd alternative or webmaster needs to provide for the default choice (--).

The brakes did not function at 30 miles per hour which caused the consumer to loose control of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they were unable to determine a cause.

On September 11, 2004 while driving and approaching the stop sign at 10 mph consumer applied the brakes and pedal went to the floor. As result, consumer's vehicle was involved in a front collision, which damaged consumer's vehicle and the vehicle in front. Vehicle was taken to the dealership, and technician indicated to consumer that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle.

Vehicle has very poor brakes. Pedal feel is very weak and spongy. Pedal free travel exceeds 4 inches from full release to full engagement. Pedal is 3/4 in. From floorboard when fully engaged. Even on partial engagement the brake pedal is closer to the floorboard than the accelerator pedal. This creates a situation where the driver can be braking and accelerating at the same time. This happened one time at freeway speed. Car has been to dealership 3 times for brake issues and other problems. Dealer states brake function is normal. Dealer also told me not operate vehicle with adjustable pedals in full forward position. Vehicle problems currently subject of arbitration with dispute settlement board in waukesha,WI. Current vehicle mileage 2,347.

When gas pedal was tapped to pull up into a parking space vehicle accelerated at a high speed. When this occurred brake pedal was depressed to slow and stop the vehicle, but it locked up and failed. This resulted in vehicle going over an embankment, down a 5 foot hill, and crashing into a tree. Prior to this incident, twice when making a right turn the brakes locked up. Dealership claimed they couldn't find anything wrong withthe vehicle.

Accident 7/11/04 wife rear ended a Dodge dorango and totaled her Lincoln Town Car. She didn't see thr car stop in front of her quick enough when applying the brakes the car went in a nice straight line but did not have good braking . I found this to be true when driving this car myself . Now we have to pay the price of increased ins. And a bad mark . My wife has never had an accident but there is no room for this in the ins. World even though the car had a engineering problem as so recorded by mycarstats. Com and others. This car and Ford products were ===improved=== in 1999 or 2000 but of course there is no problem.

In wet weather above 40 mph the Town Car weaves erratically left and right upon touching brakes.

Consumer complained about an abs brake problem. The brakes pulsated , and it occurred every 3,000 miles.

After starting vehicle consumer shifted to reverse, suddenly vehicle accelerated on its own. Vehicle came to a stop when it hit a fire hydrant. Damage was $ 3000. 00. On 28, may 2002 ,also at first start, consumer shifted to reverse and vehicle accelerated on it's own. Consumer braked, but was unable to stop vehicle. Vehicle came to stop when it hit a fence. Damage was $ 6700. 00. No injuries.

While applying the brakes, the vehicle would not stop, consumer rearended the back of another vehicle, dealer stated there were no problems with the brake system, consumer states another time while applying the brakes, the brakes did not engage, however this time he took his foot off the brake pedal and reapplied, then vehicle stopped immediately.

When it's raining brakes on vehicle do not work properly, vehicle will start to pull to left or right.

I could not stop the car by braking, a concrete bench held me up from crossing the curb and going on to the sidewalk. I am not sure if it was the accelerator or the brakes .

While driving between 10 and 15 mph on wet pavement and making a turn, vehicle made a "clunking" noise, and abs system locked up, causing vehicle to pull to the right and go off the road. There were no other vehicles involved in this incident, and there were no injuries. Dealership examined vehicle, and stated that abs system had no problems, and this was considered to be normal operation. Please provide any additional information/attachments. The windshield gasket is splitting on the right side of the glass, the front door wont open at times with the remote, the front edge of the vinyl top is coming loose. Nlm.

Total loss of steering and brakes.

Consumer was going 75mph set on cruise control, when approaching a curve conusmer applied brakes to slow down,and as brake pedal was pressed it speeded up vehicle. Consumer was coached from limousine service on a 2- way radio how to control vehicle. Consumer turned cruise control switch off, and vehicle returned to normal drive. Pressing brakes, it sent wrong signal and engaged cruise control.

Consumer was traveling on highway and was coming towards and intersection, went to apply brakes and there were no brakes. Also, there was no steering, forcing him into a guardrail. There were no injuries.

After coming to a stop, foot on brake, vehicle will surge forward, brakes will not stop it. Happened 4 times so far, last time consumer hit another vehicle. Damage to vehicle not known.

When brakes were applied under normal condition pedal went to the floor, resulting in extended stopping distance. Dealer was inspecting vehicle. When the vehicle stopped, the rear wheels started to spin and smoke. Dealer says ther is nothing wrong with the vehicle.

While driving vehicle will lose all electrical functions due to a short. Dealer had vehicle 3-4 months, but could not determine cause . Vehicle has had multiple problems. Out side door panel came off. Brakes are spongy. Windshield failed. Seat malfunctions. Dash lithts and stereo failed at diffeerent times.

Vehicle was parked with engine off. When started, vehicle went approximately 10-14 feet. Attempted to make a u-turn, and put foot on brake pedal, but there were no brakes. Vehicle accelerated out of control. Put vehicle in park and it continued to travel and hit a parked car in the rear, but continued to travel. Finally vehicle was turned off and it stopped. Upon impact , air bags failed to deploy. Drive rsustained injuries, and vehicle was totaled.

When applying brakes on slick surface, right front wheel will lock up and pull the vehicle to the right. This has happened during normal stopping. Also, pedal has to be pushed further down. Since then brakes locked up several times on slick roads/two-lane roads.

Heavy brake pulsation required 5 complete brake jobs in 30000 mi, pulsation develops within 3000 mi after each repair. Appeals to president linc-Mercury either go unanswered or brushed off with "that's normal" for Lincolns, the pulsations cause me even to hestitate to apply the brakes, so it is very dangerous.

When brakes are applied, car pulls to left or right without warning.

Vehicle would vibrate under dash when making a right turn and applying brakes. Vehicle been in dealer shop on four occasions, and unble to fix problem.

Vehicle experienced problem with vibration when brakes were applied due to excessive warping of rotors. Dealer notified, and informed consumer that nothing else could be done at this time. Vibration still present after replacing the rotors.

When applying the brakes, the steering wheel vibrates badly. This condition is worse when it is raining. The dealer not able to correct the problem. Please describe details.

While driving on the highway about 50 mph in the rain, vehicle pulled to the left side when brakes were applied.

While applying the brakes the abs brakes kick in, and the vehicle will not come to a stop. It seems like the harder driver presses on the brake, the pedal comes back up, preventing the veihcle to come to a stop. This does not happen all the times.

The brakes are very noisy.

Anti-lock brakes malfunction at low speeds under 15 pmh, causing left brake/right brake to alternate.

The brakes drag/ pull/ squeak/stick and they are just like rubber when stepping on them, this is on normal road condtions. The system has abs. Consumer statess the engine will stop running frequently, dealer states there is not a problem.

When applying the abs brakes the pedal goes 1 inch to the floor, causing extended stopping distance. Dealer cannot identify any problem. Please give any further details.
