1 Carrier/rack problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 08/03/2020

As I was driving along the interstate, the glass on my sunroof exploded. The weather was about 70 degrees outside and the car is typically garaged except for when I drive it. We did not know at first what had happened and it was extremely frightening as the sound was very loud. There was no previous damage to the sunroof--cracks, etc. And it was a factory-installed sunroof. As you will see from the photos, the glass exploded from the inside out.

2 Carrier/rack problem of the 2019 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/14/2020

The vehicle was parked outside, behind my house off of an alley in a private parking space where it had been unmoved for three days. It had snowed over the past two days. The temperature was in the 20's. The car is two months old (1171 miles). I raised the rear hatch to retrieve a snow brush. Rear hatch closed. I started to walk towards the passenger door when I heard a loud cracking sound. Then the rear window self-destructed. It just fell to pieces. I do not want to dwell on the serious problems this might have caused if the self-destructing window had occurred 10 minutes later when I was going to be driving on a highway.

3 Carrier/rack problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/25/2019

Large fish hook shaped crack on windshield of my 2016 Mazda Cx-5 with 23000 mles. The crack appeared on a 55 degree morning after I pulled my vehicle out of the garage and drove half a block to a stop sign and I watched the crack appear. The crack starts at the top center edge of the windshield goes down about 6 inches, then goes into the view of the driver. It was about 18 inches that morning and has grown to about 30 inches and a huge fish hook shape in the view of the driver. I went to the dealer and was told it was caused by a stone impact. It was not an impact, I should know, I was driving. The dealer also told me that it was not covered under warranty, even if it is a defective windshield or installation at the factory. With a little research I am seeing a lot of Cx-5 owners are reporting similar issues with the windshields cracking for no apparent reason. This is a safety concern the NHTSA needs to investigate.

4 Carrier/rack problem of the 2018 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 11/14/2018

Sudden windshield cracking 11-14-2018 our 2018 cx5 has 7500 miles and driving at night with very little traffic on the freeway in southern California the windshield just cracked from the center down approx. 5 inches , there is no sign that it was hit by a stone or rock . I have owned a 2015 Mazda cx5 and the same problem happened with that vehicle. I have been following Mazda forums and finding out there are many people throughout the country experiencing this same issue . There is no bullet hole type mark to indicate a stone or rock hit windshield.

6 Carrier/rack problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 03/10/2018

Twice in 1 year I've had small stones cause a crack in the front windshield. The first crack was caught before it spread and was repaired. Another small stone must have hit my windshield. Today while shopping I returned to my vehicle, that was parked facing a storefront, to see a 14. 5 inch crack across the driver's side. The crack obstructs the driver's line of vision. I consider two small stones causing damage unusual. I've been driving over 45 years and have never dad to repair or replace a windshield.

7 Carrier/rack problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 12/28/2017

I was driving at around 45-50 mph when I heard loud pop, and noticed small chip the size of a pencil lead in the top middle of the windshield. Then another loud pop and the crack appeared down the middle toward passenger side from the chip. There were no cars around that could've caused the damage (I. E. Debris or construction trucks, etc) and I wasn't going fast enough that could cause the chip and crack that big. Never had this kind of experience with prior cars I've owned. Yes, I might have had chips here and there but never cracked so easily like the current one, especially at the speed I was traveling.

8 Carrier/rack problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 05/28/2017

A stone from a weed-eater hit my windshield as I was driving (~25 mph) and within 5 miles the crack was already 18 inches. In searching online I noticed a lot of owners mentioned windshield problems and how thin the windshield is. I would have expected a slight chip but not the crack. The temperature was mid 70's.

9 Carrier/rack problem of the 2014 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 07/29/2016

Complained to Mazda that my driver side window rattles when driviing and driver side mirror shakes at 50 miles per hour. They told me there is no recall. Also I got a stress crack in my windshied started from bottom of windshield in the middle and turned right. The car was parked and in my driveway when this happened.

10 Carrier/rack problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 06/24/2016

I parked my 2 month old Cx-5 in the garage, came out the next morning and the windshield was cracked, by the time I got to work the crack had spread, within 3 days it was half way across the windshield. I took it to 2 different glass replacement companies and 1 body shop and all 3 places said the crack was body frame related, I. E. Not my fault. I took it the Mazda dealership I purchased it from and they said it was my problem and that it would be not covered under warranty or it would cost $750 to replace. To make it more of an inconvience there are only 3 or 4 places you can get he factory windshields from and they are on the east coast on back order (might have a problem there) for a month.

11 Carrier/rack problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 10/01/2015

I am so upset with Mazda right now. I have a fully loaded Cx-5 grand touring with everything that could be added. However, my navigation had been recalled within the first week and 2 weeks later I had a huge crack on my windshield. This crack is the weirdest thing I have ever seen. My dealer said it had to be a rock, but I parked my car and after school I came out to this really long crack. I have researched this and many of us are all having the same problem. The windshield is on back order and is super expensive. This is crazy and Mazda should pay at least half of the price. I have never had so many problems with a car. I have had 5 Mazda's and this one is a lemon.

12 Carrier/rack problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 08/12/2015

Car was parked while at work, came out to find the windshield cracked, right down the middle. No rock chips anywhere to be found. Took it to the dealership they contacted a Mazda rep who agreed it was a defect. I was relieved to hear that, but very dissatisfied that the replacement windshield is on back order for a couple months. The windshield is cracked badly enough that I do not feel comfortable letting my pregnant wife drive it. We bought this larger vehicle to fit a baby carrier, now the baby will be here before the windshield. This puts us in a tight spot, we have a brand new vehicle we can not drive. I understand the dealerships not at fault and they were very friendly, and helpful. I am glad they agreed to replace it, but still out of a vehicle for almost 3 months without a rental is crazy.

13 Carrier/rack problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 07/19/2015

The car was parked over the weekend in a very secluded county location (no other people around). I noticed a large crack in the front windshield two days later when I next used the car. There are no visible chips on the glass. The crack spread outward from where the rear view mirror is attached. I believe this is a factory installation or defective part issue.

14 Carrier/rack problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 06/05/2015

While driving on the highway, we noticed a crack that began at the bottom center of our new Cx-5's windshield. There had been no impact by a rock or anything else. It began at the very edge of the windshield, and went upwards. We were on a weekend trip, and there was no nearby Mazda dealer. Over the miles the straight crack grew into question mark shape about 10" high. Arriving at our destination, the dealer claimed there was a tiny impact mark exactly underneath the wiper blade. I was not able to see anything except the crack, and I know there was no impact of any type. This was a Friday, and the dealer said the glass couldn't be there until the following week -- by which time we would have returned home -- so we drove home a couple of days later and spoke with the dealer who sold us the car [note that it was about 3 weeks old -- practically new]. Our dealer [north point Mazda, in sherwood ar] also claims there is an invisible impact mark. Of course, with an impact, they avoid all responsibility. Looking at this database, there seem to be a lot of people in the same situation as mine -- new Cx-5 owners developing a mystery cracked windshield. This is expensive glass -- it has sensors for the wipers, etc. And now the glass is on backorder, so will take a month to arrive! over the miles the crack has grown in size, and has also branched out. I wonder when my new vehicle actually becomes unsafe to drive? Mazda says it's not their problem, and their service manager and general manager have both declined to even return my call. Clearly they aren't proponents of service after the sale! hopefully the rest of the car holds up better -- we really like it except for the giant, multi-branch windshield crack that we now have to live with for another month! of course, north point Mazda won't be getting any more of my business. . . . Updated 07-16-15.

15 Carrier/rack problem of the 2015 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 03/29/2015

Cracked windshield we were filling up gas at a gas station & suddenly we heard a pop sound. I tried to go around the car & see what happened but did not notice anything. The car was still pumping gas when this happened. Next day, there was nothing in the morning but after parking at work for couple hours & coming back to the car, we noticed a big crack on the screen.

16 Carrier/rack problem of the 2015 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/21/2015

I was driving my new 2015 cx 5 grand touring today when I heard a loud pop. I looked down and saw a 24 inch crack in my windshield extending from the lower drivers side to the middle. There is no sign of a chip and the windshield appeared to be in perfect condition. After looking at this site, I noticed this is a common problem with this vehicle. The dealership indicated that because it is considered wear and tear, there is nothing they can do about this. As common as this seems to be with this vehicle I would have hoped for some assistance from Mazda in addressing the issue.

17 Carrier/rack problem of the 2014 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/17/2015

2014 Mazda cx5, heard a pop and noticed the windshield was cracked. The crack started from the base, center of windshield, and traveled vertical approx 12-15 inches. There was no rock or gravel strike, no visible chip. This is a recurring issue with other Mazda cx5's.

18 Carrier/rack problem of the 2015 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 04/28/2014

2 weeks after the purchase of a new 2015 Mazda cx5 we noticed a crack in the windshield. Exactly on the top portion of the windshield in the middle coming down to a t. We took the car to the dealer of purchase and a service employee looked at it started digging in a spot and stated that a rock must of hit the windshield because he found a hole. Not satisfied with that answer the supervisor for the service department was called and upon looking at the windshield he pointed to a complete different spot and then pointed to a third spot that he claimed was a hole. How does a windshield of a brandnew car never on the expressway have 3 impact spots that are exactly in the middle of the windshield and with that refused to pay for the replacement. Since the windshield is not available anywhere but the dealership I am no responsible for the repair of something that was a defect.

19 Carrier/rack problem of the 2014 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 04/27/2014

When I got in my car I noticed a mark in the center of on my windshield just under the rear view mirror. I realized it was a crack and when I got out to inspect it discovered that is was about 6 inches. It was hidden from the inside by all the rear view mirror attachments. I couldn't locate where something had hit the windshield. The safelite tech who came out to see if it needed to be repaired or replaced said she had never seen such a clean crack and said it was too large to repair. I was unable to get it replaced before going out of town for several weeks. When I got back the crack had grown another 12 inches just while sitting outside. It was in the sun for part of each day. The technician who replaced my windshield ran a ball point pen down the crack and it did hit a spot that apparently was from something hitting the windshield, but you couldn't see it just by looking. The number of instances of this happening makes it appear that Mazda is manufacturing inferior windshields. I have never seen or heard of a windshield that would crack that rapidly or cleanly.

20 Carrier/rack problem of the 2015 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 12/06/2013

Have had the car for approximately a month and have gotten 2 large chips in the windshield from unheard and unseen objects. Upon attempt to repair by glass repair company the windshield proceeded to crack over 15 inches. I am replacing the windshield with non oem glass as there appears to be an issue with the oem glass considering the multiple reports by other owners.
