Mazda CX-5 owners have reported 163 problems related to wiper (under the visibility category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Mazda CX-5 based on all problems reported for the CX-5.
The driver side mirror vibrates at speeds above 65 miles per hour especially with windy conditions. Went to the dealer they replaced the mirror assembly with the issue still remaining. Mazda answer is that is common in cx 5 models. It is a safety issue as it really limits visibility for vehicles behind.
Monday I walked outside and my vehicles back windshield was broken. Oddly enough, there was a big hole on both ends, but the middle began to disintegrate. I got a new glass installed on Wednesday and Thursday morning. I went to get in my car and the new glass was broken. The tech told me that Honda had a recall for the defroster wires having the same issue, causing the back windshield to break. Although I had not been running my defroster for several months, he said the wires were getting hot even though they were turned off and shattering the windows. Since this is the second windshield that has busted in a week, I assume that Mazda is having the same issue however they have not yet issued a recall.

The driver-side power door mirror on my 2023 Mazda Cx-5 vibrates excessively at highway speeds above 75 mph, especially on windy days. The vibration is so severe that it causes a blurred and distorted view, making it difficult to clearly see vehicles in adjacent lanes. This poses a significant safety risk, as it impairs my ability to make safe lane changes and monitor surrounding traffic. I brought the issue to the attention of my Mazda dealership during a scheduled service appointment, but they dismissed it as "normal" and quoted approximately $700 to replace the mirror - despite the fact that this appears to be a known issue with Mazda vehicles. Numerous owners of recent Mazda models have reported similar problems online, yet Mazda has not issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) for the 2023 Cx-5. I am attaching a previous TSB (09-002/13) that Mazda released for earlier Cx-5 models (2013–2014), which addressed the same mirror vibration issue through structural reinforcement and mirror replacement. This suggests the problem may still persist in newer models. The mirror is available for inspection upon request. No warning lights or messages were displayed, and the issue began shortly after I started driving the vehicle on highways. Link to previous TSB - https://static. Nhtsa. The windshield on our new 2025 Mazda Cx-5 is defective. Objects viewed through the windshield are distorted, to include the active driver’s display (colloquially known as the hud). Drivers and passengers are impeded from clearly seeing and focusing on objects visible throughout the front of the vehicle. Objects to include road signs are distorted, lose clarity which result in unnecessary and dangerous distractions. This problem significantly degrades the vehicle’s usability, safety and ultimate enjoyment.
Car will slam on brakes even if car is in opposite lane farther away. We have received sooo many chips amd cracks on windshield with 2 weeks. We purchased used and was informed windshield was replaced once already.

The side mirror defrosters are not operable. This is an extreme safety hazard to be able to see my surroundings while driving. This function should operate when the rear defroster is activated and is not working. I cleared the side mirror prior to leaving my house, during driving the mirror frosted back over causing me to not see other vehicles. The alert when a car is next to me would not function due to ice build up. If a crash were to happen due to the safety features not properly working, this could cause issues. This seems it should come standard on all Mazda vehicles considering there safety satisfaction. This is the third Mazda I've owned and I've never had a complaint until now.

Front windshield wipers stopped working, front windshield washer still working. Fuse was checked, fuse is good. Vehicle is available for inspection upon request. My safety is put at risk because of lack of visibility when driving in rain. The problem has been confirmed by a Mazda dealership. The vehicle and the components have been inspected by a Mazda dealership. No warning lights or messages appeared before or after the front windshield wipers stopped working. So if a person is driving the car, there is no indication that the front windshield wipers will not work if it starts raining and the driver would need to use the front windshield wipers. This is a safety hazard because the driver will not be able to see, possibly causing an accident. This Mazda cx5 does not have automatic front windshield wipers (they do not come on automatically when it starts raining).

Display went dark and did not display. This is not the only time it happens. It acts like someone’s touching the screen even when in motion. It prevents the reverse camera from displaying.

The controls on the windshield wiper/headlight control stalk are not visible when driving at night. The setting markings on the control stalk are completely dark at night. This creates a safety hazard when driving at night in the rain and turning on your windshield wipers or changing your headlight settings is needed.
Front windshield wipers not working, bcm failed.
The rear windshield wiper stops working while driving in a rainstorm. This has happened twice. The wiper works for 30-60 minutes and then stops. Was inoperable for the remaining 4 hours of the trip. When we took the car in for troubleshooting the 1st time, they could not reproduce the problem. After the second time the dealer was able to reproduce the problem. It appears to be related to the operating time and not the rain. Searching online discovered numerous Mazda cx5 owners reported the same issue. Our safety was at risk since we could not see out the rear windshield. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms that warned us the wiper had stopped working. We noticed it had stopped by looking out the rear view mirror.
When you are driving in rainy weather on a highway the side view mirrors and windows fog up and you can't see. Putting on the defroster doesn't help. You have to drive with the windows open. On most cars if you open the windows the water would be evaporated from the rubber on the windows. The rubber is not thick enough on the front windows to do this. Bought it to a dealer and they said the same thing as far as the front windows are.
The driver's side mirror tends to vibrate or shake more than the passenger side mirror, especially at speeds above 50-60 mph or in windy conditions. It has been a common complaint among Mazda owners for quite a while, and it seems to be a design flaw that Mazda has not yet addressed with a permanent solution.
Exact same issues as NHTSA recall no. 19v-272 -- manufacturer recall no. 3219d. -- affected p/n: tk52-675xo b.

The sunroof exploded. Exploded. Sound was shocking. I did not know what it was. The sound of the outside from the sunroof clued me in. The "shade" underneath the sunroof was closed so I did not see it happen.
There is a pressure crack that goes almost all the way across my front windshield, there are no chips or dings in the glass. Second you can smell gas fumes near the back of the car but no gas is leaking.

The side mirrors fold in and out automatically. Sometimes they will not open to driving position, leaving the driver without the ability to check them for lane changes. This is a common problem with the automatic mirrors on Mazda vehicles. I have had them repaired once under warranty, but the issue persists. The second issue is the automatic emergency braking. It has activated a few times without need or warning. I have come close to being rear-ended because of this and received negative feedback from other drivers that were following me (use your imagination).
Folding side mirror will not open all the way, causing a safety concern when driving.
Heating element on front windscreen burning and smoking causing windscreen to crack and is very obviously defective.

The sunroof spontaneously exploded outward while my wife was driving on the interstate. She was not near other vehicles or under an overpass for flying debris. We have had the vehicle for only 9 months and she works from home so it is kept in a garage for the majority of its life. It has not encountered any hail damage either. The sun shade was closed thankfully so my wife was fine but the anxiety it has caused her is immeasurable. This is a common occurrence as can be seen by any google search indicating many people experiencing this issue. Most auto makers are not accepting responsibility for defects in manufacturing. The NHTSA has a duty to keep people safe and hold auto makers accountable for problems they are manufacturing. Exploding sunroofs are not safe and it is a major problem in the industry. There are countless testimonials and legal action being taken about this issue.
In September of 2023, while driving I attempted to use the windshield wipers, and they would not function. We live in a rainy part of the country, so having non working wipers is a major safety issue. Research for possible causes pointed to the body control module which had been recalled on Mazda 3s in recent years. I took the car to the dealership, and they traced the problem to an internal failure of the body control module. I do not have the component to inspect, and I do not know what the dealership did with it after removal. We filed a complaint with Mazda in October of 2023. They gave us case #001-463-33. They were not receptive to feedback, and simply stated many times that there was not a current recall for our vehicle. There were no warning signs/messages/ lights before the wipers stopped working, and they had worked normally the day before.
On April 15th, 2019, Mazda made the public aware of recall campaign 3219d which involves a failure of the front body control module on Mazda 3 vehicles, which renders the front windshield wipers inoperable. That document indicates that the part number of replacement for the faulty module is kdy5-67-5xx. On July 10th, 2023, a Mazda dealership serviced a 2017 Mazda Cx-5 as the windshield wipers were not functioning. They determined that the front body control module was faulty and causing the issue. With the new module, part number bays-67-5xx, the issue is resolved. The above part numbers are remarkably similar, especially given the added factor that the front body control module of this vehicle failed in the exact same way as is described in the recall. Mazda, in their filing of the part 573 safety recall report for campaign 3219d for the Mazda 3, indicated that there may still be an issue with the wiper motor's "condenser" (sic, capacitor) being undersized. Mazda refused to reimburse for these repairs when detailed and requested in writing.
On my Mazda Cx-5, the auto-folding side mirrors began failing to open fully, resulting in poor visibility. It is possible that the mirrors may become fully folded and unable to open resulting in compromised awareness when driving. It is not possible to force the mirrors open without risking damage to the internal mechanism and no guarantee the mirrors would stay open. This seems to be related to bulletin no. : 09-011/20, however service centers are declining to fix this outside of warranty. There are numerous cases of this happening documented on Mazda forums and online groups, and the service associate admitted to me that just the day before someone had come in for an identical problem, but the owner declined to pay for a nearly $2000 fix.
I was driving my new 2023 Mazda cx5 with approximately 1,300 miles in the center lane of a divided highway of the suburbs just north of new york city. I was driving with all windows closed, a/c turned on and the weather was clear, hot and sunny. Without any warning there was a loud and abrupt explosion from within the vehicle. As I looked in my rear view mirror I saw glass blowing in the wind behind me. I suddenly detected wind blowing above my head and realized my sunroof had most likely been the glass I saw behind me. I kept the sunshade closed with one hand until I could safely pull over to look. I did not suspect any road debris to have caused the breaking of the glass and my inspection did not reveal any other damage or possible outside causes. This even appeared to have been spontaneous and without warning. I feel that this incident could have been a lot worse had the sunshade been open, most likely blowing little pieces of glass into my eyes while driving at highway speeds in a center lane. I also fear that this could have been a hazard to my children passengers if they were in the back seat at the time it happened. I notified my Mazda dealership at the earliest possible moment and they asked to inspect it. After inspection, a regional service manager advised that this type of incident has been heard of but only in southern warmer states and typically on hot sunny days when the air conditioning is on inside the vehicle. Apparently the temperature difference coupled with cabin pressure and any sort of defects in the glass can make the glass explode upward. Date/time of incident 6/11/23 @ 5pm est. Date of repair by dealership: 6/15/23.
I purchased this vehicle used and with 35,000 miles on it, took it to Mazda for an oil change. The windshield wipers never seemed to work that well, and Mazda told me that the actual wiper arms (not blades) were installed on the wrong sides of the windshield (driver arm was on the passenger side, and passenger arm was on the driver side). I removed them arms and reinstalled on the correct side and now the wipers work fine. I am reporting this as I assume they were installed incorrectly when the vehicle was manufactured, and I'm concerned that other vehicles may be affected.
1. The airbag sensor is not working. The warning signal continually flashes. My shop had airbag system analyzed. Test results showed it is not calibrated correctly. My Mazda dealer, luther premier Mazda, said it is an electrical problem, and I will have to pay for analysis. I paid for this analysis when sallas had it diagnosed. 2. Due to problems with the windshield, I paid for a replacement myself, not knowing there was a recall. I want Mazda to install a Mazda windshield and calibrate the safety systems.
While I was driving on the highway at 60 mph the glass sunroof exploded with a loud bang. Luckily the sunroof shade was closed, otherwise shards of glass would have fallen on me causing injury and possible loss of control of the car. I immediately reported the incident to my insurance company and the next day brought the car into the Mazda dealership. The service manager claims he never heard of sun roofs exploding and there were no outstanding recalls on sunroofs. I left the car at the dealer for further inspection by Mazda.
Rear video camera / back-up camera display malfunction: the display in the dashboard continuously resets, causing the view from the back-up camera to disappear completely or dim to to the point where it is not viewable. This causes a safety hazard when backing up and often occurs once the vehicle is already in motion. Mazda dealer's service center reports Mazda is aware that this is a new, widespread problem, but to check for updates in 4 weeks.
The windshield defrost only works for the center part of the windshield given that there is only a single center defrost vent. Vision is severely impaired during rainy or snowy days (worse during nights) while driving and it makes the driving very dangerous. You can only see what is in front of you, but very limited side views due to the fog on both sides of the windshield. Attached is a pic of the windshield when I came back from a 2 mile errand run while the defrost vent was at full scale constantly.
On this model of Mazda, they only manufactured it with 1 small center defrost vent on the windshield, and nothing on the sides. Therefore the windshield only gets defrosted in the center, not in front of the driver. I live in the pacific northwest and it rains a lot which results in foggy windows, I feel it is extremely unsafe driving a car that doesn’t defrost the full windshield, more importantly in front of the drivers view. I have severely degraded visibility 80% of the time I’m driving because of how poorly designed defrost ducts are.
At high speeds, air enters through the front windshield from outside of the car and into the cabin, making a whistling sound. It seems the problem is with the windshield design or fit.
Windshield wiper stopped working all of a sudden.
One day last month, my front winsheild wipers were going very slowly when I turned them on the auto setting (maybe 1/4 of normal speed, which is not correct). If I switched it to lo or hi they worked fine. A couple of days later the wipers always wiped in the very slow mode (1/4 of the speed of normal wipers), then after a 1/2 hour of driving they stopped altogether. It was raining quite hard at the time and I could not see through the winsheild, so I had to pull over anytime there was someone behind me and roll down the windows so I could see. I had my 11 year old son in the car with me and was terrified we could have been hurt or I could have run into someone or another vehicle because I could not see. I was close enough to limp along slowly and drove to the nearest Mazda dealer. They ended up replacing my vehicle's front bcm (body control module) which cost me $550 and that has fixed the issue. This is the same issue to the Mazda 3's that were recalled recently.
2016 Mazda Cx-5 windshield wipers - correctly operating windshield wipers have four modes: single wipe, intermittent wipe, slow continuous wipe, high speed continuous wipe. One morning (September, 2021) used the single wipe mode to clear overnight accumulated moisture (car parked outside) but wiper made five passes instead of one and then stopped in an 'up' or 'non-parked' position. Tried the other three modes and all three behaved the same way, five wiper passes and then the wipers stopped, sometimes upright blocking forward vision, sometimes at an angle, but never in the 'parked' position. Driving in rain or snow requires activating the wipers every 30 seconds or so (approximate time of 5 wipes). Have had the wiper motor (which includes a circuit board) replaced twice to no avail. Today had wiper switch replaced, again to no avail. This problem seems to be similar to windshield wiper problem reported regarding 2016-2018 Mazda cx-3's.
This is a follow up to NHTSA complaint id number 11442992: after doing a fair amount of research the problem was deemed to be the front body control module. A new replacement was ordered (about $250). It took about 1-1/2 to 2 weeks for the module to be received and about an hour for its installation. So far the wipers seem to be working correctly although they have yet been 'used', only tested. Googling "Mazda wiper problem" you will find others reporting similar problems with the body control module. . Read more...
