One day last month, my front winsheild wipers were going very slowly when I turned them on the auto setting (maybe 1/4 of normal speed, which is not correct). If I switched it to lo or hi they worked fine. A couple of days later the wipers always wiped in the very slow mode (1/4 of the speed of normal wipers), then after a 1/2 hour of driving they stopped altogether. It was raining quite hard at the time and I could not see through the winsheild, so I had to pull over anytime there was someone behind me and roll down the windows so I could see. I had my 11 year old son in the car with me and was terrified we could have been hurt or I could have run into someone or another vehicle because I could not see. I was close enough to limp along slowly and drove to the nearest Mazda dealer. They ended up replacing my vehicle's front bcm (body control module) which cost me $550 and that has fixed the issue. This is the same issue to the Mazda 3's that were recalled recently.
2016 Mazda Cx-5 windshield wipers - correctly operating windshield wipers have four modes: single wipe, intermittent wipe, slow continuous wipe, high speed continuous wipe. One morning (September, 2021) used the single wipe mode to clear overnight accumulated moisture (car parked outside) but wiper made five passes instead of one and then stopped in an 'up' or 'non-parked' position. Tried the other three modes and all three behaved the same way, five wiper passes and then the wipers stopped, sometimes upright blocking forward vision, sometimes at an angle, but never in the 'parked' position. Driving in rain or snow requires activating the wipers every 30 seconds or so (approximate time of 5 wipes). Have had the wiper motor (which includes a circuit board) replaced twice to no avail. Today had wiper switch replaced, again to no avail. This problem seems to be similar to windshield wiper problem reported regarding 2016-2018 Mazda cx-3's.

This is a follow up to NHTSA complaint id number 11442992: after doing a fair amount of research the problem was deemed to be the front body control module. A new replacement was ordered (about $250). It took about 1-1/2 to 2 weeks for the module to be received and about an hour for its installation. So far the wipers seem to be working correctly although they have yet been 'used', only tested. Googling "Mazda wiper problem" you will find others reporting similar problems with the body control module. . Read more...
Driving on the interstate. Driver plus 3 passengers, fair amount of luggage. Listening to a book on cd. Windows up, air-conditioning on. Driving 70 mph smooth road. No cars in immediate vicinity. Suddenly there is a loud bang which scared the crap out of me. Pulled off the roadway to see what had happened. Turned out the moon roof had exploded. Fortunately the inside cover was closed otherwise the occupants would have been shredded by a glass grenade.
The front wipers stopped working. Fuse is ok. No power to wiper motor. Washer still works. Rear wiper works.
Plastic molding at bottom of windshield came loose. And for sometime o explained to dealership I heard what sounded like glass shifting and felt that the glass was going to shatter. This morning I noticed windshield cracked on outside from top middle past review mirror. Vehicle was parked in driveway and when I walked to my car I noticed crack. The plastic molding was not supporting glass in place. And rubber strip around glass is lifted as reflected in picture.

My sunroof just exploded while I was driving down the road. I have a dash cam which captured absolutely nothing impacting the glass. It just burst.
I was driving on the highway at about 65mph and heard a loud pop. I was unsure what it could have been, but knew it came from the roof area. I opened the slider to the sunroof. The glass had exploded!! I pulled over to assess the damage and noticed the glass exploded outward. I have pictures showing the hole in the glass as well as the shards (held together by safety coating) pointing up and away from the car from having exploded out.

The outside mirrors failed to rotate open, and you could not see behind the vehicle. The mirrors rotate inward when the doors are locked and are supposed to open fully when the doors are unlocked. These outside mirrors can freeze when rotated in during freezing temperatures. When the vehicle is unlocked, the mirrors if frozen, can be kept from rotating out to the locked position. This condition causes the mirror motor assembly to fail and that prevents the mirrors from rotating to the outboard and locked position. Latter year models have an added option to turn the rotating feature off but no retrofit option was added to earlier model yesrs.
Sunroof unexpectedly and randomly exploded while driving. There was no impact, glass shattered without notice and produced a very loud explosion similar to the sound of a gun shot. This occurred while driving on the highway at 70mph with outside temperature at approx. 49 degree fahrenheit, and no rain. Dash cam footage confirms no debris were thrown at the car and this happened unexplainably. Had sunroof visor been open, shards of glass would have rained down on driver and passenger. The experience of hearing a loud explosion while driving is very startling and unsafe, especially with the potential for glass shards to fall onto the driver and passengers.
Windshield glass spontaneously cracked from bottom where defrosting vent is located, arcing upward across driivers field of view occupying 3/4 of windshield height- driven to work with no problem and crack was present at end of work shift no impacts occured no other damage -parked in monitored hospital parking garage.

I have a 2017 Mazda cx5 touring model, with 39k miles. The windshield wipers failed on 10/16/2020. My dealer picked up my car today, and determined that the body control module failed. Since my car was out of original warranty, I had to pay the $100 deductible from the extended warranty purchased when the care was new, from the Mazda dealer. Now, considering the 187,000 Mazda 3's recalled for the same failure, I am outraged that I had to pay anything for this repair. If this failure happened while driving in snow or rain, the safety of my family would have been at significant risk. This failure came out of no where, there were no prior issues with the front windshield wipers. I was at a local lowes shopping, and when I went to clean the windshield, the fluid dispensed, but the wipers would not activate. I did change the proper fuse, but that had no positive effect. Also, I noted that 187,000 Mazda 3 models were recalled for the same module failure.
Tl- the contact owns a 2015 Mazda Cx-5. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph the glass sunroof suddenly exploded. During the failure the sunroof was closed and a loud explosion had occurred. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer eldorado Mazda located at 2150 n. Central express way mckinney TX. But the cause of the failure was not determined. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not yet notified. The failure mileage was 77,000. Jft ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly; 4 - VIN corrected, error in one position only (indicated by ! in suggested VIN), multiple matches found; 14 - unable to provide information for all the characters in the VIN. #vpic#.

Rear drums and caliper failures at 20,000 miles.
There was a large crack on my front windshield that spanned from the driver's side to the passenger side. When I went to locate the possible point of the crack I couldn't locate one. I took my vehicle to an windshield repair shop to get it replaced and was told that this was a stress crack that is pretty common in Mazda Cx-5's.
Windshield wiper water pump failure.
A small chip was on found on the front of the windshield and I was notified by the dealer that the chip was small and that they the repair would fix it with resin. The next day a crack around 18 inches formed along the windshield. . After the crack was formed they stated they weren't responsible for the windshield after the repair. This is a defect in the quality of the windshield Mazda won't hold themselves responsible for. This new windshield has been quoted for $500 to replace.
While driving down the highway in my 2017 cx5, the sunroof exploded sending glass throughout the car. It was a sunny day, and no apparent debris flew up from the road. Extremely scary incident.
Front windshield has crack running down windshield starting at very top of windshield behind the rear view mirror. Car was parked over night in my driveway and next morning crack has appeared. Crack runs down about 12 inches and hooks to the side. Car did not experience any road debries or extreme conditions to validate the mysterious crack. Upon further research have learned that several owners have experienced the same issue of a windshield crack with no explination. Mazda will not cover any warranty and will not accept that they have a windshield issue.
I was driving on the freeway when I heard a loud sound above me, followed by suddenly feeling wind coming into the vehicle as well as hearing glass roll off the top of the car. When I was able to safely pull over I saw that there was a huge hole in the sunroof but no other damage. There were no dents or scratches anywhere on the top of the car where I heard the sound come from. The remaining glass was angled upwards as if the glass had exploded. Luckily I had the slider under the glass closed so no glass made it inside the vehicle as I was driving. Had it not been closed it could have potentially injured myself or my two children or potentially caused a collision.
Cracked windshield. No vehicles in front of me, on a city street. Temperature outside 48-50 degrees, inside temperature 70 degrees. 9:10 a. M. It rained 1/2 hour earlier. Cold morning.
Had an incident were the passenger side window just cracked into pieces while driving down the highway. Nobody was injured but we were not sure what may have caused this (there were no cars adjacent to us and in the lanes further).
Windshield cracks too easy on 2019 Mazda Cx-5. The car is 2019 and has already had 7 separate incidents (crack and or chip). Mazda knows of the problem and there are many Mazda customers that have reported problems with the integrity of the windshield. It's very concerning because it could be a safety issue if the windshield cracks so easy especially with all the objects and debris on the road that bigger vehicles like trucks kick up. I don't feel safe.
My allstate rep told me that I have 4 recalls.
Large fish hook shaped crack on windshield of my 2016 Mazda Cx-5 with 23000 mles. The crack appeared on a 55 degree morning after I pulled my vehicle out of the garage and drove half a block to a stop sign and I watched the crack appear. The crack starts at the top center edge of the windshield goes down about 6 inches, then goes into the view of the driver. It was about 18 inches that morning and has grown to about 30 inches and a huge fish hook shape in the view of the driver. I went to the dealer and was told it was caused by a stone impact. It was not an impact, I should know, I was driving. The dealer also told me that it was not covered under warranty, even if it is a defective windshield or installation at the factory. With a little research I am seeing a lot of Cx-5 owners are reporting similar issues with the windshields cracking for no apparent reason. This is a safety concern the NHTSA needs to investigate.
Windows keep freezing shut. Never have owned a vehicle that has had this issue. This is not only an inconvenience trying to swipe a rfid card to get into a secure parking facility but a major safety issue should there be an emergency that requires the window to be rolled down (I. E. To escape sinking car, make contact with leo, etc). The vehicle has been brought to the dealer and they didn't find anything wrong. Its been happening since the vehicle was new.

Sudden windshield cracking 11-14-2018 our 2018 cx5 has 7500 miles and driving at night with very little traffic on the freeway in southern California the windshield just cracked from the center down approx. 5 inches , there is no sign that it was hit by a stone or rock . I have owned a 2015 Mazda cx5 and the same problem happened with that vehicle. I have been following Mazda forums and finding out there are many people throughout the country experiencing this same issue . There is no bullet hole type mark to indicate a stone or rock hit windshield.
New car with 500 miles. Parked car in a parking lot and the next morning there was a chip and crack about 6 inches long on the windshield. Did something hit it like a rock? maybe, but the windshield seems to crack easier than normal based on all the complaints online.
Driving on a 25 mph residential street windshield went pop and a spider web of cracks appeared in the lower passenger side of the windshield and spread to the middle of the windshield. No sign of anything that hit it. Outside temp is 90 degrees and running air conditioner. . No previous sign of chip or ding from rocks. . Car only has 7500 miles on it and is garaged every day. . Lots of comments on Mazda forum about bad /thin windshields on cx 5s. .
The vehicle was parked in a driveway when a basketball bounced off the hood of the car and then hit the windshield. There was no damage to the hood but when the basketball hit the windshield it shattered the right top side of the windshield.
Sunroof glass explosion sunroof spontaneously exploded while driving 65 mph on an empty highway. Internal sunroof cover shielded any debris. Outside conditions: cloudy day, around 85 degrees and humid. Rain in forecast. Other details: speed limit was 70 mph. Glass shattered and a portion blew up and out of the vehicle. No other vehicles were present. Extremely loud boom followed by sound of air flowing into vehicle (like an open window). When opening the cover to see what it was, pieces of glass fell into the vehicle. Currently undergoing getting repairs under insurance.
I recently bought a used 2016 Mazda Cx-5. Five days later, I went to get in it after work (not a hot day) and found a crack running from under the top seam straight down and then feathering out. No impact damage. Parked in a secured lot. It didn't look right, so I looked up Mazda windshields and found out others had the same issue. I found the crack distracting as I drove, especially if I needed to look over to the right side. Took my car to Mazda the following day. They agreed it looked strange, but said they were unaware of any windshield issues. And yet I found many others on line had the same issue.
Front passenger window completely shattered when driving on the highway. No apparent rock or debris hit the window before the glass completely disintegrated. A loud bang was heard as the glass shattered from the center. Unsure as to longevity / durability of the Mazda oem glass windows as car model is relatively new. So far have not had any other issues with the other windows of the car. The tempered glass, however, did shatter as correctly designed, no injuries.
