Mazda CX9 owners have reported 9 problems related to brake disc pads (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I was taking my daughter to high school in the morning with my son in the car as well. In the parking lot of the high school, I applied the brakes but the brakes did not work. My foot was all the way to the floor when they finally caught but I was out in the line of traffic and luckily no one hit me and injured my son or myself. After replacing the rotors and brake pads that did not fix the situation, I have since learned that the brake booster has been an ongoing issue with Mazda cx-9 that was even investigated by the NHTSA without having a recall. How does something so critical in the safety of lives does not generate a recall that the NHTSA has seen repeated complaints of the same issue without advising or caring about the safety of the consumers and other drivers. It is an ongoing issue that Mazda has not addressed or corrected.

Both rear brakes locked up on separate occasion while driving on the freeway at about 70 mph. Each time the brake engaged themselves and locked onto the disk/rotor. This caused the pads to burn up and produce a larger quantity of smoke. On one occasion the rotor became red hot, flame was visible, lots of smoke was being produced, and it warped rotor. Every time it occurred I stopped the vehicle and turned it off. After the restart of the vehicle the brakes were not locked but the vehicle would shake as now the rotors were warped an the pads were destroyed. I took my vehicle to the Mazda dealership and they informed me that I needed new pads, I did but it was due to the rear brakes locking up on their own. I got the pads replaced and 6 months later it happened again. This time I recorded a video on my phone and showed the dealer ship what I experienced again. This time they informed that I needed, new brake pads(again), rotors, and piston but they did not address what is causing the rear brakes only to lock up on their own creating excessive wear and damage to the brake components. Something is and continues to engage my rear brakes. It last occurred on 10-04-19 and it has only been 3 days since the Mazda dealer replaced the damaged parts and under hard braking the vehicle continues to shake which are early signs of what happened before, so its only a matter of time before it occurs again.

As noted by many on this site, I experienced a scary brake booster failure. Complete loss of powered brakes which put my whole family in danger. This is a family car and I have small children so this is appalling that Mazda would not issue a recall for this problem. I see that there was a TSB and associated extended warranty period for this issue but as many have noted on this site, the true failure tends to occur after the 7 year warranty period. I actually started noticing some issues with the braking on this vehicle years ago, but assumed that it just needed new brake pads and rotors as the car was getting older. If I had received some type of communication from Mazda or NHTSA, then I would have known the true issue during the extended warranty. I only have 77,000 miles on this car, but since it is older than 7 years. . . Mazda refuses to address the problem or take accountability for this quality defect. I paid for the repair myself. Mazda has lost a loyal customer. Shame on them for putting drivers and their families knowingly at risk and not doing the right thing.

Vehicle pulsates while braking while driving fast or at slower speeds. The steering wheel does not shake. The brake pedal does not pulsate. The vehicle brakes were changed several times with new rotors and pads on all four tires. I noticed there was a recall on lower control arms #15v-451. It only was inspected at the time of recall but never changed. Could it be possible that they are now worn and can be changed per the recall.
Brakes were occasionally tight, had to be pushed very hard to get the vehicle to stop. When I pushed the brakes it sounded like air was being pushed out. Changed pads and brake fluid, flushed the air out. Only made it worse. Now the brakes are constantly tight and after learning this is a common issue with this vehicle I'm going to replace the brake booster. Ridiculous that so many are having this issue and Mazda isn't recalling this part!.

I noticed that at very slow speed (backing out, easing forward) the brake pedal was very hard, did not depress, and car was difficult to stop. I did not have much of a problem at regular (60 mph) speed. Only once was there a loud hissing on the drivers side when the pedal was depressed. The dealer told me brakes were fine but the car did not drive fine. I took it to my mechanic who told me I needed front brake pads. Upon changing brake pads, I was told the brake booster was bad and causing the pads to wear abnormally fast and that the problem was actually worse with the new pads. Definitely a problem as I was only at 31,000mi. I didn't not return to the dealer and had the mechanic do the repair right then. What I thought was minor maintenance turned into a $500 repair. I found out later that there is an extended warranty of 7yr/90,000mi on the brake booster if diagnosed and fixed by a dealer.
The brakes on the vehicle have become unpredictable. I initially took the car to my local shop only to be turned around being told that there was not enough wear on the pads to warrant replacement and that everything looked fine. However, being the owner of the car, I can confirm a severe and sudden regression in the breaking behavior. While the car still slows down when the breaks are applied, the pedal has become very hard and the ability to stop suddenly is severely comprised (even at a slow speed). I have to plan my braking point much further away from my anticipated stopping point which makes driving much trickier. I would not trust the vehicle to save me from a crash were I to require emergency braking.

I just stated noticing issues with my brakes, I started hearing a low hissing noise and noticed that I was having a hard time coming to a complete stop. I need to pump the brakes several times to slow down and then once stopped the brakes go all the way to the floor. I took my Cx9 in today July 8, 2013 to have the brakes checked and the oil changed. I was told the breaks and pads are fine but there is something wrong with the brakes. They tried flushing the lines and that did not help. They told me they could not look at the car further until Wednesday July 10th. I asked if the car was safe to drive they said it was and to go slowly upon reaching a light and make sure to pump the breaks so I can stop in time and not go through the intersection. This is very alarming to me since an accident can occur this is my only vehicle and I need to get back and forth to work. They told me they needed to call the Mazda help line to find out what is wrong with the breaks. After researching on line today Mazda Cx9 brake issues am very interested to see what they say and if it is the same problem that has been reported since 2008 with this model. I am very upset since I take very good care of my car and always take it to the Mazda dealer for service. My vehicle is at the 37,000 mark which appears to be the point when this has been a problem for other vehicles. I hope that Mazda will cover the costs to fix the car and that I don't get into an accident between now and Wednesday.
I purchased this car from a dealer this year with $48,000 miles. It was in tip top shape. Recently the brakes are not working. It is not the brake pads, but a hissing sound in the line and no brakes. The cost to fix is around $1500 and I don't have a credit card or the money to fix at this time. In researching I am not alone with this problem. There are going to be some bad wrecks and problems if this is not addressed ASAP. I pray everytime I have to go out and stop really far behind pumping and trying to make them work.
