Sirt: I purchased my 2011 Mazda cx 9 from my close friend greg chavez on Dec. 05 of 2014! mr chavez had not been issued a special services program about the brake booster! well I never received this info either? in fact I had two recall that were taken care of by the local Mazda dealer here in thousand oaks calif. This known brake booster detonation has been known by Mazda. Iot is a very dangerous condition and is not to safe to drive the car at all- I will not drive the car and seethe original matter should have been let it be known to myself and feel the matter should be addressed ASAP by Mazda -thank you edwin vladish- 805-236-4099 adding backing -very hard brake - when driving it had to really stand hard on the brake to stop car b! all indications point to a brake booster failure ! to summarize io was never notified by Mazda about the special service program for the repair of this extremely unsafe brake p[roblem!.

The contact owns a 2012 Mazda cx-9. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 20 mph, the brakes failed to operate. The contact mentioned that the brakes gradually slowed down the vehicle and stop independently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where they informed the contact that there was an unknown recall on the vehicle. The contact contacted riley Mazda (75 myrtle Ave, stamford, CT 06902, (203) 978-5780) and was informed that the VIN was not under recall. The contact was informed of an extended warranty coverage however, the mileage had been exceeded. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 129,000.

The vehicle suddenly lost braking power, and the brake pedal would sometimes feel "spongy" and sometimes feel rock-hard, with varying results for braking power. I went to a mechanic who said the brake booster failed, and we found this was a known problem with the Mazda cx-9, however NHTSA's investigation was resolved when Mazda covered this problem for one year from the date is closing the NHTSA investigation. This apparently is still a problem, though. I called Mazda's customer service, and they refused to acknowledge this problem existed and would only give the scripted "there are no open recalls on your vehicle".

While pulling into my garage at low speed, my power brakes failed. I had to practically stand on the break pedal to get the vehicle to stop, barely stopping before hitting the fridge in my garage. The vehicle was towed for service and the problem diagnosed as the failure of the brake vacuum booster.
I was driving home with the family after viewing some house. Every time I would step on the brake pedal I would hear a hissing from the brake. Been happening for about a month now but, with the pandemic going on I just don't have time to diagnose the problem. When I press on the brake it would stop like normal with air hissing. The next day the brake pedal would feel very hard to press down. Like as if you been pumping your brake when the car off and when you turn your car on the pressure would be released. Not today, it stayed hard and hard to stop. I had to press the brake very hard as if pressing the brake pedal all the way down to the floor to make the car stop. Just stopping at a red light, stop sign, off the highway, and traffic was a challenge. I'll eventually stop but in the middle of a intersection or in the back of a car. If I had to brake because someone turned in front of me, I would of just hit them full speed because my brake booster failure to produce enough pressure to engage my brakes to stop. The day the brake booster happen to failure completely is when we had a family trip down to the wisconsin dells over the July 4th weekend. Since brake booster wasn't a recall but an extended warranty and ended March 2015 or 90,000 miles. Mazada would charge me full price to get it fixed. I would not fell safe driving it to the dealer and mazada doesnt cover towing unless its within 3 years. So they'll tow anything in the 2017 and newer. 2012 mazada cx-9 with 112,500. Owned it for exactly 3 to dated.
Brakes really hard to press. Wife thought car wasn't going to stop and she was going to rear end car in front of her. Sometimes brake pedal would feel spongy. Over last month there was an intermittent strange noise sometimes when car was started. Mazda dealership identified the problem to be a defective brake booster. I found that NHTSA opened investigation on cx-9 brake issues previously and Mazda identified problem to be brake booster. Mazda extended the warranty to 7 years or 90,000 miles and NHTSA closed investigation. Our brake booster failed at 9 years with 79,388 miles on the car. From what I have read the life expectancy of a brake booster is the life of the car. Mazda never informed us about this possible problem. Our family could have been seriously injured or killed due to this defect. Why did the NHTSA accept an extended warranty as a solution?.
As the car was being driven the breaks became hard and unless pressed very hard it keeps going. It doesn't go down at all. Assessment shows brake booster failure. It is weird other vehicle I had . . . A Toyota never failed. I can't drive it.
Our vehicle has lost braking power and is unsafe to drive any distance now. It is very difficult to get the vehicle to stop and keep it stopped once it has stopped moving without putting it in park. I have been advised this is in relation to Mazda ssp 93. Mazda has advised that is it my responsibility to have this vehicle towed to the nearest dealership, pay for repair labor, and pay for a rental car while repairs are being made. I am in complete disbelief that a known manufacturer's defect related to braking and general safety of everyone on the road was not immediately issued as a recall. We were provided zero notice that there was even potential for brake failure.
Brake booster failed. This is a known issue to Mazda. Mazda said to bring into dealer for assessment and consideration for goodwill warranty replacement. Dealer determined brake booster failed and Mazda then denied goodwill claim. I paid dealer to fix the issue. This is a major safety issue and should have been recalled, not granted an extended warranty.
Hissing sound when brake pedal is pressed. Pedal gets really hard to push then it goes to the floor when attempting to stop the vehicle. In a panic stop it feels that the car will not be able to stop. I am told that the brake booster has failed. The mileage on the vehicle is approximately 138,000 miles.

So disappointed in NHTSA for not requiring Mazda to recall the brake booster failure! NHTSA's investigation into the brake booster failure was closed when Mazda agreed to an extended warranty for this manufacturing safety defect. Had the NHTSA pushed for a recall notice, we would have been alerted to this safety defect and could have had it repaired (it is known to fail around 62,000 miles). We contacted Mazda today about the warranty only to be told our vehicle warranty expired less than 3 months ago, resulting in Mazda's refusal to cover a known safety defect. Mazda's lack of commitment to resolving this safety issue is shocking. Nhtsa's acceptance of Mazda extending its warranty for this known safety issue is disheartening as well. A manufacturing defect is a manufacturing defect; the problem should have been addressed when it failed or, at the very least, recalled and replaced. A time limit should not have been an option for a safety issue (or an out for Mazda). Perhaps it is time for NHTSA to reopen its investigation to protect the consumers against a known safety defect. Mazda certainly doesn't back it's product when it comes to safety issues!.
Tl the contact owns a 2008 Mazda cx-9. While exiting the highway and depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle failed to stop. The contact swerved to the right and struck a curb, which slowed the vehicle down. The contact quickly shifted into park. In addition, each time the brake pedal was depressed, the sound of blowing air was heard from the driver's side of the dashboard. There was no warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The contact called ray skillman Mazda west (located at 5309 w pike plaza rd, indianapolis, in 46254, (317) 293-8060) and was informed to schedule an appointment. While driving out of the driveway and depressing the brake pedal, the brake failure recurred. The vehicle was towed to ray skillman Mazda west where it was diagnosed that the brake booster needed to be replaced. The extended warranty had expired; therefore, the contact would have to pay for the repairs. The vehicle was not repaired due to the diagnostic and repair fees. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 136,493.

Brake booster failure.
Tl the contact owns a 2011 Mazda cx-9. The contact stated that there was an intermittent failure with the brake system failing to function properly as the contact had to press the brake pedal, release the brake pedal and apply force to stop the vehicle. The failure happened more than once to the point of it being a risk that may result in a crash as the vehicle had stalled as well. The vehicle was unsafe to drive, parked at the owner's residence and may need to be towed for repairs. The dealer young Mazda (191 commerce park dr, easton, PA 18045, (610) 991-9100) was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA action number: pe14005 (service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer was notified of the failure to determine if they had a technical guideline to repair the vehicle. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was not available.
Vacuum power brake booster failure, my brakes did not work and my car stalled. There is a warranty extension for this problem - not a recall - I never knew anything about it. A consumer must be notified of a recall but not a warranty extension but this is a very dangerous problem. I fear for the safety of others who may not know about the problem. If you don't know about it you do not ask to have it checked and when it fails you are in danger. I appreciate the warranty extension but I honestly think that I should have been notified. No one was injured and there was no property damage - I believe there should be some reconsideration regarding the decision not to issue a recall on this problem.
Brake booster failed at 90k miles. Pedal is extremely hard to push and has little brake force. Along with a loud hissing noise from brakes. Mazda said it was part their special service warranty and would charge full rate to fix.
Tl- the contact owns a 2012 Mazda motor. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, while trying depress the brake pedal it fail to operate. The contact also mentioned that the vehicle coasted until it came to a complete stop. The vehicle was examined by a independent mechanic where the customer was informed that the power brake booster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 110,000. Dr.
Tl the contact owns a 2011 Mazda cx-9. While driving at an unknown speed, the brakes failed to respond when the brake pedal was depressed. There were no warning indicators illuminated during the failure. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the brake booster failed. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 120,000.
Brake booster failure, causing brakes to not engage without pumping the brake pedal. No check engine or maintenance lights were triggered due to the failure. Only indication was engine revving while idle for no apparent reason and inability to bring the vehicle to a stop.
Airbag safety recall, transmission switch failure, throttle body failure, brake failure.
The contact owns a 2008 Mazda cx-9. While driving various speeds, the brake pedal became difficult to depress without warning. The contact stated that the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard before stopping the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the electronic brake booster failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the warranty had expired. The local dealer was not contacted. No further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 126,000.
Brake booster failure brake pedal hissing and started to stiffen I was driving then stopped at a traffic light noticed that the brakes were hissing and was really hard to push on to a complete stop.
When braking the brakes are either hard and do not work or brakes are spongy, will slow vehicle, but will not give you confidence that they will stop the vehicle like they should. When braking at times you can hear a hissing, maybe all the time, but when things are happening you aren't listening for a hissing sound. Also, when the vehicle is stationary and in park if you really put you foot to the floor a beeping almost like an alarm sound is made. This brake booster failure should be a major concern. 8-13-2017 I was traveling about 65 mph in lite traffic on a downgrade and slight corner when a vehicle in front of me lost a tire and I needed to brake quickly and my brake pedal wouldn't move, it was hard as a rock, never slowed the vehicle at all. Thank goodness I had plenty of room to maneuver, otherwise who knows what the result of that accident may have been. Another time was 8-30-2017 I was driving my vehicle, approx 20 mph, and was approaching the intersection of our subdivision and the hwy where the traffic travels at 55 mph, I went to brake and the pedal went to the floor. . . . Again no brakes. My vehicle rolled to a complete stop, but not before I crossed into the second lane of cross traffic. Again thank goodness it was around 6:30 am and traffic was fairly lite. Mind you this is only two of the more extreme times. I have purchased a new brake booster and it will be installed this weekend. I did try to contact Mazda, but after sitting on hold, 1-800-222-5500, for over 18 minutes the phone finally rings. . . . . Until it disconnects.
Upon stopping, brake pedal became hard to depress and car would not brake effectively. Braking action became degraded, time frame was one day. It was intermittent, but would not stop effectively creating a hazard. Unable to judge stopping distance due to brake degradation. Took to mechanic who replaced brake booster, said most likely a vacuum issue. Said this is a recall item on same part for Ford escape 2010 and Lincoln mkz. Ford owns most of Mazda and the cx-9 uses Ford made parts. Upon research, Mazda and NHTSA both know of the issue, but have not issued a recall notice. Ford has warrantied the same part for 150,000 miles, Mazda has not issued recall for same part with same problem and risk. Upon research of online boards regarding the same problem, there have been several repairs by Mazda owners for the same problem. This failure on my car is at 98,000. With the takata airbag recall, and not being able to get replaced and the brake booster problem, presents significant hazard to Mazda cx-9 owners for risk of rear end collisions due to brake booster failure and takata airbag deployment potentially causing serious harm or death to the driver and passenger. I am wanting NHTSA to move forward past the monitoring phase and ask for a recall or warranty of the vacuum booster failure at higher mileage as Ford has already done the same for their vehicles for the same part.
The contact owns a 2011 Mazda cx-9. While driving approximately 30 to 40 mph, the contact engaged the brake pedal and attempted make a left turn, but the brakes failed to engage. The contact was able to steer the vehicle onto a dirt road to bring the vehicle to a stop. The vehicle was towed to the Hyundai Mazda dealer (14821 pandelli road victorville, CA 92392 phone 760-241-3801) where it was diagnosed that the brake booster failed. The manufacturer stated that the brake booster failure was not warranted for 90,000 miles. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 90,000.
Without warning the brakes became spongy and difficult to depress the pedal. Stopping distance significantly increased and a hissing noise while brakes pedal depressed. Took it in for evaluation and diagnosed with brake booster failure.
Brakes failed. Attempts to stop only slowed vehicle down unless extreme pressure applied. Pedal stopped halfway. Occasionally abs activated due to excessive force required to depress brake pedal. Repair with replaced brake booster. Immediately failed again by making noise on depression though vehicular is stopping. Dealer ordering another booster and will need to return for repair again when it comes in.
The contact owns a 2009 Mazda cx-9. While approaching a stop light in order to make a right turn, the brakes failed to stop the vehicle when the pedal was depressed. The contact had to continue to drive into a nearby parking lot until the vehicle came to a stop. The contact turned off the vehicle and had it towed to a certified mechanic. The mechanic diagnosed that the power brake booster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
Tried to stop the vehicle while driving and the brake pedal made a hissing sound as if air was escaping. The vehicle also kept moving even though the brake pedal was fully pressed to the floorboard. Took the vehicle in to the Mazda dealership the next day and it was confirmed that the brake booster had failed internally.

Brake pedal became very difficult to depress, with hissing sound. Had to fully depress pedal to be able to stop from moderate speeds of 20-30mph. Research indicates the cx-9 has experienced brake booster failure with this symptom in previous model years.
The brakes on our 2010 cx-9 are hissing upon brake engagement and have a hard feel to them for the first half or so. The brakes are slow to engage during this time. After the half way mark the brakes engage quickly and forcefully. It is consistent with the other complaints for the brake booster failure. I am having it looked at this week at a Mazda dealership.
Reference ssp93 - brake booster diaphragm leakage on 2010-2012 Mazda cx-9 vehicles. On, or about August 5, 2016 power brakes failed, causing a need to apply heavier than normal pedal pressure to stop vehicle, resulting in very near rear-end collision with vehicle at stop sign. This defect is known by the manufacturer and was investigated by NHTSA in 2014. Investigation was closed with no recall action recommended. There should indeed be a recall mandated for this defect since it can result in serious collisions due to failure to safely stop vehicle.
At 44,000 miles, brakes feel hard and vehicle brakes slower than it should was nearly in an accident due to this. It took a much longer distance to stop. Emergency repair at local shop indicated brake booster failed. Really dangerous situation. Mazda should recall.
Brake booster failed, dealership indicated it was under extended warranty. Brought in for repairs at no cost, Mazda failed to acknowledge and do repair. Cost me 556. 21 for a very serious safety issue that is under investigation. Would like to get reimbursed. Loss of brakes, unsafe to drive. Hissing sound from brakes when pressed.
With no warning at all the power brakes stopped working. To stop the car you have to almost stand on the brakes. When you push on the brake pedal you also hear a very faint hissing noise. This is very dangerous as there is no warning of the brake failure. Unless you are a very strong person there is no way to stop the car in an emergency.
