Mazda CX9 owners have reported 60 problems related to brakes failed (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My brake booster has failed and caused a near crash. The hissing sound when pressing the break occurs and the brakes do not come to a complete stop. I had the vehicle inspected and the same brake booster failure that has been reported has been previously reported. I was never notified from Mazda of the warranty extension and now that my mileage is at 101,000 miles I've just missed the "warranty extension" and they refuse to make the repair. Why is this just an investigation and not a complete recall? Mazda clearly knows there's a problem and this can cause serious accidents with injury. My wife, who is the primary driver, is pregnant and have 3 small children that use this vehicle.

My brakes are failing. I first noticed the brakes were spongy and there was a hissing sound in the cabin. Then the brakes became very hard. I was very afraid I was going to hit vehicles in front of me. Also, eventually the car would die when the brakes were applied. The Mazda dealership told me it is the brake power booster. This is very common. Please, please recall these vehicles. I bought this vehicle used and it would have been nice to know about this dangerous problem.

Brake pedal got hard vehicle would not stop no warning lights almost rear ende vehicle brake failure.
My brake feels like it has air under it and is hard to press down on. It also makes a hissing sound. When stopped at a traffic light, with my foot on the brake, it feels like my car is trying to move. I am scared my brake will fail or not work when I push on it. I noticed this about a week and a half ago. I thought it was nothing at first but it is still doing this and more frequently. I am concerned that this will cause an accident. I am worried something will happen to my children or me if my brakes fail because of this.
I was driving home from work today. When I approached a traffic light, I depressed the brake pedal and had to press it very hard for the car to stop. Good thing there was nobody in front of me because I would have hit them. As I started to go again and proceed to another light, as I pushed the brake pedal, I heard a 'hissing' sound coming from the pedal. It almost sounded like air coming out of a tire. This was alarming to me because I felt as if my brakes were giving out. I had to press very hard on the brake and as it braked, it was so sudden it shoved me forward in the seat. I took it right over to our service shop in town, and after he took the car for a test drive, he drove it right back and proceeded to tell me that it sounds like the brake booster was going. He advised me not to drive the car and to call aaa and have it towed to the dealer. I managed to get it back home, very slowly, and into the garage. This is very frightening to me because my daughter also drives this car on occasion and what if the brakes failed while she was driving?! in reading all the posts with customers having this same issue with the brakes, I think Mazda needs to recall this part before they have a bigger lawsuit on their hands! I will be calling the dealership first thing tomorrow morning.
I had 3 children in car seats, myself and my oldest son in our Cx9. I crested a hill and started down the other side and I applied the brakes to slow down and they were hard and would not allow me to stop. I almost hit the truck in front of me. He was thankfully watching his mirror and ran a red light to get out of the way so I didn't hit him. After standing on the brakes for what seemed like a life time they finally engaged in the middle of the intersection and hissed with a loud squealing noise. I removed myself from the intersection and at 5 miles per hour went to the nearest mechanic. I was told to call Mazda because the power assist braking system had failed. I called Mazda and they told me not drive it as it was unsafe. They would have it towed to the nearest dealership and would take care of it. The nearest dealership is dolan Mazda kia in reno nevada. I was informed by steve to look at it in the shop I was looking at $125. And that it was no longer under warranty because my Cx9 has over a 100k mls. And the warranty ran out at 90k. The brakes failed unexpectedly with no warning. I was never notified about this safety issue from Mazda nor the dealership I purchased it from. I see that the NHTSA has closed it's investigation with no recall or that Mazda customers were informed. My family could have been seriously injured or even killed.

My vehicle's braking system had been functioning normally with the exception of the sound of a "hissing" when applying the brake when stopped at a red light. I stopped to get gas on may 3rd, 2015 and upon restarting the vehicle, the power assist on my brakes was gone. Upon doing some research, I discovered that Mazda had issued a special service recall that was VIN specific on this exact issue; however, my VIN # was not included therefore I was never notified. . This is the second happened to my Mazda Cx9, 2011. The brake started to have hissing sounds while stepping on brake. The brake pedal is harder than usual to depress. The brake functions has been reduced around 30~50% less than normal. This has put dreiving safety in jeopardized. This is the second time my Cx9's brake booster failure. The first time is in year 2012. I worked with Mazda to have brake booster replaced. However, dealer seemed not realized there is a warranty extended program from Mazda --- Mazda special service program -93 (ssp93). This is official recorded in NHTSA action number pe14005. Dealer tried contacting Mazda for this program. But Mazda kept not responding, it has been two weeks but still not message back from them. I paid the repairmen of the defective brake booster (parts & labor) from my own packet at this point. Despite the defective parts for jeopardizing driving safety, my complaints to Mazda is also for their non-responsive to customer's warranty program which they have made.
The brake booster failed. All of a sudden the brake felt hard and the car wouldn't brake - had to press very hard to barely avoid hitting another car in front. On the way to the dealer, it was scary and could have easily got into an accident. I am lucky it didn't happen on a highway. The dealer replaced the brake booster - it was under extended warranty but not recalled. Though the dealer was quick to fix the problem, I believe this is a really dangerous and lives can be lost! I expected a defective braking system should have initiated a recall!!!.
Whiles driving and approaching a stop light or traffic light, the brakes depress and the car doesn¿t stop, the brakes have to be pumped but then then the brakes are hard/stiff so much so that you have to push really hard for the car to stop. Once this happens, it recurs all the time. The engine check light came on a day later, not sure if it related, I assume so for now. My car has less than 10,000 miles on it. I notice there is recall notice for this condition by Mazda but this is an extremely dangerous situation, which should be fixed at once. It seems to be a least effort type of recall notice for an extremely dangerous situation. To summarize, whiles driving your brakes fail and the car does not stop. When you pump the brakes, they are stiff / hard and you have to push down really hard for the car to stop.
My brakes basically failed! when I was driving, I tried to apply my brakes and I could tell right away something was wrong. The car had a lot of trouble stopping and I was afraid it wouldn't stop. The brakes felt very hard and I had to apply a lot of pressure to them to get the car to stop. I had to almost stand on the brakes to get them to work. When I called my mechanic he said it sounded like the brake booster failed which apparently is very common in this make and model of car. I almost hit a car when this happened and it was very dangerous and quite scary! it was also very expensive to fix, but would have been a lot worse if I had hit something.
Without warning, the brakes failed. They seemed locked to the floor, impossible to press. No signal indicators no warning. Just suddenly no brakes. Very critical problem and accidents involving loss of life is probable.
The contact owns a 2010 Mazda cx-9. The contact stated that the brakes failed intermittently. The contact mentioned that he had to apply force in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 41,000.
Noticed a hissing sound on my 2013 Mazda cx-9 upon braking -only because radio was off. Brakes began requiring extra force in order to stop. Was at a stop light and realized vehicle slightly roll forward. Periodically brakes would become tight and feel like car had turned off especially upon parking and backing up. Explained symptoms to service tech at Mazda and scheduled to have vehicle looked at. Upon driving to dealership (during morning traffic) I was cut off by another vehicle and had to slam on brakes which in it's most important moment failed!! I ended up swerving into oncoming traffic and was completely blessed not to have hit or have been hit by another vehicle. Ironically this all happened right outside the doorsteps of the dealership. I was completely shaken up and very emotional. How do brakes on a brand new car fail to work??? service tech said it was the brake booster that failed and stated "I was a very lucky girl". My car since has been fixed, however, I am fearful to drive it again. It would be one thing if it had been an isolated incident, I understand nothing in this world is perfect, however, this is not an isolated but yet common problem. I was told when the brake booster gets hot or overheats it causes a leak which in turn creates the brake failure. Really?? I live in florida it's always hot! so basically even though the brake booster has been "fixed" there's a chance for it to happen again. I'm sorry but I'm not willing to take a chance on my life again! not sure why there hasn't been a recall yet. Perhaps someone has to be seriously injured or worse. Please, please be cautious if any of the symptoms mentioned arise and have the car towed and not driven to your dealership or mechanic.

Brakes failed to engage 3 times this morning, the first time failed to stop the SUV so had to swerve to the center median and slightly hit the metal barrier. Then going back home making a turn, brakes failed again to engage. Seems this happened when making turns. Brought to the Mazda dealer, told them about ongoing investigation by NHTSA about Mazda Cx9 2010-2011 brake problems. They did a thorough check but could not duplicate the problem so nothing was fixed. It might be the brake booster. I'm afraid this might happen again, they said there was no recall regarding brakes for 2011 Mazda Cx9. Hope that NHTSA forces Mazda to make a recall. Mazda has to fix this dangerous problem.
At approximately 25,300 miles, my 2012 Cx9 touring started stalling at traffic lights. It was sporadic, but appeared to happen when I used more force when braking. Within days I noticed a very distinct hissing sound while braking, much like air was leaking from my tires. At this point, braking became increasingly more difficult, and the distance required to stop my car was much greater. I almost had a collision because I did not realize I needed to begin braking sooner in order to stop my car and I veered into a grassy median to avoid the accident. In order to stop the car I had to apply both feet to my brake pedal and it was nearly on the floor. The service advisor said this was a safety issue and found the "brake booster failing internally", and it was replaced. The stalling was due to "vacuum leak through booster". There was no indication that my brakes had a problem; no dashboard mainteance lights were present. This is a serious safety issue. I just read about a current brake booster failure investigation with 2010 and 2011 model years, but 2012 needs to be included in this investigation as well.
Driving in snowy conditions; brakes failed twice when I applied light pressure. First time, the brakes shuddered, but the car finally stopped after I applied hard pressure; the second time it happened, the brakes shuddered, and nothing happened when I first applied harder pressure. Eventually the car skidded, but it was too late.
Total brake failure.
Our 2011 cx 9 brakes are failing. The power brake booster will at times not work making the brakes very hard to depress and without the ability to quickly and safely stop the car.
The contact owns a 2008 Mazda Cx9. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the brakes failed to stop the vehicle. The contact was able to safely pull over. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where it was stated that the brake booster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.

Brakes failed due to faulty brake booster. Two others at the dealership had the same problem. Mazda could not immediately fix the problem because they are out of brake boosters and are not sure when any will be available. Indications are that this is a wide spread issue and should be investigated.
Cpsc: i1360001a. Mazda Cx9 2010. Consumer stated after 36,400 miles on car, a catastrophic brake failure occurred on a two year old impeccably maintained vehicle.
Catastrophic brake failure. Brakes would not stop vehicle. Vehicle towed for repair.
Power brake booster failure.
I filed a complaint through Mazda in 2012 and it didn't go anywhere. I saw an article in USA today, regarding my vehicle stating that an investigation was started due to 7 reported incidents on brake failures which resembled my experience. I am now sharing my story as it could have resulted in serious injury. I was approaching an intersection and applied the break but the car did not slow down, I pushed the brake all the way to the floor and the wheels squealed but the car did not slow. I let up on the brake and reapplied and that is when the car began to slow down. But, it was too late. I hit the car in front of me and launched it into the middle of the intersection. Thankfully, the light had just changed and the cross traffic was at a stop. When the police arrived, they noticed one skid mark on the driver side only which was around 200 yards. About 4 feet prior to impact, there were two skid marks, one on each side of the vehicle. They said that they had never seen anything like it and that I should take it to an independant person to get the brakes checked out. I have photos of this and sent all of the documentation sent to the insurance company and to Mazda. I felt neither believed me and was very diappointed in Mazda's response. Eventially, I gave up. We actually were going to sell the vehicle as I didn't feel comfortable driving it. However, after all of the responses I was getting about what I described as impossible with anti lock breaks or that it was a result of "panic breaking", I second guessed myself and we still have the vehicle. On a separate occassion 2-4 weeks prior to the accident on may 15, my husband was driving very slowly in a residential area and when he applied the break, the car initially did not stop until reapplying. He rolled part way into the intersection. I was with him when this occurred.
