The contact owns a 2018 Mazda cx-9. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the engine started overheating within approximately 15 minutes of driving. The contact had to pull over and wait for a while to let the engine cool down before continuing to drive. The contact stated that there was a message that the engine was overheating and to stop driving the vehicle displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that coolant was leaking into the cylinders due to a fracture in the cylinder head. The contact was unsure of the cylinders with the failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact found a technical service bulletin regarding the cylinder head failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the VIN was not covered under the TSB and that the TSB had expired in 2023. The failure mileage was 76,000.
I purchased a 2018 Mazda Cx9 from a local used car dealer several weeks ago. Check engine light came on after a few weeks for cylinder 3 misfire and there was a steep decline of the vehicle performance (hard start, rough idle, lower mpg, sluggish driving). Took it to berge Mazda who charged me for diagnostics/spark plugs, and ignition coil. They informed me the next steps were a compression tests, fuel injectors and if that didn’t fix the problem then they wanted to strip down the engine to evaluate the cylinder head. At this point I decided to take it to my local mechanic who I trust, he diagnosed a cracked cylinder head. Now I’m stuck with a car I just bought that’s unsafe to drive needing a 6-8k repair. Upon further research there is a widespread problem with Mazda’s manufacturing of there cylinder heads on certain models (including the 2018 Mazda Cx9). This is confirmed by TSB’s from Mazda along with a class action lawsuit recently filed. Upon more research on my vehicles history, I gathered that my vehicle was traded into horne Mazda and then a couple days later auctioned to the used car dealer I bought it from. The fact that Mazda is selling off their own defective vehicles that are unsafe at auctions is absolutely disgusting and something needs to be done about it.
My Mazda 2017 cx 9 apparently had a coolant leak. When we had our oil changed, we were told it looked like it was leaking from behind the turbo booster. As I was driving it yesterday, the car slowed to an almost complete stop on the interstate and a warning sign on the screen showed that it was overheating to a dangerous level. I immediately pulled over and allowed the car to cool down. I checked the coolant level and it was not very low at all, although I did add some coolant at that time. It continued to overheat and even blew tons of smoke out through the exhaust, so I had aaa tow to my home. After researching this, I have found that there was a bulletin posted in 2021 from Mazda about this very thing happening. My husband thinks that we may have a cracked block or a blown head gasket due to this overheating. This obviously could have caused me to have a wreck on the interstate by my car overheating and shutting down so quickly. We are scheduling to have it towed to our local Mazda dealer to let him do the $99 diagnostic. Based on what he finds, which we think will be confirming what we think it is, we will have to have a new engine put in my car due to a defect in manufacturing from Mazda. Even though my car has 130,000 miles on it and is technically “out of warranty“, we feel this is simply unacceptable and that Mazda should help us with this most definitely. I have so enjoyed my Mazda, and I feel that this is not something of my doing, but rather a defect on Mazda part and it should be addressed.

July 10, 2024, antifreeze leaking from my engine leaking on garage floor. Yes, my safety was put at risk. July 12, 2024, local mechanic informs me that I have a cracked cylinder head coming from the back of the engine. July 15, 2024, vehicle will be towed to local Mazda dealership to have vehicle diagnosed. No warning lights, messages or any other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. Happened July 10, 2024, at 3:50pm.

Our 2016 Mazda cx 9 began leaking coolant and we took it to a shop who diagnosed it as coming from the cylinder head, requiring a very expensive repair or new engine. Luckily our engine did not sieze up while driving, but it easily could have with our baby and toddler in the car. Upon searching the internet I found countless reports from other cx 9 owners who experienced the very same issue at similar mileage ~50k-70k. There is a technical service bulletin for this issue, but they have not issued a recall. This very expensive repair is going to set us back significantly and is a financial burden we were not expecting from our well cared for vehicle. It seems Mazda knows about the issue and is unwilling to address it.
Mine Mazda 2018 Cx9 had coolant leakage at 55k miles. Issue is with faulty cylinder head acknowledged by Mazda in below mentioned TSB. I open up a case with Mazda (file number xxx). Dealer quoted 7500$ expense and Mazda is providing assistance of 3101$. I have always serviced at Mazda authorized dealership and this issue was never reported. I have a coolant leak that I have not been able to locate. Despite replacing the radiator, the leak persists. When I contacted the dealer to inquire about estimates for changing the water pump and timing chain, they advised that it would be more cost-effective to replace the entire engine, which would require removing the existing engine at a starting cost of $5,000, with a new engine costing approximately $6,000. They suggested that if I'm already experiencing issues, it might be better to either replace the engine or consider selling the vehicle and purchasing a new one. This response implies that the dealer might be aware of a larger underlying issue and prefers not to address it directly. Experiencing a coolant leak while on the freeway can lead to serious consequences. It can cause the engine to overheat, potentially resulting in significant engine damage and a complete breakdown. This not only poses a safety risk to the driver and passengers but also to other motorists due to the possibility of losing control of the vehicle.

I noticed my 2017 cx-9 touring was leaking coolant. It wasn't much but then checked the reservoir which is nearly empty. The car was overheating. I had it checked out by the dealer and initially I was told that it was bad radiator cap. This was fixed and resolved the initial overheating problems. The overheating issues resurfaced and took it a certified mechanic which indicated it was leaking from the engine block. The quote for repair was over $6000 see: service bulletin: 01-002/23.

This vehicle has been diagnosed as having the cylinder head crack issue referenced in Mazda TSB 01-013/21. The car has just over 70,000 miles on it, so I understand it is out of warranty, yet this issue only came up due to a known design flaw by Mazda. I have been told that I will be without the car for up to 9 weeks due to repair backlogs and the cost will be $5,250 plus tax!! this car has always been maintained at the Mazda dealership since purchase and has never had any other issues until this flaw, acknowledged by became an issue. Immediately, I brought it in, only to be told Mazda would not assist in a good faith repair. This is very sad that Mazda would do this to loyal customers, there should be a recall and this should not fall on customers pockets when we continue to give them business, trusting they would not knowingly put a full engine repair in their customers pockets.
My car started leaking coolant from cylinder, it is known issue for these models, unfortunately Mazda cooperation doesn’t cover the expenses, there is service bulletin about it, so basically so many car got affected or will affect from this problem. It is manufacturer fault, not about customer usage or mistake.
2019 Mazda cx-9 coolant leak. 1st warning light just discovered on June 10, 2024. Dealership quoted not under warranty and will cost $14,000 to replace engine. Mazda has an open TSB technical service bulletin for this and many other Mazda's with the same engine- TSB-coolant leaks at cylinder heads, bulletin # - 01-013/21 issued 10/15/21 (cracked cylinder heads). Need Mazda to stand by their product and remedy impacted owners.
Engine head cracked and is still on car as of now. If engine overheats, engine can seize. The leak has been reproduced, but the head has not been removed for inspection yet. No warning lamps. A large puddle of coolant was noticed under the vehicle. From what I have heard is that the material is too thin and eventually cracks. There is a TSB that covers the issue, but since we've gone beyond the 5 yrs of the powertrain warranty it won't be covered. We are under the mileage limit. We lucky caught the leak before engine damage took place (as far as we know, since the teardown has not been performed. If the replacement head is "reinforcing" that area then a design flaw has been inferred and should be corrected to avoid serious injuries due to a seized motor.

Started with rough idle then got overheating msg on dashboard. After the diagnostics they found cracked cylinder head and quoted $6000 for replacement. Called Mazda USA and they denied our claim. Car is under 5yrs old & around 74k. While working on the car they noticed the turbo needed it to be rebuilt. Another $2k. There is TSB out for this and it’s a known problem, lot of others having/had same issues. Never had a car that needed an engine replacement even before car is paid off.
I took my vehicle into the dealership service center to have maintenance and repairs done. I notified them to a coolant leak. They discovered that the engine has a cracked cylinder head and that the manufacturer is aware of the defect. They stated that they have new updated parts they will use for the repair so this will not happen again. At this time there is no Mazda warranty extension or recall that covers the cost of the repair.
My car has never had any issues but began burning through coolant. After analyzing myself and then bringing to a mechanic, it has a bad cylinder head leak. This is a design flaw in the motors of Mazda cars during the years of the models with a 2. 5 turbo motor. This flaw will now cost me over $6k for a car just out of warranty when I religiously serviced the car at the Mazda dealer I bought it at in 2017. I cannot afford these repairs that were cause by a design flaw on Mazdas side. There is a TSB and a class action lawsuit for this exact issue. Vehicle had a horrible coolant leak at the rear of the engine to find out the engine has a weak cylinder head and is known to break and leak coolant. The vehicle will need a new cylinder head or engine replacement.
There was a coolant leak on my Mazda Cx9 signature with a 2. 5t engine, and when driving the engine temperature started increasing slightly before taking off and turning red. I had to pull off to the side of a busy interstate road very quickly and shut the vehicle down before it overheated any more. Once I got the vehicle to the dealership, they told me it was a cracked cylinder head leaking coolant, and that it was an extremely common problem for the 2. 5t Mazda engines around about 60k miles, and they were actively working on one in the shop where I was for the same problem. Mazda is not currently helping with engine swap or any repairs as a result and is sticking the customer with the bill.

In June of 2022, Mazda issued a TSB for an engine flaw that cause coolant to leak in to the engine and significant overheating occurred. This overheating causes the head to warp. The TSB states that the only repair for this is a newer model engine. This happened to my Mazda Cx9 and quite a few more. There are class action suits currently ongoing. Mazda never made its owners aware of the TSB. The car can shut down on the highway which is dangerous to all.
Due to the flawed engine design which is well documented for these engines, ours started leaking coolant and it was eventually discovered that the head had cracked, and we were forced to have the head replaced. This repair cost us approximately $7600. Our hope is that Mazda will eventually issue a recall.
Cylinder head cracked at 100k. There is TSB knowing that this is a problem. It even stats that it happens during manufacturing there was a defect. Coolant is leaking out the back side of the motor. Causing a over heating conditions stranding my family on the side of the highway.
2018 Cx9 with 74k miles. Took it back to the dealer where I bought it from and have an extended warranty. They are telling me the extended warranty denied the coverage for coolant leak, engine replacement.
A month ago, I experienced a coolant leak at the back of the engine compartment. Upon researching I found that the head was prone to crack at the turbo and produce the leak. I took to my dealer, and they confirmed that it was in fact a cracked head causing the coolant leak. They also confirmed it was a known Mazda problem on the 2016 and newer 2. 5 liter turbo engines. The dealer fixed four in the last month and one on a car their salesman purchased that the head failed at only 2000 miles. I was quoted a cost of $5965 for cylinder head replacement. It seems extremely excessive for a new cylinder head and a more appropriate price for a completely new motor. If this is a known defect on this motor no matter the miles, it seems Mazda should correct this problem in or out of warranty.

Mazda’s service department has not been able to reproduce the problem despite multiple visits. I have provided video evidence, but no conclusive diagnosis or resolution has been achieved. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? Mazda’s authorized technicians have inspected the vehicle several times, but no substantial action has been taken. The vehicle has not been inspected by police or insurance representatives. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? all dashboard lights come on simultaneously without prior warning. The symptoms have been random and intermittent over the past few months. Given the ongoing risk, I request an immediate replacement of my vehicle. Please confirm receipt of this complaint and provide a plan for replacement. Thank you for your prompt attention.

The 2018 Mazda cx-9 has been experiencing significant engine coolant leaks, which are suspected to stem from a manufacturing defect. We noticed anti-freeze leaking from our car a couple of days ago and immediately brought the car to our local mechanic. The mechanic determined that one of the cylinder heads in the engine was cracked and was leaking anti-freeze. He said the car was unsafe to drive. He also told us that a TSB had been issued by Mazda for this problem ( bulletin no 01-002/23, issued 02/10/23). This bulletin states "residual stress generated during production in the cylinder head material may be greater than expected. The external force from the exhaust system when driving over bumps may cause unexpected force to certain areas of the cylinder head". Had we not noticed the leak, the engine could have overheated, causing the engine to seize at any time, any place. Which could have led to a dangerous accident. An accident that could have occurred on a major highway and could have involved other vehicles as well. Our car has just under 80,000 miles, has been well maintained and garage kept. I do not understand why a manufacturing defect such as this - which could lead to engine failure is not a mandatory recall by the manufacturer. We should have been warned that this could happen and Mazda should be responsible for the cost of the repair. It is an engineering design flaw of the vehicle!.
Car started leaking coolant, and running rough / stalling. Eventually overheated due to lack of coolant. Mazda dealer reports cylinder head crack as the root cause of the issue. Pdf) Mazda has decided to decline to offer any financial assistance in the repair. Replacement cost for just the cylinder head (not a complete engine) was quoted by a Mazda dealership to be $6800 - $7200.
Vehicle “surges” at idle. 300-500 rpms at a time. Sometimes the brakes hold and sometimes not. Have nearly been in 3 collisions the last 2 days because of this issue. The ecm codes indicate throttle body or tps issue, both of which have been unfounded. Vehicle has 63,000 miles. Researching this topic online found that many others have had this issue with no associated safety recalls noted. I am hoping to bring light to this so someone doesn’t have to be injured or killed to have this rectified.
