Water Pump Problems of Mazda CX9 - part 1

Mazda CX9 owners have reported 37 problems related to water pump (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Water Pump problem of the 2013 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 04/11/2021

Water pump failed and impacted my engine as well. I just brought my car in as well 10/20/2020 no mention of this issue. Beginning in 2007 and continuing through the 2016 model year, Mazda has incorporated its mzi cyclone engine (the cyclone engine) into hundreds of thousands of vehicles, which include the cx-9 for model years 2007 through 2016 and the Mazda 6 for model years 2009 through 2013. The cyclone engine contains an internal chain-driven water pump, which means the timing chain is connected to the water pump and provides the power the water pump needs to circulate coolant through the engine when the engine is running. The chain-driven water pump is located internal to the cyclone engine, behind numerous engine components, including the timing chain cover. Unbeknownst to purchasers and lessees of these vehicles, the cyclone engine contains a defect in design, manufacturing, materials and/or workmanship that causes the water pump to suddenly and prematurely fail well-before the end of the useful life of the engine, which leads to catastrophic engine failure or a costly replacement due to the water pump's inaccessible placement in the engine. When the water pump prematurely fails without warning, coolant is able to leak from the water pump into the oil pan and/or other engine components, allowing it to mix with the engine's oil. The mixture of engine oil and coolant circulates throughout the engine, leading to destruction of the engine. Despite having knowledge of this defect, Mazda continued selling defective vehicles, failed to disclose the defect to owners and lessees, has not issued a recall, and has not remedied the issue and/or compensated owners and lessees of the defective vehicles.

2 Water Pump problem of the 2015 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 03/19/2021

Engine light came on then my vehicle started over heating and leaking coolant. Vehicle was towed to dealership. After technician diagnosed the problem, I was told it was the internal water pump that caused fluid to mix with the engine oil ruining the engine. I was told I had three options: buy a new engine, buy a used engine or buy a new car. I was told that this was an issue with this year, make and model for several customers. I asked why a recall notice was not given to vehicle owners and was told it was not a safety issue. It would have resulted in an accident if I was on the freeway due to the sudden occurrence of the breakdown. I was driving on a street in traffic. (middle lane)when my car started overheating and shut down. I managed to get it to restart and was barely able to safely pull into a parking lot where I quickly turned it off. I contacted the greenway Mazda dealership to report problem and request tow service . Mazda has apparently been aware of this issue for a while.

3 Water Pump problem of the 2014 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 03/12/2021

I purchased a 2014 Mazda cx nine a year and a half ago. The other day I was driving and I don't know where my fan got really loud so I pulled over and turned up the heat and turned off any ac. All the sun steam started coming out of my engine and the car died. After towing it to the local dealership I was told that I had two options. I could either buy a brand new car or pay $13,000 to have it repaired. Apparently the water pump broke and the engine seized up. I had absolutely no warning. No leaking, no check engine light, nothing I later found several reviews saying this was an issue with this make & model. I still owe over $16,000 on this car and now I have to get a new car.

4 Water Pump problem of the 2011 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 10/29/2020

While driving straight on a highway the water pump bearing failed causing coolant to leak and mix with the engine oil. The car immediately started to make a rattle noise and smoke or steam came from under the hood. The underside of the car was covered with coolant and what appeared to be oil. The car was not drivable and had to be towed to a mechanic. Once at the mechanic the took the engine out to get to the water pump, once everything was put back together it was found that the failure also caused damage to the vvt actuater and alternator. The engine is completely shot.

5 Water Pump problem of the 2015 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 10/06/2020

We purchased a 2015 Mazda Cx9 with 30,000 miles three years ago. At the start of the month, the car suddenly overheated while driving and the engine failed! the mechanic said the water pump failed, the coolant mixed with the engine oil and the engine was done. $$7944. 41 additionally, the overheated engine caused the transmission fluid to burn to a point the the transmission failed. $$4864. This happened at 65,000 miles, 5,000 miles past warranty. After researching the problem, we learned that this is a common problem on Mazdas that use the duratech engine. There are thousands of examples and a class action lawsuit.

6 Water Pump problem of the 2015 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 10/05/2020

7 Water Pump problem of the 2012 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 09/22/2020

My wife was driving down a city street when the car completely shut down and lost all power. Luckily, she was able to stop without causing an accident. We had car towed to an independent mechanic. After inspection we were told the water pump had failed causing coolant to leak into the engine and caused complete engine failure. We were quoted $8k-$10k to replace the engine. The 2012 Mazda cx-9 only had 99k miles, but unfortunately our extended warranty expired a few years ago, so Mazda was of no help. We were left to junk our car for a fraction of what it's value should have been. Apparently this is a known issue and we will be joining the current class action lawsuit against Mazda.

12 Water Pump problem of the 2013 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 02/19/2020

In 2011 we leased a Cx9 and we enjoyed it so much that we decided to purchase a Cx9 in 2013. Just a couple of weeks ago I had an experience that was very frightening. I was driving and realized the heat was not coming on and that was unusual. The check engine light came on and soon after the car stopped running. I am fortunate that I was not on the highway and was able to pull over to the shoulder. I needed to have the car towed and we had it brought to Mazda in danbury, CT. We found out the next day the engine needed to be replaced. Needless to say, we were shocked and then very upset to find out that it would cost 10,000 dollars to repair. We have had our car serviced regularly by colonial Mazda in danbury, CT. Now we have a car that is worth nothing. Now we are put in a position to replace our car and have nothing to turn in to defer the cost. With research we have found that due to the design of the engine many Mazda Cx9 have had the same problem due to the water pump leaking, the transfer case leaking, and antifreeze going into the engine. In our opinion, and apparently to many cases we have read online this should have been a recall. This is something that should be looked in to for the safety of others. Fortunately, I was on a side road, someone else may not be as fortunate. The design of the engine if flawed and is more than likely why Mazda is not having a recall, because it is too expensive to repair.

13 Water Pump problem of the 2011 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 01/04/2020

Water pump leaking in engine mixing with oil.

14 Water Pump problem of the 2015 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 12/27/2019

While driving my 2015 Mazda cx-9 on a very busy interstate, the check engine light appeared on the driver panel. I was traveling with my very young children, ages 4 and 20 months. Approximately 10 miles later, I started hearing a rattling sound under the hood. Shortly thereafter, my car stalled out as I entered my subdivision. My husband had to push the car to our driveway. I called aaa that same day and had the car towed to the dealership that services the vehicle. I was told that the water pump needed to be replaced and was quoted a price to fix the issue. Later, I was told that after further inspection by the dealership that the coolant mixed with fluids and the engine needed to be replaced. I was quoted over $7000 to complete this work. During the course of my research, I have learned that a lot of Mazda customers who have this model vehicle experience this issue quite frequently. I called Mazda customer care and was told that Mazda is not electing to take responsibility for this issue. I was fortunate that I was able to arrive to my subdivision without injuring my children or self, but this is a safety issue that could result in the loss of lives if not corrected immediately.

15 Water Pump problem of the 2015 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 12/14/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2015 Mazda cx-9. While driving 68-70 mph, the vehicle stalled. The contact called heritage Mazda bel air (1800 belair rd, suite c, fallston, MD 21047, (410) 575-1351) and was informed that the repairs were not covered under the warranty. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and provided reference number: 1-2464193497. The failure mileage was 83,183.

16 Water Pump problem of the 2014 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 11/30/2019

I noticed a rough noise when I started the 2014 Mazda cx-9. I chose to ignore it thinking it was because of the cold weather. Got to the highway on the way home to kansas city from columbus, OH. Several miles later when filling gas, I noticed a weird smell like that of a burning rubber or coolant. The car got me home same but I noticed slight smoking from the engine when I got home. Took it to the mechanic and he advised it was the water pump. He didnt have the right tools to replace it so I took it to a Mazda dealership who advied getting a new engine. It's been over three weeks and I'm still waiting or the dealership to find an engine they could replace with. Total cost, $4k - $5k. Extremely frustrated that Mazda wouldnt recall cars with this type of engine/ water pump problem!.

17 Water Pump problem of the 2013 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 10/31/2019

Water pump caused antifreeze to mix with motor oil causing the engine to have to be replace on three occasions within 6 months.

18 Water Pump problem of the 2012 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 10/12/2019

In oct. 2019 my Cx9 stopped while being driven. Found out the water pump (which is inside the engine) had gone out and destroyed my engine. This is a known problem of which Mazda has failed to make their consumers aware. I purchased this care new and all of my services had been handled by Mazda. No-one told me about this problem and I still had to pay just over 4k to get a new engine of the same stupid design put in my car. This is very dangerous problem. How many Mazda drivers have been injured or killed in crashes because the water pump destroyed the engine on a freeway and the car ceasing to move was the cause of an accident that totaled the car and as a result went undetected? the engines need to be recalled.

19 Water Pump problem of the 2010 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 09/13/2019

While driving on a city street, and without any indication that something was wrong, all of a sudden three warning lights came on, engine lost power, accelerator, brakes and steering were unresponsive. I am lucky I could manage to get into a turn lane and stop using the emergency brake. Car was towed to Mazda. Told water pump failed and now coolant is mixed with engine oil, engine likely ruined. The car has 66,000 miles on it. Internet research shows this is a known problem on cx-9s and Mazda did not issue recall. . Read more...

20 Water Pump problem of the 2014 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 08/31/2019

The water pump failed on the vehicle and coolant leaked into the engine oil. The vehicle all of a sudden started shaking, the engine shut off and the vehicle lost power. The engine is now damaged beyond repair. The vehicle has an internal water pump and the owner's manual does not recommend any maintenance to the water pump. This vehicle had all of the recommended maintenance completed at an authorized Mazda dealer, the vehicle was in a parking lot when the engine unexpectedly shut off. While no one was injured when the vehicle lost all power and the engine shut off, it is something that should be looked into.

21 Water Pump problem of the 2014 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 08/23/2019

My wife took our 2014 Mazda cx-9 to liberty Mazda for a check engine light that came on the evening before she already and an appointment for another issue. She asked them to check the light as well. After their findings they told sue the car had a catastrophic water pump engine failure. This water pump is located inside the timing chain cover and leaks coolant in to the engine. At this point we were handed over to a sales rep. Who informed us this was a foolish design with the water pump located in the powertrain behind the timing chain cover. This causes catastrophic engine failure with no warning this is wrong and should not happen. We talked to jason the sales manager who reiterated the same message and said he would put in a good word for me if cooperate called about my complaint. He did and cooperate offered us the eplan on a new car. Approximately $2,000. 00 for a car valued at $12-14,000. 00 this engine was manufactured by Ford for Mazda and the Ford escapes have the same trouble. Please feel free to contact me.

22 Water Pump problem of the 2013 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 06/26/2019

The vehicle was being driven at the time on a busy freeway. When started overheating with no warning. The vehicle then cut off on freeway with traffic behind me at a fast speed. Thankfully I was able to get to shoulder. Towed car to shop and was told that Mazda has faulty water pumps and that my engine was destroyed due to coolant leaking into my oil with turned it to a thick mud. New engine needed. I researched online and there are countless consumers complaining of same issue with Mazda. This is extremely dangerous for your car to just stop when traveling at high speeds or traveling on any highway there needs to be a recall on this faulty water pump inside of the Mazda engine. I believe some one soon will be injured or killed by this issue! thankfully it wasn't my child and I.

23 Water Pump problem of the 2012 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 06/01/2019

Tl- the contact owns a 2012 Mazda cx-9. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds the vehicle had suddenly shut off. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer kennedy Mazda(1411 ridge pike, conshohocken PA) who diagnosed that the engine was damaged due to a faulty water pump. The vehicle was towed back to the home and later repaired by an independent mechanic but the failure had reoccurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 109,000. Jft.

24 Water Pump problem of the 2010 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 05/15/2019

The engine overheated while driving on a highway at high speed and failed without warning. After investigation it was found that water pump malfunctioned forcing coolant into the engine. It is now completely inoperable and the car has only around 80,000 miles on it. This is a major safety issue! the car was serviced and oil changed just a few months before this happened. This is a major design flaw on Mazda's part, which they seem to know about and never issued a recall to get all the cars fixed. Replacing an engine is not something most families have the budget for or even think about when the car is less than 10 years old. There were no warning signs of water pump failure. Mazda needs to warn cx-9 owners with TSB or recall the water pump. The water pump is not buried inside the engine and cannot be visually inspected. Having a vehicle shut off abruptly when traveling at high speeds is a serious risk for both driver, vehicle occupants and surrounding motorists. I hope NHTSA takes this complaint seriously and takes action before a serious or fatal injury occurs.

25 Water Pump problem of the 2010 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 03/26/2019

Vehicle was in motion on a busy street when suddenly the check engine light came on the ac stopped coming out cold, and the car stopped accelerating would only go up to 20 mph, the car started making rattling noises and I drove by to the nearest place to stop and water fell out of the front bottom right of the car. . The water pump messed up.

26 Water Pump problem of the 2012 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 02/22/2019

Vehicle stalled while exiting the highway, engine light on, noise from timing chain area, vehicle overheats, water pump failure pushes antifreeze into the oil compartment causing the engine to get damaged within minutes whiteout a warning. This is obviously a major very expensive safety issue.

27 Water Pump problem of the 2014 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 02/21/2019

The engine sputtered and stopped without warning while driving. It turned out the water pump went out and spilled water internally in the engine. The car has 73,000 miles on it and it appears that this has been happening to other owners of this vehicle routinely, and Mazda has kept this design flaw and safety concern a secret. It is costing over $2,200 to repair, and I believe that Mazda should be held accountable for it. Thank you. 28 Water Pump problem of the 2012 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 01/23/2019

While driving my Mazda car, it suddenly started bucking and check engine light came on. Car was towed to the dealership. Per Mazda mechanic, water pump malfunctioned forcing coolant into the engine. Feel this poses a significant safety issue as there was very little warning posing risk of accident, engine overheating and potential fire. This appears to be a common issue as multiple other posts reported.

29 Water Pump problem of the 2011 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 01/01/2019

Mazda cx-9 2011 has un-detected water pump leaks which cause to engine overheat and eventual engine death. Mazda corporate is unwilling to CO-operate. Car suddenly came to a halt showing engine light on. . And I had to replace the brake booster also because when I was driving the vehicle it turn off on me everywhere and I had to pay out of my pocket and im still paying for this vehicle right now my vehicle is in a garage because is not drivable.

30 Water Pump problem of the 2013 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 11/13/2018

The vehicle was being driven at the time on a busy city street. We noticed some noises which was sounding like metal clanking. This became louder immediately in the span of 5mins and the temperature sensor went off on the dashboard. The vehicle was becoming unresponsive to brakes in the middle of commute traffic. Luckily we got the vehicle stopped on the side of the shoulder without any injuries to anyone. Upon getting the vehicle checked by a ase certified mechanic, it was diagnosed that the internal water pump (suggested as a bad design by them and many others have reported similar stalling situations on the internet) somehow mixed up the coolant and the oil forming a sludge and was unable to control the temperature and lack of lubrication caused the metal clanking. This has rendered the vehicle completely inoperable only after 5years. Seems like engine needs to be replaced. This raises serious safety concern that if this happened on a highway or in the midst of traffic, there could be serious loss of life or injury to the passengers. Upon checking with Mazda, it was ruled that there is no recall for something like this yet. This stance from Mazda is being utterly not responsible for their design flaws and putting a product out in the market.

31 Water Pump problem of the 2012 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 11/12/2018

I own a 2012 Mazda Cx9, which I purchased new. On Monday morning (November 12, 2018) my (check engine light came on) and so I took it immediately to the dealership for diagnosis. My car was running beautifully, so I just assumed with the weather change, perhaps the gas cap wasn't tightened, and they just needed to clear the codes. It turns out the water pump failed and apparently destroyed the entire engine. Which became apparent as I drove it to the dealership for diagnosis, per their recommendation. My car is well maintained based on the dealer recommendations and is consistently serviced at the Mazda dealership. The car is in fantastic condition with only 90,000. As an owner, I did everything by the book in terms of maintenance for my car. I am letting you know, Mazda has a serious problem and it's a safety issue, as well. If a water pump can just fail without warning and completely shut down an engine, that's not good. I think this is far more dangerous than the air bag recall, which is only a concern if you get in an accident. There is no warning on the water pump failing, as it's self-contained within the power train and the only way to check this part is by removing the entire engine, which leads me to believe this part was not designed to be a wear part. It's an engineering design flaw, that can cause bodily harm if it fails, because it takes out the entire engine and you lose control over the vehicle.

32 Water Pump problem of the 2010 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 07/15/2018

While traveling 65mph on highway with family the vehicle shut down, engine light appeared and we nearly were struck by another vehicle when pulling over. Cx-9 was towed 75 miles to mechanic who informed us coolant entered the engine from failed water pump and engine needs replacement ($4000). Mazda service manager confirmed this is not uncommon and confirmed engine will need to be replaced. When researching cx-9 water pump failure online I found many disturbing testimonials of other cx-9 owners with similar experiences. I hope nstsa takes this complaint seriously and takes action before a serious or fatal injury occurs.

33 Water Pump problem of the 2010 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 04/11/2018

Car was always serviced regularly. One day I was about to get on a busy highway into boston just before rush hour, when my car suddenly made a loud knocking noise in the engine. I immediately pulled over and then the car shut off. No lights ever came on beforehand and no leaking of fluids ever happened before incident. Had it towed to Mazda dealer, who at first told me they wouldn't be able to even look at it for 6 days. Friend worked there and got mechanics to look at it right away. They said the water pump was gone and it would cost $3500 to fix it. The worst part of it was, that according to the dealership, they know that there is a flaw with where the water pump is located in the engine, and that because of this the engine was most likely gone as well. In their words, they have replaced many water pumps in these same situations over the years, and only one car didn't need a new engine. They recommended fixing the water pump, then putting in a new engine--$10,000 worth of work. We bought this car certified pre-owned from a dealership. It only had 108,000 miles on it and the extended warranty had just ended 8 months before. I have numerous other cars in my lifetime and never have I had to replace an entire engine, just because the water pump was gone! this car should have been worth about $9k-$11k for resale, and instead Mazda wanted to give us $2k towards a down payment for leasing another of their cars. They gave us a rate that they claimed was a special one, however, I found out I could get an even better one online myself! when we called them on this and said we were tired of dealing with this, they told us they wouldn't talk with us anymore. Very disappointing to a family that carefully watches its money and budgets for emergencies, but weren't prepared to need an entirely new car before the other was even paid for! so unfair!.

34 Water Pump problem of the 2011 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 02/05/2018

Mazda cx-9 2011 has un-detected water pump leaks which cause to engine overheat and eventual engine death. Mazda corporate is unwilling to CO-operate. Car suddenly came to a halt showing engine light on.

35 Water Pump problem of the 2012 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 01/08/2018

While driving my vehicle on the highway my car would not accelerate when I pressed on the gas. My rpm's went up to 4 and would drop down when I let off the gas. Within minutes my steering wheel locked up and the car basically shut down. I had to try and drift to the shoulder in high speed traffic. When I got to the shoulder the car started smoking. I had the car towed to Mazda dealership. They told me my water pump went and leaked fluid throughout the engine, resulting in me needing a new $8,000 engine. They told me that Mazda designed the Cx9 where the water pump is in the engine block behind the timing belt and it is not something they can easily inspect when I bring my car in for service. So when a water pump goes on these Mazda cx-9's it results in the consumer needing a whole new engine. They also stated that there are no indicators that will notify you if there is a problem with the water pump to avoid this from happening. The safety issue is that my car was on the highway at the time this occurred with vehicles going at high speeds. My car basically slowed down significantly and eventually stopped and I could not turn the steering wheel to better assist me getting out of the way of the high speed traffic.
