36 Electrical System problem of the 2015 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 04/01/2024

Vehicle touch screen has aggressive and persistent “ghost touch” during vehicle operation (while in drive), which should not be possible while in drive at all. This causes any setting or feature accessible through the vehicle “infotainment” system to be activated at random leading to distracting, undesired operation. There is no setting within the “infotainment” system that allows you to disable the touch screen, leading to dangerously distracting situations. There is a voluntary extended warranty period provided by Mazda, but I was not notified required by law, nor was the warranty service offered to me when bringing my car to dealership(s) during the warranty period. Mazda is not willing to pay to fix the acknowledged safety defect.

Failure Date: 03/13/2024

The driver window, upon attempted to be let up, will start to go up then go all the way down, ignoring the function to go up. This is a safety concern, as harsh temperatures and foreign objects are able to enter the vehicle cabin at any time, including driving. The problem has been reproduced by a dealer, and the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. There are no warning indicators for this issue beyond witness the failure occur in real time.

41 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 02/16/2024

I took my vehicle into rbmc dealership due to the vehicle was experiencing electrical issues and had an open recall / still does. The dealership said I can’t have a dash cam plugged in to a charging port. Fcm / ldw / e-break staying on / throwing error codes = c1001 fsc failure type 97 & u3003 epb control module power supply failure type 16. They gave me back the car the battery failed the next day and when I called them they banned the VIN of this car to ever return to them. ( the battery was under factory warranty) the issue has only gotten worse and removed my dash cam as they demanded and now I can’t get the car fixed and the issue has gotten worse then taking the car to this dealership less then 30 days ago. They also did not perform the recall when the car was there. The car now has the fallowing codes b13d3 / c1001 / u3003 & possibly more codes because the whole dash is flashing auto light / fcm/ ldw and break. My 73 year old grandma can’t even take the car in to get fixed the refuse to touch it after it had issues when they gave it back to us and it’s under a extended warranty and was a cpo and has a extended warranty through Mazda. Car only has 31k miles on it and is dangerous for her to dive and myself. Issue has been on going for over a month.

42 Electrical System problem of the 2013 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 02/13/2024

There seems to be a lot of people who own 2012 and 2013 Mazda 3 sedans (with skyactiv-g 2. 0l and halogen type headlights) that are dealing with the same issue I am dealing with myself. I have just purchased a used 2013 Mazda 3 with skyactive technology and I noticed that when I was braking the headlights would pulse on and off and would continue while I braked. I have been told there is a TSB on this issue (attached) and Mazda is well aware of this happening. This concern is caused by inadequate alternator output controlled by the pcm when the battery is under a heavy load. They are to the point now of charging people for a doing the TSB on the car that is causing the problem of the alternator not producing the proper wattage to support both the headlights and the brake lights at the same time. There are numerous online forum entries that speak of this issue with 2012 and 2013 Mazda 3's. I am very concerned that my headlights may stop working which could result in my death or the death of my occupants of my vehicle not to mention the other motorists on the road around me if my head lights were to eventually fail at night due to lack of proper wattage to the headlights. There are videos on you tube that show these pulsing headlights on Mazda's. I believe that headlights are important enough safety issue that their failing could result in death if the headlights completely failed due to the known fault in these vehicles over time.

43 Electrical System problem of the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 02/01/2024

When stopped at a light or parked, the Mazda touchscreen continually has “ghost” touches which will randomly select on screen items repeatedly and consistently similar to the issue that Mazda issued a recall for its 2014-2016 models. The touchscreen will make noises when this happens distracting me from focusing on the road. This issue has not been confirmed by the dealer for my specific car, but is available to be inspected. There is no warning when this failure happens and seems to be random. This first started happening 3 or so months ago.

44 Electrical System problem of the 2016 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 01/11/2024

Car began to smoke. Roof caught fire at driver's visor while occupied with 2 people. Both able to exit safely. Neighbor put out with fire extinguisher. Inspected by insurance adjuster - total loss. Dealership notified. No warning lamps or messages.

45 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 01/08/2024

The contact owns a 2018 Mazda Mazda3. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 23v487000 (back over prevention) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact stated while driving 40 mph, the parking brake light illuminated, and the vehicle decelerated and was losing motive power. The contact pressed the parking brake button off and on and the warning light stopped, and the contact was able to drive normally. Additionally, the contact stated that at other instances the forward sensing camera and the lane departure systems were also independently engaging. The contact stated that it was difficult maintaining the lane she was driving in. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the failure occurred at various speeds. The contact drove the vehicle to a dealer who diagnosed the vehicle and flashed the powertrain control module (pcm). The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the failures reoccurred and the battery short circuited. The contact had taken the vehicle to a non-manufacturer dealer who used a handheld scanner and retrieved the following codes: c1001 type 97, u3003 and b13d3. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 31,321. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

46 Electrical System problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA3

47 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 12/15/2023

Touchscreen in vehicle is randomly changing without my touching the screen. This is a well-documented issue in other 2014-2016 Mazdas for which a recall has been previously issued. However, my vehicle also experiences this same issue ("ghost touch") which indicates to me that the problem is not just limited to 2014-2016 vehicles and that my 2018 Mazda should be included in the original recall to replace the defective touchscreen. The random operation of the touchscreen is a safety hazard and should be immediately recalled by Mazda.

48 Electrical System problem of the 2024 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 12/07/2023

The contact leased a 2024 Mazda m3h. The contact stated that while driving at 55–60 mph, the windshield wipers continued to stay in the on position and failed to turn off. The parking brake engaged without application and turned on and off. All the electrical systems malfunctioned and failed to turn off. The lane assist engaged and forced the vehicle to crash into the side wall. All the instrument cluster warning lights were illuminated. There were no reported injuries. There was no police report filed. There was no air bag deployment or fire. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where the mechanic reset the codes. The mechanic informed the contact that the malfunction may continue while traveling over a bump. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted regarding the failure and opened a case. The approximate failure mileage was 1,900.

49 Electrical System problem of the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 11/15/2023

Purchased the car new in April 2022. They have replaced the battery twice in the last year. They now tell me that there are no replacement batteries made for my vehicle and have acknowledged a problem with the battery made by johnson control. The battery will not hold a proper charge after the vehicle is shut off. They have offered a loaner car but cannot tell me how long it would take to resolve the issue. In order to drive the vehicle I have to carry a jump pack in the car with me in case the battery goes dead and will not start.

50 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 11/01/2023

There is a known issue with the infotainment system referred to as ghost tough. This causes the system to randomly change stations/songs, etc while the car is in motion. There is also a delamination issue. Mazda issued a recall for 2014-2016 vehicles, however a quick internet search shows that this issue continues to be a problem. This issue can be extremely distracting as the driver attempts to stop the system from changing.

51 Electrical System problem of the 2012 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 10/28/2023

Headlight flickering and turns off and on randomly.

52 Electrical System problem of the 2015 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 10/27/2023

The "infotainment" system, which includes media, navigation, hands-free calling, and the backup camera function, frequently malfunctions. The system will either freeze, or it will execute button presses on its own. The result is that it will change audio selection, make hands free calls via the connected phone, etc. On its own with no driver interaction, which is distracting while driving and could and has caused hazardous driving conditions. While I am listing the most recent occurrence in this form, this has been occurring on nearly every drive for the last 2 years. This typically happens in stop-and-go traffic. The vehicle has a manual transmission and the movement in the center console caused by shifting may be causing loose electrical connections to be disturbed and contribute to the behavior.

53 Electrical System problem of the 2019 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 09/17/2023

The vehicle's battery has gone dead on several occasions since replacing the oem battery. The oem battery which was approximately 3 years old, also had gone dead, prompting its replacement. The battery has gone dead within 1-2 days of not using the car. Charging the battery by running it is only a temporary fix as the car needs to be constantly driven in order to charge the battery, which is not usual and customary for the maintenance of a vehicle. This cannot be functioning to manufacturer's specifications, as I find it extremely difficult to believe that manufacturer's specifications stipulate to drive the car with more frequency. This is a safety issue. Should this happen during the winter months, an individual may be left stranded. The NHTSA must demand Mazda to issue a safety recall to fix this safety issue.

54 Electrical System problem of the 2016 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 09/12/2023

The backup camera is flickering and with distorted image. I called customer service but didn't provide information or solution of how to solve the issue even though they were aware of it.

55 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 09/11/2023

I became aware of this recall for my backup camera and one day I closed my trunk wasnt expecting it too affect my car but it did!! the rear backup camera was flickering and distorted as I was back out of a parking spot and almost got rear ended by someone and Mazda told me by the middle of January they should have a fix for this its a camera and a wiring harness and fastener no need to have too wait this long for something that can cause a major accident its not only happened once but twice out of nowhere I have pictures and video recordings of it!!.

56 Electrical System problem of the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 09/02/2023

I was driving on the highway and decided to switch int the left lane so I sped up and heard a big bang and what sounded like my bumper being dragged against the ground. I see on my dashboard that there’s an electrical and engine malfunction so I pullover and pop the hood. A bunch of smoke comes out and I see a little fire so me and my friends run and call the police. The police and firefighters arrived just as the fire was getting large and it had engulfed the front right side of my car. If the notification that there was a malfunction didn’t come on, I feel as if we could’ve been hurt much worse or even have died. I’m not much of a person that knows about cars and it sounded like my bumper was scraping and by the amount of times I’ve scraped my bumper, I believed it until I saw my notification. The vehicle is still being inspected for cause of fire and this vehicle has never had this problem before.

57 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 09/01/2023

Mazda had previously issued a special service plan (ssp) to remediate issues with their Mazda connect center display (infotainment system), specifically "ghost touches" and "spider cracking" of the screen: [xxx] this special service plan only applied to 2014-2016 models of the Mazda3. I own a 2018 Mazda3 which has the exact same issue described in the above service plan. Searching online, I am far from the only person who is affected by this issue that continues to be present in newer models of the Mazda3. Mazda should replace my (and others) infotainment system, as it is unusable and distracting in it's current condition. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

58 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 08/17/2023

The infotainment screen has begun cracking and causing a ghost touch issue. This is distracting and dangerous.

59 Electrical System problem of the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 08/01/2023

The rearview camera is flickering and sometimes does not work at all. The ntsa recall 23v-487 (manufacturer number 6023g) is issued for that problem back in July 2023. However as of today, 7 months later, the recall is not implemented and the dealer refuses to fix the issue saying that the recall is still not incomplete. This is safety hazard which continues for 7 months and should be fixed ASAP.

60 Electrical System problem of the 2012 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 07/18/2023

The contact owned a 2012 Mazda motor. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the contact woke up to the fire department extinguishing the fire in the vehicle. The fire department stated that the fire began under the hood and that the fire was due to the electrical system. The vehicle was deemed totaled by the insurance company. A police report and a fire report were filled out. The vehicle has not been towed yet. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.

61 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 07/14/2023

This is in reference to the recall for the rear view camera on 7/14/2023 manufacturer recall number6023g NHTSA recall number23v-487 Mazda has still not come up with an adequate remedy solution. The dealerships continue to state that they do not have the parts to replace it even though this recall was made 8 months ago. This is unacceptable as the rear view camera is an essential safety mechanism. If Mazda is unable to repair this defect, drivers should be allowed to get it repaired at other more component repair shops and be reimbursed.

62 Electrical System problem of the 2014 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 07/14/2023

The is an open recall on this vehicle since 7/14/23. It is for rear camera wiring harness. If has been 7 months and there still is no information about a repair to this defect. When will Mazda address this issue and have repair parts?.

63 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 07/14/2023

Nhtsa: #23v-487 this recall has not been resolved yet despite it being established in July 2023. States no remedy available, and this is very frustrating.

64 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 07/14/2023

Mazda issued a recall for backup camera failures on specific vehicles over 1 year ago on July 14 2023 (Mazda recall 6023g, NHTSA #23v-487). According to Mazda dealerships I contacted, parts are still not available. Drivers impacted have been waiting for repair components related to this safety recall for over a year. Simply submitting this as a complaint about an ongoing recall resolution.

65 Electrical System problem of the 2016 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 07/14/2023

Nhtsa recall # 23v-487 manufacturer recall # 6023g issued July 14, 2023 after repeated phone calls to the manufacturer and the Mazda dealership, the recall has not been fixed. I have been told that the parts are not available. As of this date, 16 months after the recall, Mazda has not fixed the problem. I have been told by the manufacturer and the Mazda dealership, that parts are not available. The manufacturer told me that they have no date when parts will be available. I have asked to speak with a manager at the manufacturer and was told that there is no one else to talk to except customer service. I asked for a contact at the corporate level that I could send an email to, and was told that there was no email address available. They have suggested that I get it fixed at my own cost and submit a claim that may or may not be reimbursed. I consider the distorted rear view camera picture to be a safety hazard when backing up. I believe that 16 months should be plenty of time to fix this problem and that Mazda just does not want to fix a manufacturing problem on a 8 year old car.

66 Electrical System problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 07/10/2023

The contact owns a 2010 Mazda Mazda3. The contact stated upon opening the driver's side door, she noticed that the front driver's side seat had independently moved closer to the steering wheel. The contact stated that the seat failed to move back to the original position after several attempts. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to squeeze herself into the seat and drove to the dealer, who informed the contact that the driver's side seat bolts needed to be broken to move the seat. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 17v082000 (seats); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 61,000.

67 Electrical System problem of the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 07/03/2023

Vehicles center console display screen suffers from ghost touches. The display registers inputs from the touchscreen with no one touching the display this is the same issue that is on the 14-16 versions of this vehicle. The display self navigates causing a substantial distraction and increasing the likelihood of a crash. As well on a few instances self navigates through the menu and sometimes enables or diables adas system features collision prevention etc.

68 Electrical System problem of the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 05/18/2023

Automatic emergency braking suddenly engaged while driving on the highway. The car decelerated abruptly to a complete stop, causing the driver behind to rear-end me. There were no vehicles or obstacles in front of the car when the brakes engaged - the closest car was at least 100 feet in front of me. This collision was clearly the result of a faulty automatic emergency braking system. I do not feel safe driving the car knowing this malfunction could happen again, especially at highway speeds. Sudden unexplained braking presents a huge safety hazard to all drivers, increasing the likelihood for collisions and injuries. There were no warnings or symptoms prior to the unexpected brake system activation. After the brakes activated mistakenly, warning beeps and “brake!” message appeared. Car has collision damage and has not yet been inspected by dealer. Police report filed.

69 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 04/26/2023

This is related to the existing recall with the backup camera. I have intermittently experience, fuzzing of the review camera. I have also experienced total loss of the review camera. In addition, I have had occasionally experienced the panel system not switching over to the rear view camera. The issues appear to be associated with opening and closing the rear hatch and if occurred could sometimes be resolved by turning the car off and back on. The issue was persistent and occurring on a more or less regular basis, but then in the last month it has ceased to occur though I have been opening and closing the hatch on a regular basis. . . I had been avoiding opening and closing the hatch to avoid losing the camera :( I am concerned that due to the intermittent nature of the failure that when I take the vehicle in under the recall that it will not occur and the dealership will consider the matter closed even if it reoccurs later. Note that in the attached pictures the vehicle is on and in reverse, but the screen is not showing the rear camera view.

70 Electrical System problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 01/19/2023

The transmission control module (tcm) has gone out on my car, causing it to shift to 2nd gear while doing 75mph with cars around me, and would no longer shift out of 2nd gear, or into reverse. It was an extremely dangerous situation that made me come very close to wrecking into a car, as well as the many cars behind me that had to emergency brake due to my rapid deceleration, especially without and brake lights coming on because it was engine braking. Doing a simple google search show that this is an extremely well-known problem effecting almost every Mazda 3 that used this tcm in 2010-2011. Any mechanic will tell you it's a known problem, and that it was due to where and how Mazda placed the computer, which causes it to overheat and fail without warning. I'm not sure why there has not been a recall on this issue with how prevalent it has been, and how easily recognized it is by mechanics. It is not a cheap fix, and can cause many other major issues leading up to requiring a full new transmission, if the problem did not already cause the car to wreck!.
