I was slowing down to stop behind another car at a red light and my car slowed down but did not fully stop. I barely bumped the car in front of me at probably less than 5 miles per hour but my air bags went off. There was no damage to my car other than the air bags exploding and my insurance company wants to total my car because of the air bags exploding. I have second degree burns and a cut from the air bag.

Failure Date: 06/02/2015

The 2005 Mazda Tribute initially started to be sporadically sluggish/hesitation when stepping on the gas. It seemed like there was a delay from when I pressed on the gas pedal to when the vehicle actually accelerated. On 6/4/15, a couple days after first experiencing the sluggishness/hesitant acceleration, the vehicle stalled/lost power while driving 55 miles per hour on a busy road. Fortunately, I was able to coast over to the side of the road. Within a few minutes I was able to restart the vehicle and continue on my way. The vehicle continued to be sluggish at acceleration and would randomly stall while driving and/or idling. At this point with the vehicle's mechanical issues, the check engine light was not on- even though there was something major wrong with the vehicle. Over the next couple weeks I had the vehicle in the shop three times. The first time in the shop (6/6/15) the check engine light was still not on- -so they were not able to diagnose the problem. They shop suggested replacing the fuel filter and do a fuel system clean-- which I did. The vehicle continued to be sluggish/hesitant when accelerating & randomly stalled while driving and/or idling. About a week later the check engine light finally came on. I took the vehicle to the shop & they indicated the code was telling them that cylinder 2 was misfiring. No other codes were read. All the spark plugs were replaced, coils were checked (in good condition). The check engine light did not come back on; however, the vehicle continued to run sluggish and stall while driving (multiple times when I was going 55-65 mph). On 6/24/15 the car stalled again but this time it would not restart. I had the vehicle towed to the shop & they indicated the computer was dead and needed to be replaced. I contacted Mazda and they denied there were issues with the Mazda Tribute computers and said it was just my vehicle.

Failure Date: 02/14/2015

After turning a corner, the car started uncontrollably accelerating and did not respond when the brake pedal was fully engaged. The engine continued to grow louder as the car continued to gain speed. The driver's foot was not on the gas pedal as the car accelerated, in fact, the driver pushed the brake pedal down as far as it could go. Engaging the brake did not affect the speed of the vehicle, which continued to accelerate with no pressure applied to the gas pedal and consistent pressure being applied to the brake pedal. The driver attempted to downshift the car while pressing on the horn in an attempt to alert other drivers and pedestrians that the vehicle was out of control. The driver continued to downshift the car while holding down the brake pedal and used the emergency brake before the car eventually slowed down and stopped. The driver put the car in park when it stopped, turned it off, and called a tow truck. The driver called madza to file a report.

Failure Date: 08/16/2014

Driving vehicle on a residential road, as I accelerated up small hill, transmission did not shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. Rpms spiked to 5000 then the transmission shifted hard into next gear. Since this incident the problem has occurred more frequently, no matter what the elevation. Because of this problem the Tribute has no power and no acceleration until shifting. This is extremely dangerous when pulling out or crossing traffic. Today, each time I am at a stop, the transmission sticks in 2nd gear until the rpms spike then it will shift. The Tribute has only 76500 miles. It is adult owned and well maintained. Please review this as a possible recall issue to avoid so many others spending thousands on repairs and possible injury from accident!.

My 17 year old daughter was pulling out of a parking lot to cross 4 lanes of traffic and lost all acceleration! stopping in the middle of the highway. I was in the turning lane watching a semi and 20 cars headed straight for my daughter. Luckily she thought quick enough to put the car in reverse, since she was on a slight hill, she rolled back into the parking lot. Ford has issued an extended warranty for the throttle body on the escapes (sister to the Tribute) for this very issue. Mazda has only issued a special bulletin that the Tribute can loose acceleration, but did not say how to fix it. I found all this information after that fact that my daughter almost died!!! we had the vehicle at a Mazda dealership the Friday & Saturday before. They apparently did not know about the issue and all they did was clean out the throttle body, and said that should take care of it. Why did Mazda not have to do the same as Ford? we should not have to wait until someone dies. It is a very serious problem with these vehicles! consumers with these autos need to be notified!!! Ford has not notified anyone either, we also have a 2011 Ford escape which has not had the issue, but we are taking it to the dealership today just to check it.

When approaching a 4-way intersection during daylight hours, the light turned yellow then red. I tried to stop by pressing my brake pedal. My vehicle did not slow down, but continued to accelerate up hill. I pressed as hard as possible but my vehicle went through the intersection and I ran into the side of another vehicle. I was originally going about 30mph and when I hit the other vehicle, I was going about 25mph. My vehicle stopped after hitting the other vehicle but continued to rev higher. I was injured when my arms bent the steering wheel forward, the seat belt bruised me and my right foot (talus bone) was broken by the pressure on the brake pedal. I required surgery. I was out of work for 3 weeks and wore a cast for 7 weeks. The policeman who reported to the accident site discovered the gas pedal was half way down to the floor and stuck. The other driver and a witness said they heard the vehicle revving after it stopped after impact. The vehicle cut off after about 30 seconds on its own and would not restart. There are similar reports of this happening on the website but no recalls have been issued. I had owned the vehicle for 5 years and 9 months at the time of the accident. The vehicle was totaled.

When cold, gas pedal will not depress. Becomes firm and resistant to pressure. Have to slam on pedal, but receive no power from engine---happens alot when trying to turn corners, will not accelerate- can cause severe if not fatal accident if this occurs at the wrong time. Please force Mazda to issue recall for this part, could be related to throttle body as well.

While driving on freeway during peak traffic (stop and go) all of a sudden my car would not go when pressing on gas pedal and wrench light came on. Because I was on a slight decline my car very slowly crossed two lanes of oncoming traffic and finally made it on the side of the freeway. Car started to shake really bad before turning off ignition. Got car towed to dealer and they couldn't fine anything wrong after keeping car for one week. Picked up car on 12/12/13 and same exact problem happen again on 1/8/14, had car towed to dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong after keeping car for one week. Picked up car on 1/18/14. They said they can't do anything unless the wrench comes out. My concern is when I'm driving on the freeway and cars are going 45 - 60 mph, I'll get hit from the back and probably get badly injured or may even die!.

Just started noticing that when I let my foot off the gas, the car does not "naturally" DE-celerate/slow down, it keeps going! have to press the brake to slow down from anywhere from 30-45 mph. I see there was a recall August 2000, this was before car wsa purchased in November 2000 by my boyfriend, who later gave me the car in 2009, how would we have known such a defect existed prior to purchase? what is the dealer/manufacturers obligation to fix it before it was sold to an individual? haven't taken the car to dealer yet, but we plan to. This is a highly unsafe condition. I do not feel I should have to bear the expense to have it repaired.
