1 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 01/20/2020

Driver is experiencing a heavy odor of gasoline after fill up. Vehicle is not overfilled/topped off. Vehicle was sitting inside garage when owner noticed a heavy fuel odor and notified fire department to investigate. Per recommendations of fire department, keep vehicle out of garage until issue could be inspected by a qualified mechanic. Mechanic inspected fuel system and found fuel leak under rear seats near fuel pump/sending unit. Mercedes benz refuses repair issue saying it is not a safety issue. Gasoline fumes/vapors are especially heavy inside a single car garage, and if a ignition source is introduced it could become fatal.

3 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 04/08/2018

Fuel leaking to the inside of passenger compartment under access port under rear seat cushion, that's the location of the fuel pump. I made an appointment with tucson Mercedes Benz to inspect the car since I believed that a mercedes recall would correct the problem. I had several discussions with service advisor mark schofield and he assured me twice that the recall is in place and they would fix the fuel system defects without charge. He called me this evening and told me all about why tucson mercedes would not cover the repair, I was told the extended warranty program ended 2/21/2018. I bought the car on 4/5/18, filled it up with gas on 4/08/18 and the car was filled with fumes that night as well as in my garage. Tucson mercedes first said that the tank was leaking at the vent tube between the left and right access points. He told me that the cost would normally be $3000 but he reduced it to $2000. I asked mark how the fuel could run across the top of the tank, climb the locking ring and puddle on top of the left side fuel pump? he also told me that mercedes could not just replace a portion of the fuel system without replacing the entire fuel system, including the tank. Also, not true. He said that upon a second examination was made and there appears to be a crack on top of the fuel pump and now that's where the leak is coming from. Now his price to repair all is $770 + tax. After a few words more, the price dropped to $700 + tax. I feel that mercedes should just fix my vehicle and call it good. This learned that this car had a fuel pump installed at 59,000 miles. I missed their self imposed cut off date by about 6 weeks, not so much time for such a serious manufacturing defect to health and safety. The fumes inside my car and garage could have caused a fire or worse yet, an explosion. The problem first appeared after the first time I filled the tank.

6 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 11/01/2016

The car has fuel (gasoline) vapors inside and outside of the car. The fuel sending unit or the fuel pump in the saddle gas tank under the back seats leaks gasoline and the smell makes me sick. I am afraid the car will explode if the vapor is present at the combustible ratio of gasoline to air.

Inspected the vehicle and found the left side (driver's) fuel pump seal is leaking causing fuel to puddle and saturate inspection plate. The fuel wicks past inspection plate gasket and into the passenger compartment saturating the area directly under the rear seat. 11 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 10/07/2014

I had a gasoline to leak in the well under the passenger seats in the back of my 2003 E320 Mercedes Benz. This is a serious safety hazard. About 2 weeks ago, I had to spend $1200. 00 to replace a fuel pump on my 2003 e 320 Mercedes Benz. When will Mercedes Benz recall these models for fuel pump problems? they were never able to detect the problems while this car was under warranty, but now it's coming up 11 years later. Over 40 complaints have been sent to the consumer product safety commission (cpsc) about this problem, but mercedes is still saying that there are no recalls, nor do they have any knowledge of these fuel leak problems. There are also owners in other states with the exact problem, but listed below is a complaint on cpsc's website from a laurel, MD 2003 E320 owner with the same problems that I'm experiencing: Jul 31, 2011 - laurel, MD - gasoline my 2003 Mercedes Benz E320, in which the fuel filters are located underneath the rear seat, had a powerful gasoline order inside the vehicle. The benz repair shop stated it was a hairline fracture in the fuel filter and it was leaking gas. They replaced the filters, but I've seen them replace the same type filters in 2008 models. I think this is a defective product and a safety hazard. If me or my spouse had been a smoker, or caused a spark, we could've potentially caused a fatal explosion. I think this needs to be investigated.

12 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 01/06/2014

When the gas tank is filled over 75% there is a strong fuel smell inside and outside the vehicle. If I fill less than 75% there is no problem. I have experimented with fuel levels from full ( not topping off ) down to the 75% and will have the fuel smell. The smell will cease whenever the level drops below the 75%. Leak is coming from fuel pump seal / gas tank. Called multiple dealers and they acknowledged this is common problem.

13 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 12/21/2013

I brought my 2005 mercedes E320 [purchased oct. 2014] in for an oil change Jan. 30, 2014. I mentioned to the service person a noise [like something broke] I heard while out of town visiting. He changed my oil and also found/replace a broken rear suspension spring. This occurred within 3 months of purchase. Repair cost: $551. 17. My second incident occured Feb. 19th. I noticed a puddle of fluid underneath the vehicle [not sure what kind of fluid] and immediately brought the car back to the dealer for service. I was told the transmission servo solenoid seals required replacing. Repair cost: $157. 84. The third incident was reported Apr. 21, 2014. I noted an increasingly bad odor inside the car since the first day of purchase, but wasn't sure exactly what it was as I was still trying to identify it. I finally realized it was gas I was smelling [intermittantly] inside the vehicle for the last six months. It turned out to be leaking fuel from the left fuel pump seal (lfps) underneath the rear seat. Repair cost: $161. 31. The fuel odor got worse after the replacing the lfps. Most noticeably after filling the car with gas. I've also identified gasoline leaking from the drivers' side rear quarter that puddled by the tire. My feeling at this time, repairs may be onging for my E320, that I really like.

18 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 04/05/2013

I took my vehicle to my regular independent mercedes-benz mechanic because there was strong gasoline smell inside the passenger area of the car and I noticed there was a small puddle of gasoline under the car whenever I filled up my tank. My mechanic inspected the car and found gasoline pooled up in the recess where the fuel pump attached to the fuel tank. He informed me that the leaking fuel posed a serious safety hazard and could possibly lead to a fire, or even a possible explosion should I park inside my garage. He said the water heater pilot light or any other source of spark could ignite the fumes and burn my house down. In addition, he stated he had seen this same problem many times before and that mercedes-benz has been aware of the problem for many years but refuses to accept that they had installed a defective part in the thousands of vehicles of this model they produced. It would simply be too expensive to remedy. If I wanted it repaired it would be at my own expense since mercedes-benz is accepting no responsibility for this known issue. The leak has caused my vehicle to be unsafe to operate.

19 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 03/22/2013

I own a 2004 E320 with only 44,652 miles. After every fill up strong order of gas from left side near back seat area also check engine light will always comes on. I took car to a mb mechanic trained by mb he removed the rear seat and left fuel sending unit cover , found a huge puddle of gas on and round gas tank pump area. I was told the pump seal was no good, I had the pump and seal replaced, filled tank again with the same result. Finally, last Friday, with the seat and sending unit cover off we filled the tank and drove the two miles back to the mechanic shop, when we arrived the whole area around the pump was full of fuel, upon inspection one could see the fuel running from the top of the fuel tank and puddle around base of the fuel pump. We video the fuel running from top of the fuel tank. Contacted local mb dealer where I purchased the vehicle but was told there is no warranty on vehicle. The dealer will inspect and repair the vehicle but the expense will be on me. I don't allow anyone in my family to drive this car because of this problem. This is very dangerous situation that needs to be address.

The fuel pump and/or gasket is leaking gasoline into the area under the back seat on the drivers side. The first time we noticed the problem was on Nov 1, 2012, but it has happened several times since then. We can no longer fill the tank to the full position without fuel leaking. We have replaced the fuel gasket, but it has since leaked again. This is a great safety concern to me, and it should be corrected by Mercedes Benz at no cost to me.

28 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 02/09/2012

When the fuel tank is filled 100% there is a very strong fuel odor, which can be smelled in the outdoors but is extremely strong when parked in the attached garage. This odor is so strong that it enters the house, and we have to leave the garage door wide open for fear of a spark causing a fire. If one looks under the car there is no dripping. The odor does not go away until the fuel tank is no longer completely full. The fuel leak stops after we are down a couple gallons from completely full fuel tank. I have pulled the back seat and seen that the there is gasoline pooling around the fuel pump (fuel delivery module). I am concerned that a rear end collision would cause the leaking fuel to combust.
