Filled up gas tank and had fuel odor inside car and fuel leaking outside the car until fuel level was around 3/4 of a tank. 3 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 03/28/2019

For several months there has been a strong odor of gasoline after fueling the vehicle. The odor has become steadily worse and we took the vehicle to the dealership for assistance. We were told that the fuel tank was cracked and had to be replaced. When I inquired how this could have occurred, I was told it could be due to impact or trauma (which is impossible as the vehicle was not involved in any incident). Was informed that it would cost $2,300. 00 to repair vehicle. Called mb-USA and asked for assistance. Was informed that there was not a recall on the fuel tank and I would have to pay the cost. As the vehicle was unsafe, I had the work performed and received a 10% "goodwill" discount. Picked up vehicle and drove a short distance and continued to smell fuel. Called dealership and they came to pick-up. Acknowledged that they did not tighten a clamp or something. We picked it up again and the odor was persistent. Immediately called the dealership back and we subsequently traded the vehicle in. Bottom line. . . . I do not think that a fuel tank should fail on a vehicle with less than 80,000 miles. I have the old tank and believe that mb should reimbursement for the cost of the tank.

8 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 02/05/2018

Daughter drives this car. I have owned it since 2005. Mercedes never notified us nor made us aware of an extended warranty on the defective fuel tanks. A mechanic told us about the warranty and told us to contact mercedes immediately. February 2018 I contacted corporate office and they told me twice that I needed to have the car taken to mercedes dealership and have them confirmed the issue. Twice mercedes corporate office reps told me to drive it to dealership and have them evaluate the car, contact corporate for an " exception". I did just so. The car runs okay, however, the strong gas smell inside the car is frightening and I had the car towed to the mercedes dealership because I could not chance my daughter dying in a automobile explosion. As a matter of fact, we have been renting cars from enterprise for my daughter for the past 2 months since her car is out of commission. For god's sake, she's our daughter and the car could explode! the dealership confirmed that the fuel tank is indeed defective and is eligible for the repair. However, the reps at corporate decided to not to extend the "exception" after all. Mercedes never notified us of the fuel tank defect/recall/warranty extension. Though it's drivable, I refuse to have my daughter risk her life. I did everything corp office said I should do and now they are back peddling. They are making us pay for the roundtrip towing and this is unfair. Gross misrepresentation. Driving with a fuel tank leak is deadly. They need to honor this repair. They should not have instructed me to tow a car to their authorized dealership if they knew from the beginning that they were not going to make the exception.

Recently on today 7-12-16 at 174,000 miles the display on my 2003 E320 4s Mercedes Benz all of a suddenly displayed an illuminated message in bright white : "brake" service brake visit workshop. My vehicle was in motion on a busy major highway when the hydraulic brake system exhibited this message. Shortly prior to this messaging, I notice my brakes were more hard to apply pressure,. I am glad I wasn't driving fast, this could have been a serious tragedy to myself as well as those others on the expressway just a as I was. 2. Problem with my gas tank after I fill the tank , the gas fumes become so intense after parking this vehicle inside my garage. I didn't know there were a recall. Is this fuel safety hazard recall still in effect? if so, whom do I contact to have it repaired at no cost to me the owner? 3. 4 months prior in March 2016 I incurred a problem with the coolant fluid leaking into the transmission resulting in a major monetary expense out of my pockets above $5000. Can this be covered by the manufactuer so I may be able to be reimbursed?.

15 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 01/15/2016

I have a 2005 E320 Mercedes Benz. Every time we fill the tank we get a strong gas smell inside the vehicle. After we drive the vehicle for a while with the windows open the smell dissipates. The smell is coming from under the rear seats. I suspect the seal on the gas tank has failed. This is a design flaw that should be taken care of by the manufacture. It is not a normal wear and tear item. My concern is fuel fumes can impair ones driving ability and leaking fuel can create a safety hazard. With the number of complaints that I have come across I feel that there should be a re-call to correct.

Re complaint number 10778442 since the last report the situation has gotten much worse. Initially the gasoline fumes would occur while the tank was more than 1/2 full. Now the fumes are very very strong when the tank is full but remain strong even as the fuel indicator nears the empty mark. This this the only vehicle I own and my family and myself cannot remain in the car for more than a few moments. The fume are overpowering and this is a major health concern wise as well as a chance of fire.

19 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 06/30/2015

After fueling and the gas tank indicator shows full there is a very strong odor of gasoline in the cabin it is so strong that we must drive with windows down and sunroof open. In rainy or cold weather that is not a good option. The fumes dissipate after the fuel indicator nears the 1/2 full mark is very unhealthy to breathe in these fumes and there is also a fire risk.

23 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 1998 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 01/21/2015

On Wednesday, January 21, 2015, 4:45 pm, an attendant at sam's club gas pumps, tulsa hills shopping center, tulsa, ok, overflowed the gas tank, creating a spill large enough that absorbent materials was used to soak up the gas on the pavement (video available from sam's). Upon leaving, the engine died before exiting the station. Restarted and died again at the first traffic light about 1/4 mile away. Restarted and abnormal noises were heard during the next mile and while stopped at a traffic light, there was a large explosion under the hood, producing lots of black smoke but no extended fire. Local police helped in removing the car from traffic and later loading the car on a wrecker. The description from the mbz repair facility gave this explanation and repaired the car at a cost of $2,600. The gas overflow caused the charcoal canister to fill up with liquid gas and when the car was started the liquid gas was sucked into the input manifold, causing an undetected explosion and cracking the manifold. The explosions got larger as the car was driven and finally an explosion blew most of one end of the input manifold off (manifold available). End.

On Thursday October 23, 2014, I took my 2004 E320 sedan to schumacher Mercedes Benz in scottsdale arizona. I asked them to check out a 'check engine' light and informed them that there was an occasional strong odor of gasoline. On Friday October 24, 2014, the dealership called to inform me that the gas tank and sensors needed to be replaced because of a leak. My service coordinator also told me that it is a common / known problem with the make and model of my vehicle. The cost to repair it would be $4000 + I contacted the NHTSA website and learned that there is an open investigation and a complaint opened March 15, 2013 ,,, however there has been no recall issued as of this time. The car has not yet been repaired. On October 24th, I took it to a repair shop who works exclusively on Mercedes Benz vehicles, for a second opinion / evaluation.

32 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 03/22/2014

A strong fuel odor was noticed on the rear driver's side of the vehicle after driving the car with a nearly full tank of gas. I removed the access panel beneath the rear seat on the driver's side and discovered fuel collecting in the well around the fuel sending unit. This is the second time in 3 years/30,000 miles that I have had this fuel leak. The first leak was repaired 3 years ago by replacing the fuel sending unit with a mercedes oem unit. Clearly, mercedes has not addressed the part/materials reliability issue that so many owners of the w211 e-class are experiencing. I am convinced that this is a design flaw in the fuel system of this vehicle and a recall of this vehicle model is warranted. This very well may be the last Mercedes Benz vehicle that I ever purchase. Photos of the leaking fuel sender can be provided upon request.

Failure Date: 01/17/2014

Fuel smells from the tank fuel. It sometimes leaks and marks can be seen on the ground. The smell is worse when I put full tank of gas. The smell is so strong that I have to park the car far from the house to avoid endengaring my family since the smell can get into the house if the car is parked in my garage. Driving in such condition puts me at risk since the smell is so bothersome. I have had to roll the window down even in very cold weather in order to get fresh air. I went to a mercedes dealership where they suggested that the tank was the problem and it needed to be replace at my cost. According to them, it was not my fault that the tank had issues but they refused to pay for it.
