Mercedes Benz E320 owners have reported 88 problems related to other fuel system tank assembly (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I noticed a strong fuel smell after a fillup, one more than one occasion, and the repair shop diagnosed a problem with the sensors and that fuel had leaked onto the top of the tank. . They did a repair job of over $1000 in December 2013. Then 3 months later, after a fill up I again noticed the strong fuel smell when the car was parked in my garage, and this time the service repair shop said it was an actual fuel tank leak. Further online research indicates that this problem is not unique to me and has happened to many e series cars and yet Mercedes Benz hasn't addressed it with a recall (yet part wholesalers have multiple replacement tanks in stock).

There is a very strong smell of gasoline in the cabin of the car after I fill the gas tank. The smell persists until about one-eighth to one-quarter of the tank has been used then dissipates. I have read where this is a common problem for this class and year of mercedes. I just purchased the car. Is there a recall to solve this problem? if so, is there a reference number? if not, is there a service bulletin issued by your agency or by mercedes to its dealers to fix the problem. Mercedes should be compelled to fix this. The gas fumes are nearly incapacitating and certainly impair safe driving.
I have a fuel undercarriage leak from the rear passenger left side with a strong gas smell within the cabin of my car- this problem has been referenced many times in the mb forums and seems to be a national problem. I would appreciate a through investigation regarding this issue before a fatality ensues because of a faulty plastic piece designed by mb. This problem occurs when the tank is filled with gas, but over filled. I implore to do the right thing an implementing a recall for corrective actions. Best regards, bob coleman.

When the gas tank is full, the car smells like pure gas. I took it to the dealership to be fixed, but they did a "patch" and made the smell so bad that it gave us all headaches even with the windows down. The dealership has had my car for 3 months now and nothing has been done. Mercedes needs to fix the issue, or give me a new car!.
Filled up my car with gas. Came home, parked it in the garage. Next morning noticed a very strong fuel order in garage. Took it to mechanic and said the fuel tank was cracked and leaking gas vapors. Scared me as my natural gas water heater is in the garage as well.
I filed with your agency last year and never heard back I am the owner of a 2005 e class . After several calls to mercedes , the fuel tank was replaced at the dealership here in seattle last year. I paid for the repairs and mercedes paid for the new tank. My out of pocket for this repair was close to $2000. 00 it has been apprx 15 months and I have notice again some fuel smell inside my vehicle. Of course I was not given any paperwork for the replacement of the fuel tank, but is is on record at the dealership. I fell like I am driving on top of a fuel bomb and will I be the 1st victim of a terrible accident. I feel stuck with this car and the dealership pretends to have never heard of this fuel leak and fumes penetrating the interior of the car. What is happening with this issue? do not let mercedes get away with that. Thank you, pierre rajotte 2868 hi crest rd langley, wa 98260 206-495-1270.

Fuel leak, smell of gasoline in garage. Possible leaking fuel tank, leaking fuel sending unit or fuel sensor malfunction. It is dangerous and may cause fire or explosion due to the fuel leak. It needs to be recalled to fix this dangerous issue.
Vehicle was bought on 3/19/13 from a used car dealer. On 3/22/13 tank was filled and strong gas smell was noticed when parked in garage. Had mechanic replace both sending units on top of tank on 4/5/13. The problem with smell still exists everytime tank is filled, and seems to be concentrated by the left rear wheel well. We are very concerned, and are convinced that there is a defect with the fuel tank, which is most definitely a safety issue.

Reference NHTSA action # pe12001 February 8, 2013 I bought a car from a dealer. On a next day I filled full tank and found gasoline smell from driver side next to the rear door. I did some research on internet and found many similar issue. To verify if I have same problem I raise a rear seat cushion, unscrew 6 bolts on small bay from driver side to get access to fuel sending unit and found a crack on it along with gasoline spilling over.
Whenever I fill my gas tank, there is a strong smell of gas in the garage that persist until I've driven approx. 100 miles or more. I've since started parking outside for fear that the gas water heater for my house (which is located in the garage), may explode because the smell is so strong. I went online and noticed that there are a lot of the same complaints for the E320. Is there some kind of recall for this problem? if not, does Mercedes Benz have any responsibility for this repair which seems to be a plastic part on top of the fuel tank?.
For the last several weeks we have smelled a gas odor in our garage and on the inside of our 2005 Mercedes Benz e-320. Since an odor of gas creates the possibility of a fire or environmental concern we scheduled an appointment for 01/22/2013 (today). The car is currently in fields motorcars - 209 s. Lake parker avenue, lakeland, FL 33801. We are also having the annual service done at this time. After inspection this morning, the mechanic advised our service writer that there is a leak in the fuel tank. Based on their recommendation the fuel tank is being replaced. Any fuel leak has a potential for dangerous and fatal consequences. The cost for this is approximately $2000. 00. I have been advised the fuel tank leak is not covered by the factory warranty, nor is there a government mandated recall. The vehicle is tentatively scheduled to be completed and returned to us tomorrow, 01/23/2013. In researching the fuel tank leak in our vehicle, I have found there is ample information indicating the fuel tank leaking issue is not limited to my vehicle. I also noted that in February, 2012 the NHTSA has opened up an investigation into this matter. In addition, the texas law firm wigington, rumley dunn & ritch along with georgia law firm conley griggs partin filed a class action lawsuit on July 18, 2012, against mercedes-benz, USA and its german parent corporation daimler on behalf of thousands of consumers who purchased model year 2003-2009 mercedes-benz e-class vehicles. As a consumer placed in these dangerous circumstances without relief by the manufacturer, I desire to share this information with NHTSA to assist them with their investigation regarding the 2003 ¿ 2009 Mercedes Benz e class fuel tank leaks. We have owned the vehicle since new and it has approximately 44,000 miles on the odometer.
2003 E320 Mercedes Benz - fuel tank leaking - dealers wants to charge over $2,000 to repair.
I noticed a strong gas smell in the cabin. There was a pool of gas when I removed the rear seat. It came out of the top of the fuel tank. I also got a obe2 error code. Nhtsa should do something to protect citizens.
Fuel leak in fuel tank. Around sending unit and somewhere else I can't track down.
Very strong fuel odor from car, looked under car expecting a leak but could not see anything, researched online further found similar stories posted by other owners of this vehicle. Asked my Mercedes Benz mechanic, he confirmed that there was a problem with the fuel tanks on these cars and benz refuses to issue a recall on them! cost according to my mechanic is approx $2000.
I took my 2007 Mercedes Benz blutech to the dealer for the once a year "b" service. While they were doing the service, they noticed diesel fuel leaking behind the left rear tire. I had them perform an inspection for $135 and they determined that fuel was leaking out of the left fuel level sender area with no visual damage. They recommended replacing left tank seal and inspecting tank and sensor for cracks for $368. Before having the work performed , I went on the internet and found others having the same problem with their mercedes with NHTSA action #pe12001. We had no fuel smell or any indications there was a leak. I feel this is a serious defect and Mercedes Benz should recall these vehicles before someone gets killed.

When I fill the gas tank of my 2003 mbz E320 there is always a strong smell of gas. Emitting from my vehicle.
The contact owns a 2004 Mercedes Benz e-320. The contact stated that the vehicle was leaking fuel from the top of the fuel tank, causing an overpowering gasoline odor inside the vehicle from the rear driver's side. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised that the top of the fuel tank was fractured and would need replacing. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered no assistance. There was an investigation under NHTSA item number: pe12-001 (fuel system) that could have been related to the failure. The failure and the current mileage was 35,000.
I filled the tank of our E320 cdi with diesel fuel at a local station and drove the short distance home and parked in my garage. Next morning I noticed a puddle of diesel fuel near right-rear tire. I drive the car normally to work (~5 miles) the next few days and noticed a puddle of diesel near right rear tire each time. Did a little on-line research and learned there is an issue with the fuel sender seal on w211 mb's, like mine. Scheduled an appointment with mb of grand blanc and they confrmed the diagnosis and replaced the seal under my extended warranty. If I were not under warranty, mb would have refused to pay, from what people with same problem are reporting on mb forums. This is ridiculous that such a problem would happen on a mb. Mine is a diesel, so a fire was unlikely, but this happens with gas versions as well and that is dangerous. Mb should be forced to do a recall.

I purchased a 2005 Mercedes Benz E320 which has been garaged and very lightly driven. (only on weekends or days off) after six months and refueling a few times I started to notice an odor of gas in the cabin of the vehicle. This odor has gotten worse and stronger over time. The odor is also noticeable in the garage as well as around the exterior of the car. This seems like an indication that more gas is present and possibly leaking somewhere near the gas tank. I am fearful of driving it as the concern over fire is present as my kids ride in the rear seat. I would appreciate someone looking into/investigating this to see if it is indeed a mercedes problem and possible recall prospect.
The fuel tank leaks when tank is filled above 3/4 . Gas pools under rear seat and leaks under car.
Gas tank is leaking fuel on the ground under the rear left floor in front of the rear left wheel. There was an NHTSA recall campaign for all e class models 2003 > 2009, which our car is part of. This is a well known and documented issue. However mercedes says the campaign does not include our diesel powered cdi bluetec model. We are afraid this is a safety issue . . . It has been going on for a long time and is getting worse and worse.
Car started reading srs airbag malfunction (still needs to be repaired) car is sometimes unable to read how much gas is in the vehicle. Car couldn't pass emissions. Check engine light on. The car smells of a strong gas odor. Unable to park the car in the garage because of the strong smell. Every time the tank is filled with gas the car presents a strong gas odor until it gets below half a tank. Mercedes wanted to charge me $4000. 00 to have it fix so I took my car to a foreign car repair shop who charge me $1,300. 00. Problem fixed, however I recently took my car to mercedes because my check engine light came back on so they charged me $2,100. 00 to fix that along with regular maintenance,.
One day I fill my tank with gas & when I get in my car I smell gasoline. I'm thinking I stepped in some gas at the gas station. I come home & park. As I exit my car & come around the passenger side I'm smelling gas. For the next few days the gas smell continues to suffocate me. I got on the internet & googled " I smell gas in my 2005 E320". I was shocked to see that lots of other people were having the same problem. The no-cost solution was not to fill your tank, only halfway but then your constantly stopping for gas smh. Why don't the dealers want to fix this problem?? is this the reputation that mercedes wants to create??.

Had to replace my gas tank twice due to smell of gas permeating the inside of the car. It is fine now but had to have it replaced twice to fix the problem.
When the gas tank is filled it results in a bad gas odor smell.
