Mercedes Benz E320 owners have reported 33 problems related to other fuel system tank filling/charging (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
When filling fuel tank very strong smell of gas inside of car and outside. When to mercedes dealership and explained the fault and they wanted $5000 to correct issue. Found out there was a safety recall on this issue, and they refused to expedite as they said it was for 15 years and that had expired. No recall notices had been sent to me or the previous owner. I have had car for 4 years, previos owner had it for 6. Contacted head office in atlanta still would not cover the issue.

Fuel smell coming from within cabin first noticed October 2018 told it was probably was charcoal filter not a big deal when filling tank with fuel it sometimes happens, and was recently noticed when tires where changed that fuel smell and looked like leakage of gas. Was told this was a known defect and as the second owner was never informed in any capacity. This is a safety concern which in my opinion if they knew, all owners should have been notified ASAP. I am not sure what I can do, or can be done, but this is certainly not acceptable if it is a known defect. This was noticed when vehicle was not moving. I want the american public to know, we may have others out their with the same problem not knowing this. What a shame for mercedes if they have not contacted people. I started reviewing what I could find on web sites, attached is a NHTSA document.
In 2015 we started to notice the smell of gasoline following filling the tank with gas. The smell of gasoline is so strong that we had to open our garage doors to vent the fumes. No gasoline was spilled during refueling. There is no visible gas leak on the garage floor. The vehicle is a 2005 mercedes-benz E320 with only 44,000 miles. After researching this problem we discovered numerous other owners of this model mercedes have experienced the same problem. Mercedes has no recall for this fuel fume defect and any repair is not within the original warranty period. Nhtsa action #ea13003 summary test & analysis by mercedes-benz shows no risks of fire or passenger safety. This is bs as fuel fumes within an enclosed area, such as a garage where a natural gas hot water tank exists, could cause a fire. Nhtsa needs to require mercedes-benz to recall the vehicles affected by this defect.

When filling up the gas tank I sell gas and odor fills up the garage. The smell usually goes aways when the car has been driven and gas tank is not full. This week I filled the gas the tank up and gas was leaking and could not park it in the garage.
Persistent smell of diesel in cabin after filling tank. Leak isolated to right side (passenger side) fuel sender cap under rear seats. Same as gasoline versions, this really happens in the cdi or diesel versions as well. The warranty extension/recall should apply to these cars as well!.

I have owned my 2003 E320 for over 10 years now, having purchased it as a certified used vehicle with approximately 19,000 miles. Everytime I park it in my garage after filling up the fuel tank, my garage smells of gasoline, eventhough there has never been a visible leak onto the garage floor. Recently after I refueled, the smell was no longer just outside the vehicle, but had now permeated into the cabin. These fumes have made it impossible to drive the car, because they are so overwhelming.
Strong gasoline smell inside cabin has grown progressively worse over past year. Now it is constant - not just when the tank is filled. Have never added more gas after the nozzle shutoff when refilling - never top off the tank. I did not receive a letter from mb in Jan 2015 as other have reported on internet. I have the car serviced exclusively at the mb dealership. The 2008 fuel recall was installed about 4 years ago.
There is a very strong gas order in and around my vehicle when I fill the gas tank. I have avoided filling my tank more then 3/4 full due to this order. This cannot be safe. I have never experienced anything like this with any other vehicle I have ever owned.

Tl-the contact owns a 2003 Mercedes Benz E320. The contact stated that after filling her gas tank, there was a gas smell coming inside. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 136,000. Ss.
For the past 2 years I have been smelling a strong gas smell coming from the car/garage after filling it up. I had been putting it off as no big deal, but today my whole house smelled like gas after I filled the tank last night and parked the car in the garage. We had to clear the house thinking we had some gas leak before I realized it was coming from the car. I have read that is is a common problem in this car and an investigation was started last year. This seems to be a very hazardous situation as I assume it could lead to a fire or explosion. I'm afraid to go to the dealer cause I know they will probably say to replace the tank or sensor or both, all which could lead into a several thousand dollar repair. But because I am seeing that many people are having this same problem with this car and an investigation is going on, there must be something I can do to get this fixed before something bad happens. This is clearly a manufacturer problem. Please help.
There is a very strong smell of gasoline fumes emanating from the automobile, especially outside the auto it seems from around the driver's side and rear of the car. It is there especially after filling the gas tank but continues even afterwards. The odor is very strong and there is obviously a problem.
Fuel smell outside of vehicle after filling the tank. Took to dealer in valencia CA. They tightened the fuel filler neck. The following week when we filled up, same issue. Responded via email to service manager that the problem was not corrected. Brought car back for service in Nov 2014. Dealer says car out of extended warranty 3 weeks. Cost: $2500. Offers 15% off service, this is a nice gesture and it is appreciated. However, the problem was identified (and not corrected) while the car was under warranty. Defect investigation underway at NHTSA and a class-action lawsuit filed in GA. We feel mb is responsible for th replacement of the fuel sending unit.

After filling up on gas just two days ago, there was a very peculiar smell. It smelled of gas fumes. Just today, I noticed that my gas gauge was going down quite fast and it wasn't until just now that my gas tank is leaking.

Very strong gasoline odor coming out of left rear wheel well after filling up the gas tank. The odor reduced as I drove for a few days. It seems like gasoline is leaking from the top of the fuel tank.
Constant problems with fumes/fuel leak?? the entire passenger compartment fills with strong fumes after filling gas tank or when near empty?? have had it checked for leaks multiple times without locating any leaks ongoing problem--at times its impossible to sit in the backseat of the car the fumes are so strong!!! and the garage is filled with the smell of gasoline yet no leak or spill anywhere???.
After filling fuel tank and parking car in garage, I noticed a strong fuel odor.
Experience strong smell of gasoline after filling tank. Smell diminishes when tank is less full but returns with next fuel fill up. Smell noticed both inside and outside vehicle exact date first occurred is unknown, but was first noticed years ago.
At some point after owning the vehicle, I noticed a strong gas smell coming from inside and outside my car. It was so strong that it permeated the rooms of my home closest to the garage where I park my car. I later realized the strong smell occurred after filling up my tank, and diminished significantly after the tank reached about half full. Since the fumes are greatest when my tank is more than half full, I live with filling it half way or less. When I happen to forget and fill the tank to capacity, I have to park the car outside my garage, and drive with the windows open. The fumes inside the car are unbearable, and I am concerned for my health and the health of my son. Several months ago, I asked a Mercedes Benz dealership if there was anything they could do. I never heard back. I called again a few days ago. I told them the issue, and asked what the possible problems could be, and what the approximate repair cost will be. I was told they've seen a couple of problems that cause the fuel smell: a leak in some part of the fuel system (can't remember exactly what); and, the gas tank itself. Depending on the cause, the repair could run anywhere from $600+ to $2500. Note: date of incident and vehicle mileage are approximations. I've been living with this awhile. I just can't remember how long.
After filling the tank at a gas station, I went home (5 miles) and parked the vehicle in the driveway. When went back out to driveway about15 minutes later noticed a bad gas smell around the vehicle. Smell was worst under left rear door. Looked under vehicle and could see smell gas in the tray below the gas tank. I pulled the tray down slightly and a few drop of gas dripped out. I could feel gas in the tray with my fingers. I think gas tank is leaking from top of tank. Glad I didn't park in the garage.
After filling fuel tank, fuel leaking from top of the fuel tank into panel under the rear seat.
The car has a strong gasoline smell both in the passenger compartment as well as outside the car after filling the gas tank. This smell persists for several days, until the tank gets to below 3/4 full, at which time the fuel smell goes away. The strong fuel smell returns when the tank is again refilled to full capacity. The seals around the fuel pump and sending unit at the top of the tank were replaced twice with factory mercedes-benz parts by a qualified mechanic, and this has not stopped the problem. There appears to be a leak in the gas tank or other fuel system comonent. The mechanic inspected the fuel sending unit and did not see any fuel leaks at that point, leaving me to suspect a leaking gas tank.
1. Fueling the vehicle- after fueling the vehicle and filling up the tank, a very very strong odor of gasoline/fumes stays in the cabin of the vehicle days or until gas tank drops down to under half a tank. 2. Fumes are so strong, causes occupants headaches and nausea 3. Vehicle stopped on idle- when coming to a complete stop, vehicle begins to choke, as if its about to turn off. Need to put the car on neutral and press the accelerator to stop the car from choking. 4. Turning- when making turns- the vehicle will randomly choke as if not receiving any gas, and as if its about to turn off. The power steering also goes inactive, leaving it almost impossible to make the turn. This is very dangerous especially on left hand turns at intersections. I have stopped turning in front of oncoming vehicles because I do not trust the vehicles response. I cannot predict when these episodes of non-response to acceleration will occur.
Strong gas odor after filling gas tank. While in for service on vehicle other than gas odor mechanic at dealership found gas on skid pan under car while on rack. He said tank or possible o ring may be at fault. This was September of 2012. At that time I decided not to pursue repairs due to financial restraints. This January of 2015 I received a warranty extension addendum stating " specifically, the warranty on the fuel tank, fuel filter/sender, fuel pump, and related gaskets ( collectively the "covered fuel tank components") for gasoline-fueled, non pzev certified model year 2003-2009 e class and 2006-2011cls- class vehicles will be extended from original 4 year/ 50,000 miles (whichever occurs first) to 15 years, regardless of mileage. " today I left my 2003 E320 for service to address the problem. Dealership called and said the fuel tank sending unit was leaking but is not covered under warranty extension addendum! as stated above the "fuel filter/sender" is covered under the addendum but dealer doesn't want to acknowledge the letter I received from mercedes-benz USA, llc. I understand a class action lawsuit has been filed against mercdes concerning this matter. Is there anything your agency can due so mercedes honors their addendum and not change the coverage once they have your car torn apart. I did show letter to service representative before I left the car. Thank you for you time.
After filling up fuel, but not topping off, there is a very strong odor of fuel in the cabin. After evaluation the fuel sending unit is leaking severely and the seal shows signs of leaking. Only 76,400 miles on a 2004 E320 dealer quoted $2500 for replacement of the sending unit, new seals and new fuel tank.
After filling the tank there is a strong smell of fuel inside the cabin and above the left rear wheel. The fuel vapors saturate the garage space and also enter the house environment. The fuel leaks from the top of the fuel tank at the fuel sending unit. There was approximately 200 cc of gasoline pooled in the plastic cover of the sending unit. This fuel evaporates through the cabin and ouside through the space of the rear left wheel. The car, my family, and my house is at the risk of fire and gasoline explosion. The mb authorized dealer declined to repair free of charge this serious manufacturer's defect because the vehicle is out of warranty. The repair cost is approximately $2400 which includes replacement of the entire fuel tank and the sending units.
We discovered that the car was leaking gas. We took it to the dealer who told us that the gas tank in this model had a problem and that it would be quite expensive to fix, approximately $2,000, he advised that this will likely only happen when we fill the tank and that we could prevent the problem by not filling the tank full. . . Which we have done since but it is a great inconvenience and it scares us to think that we are driving a car with a leaking gas tank. Recently we became aware that there are many, many more owners like us and and that there was a complaint process that we could use with the ntsb. . . . I am responding within 24 of hours of knowing this. The mercedes dealer was not forthcoming about this and did not fully advise us of the seriousness of the problem and we are very disappointed. We are now experiencing issues with the car in passing emissions testing in TN (where we now live). . . . Fl did not have an emissions testing policy. We have an estimate from a certified mercedes repair shop that it will cost almost $2,000 to fix this problem and we feel that it is a serious safety issue.
After filling the gas tank, I noticed a strong odor after I got home and got out of car. After further inspection I noticed puddle of gas on drivers side of car just in front of rear tire. This happens every time now when I fill up the gas tank. My short term resolution until this can be fixed is to not fill up gas tank all the way.
The car develops a very strong smell of gasoline after filling the gas tank. Other owners of mercedes e class vehicles have investigated where the smell is coming from and found that gasoline is pooling up under the rear seat on the fuel sender unit. When I went to my dealer, they told me that it in fact was the fuel sender unit that was causing the strong smell of gas inside my garage, and sometimes car. The fact that there are live wires near the pooling gas and the fact that the smell of gasoline is so strong leads me to believe that this is a safety issue that mercedes needs to address right away. I have kids that are in the car 3 times a day and I do not feel comfortable with them in the car.
Every time the car is filled up with gas, there is a very strong gas smell inside and outside of the vehicle. Removed the back seat and the plate that covers the fuel sending unit and gas puddles up around the seal of the sending unit. Had seal replaced, but that only helped for about a month. It only does this when tank is full (probably due to the pressure in the tank). This problem seems to be getting worse and I try to avoid filling tank completely, but sometimes it's hard to tell when it's getting close to full. The problem only seems to occur on the driver's side of the car, even though there is also a sending unit on the passenger side.
The contact owns a 2003 Mercedes Benz E320. The contact stated that after filling the fuel tank, he would smelled fuel outside of the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 80,000.
In 2009 we started to notice the smell of gasoline coming into the passenger compartment and strongly from the left read wheel well following filling the tank with gas. At times the smell of gasoline would be so strong that the vehicle had to be parked outside of the garage and left open to vent the interior. In all, this vehicle has been serviced for this issue with the fuel sending seals or the fuel sending unit 9 times. All instances, save one, were reported by the dealer to be the seals as the culprit. I have all of my service documentation on these service events. Recently, as a result of a "check engine" light, my mechanic found again that the seal was leaking. On this occasion he reported fuel pooled on the top of the tank and evidence that fuel had been spilling around and down the tank.
On several occasions between 2005 and 2015, I smelled gas inside of my car after filling the tank. Gas soaked my back seat and carpet behind driver's seat, and leaked out the right (driver's) side of the car. When I took into the mercedes dealer in sugar land on April 9, 2008, they were unable to diagnose the problem. After then, I avoided filling up the tank. On December 12, 2012, I filled the tank by accident and the fuel soaked by back seat and leaked out the right side of the car. I took it to an auto repair shop, and the fuel pump seal was replace. Then on July 1, 2014, the fuel pump went out and had to be replaced along with the fuel pump relay.
After filling the gas tank to full there are gas fumes in the air around the car. Therefore we do not fill to full. We just saw news article about fuel tank problems with mb.
