Pzev fuel tank leaks at top but is not repairable. Replacement requires complete tank replacment which is not economically feasilble. This forces owners to continue to operate vehicle with fuel leakage since repair of the tank is not possible. In older models a simple gasket change would resolve such leaks, in the pzev tank leaks can not be repaired and thus are left uncorrected. Many of these vehicles are now owned by minority owners who are unable to pay $5000 to repair a defective design. Mb refuses to support owners.
I recently started smelling gas in my car after refueling. I was told by my mechanic that mercedes was replacing fuel pumps and fuel tanks free of charge . Mercedes benz customer care has advised this isn't so. This is an expensive repair and I am hoping Mercedes Benz can cover the cost of this repair and if not, offer substantial assistance.
In June 2017, I received a letter from mercedes-benz of America informing me that the warranty of the fuel system in my vehicle is extended to 15 years. In that same year, I had my whole fuel tank replaced by an authorized Mercedes Benz dealer in san jose, California due to strong smell of fuel by the rear wheel well on the driver side of the car. The repair was fully cover by mb-America under this extended warranty. On November 3, 2022, I experienced the same fuel smell from the same place of the car (I. E. , driver side rear wheel well) and was told that the repair will not be cover at all, even though the fuel system in my car is only 5 years old. I am writing to suggest that you impose a 15 years warranty on the fuel leak replacement parts. Mb needs to stand behind their product if it was their oem parts and done by their authorized dealer. In my case the new fuel smell was due to a cracked fuel pump assembly (part # 211 470 60 94) which was found in the brand new fuel tank installed in my car in 2017. My car is now repaired at a local shop at a fraction of the cost that mb-san jose would have charged me. My hope is for you to help future similar customers who will experience similar issue avoiding this unjust expense. Thank you very much, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Noticed strong gasoline odor in left rear wheel well after filling the vehicle with fuel. Since the vehicle had just been repaired for an unrelated issue at a local mercedes dealer, I took it back to them for troubleshooting. They diagnosed the problem as a leak at the seal on the fuel pump in the tank. I researched this issue and found it is a recurring problem for which mercedes had offered a warranty extension of 15 years. This extension expired for my vehicle in July 2020. Cost to repair was $3,256 as after a 10% discount. I was not informed of this issue or the extended warranty despite having the vehicle serviced at mercedes dealers multiple times since purchasing it in 2008.

Leaking fuel tank and gaskets. A strong smell of fuel internally in the vehicle and externally with a full tank of fuel. Mercedes benz warrantee extension pe#12001 "covered fuel tank components. The passenger compartment has a very strong smell of gasoline to the point of feeling dizzy in my 10 minute commute to and from work. This started a few months ago and has gotten progressively worse by the week. What appears to be a gasoline leak has gotten so bad that now even the outside of the car smells like gasoline. I've had to resort to driving with the windows open and parking my car outside the garage for fear of either passing out when driving or creating a fire hazard in my garage.

I was first owner of this benz 2006 E350. It was never involved in any accident. I typically parked the car outside garage. However, after I moved the car inside my garage a few days ago, I smelled gas. So I lifted up 2nd row seat, uncovered the covering-piece on driver's side, I saw fuel delivery system with two connectors, one for sensor and one for power supply. I saw the area around power connector is wet. It smells gas. Obviously, the gas leak was from the top of fuel delivery system (or top of the fuel filter housing). I'm glad I did this investigation tonight. I plan to see a benz dealer tomorrow in laguna niguel, CA, where the dealer told me it is not covered under warranty, even after I hold him that my E350 is under benz 2006 - pzev 15 years or 150,000 mi emission related warranty.
The contact owns a 2006 Mercedes Benz E350. Upon refueling the vehicle, there was a strong smell of fuel outside and inside the vehicle. When the vehicle was parked, the strong fumes were extreme. The vehicle was taken to the authorized dealer, who diagnosed that the fuel sending unit was leaking and needed to be replaced. The dealer was not able to determine the location or the source of the leak. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
There is a serious safety issue with 2006 mercedes-benz e class (mbec) because of a manufacturer's and/or design defect which causes this vehicle to not go into proper gear and/or stall suddenly putting the public at risk. I barely escaped being smashed into by oncoming traffic while making a routine left hand turn into a gas station because my mbec was stuck in gear and did not accelerate as it was manufactured and designed to do but rather sputtered at less than 5 miles per hour (mph). The only reason I was not t-boned and likely seriously injured along with other people was because the other drivers swerved into oncoming traffic causing those drivers to also swerve. Miraculously no one was injured, this time. Also, the reason why I was turning into the gas station was because I was forced to get off the highway because my mbec would not change gear after I got on the highway and was approaching red-lining at and it seemed like the engine might blow. The tiptronic also failed during this malfunction. I had the authorized mb dealer that I have used since I purchased my mbec pickup my vehicle to look into this issue and my advisor told me I needed a new balance shaft because the one in my vehicle had prematurely worn (even though I have always stringently followed my mb advisor's suggestions) and it would cost roughly $6,500. S/he also said this occurs in roughly 15-20% of '06 mbec. But mb would not fix this safety defect unless I paid. Worse yet, my advisor never made me aware of this serious safety issue even though s/he previously knew or should have known and as a result put the public at risk by not enabling me to resolve this serious safety issue with my model year vehicle until the occurrence of a near catastrophe. There should be a safety recall now that this safety defect has come to light and unless there is, the public will remain at serious risk.

Very strong gasoline odor inside and outside automobile, strongest after refueling.
Began to notice a significant fuel smell outside the rear tire on the driver's side of the vehicle. It is so strong that when it is enclosed in the garage, we are afraid a pilot light could ignite a fire.
After getting out of my vehicle, I noticed a strong smell of fuel coming from the rear bottom of my vehicle. There is a large leak somewhere in the fuel system. This now occurs every time I get near the vehicle but is strongest after the vehicle has been driven. It now also smells like fuel in the vehicle once the vehicle is stopped. It is not so noticeable when driving and the ac is on. The smell is so strong that I think it would ignite if somebody walks by with a cigarette. The car is now parked until I am able to fix it. Too dangerous to drive.
Strong fuel smell in inside (and outside) particularly after filling it up with gas. Find gasoline on top of fuel sending unit.

Fuel smell in rear inside (and outside) particularly after filling it up with gas.
Gas odor from left rear side. And inside the car. No visible leak. Car runs fine. When the dealer was contacted, they were aware of the issue of the gas leak from fuel/pump/filter or sending unit but would not fix it at mercedes expense.
Fuel leaks and strong odor of gasoline both inside and outside of their vehicle particularly after refueling.
Fuel leaks and a strong odor of gasoline both inside and outside of vehicle, particularly after refueling.
I filled up the car and drove home you can smell gas outside at the gas station like it was leaking somewhere, but when I got home the smell was so loud that I was afraid to park it in the garage. Not only the smell was bad, but I can't tell if it is filled all the way or not because the gas gauge doesn't go to the top, it is about 3 notches from full, but all the gas pump it stops that it is full. I went online, and it stated that it was a recall for E350 and others for the fuel filters that leak and may cause a fire, but it is for 2011 & 2012. It should be for all Mercedes Benz because this same problem is happening for older car as well.
Strong gas smell in and around the car. Especially when freshly refueled. At the Mercedes Benz dealership both of the fuel sensors were found to be leaking. I was advised to not drive the car one more mile and get repairs done instantly.
