1 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2019

My 2006 Mercedes Benz E350 has a strong odor of gasoline, particularly strong after filling the tank. My understanding is that there was a NHTSA investigation into this problem in the past and the manufacturer agreed to extend the warranty to repair the problem which resulted in NHTSA closing the probe. I contacted my local dealership regarding this problem and they indicated that the warranty is not extended. This implies that the manufacturer is not complying with their agreement or the probe should be reopened?.

2 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2017

My vehicle has only 19500 original miles which I bought from my aunt who didn't drive the car that much because of gas smell inside especially after filling up gas full tank which I also encountered that makes me worry that might cause combustion or fire. I search the internet and most the mb e-class owners have the same problem which is I think the most important to recall because it is dangerous to drive that possibly can cause fire or will lost lives. I have 3 kids with me driving and picking them up at school and it really worries me. Nhtsa please make an investigation on this regard ASAP. Thank you and more power.

3 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2016

I purchased this car two months ago from auto dealer who gave me copy of car fax report. No problems were indicated. After filling car up with gas (not topping it off) there is an extremely strong smell of gas inside and especially outside the back of the car. The smell goes away after the gas tank reaches 3/4 full. I recently found out that the previous car owner had the car serviced at the mercedez benz dealership 6 months prior to my purchase. The dealership told the owner that the fuel system was leaking but the previous owner refused to have it repaired. This was not noted in the car fax report - only that there were no service issues. I requested that the fuel system be repaired under the 15 year extended warranty but mercedez benz says that the car is not covered under the extension.

4 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2015

After filling car up with gas (not topping it off) the inside of the car smells like gas. The smell goes away after the gas tank is 3/4 full.

5 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2015

Strong odor of gasoline fuel inside and outside of my vehicle, particularly after refilling the fuel tank. The odor subsided after driving my car for some distance thereby lowering the fuel level in the tank. I tell my daughter to fill the tank to about 3/4 full to avoid the odor. The odor is very strong when we park the vehicle in our garage and thanks be to god that we don't smoke. We park the car outside the garage when my daughter come home. Someone told me that there was a recall on fuel filter/sender, cracks in the pressurized outlet fitting of the fuel filter/sender. Will you please let me know about this situation as soon as you can.

6 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 02/16/2015

Strong odor of gasoline fuel inside and outside of the vehicle after refilling the tank. Odor went away after driving some distance thereby lowering the fuel level in the tank. M-b of tampa and mb of USA refused to make warranty repair fuel leakage problem due my pzev vehicle (with option 917) was sold in florida (not in 10 states which have "0 emission requirements"). As per summary of o. D. I. "in letter dated September 4, 2014, mercedes has notified agency (odi nhts) that it will extend the original warranty coverage to 15 years and unlimited mileage on "covered fuel tank components" in e-class vehicles in my 2003-2009 and cls-class vehicles in my 2006-2011. " looks-like mercedes dropped out of the general list of the my 2003 through 2009 e-class all pzev vehicles (with option 917) manufactured for sale or lease in the united states, but sold to customers by m-b official dealers in the states, which do not have "0-emission" requirements.

7 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2014

Gas fumes and gas leak after filling tank. Dealer states car needs a new fuel tank, fuel line and sensors and estimates repairs of $2700. 00.

8 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2014

After filling fuel tank and parking car in garage, a strong gasoline smell filled the garage and house. Had to remove car from garage. This happens if I fill the tank. I do not overfill. If I don't fill the tank I don't have this problem. After driving the car around 50 miles the smell goes away.

9 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2014

A fuel tank leak was identified by an independent mercedes mechanic. Filling up the car with fuel and parking in garage overnight, always produced a significant gas odor when returning to the garage. It has always done this (second owner at about 25-30kk miles), and I assumed it was just a quirk of filling the tank. I have always serviced the car at a mb dealer, but recently want to a local well recommended independent mechanic for another issue and he asked me if I knew I had a fuel leak. I said no, and he said do you ever smell gas, and clearly this was identified and had stored codes in the car system that I was unaware of. He indicated that the sending unit needed to be replaced and crack repaired and it was a safety issue. I called mb USA, and they indicated they were unaware of any of other complaints to this nature. When I questioned why the dealer would never have identified this, they indicated that they would never instruct their dealers in any way regarding an issue like this and the dealer has no incentive to not identify the issue and I should discuss with them. I proceeded to have the repair done by the independent mechanic. I understand that fuel would pool over the gas tank from the leak.

10 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2014

After filling car with gas there is a strong gasoline smell coming from the car. Goes away after driving and some of the gas is used out of the tank. Cannot find any gas leaking on the ground around the vehicle and I do not 'top off' the tank. I am no longer parking the car in the garage as I am concerned about an explosion as there is a gas water heater in the garage. Somewhere in the system this gas is leaking. . . . And it's not coming out on the ground!!! scary.

11 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2014

The car was smelling like gasoline inside and outside especially after filling up the full tank. When I lifted the the back seat and opened the cover where the fuel pump is there was a gasoline everywhere overflowing the fuel pump. There were also marks of gasoline on the bottom of the car (left rear side), on the plastic and parts of the exahaust system. This is a health concern for all passengers breathing the air filled with gasoline fumes and also a fire hazard in case the gasoline leaking outside the tank gets in contact with a spark on the road. I took the car to the Mercedes Benz dealership and they said it would cost me $3,800 to fix the problem. They would change the fuel pump and the entire tank. I tried calling the corporate to let them know that I have read other similar complaints and that this is a safety issue but they refused to help and said its due to the age of the car.

12 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2014

I have a strong smell of gas after filling up tank. Noticed very strong when sitting in garage overnight.

13 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2014

Noticed strong fuel smell in cabin after filling tank - took car to dealer and was quoted over $700 to replace fuel level sender and seals. Problem causes unsafe level of flammable and toxic gasoline vapor to build up in car due to evaporation of pool of leaked fuel on top of tank (located under rear seat). Appears to be common on '03 to '09 w211 body style, but mb offers no help unless car was sold in states requiring pzev certification.

14 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2014

After I fill my gas tank there a strong odor of gasoline both inside and outside of the vehicle, particularly after refueling. Possible problem could be the fuel pump and fuel filter along with the gas tank. The odor is so severe we had to park our car outside the garage after filling. The time we didn't it caused severe illness (nausea) to my wife.

15 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2014

After filling fuel tank, strong gasoline smell inside cabin of car, local dealer said fuel pump and sender need replacing and maybe fuel tank if pump replacement does not solve problem. Fuel is leaking and pooling on top of fuel pump access panel just underneath rear seat. This sounds like a dangerous situation. Any reasonable person would not consider this normal wear and tear of moving parts and, in my opinion should be worthy of a recall.

16 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2014

I recently bought a 2006 Mercedes Benz E350 with 84000+ miles on it, in very good condition. Upon filling my gas tank for the second time, and returning home for the night, I parked in my garage and went about my business. The next morning I noticed a strong smell of gasoline around the car. I pulled the rear seat off, and discovered that there was a small pool of gasoline in the area of the fuel sending unit. Apparently this is not uncommon, and the NHTSA has already initiated an investigation (NHTSA action# pe12001). As far as I know, this car was serviced regularly by the previous owner and was never in an accident. I have no reason to believe that this isn't the sending unit that came with the car originally.

17 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2014

Strong gas smell after filling the tank. The whole garage smells like gas. Dealer said they are unaware of such issue and no recall for this issue. I'm surprised because I read a lot about these issues online. It should be addressed ASAP because it can trigger fire or explosion.

18 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2013

There is an extremely strong gasoline smell in the cabin and exterior of my vehicle. It is very strong smell immediately after filling the fuel tank, but continues to smell throughout the levels in the tank. I am very afraid of a possible fire due to the what seems to be excess gasoline. I am extremely fearful should I ever get involved in a rear end type accident. I feel that myself and my family are in danger until this situation is evaluated. This is a known condition that the manufacturer should take responsibility for and rectify the situation.

19 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2013

Strong smell of gasoline occurs after filling the fuel tank. This persists until the car is driven approximately 50 miles. Dealer suggests that this may be a result of fuel tank leaks or bad senders and is quoting as much as $3000 for replacement of the fuel tank.

20 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

After filling fuel tank, noticed strong fuel odor on drivers side of car. Opened fuel sending unit access panel under rear seat and noticed fuel pooled on top of the sending unit. The fuel odor dissipates as fuel is consumed. However, the odor returns on each full tank fill. Summary: gasoline is leaking from the fuel tank under the rear seat behind the driver.

21 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2013

After filling up the vehicle there is a very strong fuel smell both in the cabin and the trunk. The smell goes away after the fuel level is reduced as a result of driving. However, as every time the tank is filled up (never top the fuel tank) there is a very strong smell. This has caused me being light headed and sick after about 10-15 minutes of driving. Fuel is a carcinogen and very dangerous to human health.

22 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2013

After refilling gas tank, there is strong odor of gasoline, this usually disappears as the gas is consumed, but it it present as long as the tank is above 3/4 full. This has been a constant occurrence since purchasing the vehicle from mb of austin in 2009.

23 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

After filling car there is a strong odor of gasoline around the car. The smell continues until the tank is down to @3/4 . After reaching this point the smell dissipates somewhat but is still detectable. The garage reeks of fuel but there is nothing on the floor(yet). This problem started at @38,000 miles and continues. We now have @44,000 miles on the car. We tried contacting mercedes USA but they merely told us to contact a local dealership. The dealership we contacted and relayed our problem to (chantilly virginia)claimed there was no known fuel system/tank problem with that model(2006 E350). They would, of course, love to check it out. Research shows that the common fix for this problem(if it works)is around $2,000.

24 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

I own a 2006 mercedes e-series with 47,000 miles. I have noticed a fuel smell when the car is in the garage after refilling the tank. The problem was recently diagnosed as a faulty fuel tan seal. The dealer has indicated this is a dangerous condition and the car should not be driven. The estimated repair cost is over $600. In researching this on the internet I find this is a common dangerous problem but there has not been a recall. I also find that in instances where the seal has been replaced, the problem reoccurs a short time later and it is related to the entire mechanism, not just the seal. I feel this issue should be addressed by mercedes and plan to report this to the NHTSA. Please advise.

25 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2012

Reference NHTSA action number: pe12001. Smell fuel after filling tank. Smell noticeable outside car. Smell would go away when fuel level drops. 6/22/12, during normal maintenance visit at dealer, I mentioned fuel smell. They found fuel smell coming from a leaking fuel pump o-ring seal. They replaced the o-ring on the top of the fuel tank. I filled the tank 5 days later. Smelled fuel again. I removed the back seat and opened the fuel pump access port. The well around the fuel pump housing was full of fuel. 7/5/12, returned car to dealer. They said that the tank was "warped" and needed to be replaced. The leak seems to have stopped, but fuel had leaked onto the insulation under the back seat. The interior of the car now reeks of gasoline, almost to the point of not being able to drive due to smell.

26 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2012

After filling car with gas there is a gasoline smell. Odor so strong cannot leave car in garage until gas dips below approximately 3/4 tank.

27 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2011

I needed to replace my gasoline tank in my mendez benz when the smell from gasoline fumes became overwhelming. I had the smell, especially after I filled up the tank for several years and was always told that nothing was wrong and that a gasoline smell after filling up is normal. When I took in the car because I could not drive it any longer because of the severe smell, I was told that my gas tank had a leak and needed to be replaced. I was also told this was very unusual. The gas tank has been replaced and I have had no gasoline smell since then.

28 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2008

Fuel leaking from the passenger side above back tire after filling fuel tank. The issue started back in July 2008 and has progressively been getting worse.
