3 Engine Stall problem of the 2008 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 05/11/2014

I was driving on highway route 22 at approximately 60 mph, when suddenly the throttle stopped responding and the tachometer started dropping. In a matter of seconds the tachometer reached zero and the vehicle stalled, while I was in traffic on the highway. I coasted off to the shoulder and put the vehicle in park. When I tried to restart the vehicle, the engine would turn over and start up, however, immediately after I let go of the key, the tachometer would drift back down to zero and the vehicle would stall. After a few more failed attempts, I called for a tow. Since this occurred after hours, no one was available to work on the vehicle until the next morning. In the morning when I attempted to show the technician the failure, the vehicle started up as it did the evening before, then the tachometer started dipping back down, then just before it stalled, the tachometer fluttered a little, then the engine revved back up and began idling normally. The technician indicated that there were no events logged in the vehicles computer to give him an idea of what caused the sudden stalling, and he could not find any obvious issues with the vehicle. The vehicle was returned to me without repair and the technician warned me that it is likely that this would happen again and that they cannot diagnose it unless they see it when it is not working. Now I am concerned that this will happen again while driving and that it will cause an accident, or worse. I read an article from the north carolina consumers council stating that there is a known issue with the throttle body of this vehicle that causes sudden engine stall while driving. Ford issued an extended warranty on certain vehicles for this piece, however when I contacted the dealership and mentioned consumer satisfaction program 13n03, they informed me that my vehicle did not qualify. I'm not sure what to do next.

4 Engine Stall problem of the 2010 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 07/21/2013

I have no throttle response, engine rpm drop back to an idle, engine runs rough and stalls. No power. Moving to the side of the road, turn engine off and restart and will runs fine, but today this problem reoccurred every 4 miles. I was only 22 miles from home but that is a lot of stopping along side of the road.

5 Engine Stall problem of the 2011 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 07/13/2013

The vehicle has quit running suddenly without warning at highway speed two times and has quit running at low speed or at stop lights or has went to rough idle in limp home mode with no power available to avoid heavy traffic. Turning off ignition and waiting 3 minutes and restarting yields normal engine operation until it stalls again. Ford service has diagnosed defective throttle body but will not warranty the defective part even though it is covered under emissions controls.

6 Engine Stall problem of the 2009 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 05/31/2013

2009 Mercury Mariner engine stalls, surges then no acceleration. Coast to side of road, while trying to not get rear-ended. Engine still runs, is extremely rough. After turning the ignition off, then wait and restart, runs okay. This has happened on many occassions in past month and half. I contacted Ford dealer and service guy says it is most likely the throttle body starting @ $500 repair not covered under the warranty. Happens at any speed. From start or just while driving. First incident 5-31-2013.

7 Engine Stall problem of the 2010 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 09/28/2012

Engine stalled while driving at highway speed, started surging, running very rough and would not go any faster than about 15 mph. The vehicle was stopped and shut off. After a few minutes the vehicle was started and seemed to run normally. The vehicle ran normally until 10/05/2012 when it stalled and ran very rough again. At this time the vehicle was being driven to the local dealer for a check. While waiting for a call back from the dealer the vehicle was restarted and seem to run normally again. After talking to the service mgr. , it was learned that the problem most likely was the throttle body and it would not be under warranty. At this time it was decided to take the vehicle to a local shop that we were very pleased with for past service for other vehicles within our family. The local shop ordered and installed a new throttle body and the vehicle has performed normally.

8 Engine Stall problem of the 2009 Mercury Mariner

Failure Date: 06/18/2012

When being aggressive with the accelerator the engine stalls and the accelerator stops working forcing the driver to pull off of the road. When bring the car to a stop it jerks forward until it is put into park, still the accelerator does not work no matter how pushed. After turning it off start up takes longer than usual and either the little wrench or the engine symbol appears. After taking it to a mechanic it is diagnosed that is has a bad electronic throttle and it will have to be replace. Prior to this there has not had an accident, instance or work done that would cause this.
