I have 2004 Mercury Monterey. About 2 years ago my transmission failed at 67k and had to replace out of my pocket. Now there started another big issue in this car. Lately I park the van outside in the driveway. This happened several occasions since it started (especially in rainy days). I could start the car, but can not shift the vehicle into either forward or reverse. All kind of warning lights popup in this situation. Sometimes vehicle move few yards and then stall. Sometimes radio does not work. Then all of sudden when the day is sunny, van drives perfectly normal with no issues. This is extremely frustrated, I thought I purchased a good vehicle from the Ford, but not anymore!! I consulted my local mechanic and he thinks somehow computer get wet and that cause the problem. Some days it drives 10-20 miles in highway and the problem start again with a sudden power loss. This is extremely dangerous in driving with south florida traffic. How come rain water seep into the computer? this is no doubt that this issue must be due to poor design by the car manufacturer. Nhtsa should investigate this seriously since vehicle owners do not have any resolution due to bad design issue.
The contact owns a 2004 Mercury Monterey. The contact was driving 65 mph when the rpms increased and the vehicle began to decelerate independently without warning. The vehicle was towed to an auto shop where the mechanic inspected the vehicle and informed the contact that the transmission failed and would need replacing. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 90,000.
Accelerating away from traffic signal, vehicle accelerated normally up to 20-25mph and then transmission total failure. No warning, no symptoms.
2004 Mercury Monterey transmission failed at 69,000 miles with minor wear and tear. We have had the vehicle for 5 years and 4 months and vehicle had 16,000 miles when we purchased it. Transmissions are to last longer than 69,000 miles. That breaks down less than 900 miles per month which is well below the national average. In fact to further prove the point for 2 of the 5 years is was our sole vehicle for a family of 7 with 2 working adults. We contacted Ford but we were "within our miles of the extended warranty but unfortunately the time expiration was September of 2010". We paid $1800 to have it replaced yesterday however it broke down again yesterday and we are waiting to hear from the shop again now. If anyone google's 2004 Mercury Monterey transmission issues there is a plethora of results including class action lawsuits.
The contact owns a 2004 Mercury Monterey. The contact was driving approximately 40-45 mph when the transmission exhibited severe hesitation and would not respond normally. The contact was able to maneuver to a safe location where the transmission completely failed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where they informed the contact that the transmission would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
Transmission failure in 2004 Mercury Monterey van. No warning of the impending failure. No response from the transmission in any gear. It occured while on an entrance ramp to a major highway. Towed to Ford dealer where it was determined that "transmission failure" had occured. Ford rebuillt transmission installed at a cost of $3,455. I am concerned that this transmission can fail again when five kids are being transported to school in this van on that same highway during rush hour.
I purchased a used 2005 Mercury Monterey on January 22nd 2011. During test drive it felt great. Two days later I am feeling a jerking when taking off from a dead stop. I starting checing on line to see if there are problems with this vehicle. I was shocked to find over two hundred complaints of transmission failure! why is it with so many similar incidents or problems that no one is doing anything about it?.

Sudden (and silent) automatic transmission failure on 2004 Mercury Monterey with 59876 miles. Stopped at a signal light, proceeded on green light and accelerated to 30 mph, no problems, normal acceleration. Proceeded 500 feet and stopped at rail road crossing. Van lost motive power and stopped. The engine revved but van did not move. No warning, no lights,no sound, van will not move. Blocked railroad crossing, pushed van to the side of the road and then got vehicle towed home. All maintenance performed at Mercury recommended mileage and time. Lost two transmissions on 2002 chevy venture, and bought the van based on Ford/Mercury reputation.
Driving down the highway at a speed of 55 mph when my transmission just failed. I had no gears (forward or reverse) and had the van towed to the repair shop. The vehicle is a 2005 Mercury Monterey with about 81,000 miles.
Transmission failure of our 2005 Mercury Monterey Mini-van with only 66,000 miles on it left my wife and kids stranded on a dirt road in the country far from the city. We got the van fixed and the new transmission went out again 8000 miles later. Ford needs to recall these transmissions before someone gets hurt.
We have a 2005 Mercury Monterey van. I have read numerous reports regarding transmission failures in which the us government has failed to react to. It happened to my wife and I on Sunday, June 21, 2010 at approximately 9pm while traveling on a busy 4 lane road. We were proceeding home and the transmission completely dis-engaged leaving us powerless in the left lane of the road. Fortunately we were able to avoid traffic and safely get the vehicle off the road. What I don't understand is the neglect associated with this defect as I have read numerous reports of families put in harm's way with the associated transmission problems that the NHTSA and Ford are aware of. Have eyes been turned because this is an american company? you guys jumped all over Toyota for problems. I expect an answer!.
I have a 2004 Mercury Monterey (well maintain, 65k). Last Friday (April 2, 2010), I was driving in florida turnpike with heavy traffic and all of sudden without any warning (alarm or light) loss motive power. My whole family w/ kids was in the vehicle and I just thank! god, that we were not hurt. I immediately pulled into a roadside. I tried but wasn't able to put to any gear, heard bird chirping sound from the engine. After stranded in the middle of freeway during heavy traffic for more than 3 hours, I had it towed to my mechanic almost 73miles and had to pay $300 towing fee to bring the vehicle to the mechanic. My mechanics initial investigation found that transmission is gone and need to replace it. After searching the web, I found very similar issues for the Ford freestar (which is identical to Monterey). Ford /Mercury should recall these vehicles to fix this transmission failure problem and not to put loyal Ford customer in a dangerous position in a highway.
2005 Mercury Monterey transmission failure.
The contact owns a 2004 Mercury Monterey. The contact applied the brakes at speeds of 30 mph. She then attempted to regain speed but the vehicle would not accelerate. The vehicle was towed to her residence and then to an independent mechanic. The mechanic stated that the transmission had failed and would need to be replaced. The failure and current mileages were approximately 51,000.
Transmission failed at highway speed. Vehicle had no indication that there was a problem. I was driving in us highway 83 when vehicle suddenly shifted from drive to neutral. Vehicle slowed to a stop.
The contact owns a 2004 Mercury Monterey. The contact stated that while driving 70 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact was unable to restart the engine and the rpms increased. The vehicle was towed to the dealer to have a diagnostic performed. The contact also stated that the transmission was replaced twice however, the failure was not corrected. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 100,000. Updated 9/4/13 the consumer stated the transmission failed four times.
I have a 2004 Mercury Monterey the automatic transmission failed while in heavy traffic and poor weather conditions I feel lucky to not have been struck by another vehicle.
I was driving apx. 40 mph when the rpm gauge vamped up high then back down then the vehicle lost all power. Was able to coast to shoulder of road. We have had no past issue/symptoms what so ever. Myself and my four children were left on the side of the road waiting for help on a very cold day. Once the vehicle was towed, to a repair shop, the diagnosis: internal transmission failure, also mentioned was shaft broke inside transmission, the radiator would have to be replaced due to metal shavings, the transmission cooler/combo will have to be replaced and lines flushed. The repair cost: $3,363. 43. Nothing has been done to correct/fix this issue because we don't have $3,363. 43 to correct/fix this issue. No icons/warning lights, no messages on my dash message board. No warning!.
2005 Mercury Monterey transmission. As noted in other posts, my wife was traveling to work at 6:15 in the morning (dark), heard a strange sound and immediately the cars systems all stopped and she struggled to get it to the side of the road. Aaa towed the car to a well known a reputable repair service and they were able to very quickly diagnose a complete transmission failure. Estimated cost of the repair was $2500-3000. Dealer cost before discounts was $3795 down to $2217. Dealer, fiesta Lincoln Mercury in mesa, az. Refuses to acknowledge that this is a known serious issue. Mileage on the vehicle is 40,292. As is so with many others, I am in no position to lay out that kind of money, so vehicle is sitting in our driveway. I understand that investigations like this can take some time, but we are dealing not only with a significant repair issue and a safety issue. I find it amazing that no one has been hurt or killed when their vehicle fails in the middle of a freeway.
The contact owns a 2005 Mercury Monterey and while drivign 60 mph the transmission failed. The failure only happened once. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for repair. The failure miles were 74382 and 75301 are the current miles.
Sudden complete transmission failure.
With 54k miles on vehicle, and no previous problems, the transmission completely failed while driving, with the car having to coast to the side. It has required a transmission replacement. It is a 2004 Mercury Monterey, and it appears that many Ford/Mercury owners have had this same problem. It's bad enough that it fails, but I was thankful we weren't on the freeway when it happened, just a city street.
While driving way back home from work the transmission failed all of sudden causing me stranded on the middle of highway during heavy rush traffic hours. End up spending $175. 00 for towing and when called the next day to Ford dealer and Mercury dealership was approximately $3500. 00 to $4500. 00. Repaired the transmission from other transmission shop spending $2500. 00.
Transmission failure. Car suddenly went into neutral, almost causing me to be hit from behind by passing vehicles. Googling the problem shows many other consumers with Montereys and freestars (twin of the Monterey) with the same problem.
2004 Mercury Monterey, 78k, spouse pulls up to entrance of our church and drops off my daughter. Engine still running, she puts in it park until my daughter comes back out. 2 minutes later, with my daughter in tow, she puts in back into drive and the van goes nowhere. Engine running, but auto transmission totally fails with absolutely no warning or trigger. Trans fluid is full. Car won't go reverse or forward. I feel this is a very dangerous situation - transmission fails while car still running!.
The contact owns a 2004 Mercury Monterey. The vehicle was purchased four months ago and is currently experiencing transmission issues. While shifting from park into drive, the vehicle hesitated and jerked. The dealer stated that the transmission failed and clutch debris was found in the transmission fluid. A technician inspected the vehicle and found a seal that was allowing water to enter into the computer, which caused the computer and transmission to both fail. The vehicle will not yet be repaired. The failure mileage was 65,000 and current mileage was 69,000.
Transmission failure. Transmission refused to engage while in traffic. Parked vehicle. Have not repaired yet. This is a Mercury Monterey with only 38,500 miles. I have already replaced the power window motor on drivers side. There are many owners complaining about this same problem. Ford should recall or fix for free.
Full transmission failure coast to stop on major highway no notice warning or lights.
2005 Mercury Monterey, transmission sudden failure while wife was driving the vehicle. The vehicle has 34,000 miles on it. Ford refused any repairs citing it was 8 months out of warranty. It would appear this is a very common problem for Ford and they have chosen to not address it for their customers. This does seem to be a significant safety risk although we were fortunate to be able to steer the vehicle into a safe place and then have it towed.
The contact owns a 2004 Mercury Monterey. The contact experienced transmission failure while driving 5 mph. The failure caused the vehicle to stop in the middle of the intersection. There were no warning lights illuminated before or after the failure. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a diagnostic, but the results indicated that the transmission was fine. The failure and current mileages were 78,000.
Transmission failure of 2004 Mercury montery at highway speed. Van suddenly lost acceleration. Transmission spline was defective and transmission was replaced.
My family owns a 2004 Mercury Monterey. While driving through mountainous highway conditions, our transmission failed. Even though the dash has warning lights, there was no warning when we lost all motive power at highway speeds. We were fortunate to make it to the side of the road without being run down by the numerous semi trucks that were close on our tail pipe going up a hill. We were more than 100 miles from home, so decided to get the repairs done in the nearest large city. We were told the transmission was useless and we needed to replace it or have it rebuilt. Our vehicle had 105k miles when this break-down occurred. The mechanic found a suitable replacement transmission from a vehicle that had been in a rear-end collision, and it only had 38k miles. We chose to have the transmission replaced with the used part that only had 38k miles. Of course, the mechanic kept all the old parts, and I was never in a position to see the work in progress. I was not given any specific information about the other vehicle's make and model other than the fact that it was not a Mercury Monterey. After doing some research, I now have concluded that it was most likely a Ford freestar transmission we received as a replacement part. It has been 2-1/2 years and 22k more miles since this incident (equaling 60k total miles on the replacement transmission), and we are now taking this vehicle back into the shop again because of more transmission problems. Is there anything anyone can do?.
