1 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem of the 2005 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 09/02/2011

I was driving off of an exit ramp onto a secondary road, had just made the turn and was beginning to accelerate when the van completely lost its "pull" and would not go into gear. The electrical system still functioned fine, and the engine would rev, but the vehicle would not go. There were no warning signs whatsoever prior to the complete loss of pull. This situation was very concerning because had I been performing another action like crossing a 4 lane highway, I could have easily been hit. Additionally, with only 65,000 miles on the vehicle, I feel that this failure must be a defect in the transmission as there has not been a sufficient amount of wear and tear on the vehicle to justify this level of repair. (my in-laws purchased the vehicle new and were both conservative drivers and I am a mother of two small children and also tend to be a very conservative driver so the vehicle has not been exposed to any rough driving conditions. ) I had the vehicle towed to a transmission shop where they indicated that there was an internal problem with the transmission and it would have to be rebuilt at a cost of approximately $1,800. I am reporting this because I am concerned that the sudden loss of power could cause an accident and I want other Mercury Monterey owners to be aware of this possibility.

2 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem of the 2005 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 06/19/2010

We were driving our 2005 Mercury Monterey minivan about 45 mph on a fairly busy street when the car began losing speed. My husband thought maybe the car had slipped into neutral so he downshifted from drive to 3 but still no power. He tried lower gears and he stepped on the gas several times. The tachometer responded but the car would not accelerate or go into any gear. We were fortunate enough to be able to coast to a nearby parking lot without being struck but the car would not go into any gear. It was like the transmission totally failed. No warning lights, no noises, nothing alerted us that the transmission was about to fail. It was a little frightening and very frustrating.

3 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem of the 2004 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 06/04/2010

5 days after a wonderful vacation (in which I used my 2004 Mercury Monterey van), I was driving to work when I felt a shifting in the front of the vehicle as I was turning a corner. I knew something was wrong right away and pulled (coasted) into a parking space. Luckily, I was on a side street and not a highway. I put car in park and listened and waited for a moment. When I shifted into reverse to leave the parking space, nothing happened. I tried forward and reverse a few more times, I turned off the air conditioning and made sure the radio was still working. The car would still not change gears. Had the car towed ($75) and needed a new (rebuilt) transmission - $2,300. Warranty expired a few months ago, so it was all out of pocket. It took a week to fix the vehicle, so I was without a car for that period of time. I have 30,000 mi. On the car. I have no confidence left when I drive this van now and there's no way I can afford a new vehicle right now. These are family vans and I wonder when Mercury/Ford will own up to this problem?? it's quite scary.

4 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem of the 2004 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 05/18/2010

With no warning, our van would not go into any gear. We were fortunate to be just pulling away when transmission disengaged and not on the highway. After investigating problem, seems mechanic will have to replace/rebuild transmission.

5 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem of the 2004 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 03/24/2010

No prior warning, working fine then not working at all. . . Will not go into gear (engine will rev, you can shift to reverse, or drive but nothing). Transmission failure on my Mercury Monterey 2004. I have not corrected the problem as of yet dealership says new transmission cost is $3500.

6 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem of the 2004 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 02/12/2010

I own a 2004 Mercury montery. I was driving down a main road when all of a sudden, when I stepped on the gas the van quit moving. I had no warning, the rpms moved but my vehicle would not move in any gear. I managed to make it into the left turn lane on a very busy road, and had to wait 40 minutes for a towtruck, the whole time hoping I wouldn't get hit. There was no shoulder on this particular road to pull off on. It was very frightening. This could have been extremely dangerous had this happened on my way to the university. I have to drive about 40 miles on an expressway at night for my classes, if this would have happened then I could have been in alot of trouble. Not just the fact of getting hit on the expressway but being a female stranded at night alone on the expressway. I hope Ford is forced to fix this problem.

7 Transmission Not Go Into Gear problem of the 2004 Mercury Monterey

Failure Date: 09/13/2008

Driving at 40 mph when my transmission suddenly completely failed. Car will not go into any gear at all. There was no forewarning either immediately before the failure or in the weeks and months leading up to it. The transmission was operating with no problems or aberrant sounds. The transmission fluid was changed according to scheduled maintenance.
