Structure:body:hatchback/liftgate:hinge and attachments - the left hinge on the liftgate on my 2004 Mercury Mountaineer fractured, causing the glass liftgate to swing out. The right hinge held but shows corrosion. This appears to be the same issue in NHTSA campaign 04v442000 for model years 2002 - 2003. The liftgate is no longer operational. I have not yet replace the parts.
2004 Mercury Mountaineer-the rear hatch hinge broke. Looks like it is corroded. Have not found out how much this costs because of lack of money. Have found numerous reports online and even a recalls for the year before this for the same thing. Why isn't this being recalled? I am a 5ft 2 inch woman, and I had to catch this when it fell off. It could have broken my legs.
My wife was closing the rear window portion of the rear hatch and the 2 hinges snapped off and the whole window fell down to the bumper she had to get a chair to put under it so it didn't crash to the floor all this by herself trying to take the kids to school she could not go anywhere I think what it actually is the struts are bad and they are what caused the problem.
The contact owns a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. When the contact attempted to close the rear hatch window, it suddenly exploded. She noticed that the rear driver's side window hatch had fallen off of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic and the contact was informed that the rear lift gate needed to be replaced. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The contact owns a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. While the vehicle was parked, the window liftgate shattered when it was closed. The dealer stated that the vehicle had previously been repaired under NHTSA campaign id numbers 04v442000 (structure:body: hatchback/liftgate:hinge and attachments), 01i010000 (visibility: glass, side/rear), and 07e104000 (visibility:glass, side/rear); therefore, the contact would be responsible for the repair cost. Updated 09/15/08 updated 09/17/08.
My lift gate glass hinges have started to fail, the pin holding the top and bottom part of the hinges together have come out on one side of both hinges causing them to turn and start letting the other side come out. Eventually within the next couple of months the glass will fall out all together. Because of this the latch does not line up right and has cause the exterior trim molding to completely crack from top to bottom. I have ordered the hinges to be replaced and I will have to pay for this repair myself before something bad happens, even though there is a recall for this on the previous years of my vehicle.
Plastic piece between the back window and lift gate handle keeps cracking. A ($400 repair) 2002 Mercury Mountaineer.
Vehicle purchased used 6/3/07. About 2 months later, noticed a popping noise from rear hatch area when turning on slight inclines (eg. Parking lots. Around oct 21, 2007, on opening rear hatch, left hinge bolt came out- glass dropped and was caught. Dealer said hatch recall does not include this VIN #. Paid out of pocket for repair.
Same problem as described in "safety recall 04s20" concerning liftgate glass hinge.
Last year I had the same failure on the hinge that holds the glass in the hatch. I was attempting to close the glass when it cracked. I couldn't put the window down, so proceeded to drive to the auto body shop where he stated he had never seen this type of problem. I got it replaced and am a little worried this will happen again.
I own a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer. On 6/23/07, I placed several articles into the cargo area through the liftgate window hatch. When I attempting to close the hatch the hinges gave way and the entire window hatch fell into my arms. Fortunately I was able to hold onto it and disconnect the pistons that supported the window. The hinge pins had sheared off and broke through the upper pivot of the hinge. Had a child been closing this hatch it could have killed them.
The contact owns a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact stated that the rear driver's side wheel bearing was replaced 3 times within 16 months. On October 1, 2008, while driving out of the driveway at an unknown speed, she heard a loud noise. The vehicle was towed to the repair shop and the mechanic stated that the rear driver's side wheel bearing failed. The contact stated that the vehicle was not driven on dirt roads, only in the city. She feels that either the wheel bearing is defective or the Ford dealer did not properly correct the previous failures. The Ford dealer stated that the vehicle is out of warranty and the wheel bearing is only good for 12,000 miles. The manufacturer took a report and stated that they will forward her information to the dealer. From there, the dealer will determine if the vehicle will be repaired. The failure mileage was 74,494 and current mileage was 104,000. Updated 11/14/08
the driver side visor was hanging down, the vehicle stalled on several occasions. The lower ball joints and outer tie rod ends were replaced. The rear hatch window cracked. The vehicle would crank, but it would not start. Updated 11/18/08.

Back lift shattered when closing, resulting in shattered glass in my hand, inside the car, on top of the car and all over the parking lot near other cars (everywhere) and brackets hanging from the wires on the top (it was raining outside!). I drove car to dealer who after initial questions and Ford approval then advised of recall and provided a replacement car during repairs but it took 6 weeks to repair. Amazing while the 6 week repairs of "waiting for parts" I got a recall notice in the mail (Aug 05). After bothering the dealer to get the car back, I was called to pick up the car and I was told the "check engine soon light" is coming on! when I picked it up, I not only see the light is intermittent coming on, but my electric window switches are not working to put the windows up and down (except the front passenger works fine) and the driver seat belt is not retracting correctly! this car is only 3 years old!!.

I was making sure all the doors of my 2002' Mountaineer were closed and when I shut the back lift gate one of the connecting brackets came out of place and caused the whole thing to shatter a spray glass in my face. I read on your website that this is a know defect by Ford, I contacted Ford on this and they basically told me since my car was out of warrenty they dont care and the part cost over $1200 to be replaced - because the way it was designed you cannot get just the glass I need body parts too.
