Being having problems with rear lift gate [ not staying close, opens anytime, it wants to by itself. My transmission problems erratic shifting, hard shifting up and down shifting and in and out shifting on reverse from park to reverse pulls very hard. When I bought the car I told them they looked at like I didn't know what I was saying they made an appointment for mechanic to check it and said it was good but it wasn't. I have 84,000 miles on it never pull a trailer with it I've made 38 payments on it. Why does Ford puts a product like that and asks alot of money for the car that can't even make to 100,000 miles they should be out of act. Hope Ford will take care of this cars.

While parked outside my office door the back liftgate window and liftgate blew out for no apparent reason. Glass inside and outside the vehicle. Had the children been seated in the 3rd seat they would have been seriously injured. Ford motor CO refused to acknowledge any responsibility, the insurance company handles it as a comp claim and I was out $250. And without an answer as to why it happened and would it happen again!??.

The dealer johnson brothers never notified me of the tailgate recall or the recall #rq8003 for the liftgate issue in 2008. This dealer has been the worst ive seen since buying my first new or used vehicle in America. I ,[xxx], have only received help concerning oil changes , and tire checks since 2004. Poor service center for customers. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

17 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 12/15/2007

Crack in the rear liftgate to the left side of the Mercury emblem. When we first noticed the crack, it was about 1/2 way down the plastic, then within a week it was all the way though. I'm not sure if there is any structural components that are effected by the crack or what may have caused the crack. I'm not sure if the glass is effected or not, but I'm concerned that whatever caused the plastic to crack will also effect the strength of the glass.

18 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

20 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 07/01/2007

I filed a much more serious complaint this evening regarding an issue with the cruise control causing a complete shutdown of power on our vehicle. Please be advised that I do not make a habit of filing these complaints. I was not even aware of this website until today. However, after I filed the complaint, I checked to see if you had record of other consumers with the same problem. When I looked at the complaints that had been registered for this vehicle's make and model I saw that at least 2 others have registered complaints for what seems to be a manufacturers defect. I thought that I would make you aware that our vehicle also has this same issue. One other complainant wrote that he was told that Ford was aware of this defect, but was refusing to acknowledge that it was a defect. On the liftgate, just below the center of the window, adjacent to the Mercury logo there is an approximate 6 inch crack in the body of the door. It has been there for about 6 months. Since the vehicle only had about 45,000 miles on it at the time, my husband and I agree that this should not have occurred.

21 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/30/2007

We purchased our Mercury in February of 2007. At the time of purchase it had around 36,000 miles. It currently has around 46,000 miles. I have a concern on the vehicle that I believe is a defect in material workmanship or a flaw in the design of the vehicle. The rear of the vehicle has a crack on the rear liftgate trim. The crack starts right below the rear wiper and cracks along what appears to be the weak points of the rear body trim. I have noticed several vehicles with the same problem that are Mercury Mountaineers and Ford explorers with the same body style and approximate time of manufacture. There is no reason for the plastic trim to crack in such a place. It is like a stress fracture in the hatch. I believe this to be a factory defect in the design and workmanship of the vehicle, and I do not believe that a vehicle which is 3 years old and has low mileage should have such a stress fracture. I believe that Ford motor company should look into this matter and correct this problem. It is my understanding that Ford is aware of this problem and is avoiding taking responsibility to repair this issue.

22 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/22/2007

Noticed this crack that formed in the window panel, of the liftgate. It runs from the bottom edge of the window, down to the Mercury logo, then around it to the bottom.

23 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 02/16/2007

Tailgate has a "stress fracture crack" below the wiper assembly and traveling approximately 6" down to the logo on the tailgate. There was no identified reason for crack to occur. Vehicle taken to dealership local service manager indicated that there have been approximately 500 reported incidents of this type however Ford/Mercury has not issued a recall. Recommended buying a new tailgate for $500. The crack indicates a manufacturer's defect that compromises the structural integrity of the tailgate assembly. I'm concerned about putting people in third row bench and/or the consequences of getting struck from the rear with the existing tailgate.

24 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/20/2007

Rear middle hatchback has crack in molding from bottom of window all the way down. Possibly due to cold weather.

25 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 11/17/2006

The hatch back door on my Mercury Mountaineer split in half from the base of the window to the bottom of the hatch door. I believe the placement of the Mercury symbo liner the top center of the hatch weakens the hatch causing it to split with use and / or with a sudden change in temperature.

26 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 09/12/2006

Liftgate cracked. Part will need to be replaced or possibility of window falling out. Was told by my Mercury dealer that this is a known fault in vehicle but since it happens between 40,000 and 50,000 miles it is no longer Ford/Mercury's responsibility since cars are out of warranty.

27 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 02/18/2006

I own a 2002 Mercury mtnr. 85,000 mi. Normal, expected usage. . 4 wks ago noticed a crack in the rear lift up door panel above/below the ctr. Of the mtnr. Logo. Crack thr/thr plastic panel. . Door is used frequently as access to the rear storage area. . 2 days later took it to the Ford/merc. Dealer, serv. Mngr. States that he has recently seen another "same" crack. . Contacted Ford who stated that they would not take any responsibility as the vehicle had >100,000mi. . Same result when he contacted them for my vehicle, sent in for reconsideration with pictures of the vehicle/crack. . . Appears to be an engineering/manufacturing problem, not specifically related to >mileage as much as related to frequent usage of this door, and a plastic panel susceptible to breakage secondary to design/placement of logo, creating a "weak" area that is exposed to frequent "banging down" as the door is closed. . Ford's answer the second time was a denial of resonsibility and a suggestion that the owners contact their insurance company (not the correct or customer friendly response, as this would only result in customer paying out a deductible and/or being subjected to increased insurance rates). . . I realize that this is not a failure that resulted in accident, injury or death, but it is one more example of how the american automobile manufacturers are not listening to the customers and certainly not standing behind their products, as defects, faults are identified secondary to less than excellent design, engineering, and manufacturing. . When will the american auto industry realize that the average consumer is not impressed with the high powered, dramatic advertisements seen todau, and would like them to be interested in producing a safe, sturdy, well engineered vehicle. . . I am very concerned that Ford has taken no interest or resonsibility for such an obvious product defect. . . . I have had the panel ordered and it will pay to have it replaced. . . Have there been other such incidents noted?. . . . Thank you .

33 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

The liftgate was made out of plastic and had stress fracturers from top to bottom, which was caused by constantly opening and closing. The liftgate was not durable enough to be closed with force or window would shatter. Vehicle was taken to dealership, but the problem had not been resolved.

34 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 12/31/2004

Recall repair ineffective and aggravated initial problem - "cure worse than the disease. " rear liftgate window shattered. Following dealer repair for recall 04s29, our rear window shattered explosively within 48 hours. This was the type of issue the recall repair was supposed to prevent. Incident occured in garage while vehicle was stationary, spreading glass in a 6 foor radius inside and outside of the vehicle. The rear liftgate had not been opened since the recall repair was completed.

35 Hatchback/liftgate problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 08/23/2004

: the contact stated "on 8/23/04, the rear liftgate window of my 2003 Mercury Mountaineer violently exploded while parked. The force of the explosion sent glass flying into the rear of my vehicle and into the parking lot. The dealer had my car for 9 days before Ford sent a representative to view the damage. Against several opinions, Ford denied responsibility because there were dog crates in the back. These crates had been in my Mountaineers for years & didn't even come close to the window. I found dozens of idiopathic exploding liftgate incidents on the NHTSA site for the Ford explorer and Mercury Mountaineer - at the time, NHTSA advised that Ford was about to issue a voluntary recall. I did get the recall weeks after the incident, but my attempts to obtain reimbursement from Ford for repair of this defective liftgate glass for myself and my insurer were unsuccessful. My complaint made it to the executive offices of Ford, but they would not even talk to me because my insurance company was not subrogating - the claim was just too small for my insurer to pursue. However, there is a principle involved, and I am completely disgusted with Ford motor company. I had the car repaired by insurance after I paid the deductible, and then a couple months later, the recall work for the liftgate was done by my dealer. Recently, I noticed that the new liftgate has an ever enlarging crack down the center of the liftgate glass frame - my dealer says it is not structural and not to worry, but due to the history of this vehicle, I fear that another explosion is imminent. I was in the car at the time of the first explosion, and it was scary. I have had a warning magnetic sign placed on the rear of my vehicle to warn people to stay away from the rear of my vehicle in case of another explosion, and my dog crates are now shielded with a sun blanket to protect from flying glass. Ford has created such bad will with me that this likely will be the last Ford product I own. ".
