2 Tailgate problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 04/23/2016

Rear tailgate window hinge broke while having the window only open and putting away groceries. Upon closing the window, the right hinge broke causing the window to almost fall off of the car. I attempted, with assistance from others in the parking lot, to push the window back into the frame and have it lock at the center latch. The latch is no longer engaged and I have attempted to push on the window to connect with the latch. I am not strong enough to do so. The window is at a point where it could fall off of my car. There was a recall on this part for 2000-2003 vehicles of this make and model. Ford is not carrying over the recall to 2004 stating the defect is not the same (with the details) as the recall itself. It is still the same defective part! I am of short stature and do not have the strength to push the window the 1" or so to get it into the frame to lock successfully. I have contacted my local Ford dealership for advice but have been told I would need to pay out of pocket. I am at risk of having the window fall off the back of my car and do not currently have the money to pay for this repair at this time. There have been several complaints noted for this equipment failure on this site for the 2004 Mountaineer. Just not sure what to do next. My vehicle is my bread and butter in order to work.

4 Tailgate problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 11/16/2012

The hasn't been an accident. I wanted to report that I have a cracked tailgate on my vehicle. The crack appeared one morning - I wasn't even driving the vehicle. The cracked begins at the top of the tailgate, around the emblem part of the lift gate, then down towards the tailgate lift handle. I called my local Ford dealer, citrus Ford, ontario, CA, but was informed there wasn't a recall and the issue had to deal with water leaking into the locking mechanism and cracking because its plastic and not metal. At least the dealership didn't accuse me of being in an accident, but no efforts were made to repair the cracked tailgate at no cost to me, the customer. Can NHTSA push Ford to recall this matter?.

5 Tailgate problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 09/04/2010

I own a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer has four thousand miles. The vehicle was storage in garage for four and half years. I started to use the vehicle on last fall of 2009. On September I see the tailgate developed a crack around the emblem and the rear glass. The heater is not working also. This is obvious manufacture defects!.

6 Tailgate problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

I own a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. The tailgate developed a crack between the emblem and the rear glass lift. It was fixed once already and has since cracked again. Since this crack has developed, the door ajar light has come on. I have noticed the same crack in almost every Ford explorer and Mountaineer that I see. I contacted the dealer to have it repaired again and was told that they only cover the repair once. I don't feel I should have to pay out of pocket for an obvious manufacturing defect. I then contacted Ford and was told there is nothing they can do for me. Keep in mind, I have also had numerous visits for my transmission having issues from the beginning and I have also had issues with the cruise control where it suddenly "takes off" and goes really fast. Ford needs to stand by it's vehicles and fix them when there are obvious manufacturer defects!.

7 Tailgate problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/03/2010

I have 2003 Mercury Mountaineer and I have had it since February 2007. I have had numerous problems with it and the last problems was the breaking point. I have three more years to pay for this vehicle and I want something to be done about the problems with this vehcile. Ford should be held responsible for this vehicle and fixing the problems associated with it. I purchased this vehicle from community Ford in new albany, ms in February 2007 with 45,000 miles on it. I couldn't get an extended warranty or any warranty with the vehicle I was told. After a year, I had to replace the front end and it was $500. 00 at george's tire services. I took it in due to this noise coming from the front and I was advised that if I didn't have the work did it would lock up on me while I am driving and cause and accident. I noticed that my structure body:hatchback/tailgate has cracked completely. My seat belt on the driver side in the back don't work. My engine cooling system aircompressor has went out and I have electrical problems where my oil gauge is constantly saying it's low. I have my oil change every 3000 miles. I am hearing this noise in the rear of the vehicle and I don't know what it is and can't afford to get going to Ford to see what it is. I have been smelling this burning coming from the under the hood and I don't know what it is either. My lastest problem is my transmission is going out and I have had this vehicle for two years and I have three more years of payment on this vehicle. My transmission cost me around $3500 and I don't have any warranty on it. This is a lemon I have purchased and I think something should be done about it.

8 Tailgate problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

Hello and good day, when I 1st purchased my Mountaineer (purchased used with approx 119,000 miles) I took it to get it washed. When I was getting it washed the rear hatch panel (the rectangular panel under the glass with the make and model name) cracked and broke apart. I tried to contact Ford and Mercury concerning this to explain what happened and how part of the car literally fell off. They informed me that they would not recall this but that I could take it to my local dealer and they could fix it for $750! I did research to find, literally, thousands of complaints about the same exact problem. People's rear hatch panels are falling off while driving all the time, I see it on the road alot. Since the panel fell off, the retaining metal piece that holds the reatch hatch clasp in place to the door, it rusting off. This is because the panel is broken off and water/ice has rusted the area, where usually water and ice could not reach it. This small problem is not causing multiple problems. I am concerned that more of my rear panel will fly off while driving and cause an accident I am concerned that my rear hatch panel will come open while driving (the clasp could rust off anytime) and cause an accident or it will fly open and stuff will fly out of my car and then cause an accident I am concerned that my panel will open while parked and my car /possessions will be stolen I am concerned that the door clasp will cause my car alarm (factory) to go off and run my batter down and/or short out my electrical system. . 9 Tailgate problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 07/07/2009

On the tailgate of the Mountaineer, due to heat/cold a crack started from the windshield and went down past the "Mercury" emblem down to the next panel.

10 Tailgate problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/15/2009

I have a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer and it has a crack on the liftgate that starts at the top in the middle, goes around the Mercury emblem and continues down to the bottom of the liftgate. I am worried that the glass will fall out or break one day when I hit a bump or close the tailgate. Or will the glass shatter when I hit a bump or close it?.

11 Tailgate problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 10/07/2008

I own a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. The tailgate developed a crack between the emblem and the rear glass lift. Since this crack has developed, the door ajar light has stayed on consistently, causing the interior light to stay on, draining the battery, which had to be replaced. I have noticed the same crack in almost every Ford explorer that I see. I have not yet attempted a repair because I don't feel I should have to pay out of pocket for an obvious manufacturing defect.

12 Tailgate problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 08/20/2008

The failure is for a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer and the failure is a crack in the lift gate that occurs right alongside the Mercury emblem or logo on the back of the tailgate or lift gate. This crack has been reported numerous times on online forums and to me seems like a deficiency in the material that makes up the lift gate or tailgate. (I. E. - the logo is so big and the material around the logo emblem so thin that it cracks under pressure and change in temperature) I would also like to add that I have been told that the Ford explorer has a recall for this exact type of problem, yet Mercury has yet to issue a recall for the Mountaineer. The vehicles that have incurred this type of problem have been around the same years (2004-2006 models - or at least the vehicles that I have seen this problem occur in. ) 1. The events that have led up to this failure includes: Mercury and Ford are solely to blame for producing a faulty tailgate or lift gate on these vehicles and should recall them. The change in temperature along with average usage of shutting or closing the tailgate would cause a vibration to promote the tailgate to crack. I noticed my failure or crack in mid-August of 2008, I've owned my vehicle since 2004 but it has been garaged all of those years except for last year, which could explain why it happened last year (change in temperature more severe). 2. I have noted how the failure occurs, its consequences include a crack in the lift gate of the vehicle, which is aesthetically non-appealing, and this could lead to a larger crack in the lift gate that could eventually cause major problems for the vehicle. This crack (which is not minor, 3 - 5 inches usually) could also reduce or lead to compromising the vehicles structural integrity and reduce crash test ratings. This is a big concern for your safety. 3. I personally spent over $400 to replace the entire lift gate. I should be reimbursed and Mercury should recall this problem.

13 Tailgate problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/01/2008

The failure is for a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer. The failure is a crack in the lift gate that occurs right alongside the Mercury emblem or logo on the back of the tailgate or lift gate. This crack has been reported numerous times here and in online forums. To me seems like a deficiency or a defect in the material that makes up this panel that is a part of the lift gate glass and the tailgate as a unit. . I would also like to add that the 2002-2006 Mercury Mountaineers and the Ford explorer share this same tailgate with the same problem. Mercury and Ford are solely to blame for producing this faulty part of the tailgate or lift gate and should step up and recall them. . I noticed my failure or crack in June of 2008 with less than 60k miles on it. I am an original owner since 2003. A big concern is safety, someone walking by the SUV and getting cut on the sharp plastic, just looking at the crack is disturbing. Here in southern CA. Fairway Ford wants $425. 00 and cerritos Ford Lincoln Mercury wants $625. 00 to fix the same problem. . I was made aware of this problem in 2004. We were picking up the SUV after having the rear glass hinges replaced per the recall. At that time the service writer at villa Ford told me, try not to push on the emblem to close the glass, the panel will crack in time. . (1. ) I wonder how many of these panels were replaced under warranty due to the crack? (2. ) why Ford or Mercury never disclosed the problem? I did call Mercury, they took the complaint and said they would put it on the NHTSA web site, but they never did.

14 Tailgate problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 11/22/2006

A large crack spontaneously formed running vertically down the panel of the rear liftgate of our 2002 Mercury Mountaineer near the emblem. I have not been able to ascertain if the crack has led to a failure of the tailgate integrity as far as waterproofing is concerned. .

15 Tailgate problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 03/01/2006

Tailgate has developed crack in the plastic of the gate. The plastic is bonded to the rear window glass. Apparently dissimilar expansion coefficients result in cracking of the gate. Local repair shop has replaced 3 in the last month, not including mine.

16 Tailgate problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/10/2005

The rear panel of ,my 2002 Mercury Mountaineer was replaced when the rear window blew out. This indicint occurred when the vehicle was parked in my driveway, and we found later that there was a massive recall due to this defect. Now, the rear panel is literally peeling away from the truck, we took it to the dealer where we usually go for repairs and was told that the vehicle is no longer under warranty and that we would have to just live with it. I find this completely unacceptable. The vehicle is barely three years old and I have had several problems with it; although most of them have been adressed, I am completely shocked that I have to drive around wondering whether the rear panel is going to fly off and possibly cause damage to another vehichle or even worse cause injury to an individual. I am contacting Ford motor company today to formally let them know of my complaint, becuase I'd like to know how long is the warranty period on a manufacturers defect that was repaired. Thanks, denise.

17 Tailgate problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/15/2005

: the contact stated the tailgate was cracked below the window. When the vehicle was purchased, the tailgate was already cracked. The service dealer repaired the crack. A year later, the tailgate began cracking again and has progressively become worse; its cracked all the way down through the plastic panel below the window. The contact stated that the window comes down so hard that it may be the reason for the cracking tailgate.

18 Tailgate problem of the 1997 Mercury Mountaineer
