There is a manufacturing fault with the position of the brake and the gas pedal. It is very easy to move the right foot from the gas to the brake and leave enough of the foot on the gas at the same time. It allows the brake to be pressed but also applies gas to give a vehicle a surge while braking. Had the same situation with a 2001 Ford taurus and Ford issued a recall notice to have the placement of pedals changed.

Two problems. . . First whenever I shift into reverse there is a hesitation and it takes longer than it should to reverse. Im also experiencing a jerk before I come to a complete stop. Second . . The back of my lift has a crack from the bottom of the window to the Mercury symbol and then it continues down under the symbol. I've done some research and there re lots of others with these same issues. I only have about 70000 miles on it.

My 2003 Mercury Mountaineer has a crack right down the middle of the rear door, I thought it was just my Mountaineer but I see every Mountaineer of my make and model has that same crack, why is that, it has to be
a defect from the factory because everybody with a Mountaineer of the same year make and model
can't be related. So I would like to know why this crack has happened on these Mountaineer is there a safety
problem because there definite a structure problem andits damage to my I am not happy about the crack
its damage to my car I didn't cause and Mercury should fix it.

Tl- the contact owns a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact stated the overhead console that controls the air conditioning, the dome lights in the rear of the vehicle, and the bracket had separated from the vehicle. The dealer nor manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 38,995 and the current mileage was 39,000. Vf.
Hit the remote control button to open the rear hatch for the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. The rear hatch opened only halfway automatically, as it is suppose to open further I pushed it up, without unusual force and the entire rear window shattered, and the encasement that held it hit me in the head rather hard. It is now without a window. This is the second window replacement. The first rear window was replaced in 2004 when, during a cold snap here in NY it spidered into a crack but did not shatter. When my husband took it to the dealer as it was still under warranty they argued at first, but then the phone started to ring and they decided it was an ongoing problem and design "flaw".

While driving the driver seat slides back into exit form and it is hard to reach the gas and brakes and the interior lights come on. This happens periodically while driving if you touch the ignition as if you are going to start the vehicle the seat will go back into place and the interior lights will go off.

Driver seat moves back into exit position and interior lights come on while driving. This happens at any speed periodically and while going over bumps. I am very short so when this happens I have a difficult time reaching the gas/brake. I have 4 young children and this is a very big safety issue while driving.
Glass lift gate strut froze when it was opened when I tried to close it, the force broke the hinge at the top. If I had not immediately supported the lift gate it would have fallen. The hinge on the other side was cracked and bent and about to give. The emblem on the gate has also been cracked for quite awhile. I did have the transmission fluid issue addressed when the vehicle was still under warranty, but still experience transmission slamming into gear in reverse at various times.

In July 2008 filed my first complaint when the entire back lift gate and window blew out while vehicle was parked. Insurance repaired it, I paid a 200. 00 deductible. Again the medallion has cracked 3/4 of the way and I am wondering if this is the start of another lift gate blow out/glass all over, etd.
The contact owns a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer. He experienced difficult steering, because the front sway bar linkage had fractured. Secondly he would intermittently smell an odor of gasoline inside of the vehicle. Thirdly during brake application the accelerator pedal would also stick. This condition would cause the vehicle to lurch forward. Lastly the main bar that held the two bumpers together had corroded. The failures were described in recalls (98v060000, 00v422000, 00v402000). However he was advised by representatives from the dealer and the manufacturer that the previous owner had the vehicle repaired according the recalls. The current mileage was approximately 157,000. The failure mileage was approximately 156,000.

No single event led to the failure. This appears to be a structural defect in the rear lift door of the Mercury Mountaineer. The mounting plates for the rear door hinges have failed. Note that the hinges have not failed. The failure is in the mounting point in the door. One side has completely cracked through and the other side has partially cracked. The consequences are that if both mount points fail there will not be any thing holding the top of the rear lift door. The door could therefore separate from the car and fall off the vehicle. If the mount points fail, the only items holding the door would be the side lift cylinders. These cylinders would not be strong enough to keep the door attached to the vehicle. The failure was discovered 2 days ago. Actions taken so far are limited to getting estimates to fix problem. Mercury dealer representative was not helpful since vehicle is a 2000 Mountaineer and not under any warranty. His response was limited to saying he had never seen the problem before and giving me the name of a collision repair shop. However, I believe this is a major structural failure and a severe safety issue since
if the hinge mounts fail completely and the door falls off the vehicle when on the highway, a major accident might result.

The glass in the lift rear gate fell out into my son's hand. Thank god, he did not suffer any injuries. I had to take it in and have the hinges replaced. This repair cost me $100 because I had a warranty. Previous incidents similar to mine have been reported. The car manufactures need to come up with a better design.
I have a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer with auto running boards. The running boards seem to have a mind of their own. Both have been replaced by the dealer, the latest was 5-5-09. Today when our daughter was entering the passenger side the running board opened up like it was supposed to but closed at once onto our daughter foot. The passenger door was still open when it closed and the running board would not retract. We were very lucky not to have suffered serious injury. If she had been 7 instead of 15 I would hate to think what might have happened.

The paint on the rear lid of my 2003 Mountaineer is pealing. Dealer and two auto body repair shops have verified that the problem is a factory defect. Ford/Mercury refuses to correct the problem. They have referred me to their warranty information. The problem is a defect caused by them during the manufacturing of the vehicle.
Rear panel under window has recently cracked, there are now 2 vertical cracks running down the back of the vehicle. Also, hitch to rear door doesn't stay up. This vehicle has also had a new engine put it and injectors have popped out on more than one occasion. This is the most expensive vehicle I have ever purchased and it has given me more problems than I could ever expect in a vehicle. Ford needs to compensate for this vehicle. We have owned several Ford's and have never seen anything like this. It is a true lemon>>>>.
The contact owns a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact noticed a crack next to the emblem on the rear hatch door of the vehicle. The dealer speculated that cold weather conditions may have potentially caused the failure. The repair would cost $700 because the vehicle is over three years old. The vehicle has not been repaired and the manufacturer did not assist. The failure mileage was 85,000 and current mileage was 86,000. Updated 04-20-09 updated 04/24/09.
My 2005 Mercury Mountaineer developed a crack in the rear lift gate right around the Mercury emblem. I have seen many more with the same problem, both Ford explorers and the Mercury Mountaineer. When I took it to the dealer they were like too bad so sad it is out of warranty even though I bought a extended warranty from Ford. I have been looking around now and I see lots of them with the same problem. I have heard that Ford is fixing the explorers if it is under 5 years and under 75,000 miles but that just seems to be a dealer thing, I have not seen any official account of this.
I also have a crack on my lift gate around the emblem and every Mercury I see on the road also has it. I also believe they should do a recall on this issue.
While driving on freeway over a small crack, dashboard reported that rear driver side door became loose, had to pull over and re-close the door. I drive this route/lane everyday to work, it hasn' t happen for six months (that's when I bought my Mountaineer). Don't know if this is a random event or due to some design problem. It can be scary, what if the door became wide open while driving! remember the door is closed before it became loose.

The driver's side of the dashboard was peeling. The vehice had less than 50,000 miles. The consumer contacted the the dealer and they told the consumer he would have to pay for the repairs.
2002 Mountaineer stalls, transmission control assembly, main control valve, and gasket had to be replaced. The lift gate was sticking, and while closing it, the glass shattered, the glass was recalled, and was suppose to have been fixed. The oil light illuminated. The trim on the front door fell off while driving. There was a grinding noise coming from the rear wheels, it was determined that there was severe rust on the brake componets, the park brake shoes fell apart due to corrosion, the rear wheel bearing and knuckle assembly had excessive rust.
The caller said vehicle stalled without warning several times. She stated that it did start back up. She took the vehicle to the dealer three times. Dealer said they fixed it each time. She sent manufacturer a letter on the problem and other problems. Also, the caller stated that she had the ignition switch replaced, and now when she takes it out of park something pops. Dealer will not do anything else to help her with the ignition switch. The day time running lights did not stay on, the consumer heard wind noise coming from the vehicle, the cigarette lighter did not work, there was a popping noise when the consumer placed the vehicle into gear.
I purchased my 2002 Mountaineer on June 20, 2004. When I am driving and hit the speed of 75 mph I hear a loud whistling sound and the only way to get rid of the noise is to reduce my speed to under 75 mph. I have spoken with another person who owns the same SUV and he has the same problem only on a larger scale. He has had the weather stripping replaced twice and still the noise remains. I will be taking it in soon to have it checked over since I am also having another problem when I stop and apply the brakes (loud squeaking noise).
My 2000 Mountaineer had 17,000 when purchased. I had noticed the dealer had just put new 235/75r15 goodyear wrangler r/ts on it. I was not suspicious but should have been. Ever since purchased I have had a vibration in the front end and my front tires have worn on the inside al the way down to a unsafe tread depth within 10,000 miles. The dealer alligned the front and checked for front end problems two days after purchase. At that time they found it was out but claimed they had just alligned it three days before also. At around 30,000 miles I had to replace the front tires because they were unsafe. I took them to the dealer and the gm told me that it was normal tire wear. I know quite a bit about cars but he did not know that. At that time they checked the front end allignment again and check for problems again and found nothing. A few weeks later the vbration got worse so I jacked it up myself and found that the one a-arm nut was loose. I tightend it and drove back to the dealerand showed one of their mechanics the problem. It had loosend up again already so he tightend all the a-arm nuts. Ileft and within 10 miles one was loose again. I went back to the dealer and told them to replace all the a-arm bolts and nuts. I have since went through 2 more sets of front tires ,so that is 4 sets of tires in 63,000 miles, but they say there is nothing wrong . Anyone having these same uneven tire wear and vibration problems please contact me. 865-776-2246 brian.
From the time the consumer purchased the vehicle there have been problems with it. The transmission in the vehicle made a loud clunking sound. The dealer replaced the transmission once but the consumer continued to experience problems. The head liner on the ceiling fell down.
Three sets of goodyear, eagle LS tires, size p24570r16 (no dot # mentioned) with less than one hundred miles had to be replaced because knots were found on sidewall and tread. Dealer has been contacted. Engine light illuminated due to faulty dpfe sensor; air bag light on, air bag module replaced; loose rear center console; vibration and popping noise over bumps, replaced and balanced all four tires, replaced stabilizer bar links, rims were out of round; scrunching noise while turning, rack and pinion replaced; experiencing whistling noise; hard jerk and popping noise when shifting, gear selector slippage; a/c vent squeaking, a/c vent readjusted.
Problems with radio, paint and rear windshield wiper. There was a loud grinding noise coming from the front of the vehicle as well as the engine area, when the noise stopped, a cloud of black emitted from the vehicle. The dealer stated it was normal, because the all wheel drive had activated for the first time. The weather stripping around the windshield was replaced and there was a problem with the power train.

Vehicle's rear end "kicked out" counter clockwise on steep downhill grades. The consumer was involved in a spin out accident where the rear end spun out clockwise on a steep downhill grade of snow. The consumer found the seat belt was not designed for small framed people approximately 5 feet 2 inches of height. The seat belt had come off the center/sternum and slipped under her arm pit, and did not lock down on the lap. The seat belt cut into the left side of the neck and during the accident the belt slipped off the consumer's chest to her arm pit. The dealer suggested the consumer use a clip.
