Gear shift lock sticks and does not always engage allowing shift lever to move the full range of transmission positions while driving. The orange position indicator is loose and floats freely so you never know what position the transimssion is in.

2 Automatic Transmission Floor Shift problem of the 1997 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 09/01/2003

The automatic transmission lever position module failed. When this occurred, the windshield wipers/power steering and other components malfunctioned. The consumer replaced the part. The dealer indicated that this was a common failure with this make/model, but the cause was undetermined.

3 Automatic Transmission Floor Shift problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 06/15/2003

Consumer noticed shift indicator light was not working on the floor shift as he shifted gears at low speed. Gear shift cable had come loose, dealer replaced the cable.
