The contact owns a 2003 Mercury Sable. While attempting to depress the brake pedal and place the vehicle into drive, the contact's foot struck the accelerator pedal instead. The vehicle accelerated forward at a fast pace. The contact feels that the accelerator and brake pedals are too close together and could cause a crash when pressed incorrectly. He called the manufacturer and was advised to have the vehicle inspected. While driving 25 mph, the contact had to slam on the brakes in order to avoid a crash. He noticed that the steering column failed intermittently, but was able to drive the vehicle safely to his destination. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop and inspected by a technician, who stated that he does not work on steering failures. The contact was instructed to take the vehicle to a dealer. The vehicle has not yet been inspected and no repairs have been performed. The contact is in the process of notifying the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 10,000 and current mileage was 57,063.

Brake and accelerator pedals on -2001 Mercury Sable was checked in August 2003 without finding any problem with the car. I had just bought the car a couple of months prior. I informed the dealer (roundtree-moore) that I wanted to wait until later for this because if this is a certified car then it want show any thing until later, and I wanted to know that I could bring the vehicle back without a charge to repair. Now I'm being told there will be a service charge to repair and a diagnostic fee of $90. 00. I got a diagnostic from an independent mechanic which they will not accept.

Recall no. #04v106000, brake light switch: the consumer complained that the dealer charged for the recall work. The manufacturer explained to the consumer that the vehicle was not taken to a Mercury dealership, which was the reason the work was charged.
Windshield on 2002 Mercury Sable is defective. The consumer heard a noise coming from the right side of the windshield in the area of the glove box. The problem was intermittent. The problem would seem to get worse during cold weather. (rattling and whistling) the rear brake light would stay lit after the consumer exited the vehicle. The consumer would have to reopen the vehicle and step on the brake pedal a few times before the brakes would go out. (this was an occasional problem) the brake pedal was on recall which was #04106000, but the windshield was not. The windshield recall #03v087000.

Brake pedal position switch failures that caused brake lights to fail.
Petition to open an immediate investigation into why the Mercury Sable has excessive movement of the brake pedal, she owns a 2000 Mercury Sable with a defective brake pedal & airbags. The vehicle is equipped with an adjustable brake and gas pedal system which was recalled for the spacing between the pedals. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they indicated that the vehicle needed no adjustment. One day the driver was turning into a parking space when the vehicle suddenly accelerated onto a grassy median and hit a light pole. The vehicle came to rest after hitting a vehicle head on. The air bags did not deploy and both occupants were injured. On inspection of the car it was noted that the brake pedal had excessive side to side movement. The manufacturer indicated this was a normal condition.
While parking my vehicle I stepped on the brake and the car took off like it was possessed. It went up onto a grassy median ran head on into and over a light pole and came to rest after hitting a parked car head on. The brakes did not stop the car and the air bags did not deploy!! the car had been taken in for a recall on the adjustable brake and gas pedal earlier in the year and I was told no adjustment was necessary. So far it has been found that our brake pedal has too much play on it (in other words it moves side to side to much--is loose?) the adjustable brake and gas pedal and the air bags not deploying are issues that must be addressed by Ford on this vehicle.
Nhtsa recall repair of the adjustable pedals failed. Nhtsa recall # 01-v-078-000.
There is a defect in the configuration of the steering wheel. . In the process of turning left at an intersection or parking lot, the steering wheel brushed the top of the consumer's leg and with slight motion it caused the consumer' foot to move over to the accelerator. The consumer stated when he attempted to brake, his foot slipped off the brake pedal and hit the accelerator and crashed into a wall. The consumer stated the brake and accelerator pedal were designed too close together. The manufacturer did acknowledge there was a defect and a recall had been issued.
The brake lights and tail lights did not function when the brake pedal was applied. . Replaced wire line that connected brake control switch at pedal.
The vehicle experienced the same defect as stated in recall 02 v 266000.
Consumer states she received a recall #02 v266000, which states she needed to take her vehicle to her dealer and have her brakes pedals adjusted, but the dealer told her that she did not need her pedals adjusted. She states she asked him why because that is what the recall called for, and he said that he was going by Ford's specification, which states if the brake pedal and the gas pedal is 2 inches from each other then no adjustment is required. Consumer states she took her auto to liberty Lincoln Mercury 790 rte 3, clifton, NJ 07012- 973-473-6455. She would like a call to find out if that is true. Mr due to the design of the gas and brake pedal consumer's foot will get stuck between the two.

Brake pedal and gas pedal are too close together. When applying brakes foot hits accelerater , and vehicle will not stop. Please provide any further information.
When brakes are applied brake pedal is depressed and it goes down flush with accelerator pedal, causing unintentional acceleration. Brake pedal sits higher than accelrerator pedal. So acclerator does not cause a problem, untile brake is applied. Ford sent a letter stating it was within design specifications for the vehicle. The consumer depresses the accelerator pedal and the brake pedal at the same time unintentionally due to faulty design of the pedal.
A feature that was used to sell car, made for taller drivers, did not work well. When pedal was in the high position driver's foot could go under pedal. When in low position it couldn't go under pedal. There was not enough foot room for left foot. Please provide any further information.

While going over an overpass with ice on road consumer began to lose control, and went over into a ditch. Later, consumer was told that brake pedal bent. Consumer felt this pedal should not have bent.
Vehicle seemed to speed up when the brakes were applied, pressed harder on the brake pedal and the vehicle got even faster, vehicle glanced off the curb and proceeded across the intersection into the opposit curb. Resulting in damage. Cause of the problem is the brake/gas pedal are too close to each other, also the pedal attachment assembly on these adjustable pedals is such a loose fit that when the brake pedal is depressed, the driver foot can stray to the right end of the pedal and the foot will pick up the gas pedal and the gas pedal will win.
Gas and brake pedals are too close together. On more than one occasion consumer hit both pedals at the same time. This poses a serious safety risk.
Reporting design flaw with accelerator and brake pedals. Consumer believed that the two pedals are too close and the brake pedal does not sit high enough, this condition causes a problem when applying the the brake--also applied the accelerator pedal at same time. Dealer notified, and informed consumer that the way the vehicle was made, and nothing else could be done at this time.
When the adjustable brake pedal is applied, it can slide to the right, causing the driver to depress the brake and the accelerator pedal. Dealer notified, said movement is normal for the design.

Consumer states power adjustable pedals on his vehicle, which he believe were designed to close together, consumers foot engaged both pedals resulting in acceleration and accident on two occassions.
The brake pedal and accelerator are too close together and almost the same height. So, if your foot is on the right side of the brake pedal, it is very easy to also depress the accelerator at the same time. Several times while approaching a stop sign or red light, I depressed both the accelerator and the brake pedal at the same time. It felt as if the accelerator had stuck.
There is a problem with the distance between the brake and accelerator pedals, causing driver to unintentionally press the accelerator pedal when trying to brake.
The accelerator and brake pedal were too close together and caused the consumer to inadvertently depress the gas pedal.
