4 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 08/13/2018

While parked, tried to put car in reverse to back out of driveway but car will not shift out of park. Only way to get car to shift out of park is to apply emergency brakes then shift car into neutral while key turned to off position. Break lights will not illuminate when brake pedal applied. I checked all the fuses and replaced the break lamp bulbs to troubleshoot issue according to owners manual however problem still exists. When researching online I read about the same exact issues occurring in same model and make that were recalled. I went to my nearest Ford dealership to inform them about this issue and get some assistance in fixing the problem. However they would not help in the matter, and stated that my particular VIN # and year model 2004 had no recalls. The recall was issued for faulty break light switches in 2003 and previous year models of Mercury Sables. I've read about numerous issues occurring with other 2004 Mercury Sable owners that also cannot get help with this matter. This is obviously a safety issue and it is my hope that the NHTSA investigates to find out why 2004 models are also exhibiting same recall safety issues. The problem obviously lies with the part (same break light switch) Ford installed on these vehicles and not necessarily the year the vehicle was made. It has always been my understanding that the primary mission and role of the NHTSA is to help keep the public safe and informed about potential safety issues. Therefore, I hope they not only investigate why Ford used the same faulty part on other year model vehicles but also issue the necessary recall for said vehicles with those parts. If, while traveling with my family, a car slams into us because no break lights will engage, whose fault is that? I've brought this safery issue concern to the attention of Ford and now the NHTSA. Failure to address this issue puts the public in danger!.

13 Service Brakes problem of the 2000 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 12/10/2015

I was in a parking lot of a store, started my car, headed out onto a city street, turned right. All of a sudden my vehicle took off, started speeding up. I stepped on the brake, it slowed the vehicle down a little, but the brake felt like air and didn¿t feel like it was braking correctly. Luckily, I had a green light, went through that, kept braking. The car slowed down a little bit but then would not stop completely, surged a little more; I was able to pull into a parking lot; braked again, my car kept going at slow speed; I pulled on my parking brake, nothing happened. Then, I put the car into park, which stopped it. Then I pulled out the key. I called the mechanic I use. He sent a tow truck to me. My car is at the mechanics now.

14 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 02/03/2015

My car is trying to kill me! I was driving at approximately 40 mph, when I started to brake for a stop before turning . The car slowed down, as I held my foot on the brake, but suddenly the car started to accelerate. I already had my foot on the brake, and the brake held, but I had to take the car out of gear, and shut the engine off. The engine was racing at a speed I would estimate at 80 mph. It was a frightning and dangerous experience. I checked to see if a floor mat was pressing on the gas pedal. It was not. The same incident happened on two more occassions. My mechanic has not found the problem. I no longer drive the car.

15 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 08/30/2014

We were stopped behind traffic, and as we slowly started to proceed, the car surged at a high rate of speed, and as the brakes were applied, they either were not working or else it was the abs coming on. This was a dry, sunny day-no moisture on the road-of course that would not have had a bearing on why the car surged/accelerated. Then the car shut itself off completely. We then got it started again, and nothing happened getting it back the aproxx. 4 miles back to home-all was normal after the incident all the way to home, though it has not been driven since. It has been reported to Ford hq's and to the dealership we purchased from.

16 Service Brakes problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

The failure mileage was 68,133 and the current mileage was 68,136.

17 Service Brakes problem of the 2000 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 05/15/2014

This Sable had the stuck throttle problem recall performed in October 2013. Yesterday, a dangerous acceleration condition occurred. While accelerating from a stop light, the car kept accelerating even after taking all pressure from the accelerator pedal. I entered an on ramp and accelerated to join with traffic. Even after completely removing my foot from the pedal the car kept accelerating to over 75 miles an hour. I attempted to brake, but had to shut off the ignition to pull to the side of the road. I restarted the engine and it immediately went to 5500 rpm and started cutting out (misfiring- I assume was caused by a rev limiter). I shut the engine off again. After two more tries starting, and revving to 5500 rpm, it finally started and idled at 800 rpm. While climbing a hill the accelerator stuck again, but at 3000 rpm. I again had to shut off the engine in order to stop. When I restarted, it revved to 3000 rpm. I shut it off again and opened the hood. I manually pulled on the throttle cable to insure it was not applying pressure. I then started the engine and it idled at 800 rpm. The recall was performed in October 2013i have the Sable at a dealer at present to repair the throttle problem. At no time was cruise control engaged. Had my wife been driving, I'm not sure she would not have had an accident. Turning off the ignition was the only way to prevent engine damage and slow the car to avoid a high speed accident. I just received a call from the dealer. The recall (at a different dealer) was performed incorrectly. The clip was installed incorrectly according to the dealer who now installed and completed the recall correctly!.

18 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 11/26/2013

I received a panicked phone call from my 16 year old daughter after a life threatening experience. She was driving at 35 mph when the car began to accelerate on it's own, the engine raced to 4,000 rpm and stayed there, while she frantically pressed the brake. Thankfully she was able to contain control of the vehicle as she pulled off it the road. She immediately turned off the engine, after waiting a few minutes she started the car, again it raced to 4,000 rpm. After trying this multiple times I had the car towed home. A call to Ford verified there has been no recalls or recall work done on this vehicle. I researched this issue online, to my amazement there are many people who have experienced this same issue. In fear for my child and anyone else who might drive this vehicle I have removed it from use, and feel stuck with unsafe vehicle. I am highly disappointed in the lack of response/resolve from the manufacture.

19 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 08/23/2013

Having driven 150 miles or so of highway driving using cruise control, stopping two times to rest, driving approx. 65 - 70 mph. I arrived at waltham on rt. 128 where the traffic was bumper to bumper. I had to keep my foot on the brake until I was at exit 38 or 39. We travelled 5 - 15 mph. After I was in the slow traffic for approx. 20 minutes my car started to lurch forward while gassing up and wanting to jump ahead. My foot was on the brake and I needed to brake even harder to hold onto the force that the car was exerting. I was in bumper to bumper traffic and had kept a distance betweeh myself and the car in front so the small jump did not hit that car before I pushed harder on the brake. The same thing happened again within 5 minutes. Once I arrived in danvers I drove to the dealer to report the problem and they gave me an appointment for wednesday8/28/13. This same problem has been hapeening since I purchased the car in 2011. It self accelerated randomly every 3-4 months, it happened when I had my foot on the brake and I was at a traffic light with my mom in the car. I almost went throught the light from a stopped braked position. The other times were after driving with cruise control which I need. It also happened while braking to get into a parking place.

20 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 08/04/2013

2005 Mercury Sable with only about 60,000 miles car accelerates by itself nearly causing an accident. The acceleration is so strong that it overpowers the brakes and happens while driving at any speed. The only way to stop the car is to shift to neutral and hope for the best. Ford dealership said it was a faulty speed control line which they want nearly $500 to replace.

21 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 05/01/2013

2008 Ford Mercury Sable. Consumer writes in regards to power steering failure. The consumer stated the power steering rack and pump failed. Also, the rear brakes were severely worn and needed to be replaced.

22 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

While driving the vehicle in neighborhood situations or other situations the vehicle accelerates on its own beyond the on the desired speed this causes the car to be difficult to control and very difficult to stop increases the stopping distance needed to avoid an accident to stop at a red light or stop sign it also causes the engine to race even when placed in neutral. Recently why stop at a stop sign the car was pushing it south forward so hard I had a hard time keeping it stop and it actually moved me beyond the stop sign into a oncoming traffic. Extremely dangerous situation there will b fatalities if this is not corrected. This spontaneous acceleration even allows me to drive up hills without having my foot placed on the gas car will not slow down or stop easily. This started in March and it's happening everyday causing wear and tear on the brakes it makes it difficult to steer and I am in fear while driving. I've now started to drive with the brakes on 100 percent of the time in order to keep the car at a controllable speed I've read other complaints on mine similar to this I believe it's a known issue and I'm hoping for a speedy recall by Ford to correct the cause. Since this is a known issue and and I think they linked it to either the accelerator cables or the cruise control . While driving in neighborhood traffic at 25 miles an hour the car can accelerate above 50 very dangerous!!!!!!.

23 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 11/25/2012

Driving at appox 30 mph car began to accelerate to over 60 mph with brakes being fully applied. Slowed car as much as possible before shifting car into park and car skidding off road to a stop. Brakes were smoking from trying to stop car. Car towed to mechanic. Accident happened on rt 16 east of rt 395 in webster MA at 11:30 am.

24 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 11/06/2012

I was driving 25 miles an hour with my children down the road for the start of a long trip and the car accelerated on its own and I had to use my brakes to not hit anything or run a red light. This has been continuous since that day and I can tell it has done damage to my brakes. They will have to be fixed but if this continues I'm affraid there will be an accident.

25 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 10/08/2012

I was driving my car and while I was braking for a stop light I couldn't stop. Something was giving my car gas as I was trying to stop. Ever since then when I drive it my rpm's are high and makes a noise. I called the shop and had my idle air control valve replaced because that's what the automotive place said was wrong. Since then it's been in 3 other times and had the part replaced just in case it was a faulty part. Now the mechanics are baffled as am I. I did research and noticed this was a common complaint on these vehicles. I just took it in again today December 6,2012 and we can't figure out the problem. It's getting worse to where I can't really drive it because when I go to brake it won't stop. I can be at a complete stop and not touch the gas and my car will get up to 45mph without me even touching the gas pedal.

26 Service Brakes problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 11/14/2011

My 2001 Mercury Sable accelerated as I entered the highway. The car would not stop even when I applied the brake. I called 911. The 911 operator suggested that I apply the parking brake which I did. I went about 15 miles riding the shoulder going between 60-70 miles per hour. I eventually exited the highway but could not stop even at the end of the exit ramp. I made a right hand turn. At this point I had reduced my speed to approximately 30 miles per hour. The car eventually landed in a ditch. At that point, I ended my call with 911. I looked to my left and found four men yelling to me to get out of the car. I then learned that the car was on fire. I exited the car. The four men put the fire out with a fire extinguisher. The car was towed to a Mercury dealership where it is documented that it was in fact the speed control cable that caused the car to accelerate. Again, between the 911 call, the information on file with the Mercury dealer and the insurance claim, the cause of the incident is documented.

27 Service Brakes problem of the 2009 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 11/05/2011

The contact owns a 2009 Mercury Sable. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10-20 mph, the front wheels seized, causing the vehicle to halt. The abs and traction control warning lights were illuminated after the failure. The vehicle was shut off and restarted, performing as normal. The failure recurred on an intermittent basis. The vehicle was later taken to the dealer for diagnosis. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 23,000. The current mileage was approximately 37,000. The VIN was unavailable.

28 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 04/29/2011

Left front spring broke gouging an 8 inch tear in tire side wall causing a blowout and damage to anti-lock brake system. Transmission mount was also damaged. If this had happened at highway speeds, loss of steering control and braking could have caused serious injuries. Ford denies any responsibility. I was told that Ford had admitted frequent spring failure on its 1999 to 2001 taurus/sable vehicles and installed guards to protect the tires from blowout. This is second spring failure in 2 years. The first time was the right rear spring broke damaging strut and gouging tire but not causing deflation. Two spring failures on the same vehicle in 2 years indicate that it is not an isolated incident. This is time bomb waiting for someone to get seriously injured.

29 Service Brakes problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 06/02/2010

30 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 04/20/2010

My husband is currently leasing a 2004 Mercury Sable. We've had it since February of 2008, and it's almost paid off. We've noticed the rotors are warped and are causing the car to shake when the brakes are pressed to come to a stop. It does it everytime and it has done it since the second week of April 2010. No parts have been replaced, but when we test drove it before we bought it, it didn't do that at all.

31 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

Over the last few years I have had the problem of when braking the car speeds up and I would have to slame the brakes on so I would not rear end the person in front of me. I kept thinking it was something I did but after seeing report today I sure it was nothing I did. Glad to see that the 2004 Sable was now added. Will be callinf Ford today. . . .

32 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 06/04/2009

When having to make an emergency stop you better pray, this is one of the worst cars I have ever driven for having to make a panic stop. I have had this problem checked by the dealer only to say there is no problem well, yes there is if I am only one of 50 other people who seems to have the same problem. What happened to safety for the people?.

35 Service Brakes problem of the 1999 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 07/20/2005

Total casastropic brake faiure. With my wife driving we encountered a toll plaza on the garden state parkway in new jersey. My wife attemped to slow the car and at that point exclaimed, "I have no brakes". . . . We went though the toll booths and stopped the car about 100 feet away using the emergency/parking brake. I opened the hood, and checked the level of brake fluid, it was full. I got behind the wheel and started the car and put it in drive. I too found the brake pedal on 'on the floor' with no stopping power, even at low crawl/idle speed. I again stopped the car using the only means, the parking brake. We had the car towed using a new jersey authorized tow company to their facilities. They cheked the car, drove it, pulled all four wheels and found no problem. They test drove the car and found they were unable to duplicate my problem, brakes worked normally. We drove home about 150 miles using caution and the brakes worked normally as they are working now. We are two mature, well experienced drivers, and I am in the auto parts/repair business. I know with certainty that I had no brakes at the toll plaza, and my wife confirms that. Brake pedal was on the floor and would not even hold the car still at idle speed. I do not know what went wrong, but it is obviously a very dangerious defect, which can cause many fatalities. There should be redundantcy in the brakke system and this should not have happened, whatever the reason. The car is available for inspection if necessary. I have not decided on a further course of action at this point. Thank you.
