40 Service Brakes problem of the 1999 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 11/10/2003

The brakes on the 1999 Mercury Sable that I purchased 4 years ago have been repaired and/or replaced 4 times! now they are going out again. I have had the rotors turned, and every other thing that has been suggested. When I asked the last mechanic why my brakes keep going out, he stated that this size of Ford was not supplied with an appropriate brake for the size of car. I asked what could be done to remedy the situation, and was informed that I would have to keep replacing the brakes. I think this is a horrible answer. I would like to know what Ford will do for me. I live in oregon and am surrounded by mountains, but I don't dare go over any of the mountain ranges because going downhill and applying the brakes makes the entire car shimmy and it feels like I will lose control of the car and that it won't stop. I have to make weekly trips over the mountains, so I always rent a car. This is getting to be too expensive. I own my car free and clear and would like the brakes to stay fixed once I get them fixed before there is an accident.

42 Service Brakes problem of the 2000 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 06/15/2003

2000 Mercury Sable with adjustable brake and gas pedals was recalled for spacing issue. Told on recall no adjustment needed. Had bad crash. After crash told two more times adjustment not needed. This car has a brake pedal that wobbles side to side 7 mm and a gas pedal that wobbles side to side 1 cm. Odi in washington told me that as brake and gas pedal unit is brought forward the 3 inch distance for a shorter person the side to side wobble of brake pedal becomes worse causing you to hit the gas. They also said adjustment should have been made on this car. Ford refuses to acknowledge problem and to do anything about it. This vehicle is very, very dangerous to drive.

43 Service Brakes problem of the 1997 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 05/31/2003

I have had 5 occurrences of engine surging when slowing down to a light or stop sign and applying the brakes. The surge is so strong that the brakes must be repeatedly pressed down hard to stop and held down to their maximum capability. In 3 of the 5 occurrences in heavy traffic, rear end collisions were avoided by mere inches.

44 Service Brakes problem of the 1997 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 04/15/2003

I should have learned that Sable was a bad car after the engine of my mother's '87 Sable exploded, caught fire and busted through the floor of the car beside the gas pedal and brake (1993). Luckily she was not in the car. The engine had been off and sitting in park for five minutes when this happened. I bought my 97 Sable in 2001. I have never had a car with so many constant problems. I spend about $1200 a year fixing it continually. I'm currently having electrical problems with the radio going out while in reverse or when I press the brake. The window on the passenger side won't move up or down unless the driver and the passenger press the buttons at the same time. The interior light stays on, so we have to unplug the fuse to get it to go off. The seat belt safety light and the window button lights keep clicking on and off. Once again, the steering wheel is hard to turn even though the power steering fluid is at the right level. I have to get the wheels aligned several times a year. The car always makes a humming noise and does not block out the sound of wind. The shoulder straps of seat belts alway lock into place too tight. Name the problem. . . I've probably been through it. I will never buy another Ford/ Mercury again even if it is the #1 selling car.

Two weeks after the front and back brakes had to be replaced. This was at the dealers exspense. I had to have a wheel bearing replaced and now after a year and 1/2 I have to replace the whole motor.
