Mini Cooper owners have reported 24 problems related to car stall (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Mini Cooper based on all problems reported for the Cooper.
Problem 1: clutch/transmission failed at 50,000 just after warranty. Unable to shift on highway, had to stay in low gear. Transmission was replaced. It failed a second time, was replaced at about 80,000. I believe it is failing again as the clutch is slipping in 1st and 2nd gears; Mini Cooper says they note no problem. Problem 2: timing chain. Parked, my car would not start easily; started on 3rd try. My car stalled, stopped on the highway as I was slowing down due to traffic. Restarted and continued. No engine light. Driving to Mini service, car stalled coming in; had to coast in. Found to be timing chain, valvetronic eccentric shaft, perhaps parts falling into oil pan. $2800 in repairs. When I asked about law suits or recalls over the last 3 years because I've had major performance issues, Mini Cooper stated no known suits even though there were. I find that there have been suits, and I "missed the window" for the timing chain.

This would be the second time in which I have had to visit nick alexander imports of downtown los angeles, due to the malfunctioning of my vehicle, specifically the engine. The first time, my car had stalled on the freeway during rush hour time. The service specialist at the dealership attributed my car stalling as a system update issue and found that their was a recall on a vehicle part (a nut that secures the spare tire to the car that could become loose during driving), which he replaced. This second time, which was on January 5th, 2015, my car started to warn me that the "engine oil pressure was too low" and to stop my engine immediately. After a few minutes of parking my car, I noticed that there was a puddle of oil gathering under the upper portion of my vehicle. Once I was able to have my car inspected by the dealer's service specialist, I was notified that there was another recall on a part. This time it was the oil filter housing that cracked because it was "too weak". The splash shield and oil deflector also needed to be replaced. In both incidents I was placed in life threatening situations and can no longer feel confident that my Mini Cooper is safe to drive.

Mini Cooper 2010. Starting/stalling issues. Car doesn't start. It happened a couple of months ago as well. Car has been towed 1 and brought to prestige Mini in NJ (car dealer) for service 3 times. After replacing battery and an engine sensor, the problem persist. The car will be towed again today (Jan 30, 2014) for further costly repairs. I have extended warranty and maintenance on this car but even with that, the cost of repairs and towing are not covered. This is a very poor, unreliable car (Mini Cooper 2010). Responsiveness from prestige Mini is also very poor. Service manager doesn't respond to calls or return voice mails. Very poor service.

The car starts very rough especially in colder weather. I was told by a Mini dealership that could have been due to lack of oil, which is not the case as the oil was just changed. Also when in traffic coming to a stop the car will drop idle and stall out. The car will stall in neutral or with clutch fully pressed in. Researching online and watching some videos, it seems much like the timing tension/chain issues known but not yet having much done with them. It would be nice if BMW/Mini would sort out the issue especially if its a design flaw. Kinda disappointed as its not that old and has fewer then 50k miles on the engine.
The contact owns 2007 Mini Cooper. The contact was driving 70 mph when the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was merged off road and towed to an independent mechanic where it was determined that the timing chain was fractured and caused the engine to fail. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in any recalls. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 85,000.

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Mini Cooper. The contact stated while driving 65 mph the vehicle would down shift and stall. The contact had to pull over to the side of the road and switched the shifter into manual mode to shift the gears up and down. The contact also stated the vehicle battery light illuminated while the vehicle was parked. Engine malfunction due to the cooling system cause smoke from the engine and corrosion on the engine itself. The contact did not take the vehicle to a dealer for a diagnostic test. The failure mileage was 74,000. Jo.

1) automatic transmission busted. Car stalled dangerously on the highway. 2) power steering pump busted. Steering locked dangerously on the road and could not be moved.
I purchased a 2009 Mini Cooper with 16,000 miles in December 2011 through a dealership. In the spring of 2012 the car sat in my driveway overnight. The next morning both windows were completely down. It had rained 5 inches during the night and the pie was an aquarium. I had just had an oil change at a Mini dealership so I called the dealership and was told I had to have it towed to them. The dealer refused to take responsibility for the water damage. The computer was replaced and paid for through a claim on my insurance policy. I told my insurance company to not pay the claim because there was a malfunction of the car. After the computer was replaced the windows again lowered on their own accord but this time they only went down half way. The dealer then said they reinitialized the computer. Since then the car has randomly stalled while driving in houston, merging onto the freeways, while driving in stop and go traffic and while driving at slow speeds. I took the car to another Mini dealer in houston and they kept the car but claimed it never stalled when they drove it. The car continued to stall randomly. Each time the car stalled I took it to the dealer and after numerous times of being told there were no codes shown by reading the fob I quit taking the car to them. The car continued to randomly stall. In March 2014 the car stalled in 4:00pm traffic while I topped an overpass on a Friday. After a wrecker towed the car to a mechanic the diagnosis is a blown head gasket. I have not gotten a second opinion and have not had it fixed yet. This Mini Cooper truly has serious problems and is a hazard to be on the road. I no longer drive the Mini, will never drive another Mini and I no longer have to say a prayer before I get in my car. I hope the NHTSA can provide some assistance with this situation .
The contact owns a 2008 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that when driving approximately 45 mph the vehicle suddenly stalled. The vehicle was towed to a dealer and they advised him that he needed a new engine due to the vaccuum pump failing. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure and current mileages were approximately 64,000.
The contact owns a 2006 Mini Cooper. The contact was driving 15 mph in the rain the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection. The dealer advised that the vehicle hydro-locked and caused the vehicle to stall. The contact did not agree with the dealers diagnosis and the vehicle was not repaired. He then suggested that the dealer further inspect the vehicle when it was discovered that there was a crack in the engine block. The vehicle was not repaired, as the dealer would not repair the vehicle under warranty. The failure mileage was 46,000.
While driving this vehicle it has frequently gone into what dealers and other owners call "limp mode". It basically loses all power while driving. This has happened in the middle of intersections and is entirely unsafe and unacceptable. It would not be acceptable for any car to stall this often let alone a new car. This car is months old and we are having significant safety problems. I have come to find out that the manufacturer is well aware of this and has made several unsuccessful attempts at repairing them although they have never notified any owner or done a formal recall campaign (according to BMW customer service rep. ). This is outrageous considering what is at stake . This is a major mechanical safety problem not a convenience item failure. I encourage everyone who owns this vehicle to address this with your dealers before it starts happening to your vehicle. We only found out that there were things to be done when art dealer looked at our VIN number at our request. No notice was given, and others seem to report the problem continuing after the current fix is applied. Good luck!.

After the 10,000 mile oil change was performed, the vehicle failed to start on the first attempt, it idled rough and sometimes stalled when stopped at a traffic light without warning. The dealership has reprogrammed the computer, drained the fuel and put in other grade of fuel. After numerous attempts, the fuel pump and injectors were replaced but remained to lose fuel pressure overnight.

While driving on a low speed, stop and go traffic in the freeway the car suddenly stalled and I was stopped in the first lane of the freeway. I tried to re-start the engine several times with no sucess, after waiting a few minutes the engine started. I was very lucky that the SUV driving behind was able to stop but not before hitting my bumper. This is the second time it happened, the first time it happened I was in the middle of the street and had the car towed but the engine started as soon as I got to the dealer and they told me that they could only check when the the cars is stalled. I have 2 little kids and I am scared to drive with the car.
-stalling when changing from reverse to drive. Has also stalled once on the interstate. -rpm's keep revving between 3000 & 5000 when I hit 55-60 mph. Once I pass 60 mph the rpm's decrease to a reasonable level. This happens everyday without fail.
