I own a 2004 Mini Cooper. I was driving and lost all power steering almost causing a accident. There is a open recall on this issue. I contacted Mini and they informed me that my vehicle was not included with the recall. I explained that my car was experiencing all the issues addressed in the recall, but they still would not help me out.

I was pulling out of a parking spot at a low speed this morning when I lost the power steering in my 2006 Mini Cooper. The steering wheel was very rigid and it was hard to turn. I tried turning my vehicle off and off again. I also tried turning the steering wheel to loosen it up. Nothing helped the issue. I continued driving for another 30 minutes. At a low speed making sharp turns was very hard, if nearly impossible to stay in my lane. If someone would have been in the other lane I would have been in an accident because I could not make the turn due to the lack of power steering with my vehicle. The steering wheel was very hard to turn all the way. Even at higher speeds (30 to 40 mph) the steering wheel was hard to turn and make it around curves in the road. Starting from a dead stop it was very hard to turn the steering wheel turning left or right. I could barely park my vehicle in the parking spot in the parking lot because the steering wheel was so hard to turn my vehicle at such a low speed. This is the third time the issue has occurred in my vehicle during this month. But the other times the issue has gone away after restarting the vehicle twice. One time was two days ago in the morning. I was pulling out of a parking spot and the steering wheel was tight and hard to turn. The other time was over a week ago and the vehicle was this time restarting the vehicle did not fix the issue.

The contact owns a 2004 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that the vehicle lost power steering and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 15v660000 (steering); however, the dealer refused to perform the repair due to the updated part previously being installed on the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
I have a 2005 Mini Cooper and just lost the power steering. A couple times recently it was hard to steer while parallel parking, but ok on the road. This morning it completely failed on the way to the highway. The wheel was very hard to turn and just managed to get it back to the house, will take it to the dealer on Monday. I see on the internet now that there has been a known issue with the steering pump since 2011 that I did not know about before. Why are owners not notified about this? I could have had a bad accident if the failure had been on the highway.

After driving from san francisco to burlingame, California, I turned off the engine. When I returned 10 minutes later, I lost power steering when I started the car. On that same day, I drove from burlingame back to san francisco. I turned off the engine. 5 minutes later, I lost power steering again when I started the engine. The car is extremely difficult to turn without power steering, especially at low speeds.
Accelerating after being stopped at a red light, lost power steering, smoke came out of hood, engine temperature redlined, and battery light came on.

Lost all power steering.
Sudden loss of power steering when approaching a busy intersection. I barely made it through a few curbs before entering a parking lot. I let the engine cool off for 30 minutes, then the power steering came back on. I decided to go straight to the dealership, about 3 miles highway, and about 1 mile from the dealership I lost the power steering again. Forcing the car through the last few turns, driving slowly, I made it to the dealership. The replacement pump & fan set me back about $1,500.
2004 Mini Cooper occasionally would lose power steering once every couple months after a few years of owning it. Turning off car and starting it back up would always resolve it. While driving down highway at 60mph, lost power steering. Could not pull over immediately. Took exit ramp with a sharp curve, could barely make it around the curve, ended up on the shoulder. Easily could have been an accident, or worse.
While driving at any speed I or my husband have lost power steering in our 2005 Mini Cooper s. This electro-hydraulic power steer pump & fan has been a long standing problem in these Minis. (this has been a complete recall in canada. ) the loss of power steering makes the vehicle very unsafe as it is a sudden onset. It is problematic at slow or fast speeds. I can barely steer the vehicle when this occurs. It is almost impossible to get in/out of our garage or in/out of parking spaces. I have had to find parking in strategic areas most often where I could pull straight in a spot and pull straight out. It is also scary on ramps or interstate as instead of having a responsive sporty car it feels like you are driving a tank that you cannot control. This has happened many times in last 10-12 months. It has become more frequent in last few months. We received a notice for "warranty extension/ repair reimbursement" and called for several months but were told Mini had been unable to get the parts. We called and they now say they have the parts so we drove nearly 1 hour to dealership and now they will not repair it because the part has not failed. They state they drove it and there has been no failure. I would guess it has stopped working while I have been driving it about average 1x/week but more frequent as time progresses. The failure may end up being me. . . In a casket!.
Lost power steering at highway speed due to power steering pump failure. Short circuit or fire melted power steering pump wiring harness. Damage was caused to other portions of electrical wiring harness by fire, resulting in blown fuses. Upon removing key from ignition at roadside, engine kept running until battery was disconnected.
While driving my 04 Mini Cooper at freeway speed, I suddenly lost power steering assist. I can still drive the vehicle, but it is very difficult to turn. I took the vehicle to a local repair shop and was told the new power steering pump alone will cost me over 600 dollars. This does not include the labor and other miscellaneous costs associated with replacing the unit. The repair will cost me in excess of 1000 dollars, which I can not afford at this moment. I understand that multiple complaints relating to the power steering system in the 04 Mini Cooper have been filed. However, I have not seen a recall regarding this issue. I would like to know if you foresee a recall for this issue, and would appreciate any help you can offer. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Lost power steering when driving on the freeway. Feels like the steering locks up but can still steer when using a lot of strength. Since first incident, this has happened again several times. Usually after driving for about five minutes.
I was driving along and lost the power steering. It was very difficult to steer. I got home parked the car and let it go. The next morning it was fine. However, this morning, 6/8/2012, it happened again as I was turning in an intersection. Fortunately for me there weren't many cars on the road, as it was very difficult to turn. If this had happened in even a semi-busy intersection, I would have been in trouble.

Driving off a parking lot about to make a left onto traffic, car suddenly lost power steering, try to correct direction but weight tons to steer into right direction and runs straight into traffic.
The power steering failed on my 2004 Mini Cooper with no notice in city traffic. I was driving all of a sudden lost power steering which nearly caused an accident in heavy traffic. I had to have the power steering pump replaced for $1144. 11 and found it was a very common problem.
While driving at 40 miles per hour the car lost all power steering. The loss of power steering made it extremely difficult to turn the car. The car was more difficult to turn than a car that has no power steering. The power steering went out without any warning. It was working one moment, then after a short driving for a short period it just ceased to work. Checked power steering fluid and the fluid level was ok. After restarting, the power steering worked again. This has happened several times. The power steering will just quit working while driving. You are given no warning that it is no longer working, until you attempt to turn and the car does not respond.
The contact owns a 2003 BMW Mini Cooper. While driving 60 mph, the contact stated that the vehicle suddenly lost all power steering without warning. The dealer advised the contact to bring the vehicle in for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure and the vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileage was 50,512.
I was yielding to make a left turn on green. The car was in neutral. It was a relatively hot day. When I went to go I shifted into gear and immediately found it difficult to turn. As I furthered down the road to my event and was ushered into the parking lot by traffic control, the power steering diminished more and more as I drove on. By time I got to a parking space, I could just barely turn into my spot. A few hours after the event I turned on my car and it drove as normal again. After this powersteering failure I had a power steering fluid flush done. It has been a bit over a year since the first time it happened, but in the past two weeks I've lost my power steering about ten times. It's always when I'm at a slow speed or stopped. Usually shutting the engine on and off again will solve the problem but once it did not. I left the car alone for a few hours and when I went to drive it again it was like normal. It has not always been hot when my power steering fails. I keep my car in a garage so it is seldom baking in the sun. When the power steering goes, it feels as if the car is gripping back and gets progressively worse as I continue to drive. I am not an aggressive driver and I live in a flat area where driving is a simple task.
My 2005 Mini Cooper VIN # [xxx] just lost power steering while driving on the side street, tried to shut off the engine and restart, it works but decided to just park in the garage since I was afraid to get involve in a accident. Then suddenly, a weird sound coming from the engine compartment, left it overnight , next thing my car battery died and could not start the car. Jumped start it let my husband drove it around the block and exactly the same problem occurred. The power steering became stiff and very hard to maneuver even just making a 45 degrees angle and returned to a driving position. I just decided to just park it and wait until a possible recall. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
2004 Mini Cooper 110k miles lost power steering wheel control, very dangerous.
Lost power steering while driving. Significant force was needed to turn the vehicle. The problem lasted for one day. The power steering returned the following day, but the motor stayed on after the car was turned off. The dealership has to replace the motor and the fan.
Suddenly lost power steering while driving and had substantial difficulty turning to get out of traffic. It happened a few times, then took it for repairs. Was told that the pump and fan were bad and that this was a known problem with 2004 Minis.

Hi there is a problem with my Mini Cooper losing power steering , I have lost the power steering few times this week and when I took it to the BMW near my area they told me its a known problem with Mini cars from 2001 to 2005 as the psp ( power steering pump ) on the models have a fault and you may lose the steering power at any time . I almost had 2 accidents because of this week and they are asking my to pay £550 for a new pump . If they have a faulty pump and they now it can risk lives they should recall it or offer to fix this for people who are affected .
For the second time in two months, I lost power steering in my 2005 Mini Cooper. The second time happened as I was driving on interstate-84,outside hartford, in connecticut. Very scary and dangerous! my mechanic says I have a leak in my power steering electric pump, and it needs to be replaced for almost $600 for a pump. He says the Mini Coopers he's worked on all have needed this repair. How can a common power steering problem not be dangerous and warrant a recall?.
12-4-the power steering pump kept running after the car was off and drained the battery in 2 hours. Sept. , 2012: two incidents of power steering loss while driving. First time I had no power steering when I started the car. I drove a short distance, stopped and restarted the car and the power steering worked. Second time I lost power steering briefly while driving at low speed. My mechanic found that the power steering fan had seized and replaced it. When he took it for a test drive, the power steering pump was making a loud noise. He replaced the pump as well and the problems were corrected.
I have lost the power steering on my 2005 Mini Cooper about six times. This has become a big, frustrating, and potentially dangerous problem.
The contact owns a 2005 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that the power assist locked up and he lost power steering functionality. The steering wheel would become extremely stiff, making it difficult to steer the vehicle. Daily driving my 04 Mini Cooper loses power steering intermittently. Sometimes it is just for a minute or two and other times it lasts hours. When I'm driving the car in town I have to pull over immediately as it becomes difficult to steer around sharp corners. If on the freeway it's alarming how difficult it is to steer. I took it to the Mini Cooper dealership and they diagnosed that it needed a new power steering pump. I had it replaced 10/14/2010.
Vehicle lost power steering. I had the power steering assist cooling fan replaced twice and the relay switch for the cooling fan. It worked fine for a time. Now (10,000 miles later) is intermittent.
Lost power steering with burning smell and lots of smoke. As evidenced on the attached document, the engine wiring harness was burnt. The car could have lost all power. The repair bill was $4097. 91. I was without a car for weeks with no loaner car offered. National Mini Cooper denied that this was an issue. There is now a pending recall. The new parts might also need to be replaced. I was driving on the highway when this occurred.
