2 Steering Failed problem of the 2003 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 05/14/2016

While traveling north on us 221 from bent mountain, va to roanoke va my hydralic steering totally failed. As I travelled a short distance my brake light warning lights, abs light, other brake system light, battery light and air bag warning light came on. I looked at the engine temperature guage and the temp was normal. I pulled into a parking lot, raised the hood, checked the fluids in the engine compartment and reentered the car. While sitting in the drivers seat I heard a loud explosion, looked forward and noted thick steam coming from the engine compartment. I turned the engine off, exited the car and when the steam dissipated I noted that the cooling system filling/overflow tank was split in half damaging a protecting cover on the firewall and sprayed a building wall and window with engine coolant 10 feet away in front of the vehicle. I had the car towed to martin's german service in cave spring, va. Because the closest dealership in located in north carolina 150 miles away. Due to service volume they will not be able to evaluate the problem until 24 may 2016.

4 Steering Failed problem of the 2005 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 07/17/2013

The first of multiple steering failures occurred in a parking lot, thankfully. None has yet to happen on interstate or at a deadly rate of speed, which that wouldn't have to be very fast if a child riding on their bike unexpectantly darted in front of you. If the steering malfunctioned at that moment it would be over for the kid. I don't understand how a known, potentially dangerous, issued goes unaddressed. I'm bewildered.

It appears that the steering pump fails when the car warms up. I have noticed many other owners of this make and model making the same complaint in online forums. 18 Steering Failed problem of the 2002 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 02/20/2008

Back in Feb 2008 the steering on my 2002 Mini Cooper just went out with no warning. I was left without power steering in the middle of the 101 freeway, which is very dangerous! I fixed the problem, which was very expensive as it was the entire steering system that failed and filed a complaint with Mini, I never heard back but continued to drive the car. Recently, September 2008 the transmission in that same car needs to be replaced. I have had nothing but major problems with this car and feel it may be a lemon. Mini is unwilling to help me as my car is no longer under warranty. I feel as though these problems could result in serious injury as there is no prior warning and I am concerned for all present and future Mini Cooper drivers.

19 Steering Failed problem of the 2003 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 06/27/2007

The incident occurred back in June 27, 2007. I parked my car and then noticed there was smoke coming from the front of the car. Opened the bonnet and there were flames coming from the underside of the engine. The first attempt at using a fire extinguisher temporarily put out the fire, but it re-ignited and at this point called the fire department to put it out safely. The BMW dealer kept saying there was never a fire, just smoldering. The "smoldering" was the cause of a steering pump failure which overheats, which in turn damaged the loom (harness, or main wiring for the vehicle), which also ruined the battery. The cost was over $1000 to repair the "smoldering" damages. Prior to the steering pump failure, there was no indication that there were steering problems, nor any possible electrical problems. Car mileage was at 65,525 at the time of the incident.

20 Steering Failed problem of the 2002 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 11/21/2005

(1) events leading up to failure - normal wear and tear, car driven 40k+ miles (2) failure & consequence - both bearings in the steering column began to fail. Details not exactly available since I didn't have the opportunity to inspect them, but bearings would grind when turning the steering wheel. Dealer told me that these would not impact driving safety, if not, what is their purpose? (3) corrective action - dealer replaced both bearings since car is still under warranty (50k miles). I inquired with dealer if Mini has either improved the design of the replacement bearings or if the original bearings had been improperly installed. Dealer stated that neither was the case and that it isn't/wouldn't be unusual for steering bearings to fail after 40k miles, which by today's standards is completely false!.
