2 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 04/29/2019

Power steering pump problem for Mini Cooper r50 bought my r50 pre-owned 125000 kms on the odo from a dealership(not a Mini dealership) as a present for my daughter in March 2019. I already knew there was something wrong. Observed a leak in the power steering reservoir. Dealer supposedly fixed the problem by replacing some hoses. After a month, I tried starting the car up and the car would not start. I was lucky to still be at home that time. Recharged the battery and started the car. Turned the engine off and noticed a sound. Traced the sound to the power steering pump not turning off even if the engine is turned off. Disconnected the battery so it will not do a full discharge. Bought it back to the dealership that I purchased it from and they confirmed that the issue was with the ps pump. Did research and found that there was a common issue related to this pump already and BMW has offered extended warranty on the pump and peripherals like hoses and reservoir covering 2003 to 2005 models due to the number of complaints and potential catastrophic issues a failed pump can bring. I asked the local BMW service center if I could avail but they said my VIN was not part of the coverage. I needed the car to work and I wanted it done right so I had them replace the pump. This costed me 1500 cad++ I believe that this should still be covered by the extended warranty because the symptoms are the same and that the pump is confirmed to be an original by the Mini service and may very well still be the same one from the previous models and BMW should own up to this.

I disconnected battery and noticed smoke coming from behind the power steering fluid reservoir. Took veh. To my mechanic on 1/6/16 (veh. Had not been driven since 12/30/15) and he advised me that the steering pump needed replacing, veh. Was at 67,747 miles. Paid $1,154. 17 for repairs. Mechanic advised me to do research as he has heard of this problem with other Mini owners. Researched on internet to find I was not the only 2006 Mini owner to experience this problems. Same problem that occurred to the Mini's that BMW has recalled and extended warranty. Please do what is necessary to have them include 2006 Mini Coopers and fix the problem and/or reimburse those of us who have already paid for repairs. 17 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 07/07/2015

After an hours drive, I was standing outside of the vehicle talking w/ the car off. All of sudden smoke starts pouring out from under the hood. I quickly opened the hood to hear some type of electrical fan/pump sound & smoke coming from the bottom/rear side of the motor. I was able to pull the battery terminal & the noise/smoke stopped. I then searched online & found the known issues of the electrical assisted power steering. I found the fuse for the circuit, a 100 amp fuse hidden on the bottom side of the fuse box that had not popped even though the pump was burning itself up. I had enough tools w/ me to pull the fuse, get the car started & make my way home w/o the power steering assist.

Immediately drove it to my car repair shop. By the time that I had traveled the 2 miles, the engine was heavily smoking. My car repair shop says that the power steering pump electrically malfunctioned - internal failure of the power steering pump.

20 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2003 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 04/09/2015

Our 2003 Mini Cooper has about 120k miles on it. It was completely fine until recently when the power steering pump started whining. Sometimes it completely stopped working and we had no power steering, thankfully this was while the car was parked and not while driving. Turning the wheel is a little harder than usual, and if you turn it too much, the car bogs down and the revs go way down. We've tried flushing and replacing the power steering fluid, but it didn't seem to help. We've even put in some expensive additives that promise to repair the problem and stop the noise, but it doesn't work. We don't feel safe knowing that our power steering may go out at any moment. And we certainly don't appreciate the looks we get when we drive past people.

21 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 03/02/2015

The power steering on my 2006 Mini Cooper spontaneously combusted, melting the power steering harness and draining the battery. The incident went like this: when we returned from an extended vacation, the car wouldn't start because of a dead battery. We jumped started it using jumper cables. When I tried to drive away, there was no power steering. We had the car towed to the Mini dealership, where they discovered that the wiring harness had "melted into the pump. " because of the "known defect" in similar Mini models and the car's low mileage, Mini USA and the dealership replaced the power steering kit and the battery for no charge.

Failure Date: 10/31/2014

The power steering drained the battery and vehicle was unopperable. Parts necessary to replace were: power steering pump power steering pump fan power sterring fluid pen I am filing this complaint because the above parts have been recalled up until 2005. My vehicle is 2006 but I suspect that the older pump has been used on my vehicle because the fan has been working in an odd way ever since I got the car. Mini refused to pay for this part and I am asking you to extend the recall if there are enough people with issues with these parts.

27 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2002 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 05/29/2014

While driving east on sheridan dr. In the town of tonawanda, I experienced a complete failure of the power steering. I wrestled with the car for the rest of the day, and when I got home, I heard that the power steering cooling fan was running continuously, even though the car was shut off in the driveway. I assumed it would stop eventually, but was wrong and returned to a totally dead battery. I called the dealer, towne Mini in williamsville, NY, and was told they were booked to June 17th, but that I could bring it in. Midway between my home and towne, while on the 290, my power steering returned. When I got to towne, they as much as called me a liar, and refused to replace the pump and fan. They did however, find $1300 worth of other work that "needed" to be done to pass nys inspection.

31 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 01/22/2014

Sudden failure of power steering resulting in very high steering effort, traced by dealer to a well-known failure mode in electrohydraulic power steering pump. Pump and associated fan were replaced by dealer under special ("secret") warranty coverage, due to common incidence of this failure. Existence of this special warranty was found only after search and location of many identical failures on the internet. The vehicle battery was found to be completely discharged upon arrival at dealership. Once a shop battery was connected, the pump was found to be running continuously even though the vehicle ignition was in the full off position. Also, the alternator was found to have failed, presumably because of excessive stress imposed by the defective pump on the vehicle electrical system. Cost of alternator replacement was not covered by the manufacturer. This known failure mode is believed to be a significant safety defect. Formal recall of affected vehicles by NHTSA is warranted, since sudden loss of power steering at speed can result in loss of vehicle directional control.

32 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 09/09/2013

Power steering lose the power suddenly, hard to turn or change lane when my wife was driving. Checked this car history, the power steering pump was changed at BMW dealer in 3 year ago. This time the steering lost its power again.

33 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2003 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 08/23/2013

Ehps extended warranty coverage 4/11, I purchased a 2003 Mini Cooper with 88327 miles. 7/2011 the power steering pump began malfunctioning, working intermittently. I filed a complaint with the NHTSA. 5/24/13 I received a letter from Mini USA offering to reimburse the cost of steering pump repairs. They also stated that it would take 4 ¿ 6 weeks for reimbursement. The only other item in the envelope was a change of address card. I called the toll free number and followed the instructions. 5/25/13 I mailed copies of the letter and the receipt for the power steering pump. I called their customer service department on 7/16/13, was put on hold several times, then told they didn't have my receipt. But they had the email address I had hand written on the receipt (corrected, as the email on the receipt had changed. ) when I pointed that out, he put me on hold again, then claimed they didn't have my VIN #. How, since they located me from the VIN #? he insisted I send in the information again, this time with the VIN# noted. I asked why I hadn't received any kind of letter saying my documentation was not complete. He told me the letter was sent the day before my call. 6 weeks after that call, I still have not received any letter from them. 7/16/13 I re- sent all the documentation. On 7/26/13 I again spoke with customer relations. I was told they had received my complete paperwork and all of it was in their system as of 7/24/2013. On 8/23/13 I again called customer relations. After verifying my name, address, email, and VIN # he put me on hold. When he returned, at first tried to say my information was not all in yet. I told him I had spoken with [xxx] who had confirmed the information was all in their system as of July 24th. He gave me further run-around, would not give any indication of when I might expect payment and in general stone walled me. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

34 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2003 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 08/15/2013

Luckily, I was pulling out of a parking space (low speed, high manageability) and my power steering completely went out. It is very difficult to make turns. I stopped at a mechanic shop - fluids and belts were fine. It's the fan/pump that has suddenly quit working.

35 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2003 Mini Cooper

Failure Date: 07/15/2013

The power steering pump, fan, hydraulic fluid pump chf 1 core charge) and hose clamp were replaced by the dealer 5 days earlier. Mini Cooper/BMW sent me a letter for voluntary replacement because my Mini copper 2003 had too many complaints with this issue. The car was running ok except for the power steering after the replacement I only drove about 70 miles because I was off from my school. The incident happened on July 15, 2013 approximately at 3:45 pm. I drove about 30 miles back from work. Parked the car in front of rite aid in rancho palos verdes. When I returned to the car it wouldn't start. Used jump cables for several minutes without success. Went to my mechanic close by. My mechanic came to look at the car, he was able to start the car. I drove back home about 6 miles. When I parked the car the car was very hot and most of the lights in the panel were lighten. I must mention that my car has a new battery and new starter (both were replaced 9 months ago). It seems that the problem is directly related to the electrical system and to the replacement of the part on 7/17/2013.
