Takata recall. The contact owns a 2005 Mini Cooper. Without warning, the steering wheel was tight, extremely difficult to turn, and seized several times. The contact had to use extreme force to maneuver the vehicle each time the failure progressed. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v660000 (steering). The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v205000 (air bags). The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 115,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
The steering became very tight and the steering wheel was very hard to turn. The sudden loss of power steering was very scary at normal street speeds. Shutting off the car and restarting it will return the steering to normal only for a little bit. . . After a few minutes the power steering is gone again.

My daughter had been driving my car with no problems, when she parked to pick me up I put the car in reverse and was barely able to get out of the parking stall the steering was so hard. I then had to drive home using every ounce of strength I had, while making sure not to hit anything. I too have researched this and am truly disappointed with BMW.
Without any warranting the power steering wheel was hard to turn. The car became very difficult to drive I just had diagnosed test four days ago on the car the only problem noted was the threomstat. Know I can not drive the car.

I was driving my 2005 Mini Cooper and when I slowed down to make a left and enter a shopping center, the steering wheel was really hard, there was oncoming traffic and I felt very unsecure and in danger. I took my car to an auto parts shop and checked the power steering fluid and it was ok. I turned the engine on and drove away and the power steering wheel was ok. 3 days later I noticed a buzzing sound from the engine, it would not stop even when I turned the engine off and removed the keys. I took it to the mechanic and I was informed that the power steering pump failed. I am reluctant to enter the freeway, I feel the car might fail and I can get into an accident.
I was leaving my house for work in the morning. As I was backing out of the driveway onto the street, I discovered that the steering wheel was really hard to turn. Consequently I ended up all the way on the other side of the street, and it took great effort to get the car into the direction I intended. Fortunately there wasn't oncoming traffic when I was on the wrong side of the street, otherwise it could be dangerous. . . I stopped on the side of the street, checked that everything else was ok except power steering. Since I only needed to take local streets, I was able to drive to work - it just felt like my very first car that was manual and without power steering!.
Power steering very suddenly failed! nearly caused a serous accident when negociating a roundabout. The car is next to impossible to manoeuver, especially at a dead stop, or rounding corners. Steering is very hard to return to "middle" position.
I was driving on straight road then into curve. . . Noticed the steering was hard to turn. . . . Went in & out for a day then totally out. . . No power steering. . . Have replaced this and now it's out again!!!!.
Driving home from dropping my children off from school and the steering was very hard to turn the wheel. This was as I was going around a corner. It was very difficult to turn the wheel. I was fortunate that I was driving the car and not my teenage son or daughter as they would not have had the strength to avoid an accident. I have done some online research on Mini Cooper forums and discovered that this is a common problem due to failure of a electrical power steering pump. I contacted the local dealer Mini of murray utah to see if there was a safety recall in force and was told there was none. I was also told that this is a well know Mini Cooper issue. The service rep said that he had the same problem with his own vehicle. This a safety hazard and could have cost my the life of my children. This must be recalled.
The steering is so hard and it is difficult to move while driving, I had this problem for last few month but every time when I turn off/on, the problem goes away for a day or two. Since last week, it become permanent. I surf on internet and call Mini customer services, they told me that this issue is under investigation and if I fixed the problem and if there will be a recall, they will cover only parts not labor. This is very serious and unsafe while driving.
