36 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 04/30/2009

Nissan Altima 2003 stalled at red light, without any warning of any sort. Failed to start up again for multiple tries. Team Nissan of marietta ran a diagnostic and confirmed that it was because of a failed crankshaft sensor. I have to pay to replace the sensor though. Surprising even though NHTSA has a safety campaign 03v455000 that documents this problem. Am I being fleeced?.

37 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2008

I have a 2003, Nissan Altima, 3. 5l 6-cylinder. Car has 99k miles. Car recently stalled with no warning after warming up. Car started up right away, so I continued driving. Dealer did a diagnostics and found nothing. So I continued driving and car stalled (again with no warning) on a major interstate while traveling at 65 mph. Dealer now diagnosed issue as a failed camshaft sensor, which is a known issue, but the recall does not apply to my 2003 6-cylinder Altima. Clearly, this is a known issue and the recall must be expanded to cover all Nissan Altimas 2002-2003 (at a minimum). This was an extremely unsafe situation.

38 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2008

2003 Nissan Altima 2. 5. Purchased used on 12/31/06 from Nissan dealer. On multiple occasions the car has stalled either whille driving at low speeds or while in gear while idling in traffic. On 8/14/08 about a mile into a trip, I turned a corner after stopping and the car began to sputter & buck. I could not accelerate and the car died in heavy traffic. I was able to restart the car and get into a parking lot. I was able to get the car started again but it would die if I got under 1500 rpm and would not accelerate past 2000 rpm. I found out that day that there had been a recall on 2003 2. 5 Altima's for the crankshaft sensor, but Nissan says my car was not part of the recall. I think it's very odd that I've had the same issue as described in the recall of other 2003 Altima's but Nissan declines to accept any responsibility for a known dangerous problem.

39 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2008

About 6 months ago we began having problems with the "service engine soon" light coming on in the vehicle. We took it in to our local mechanic several times and he could never find anything wrong. Just recently, we also started having trouble getting the car to start. We had the battery replaced. Last week, we were driving at a low rate of speed in the atm lane at the bank and the car just quit. Also, we stopped to get gas and couldn't get it started again. We took it to the dealer and they replaced the crank angle sensor. From what I have seen, this has been under recall for many of the 2003 2. 5l atlimas, but I was told mine was not under recall. I have also seen articles where other Altima owners are in the same boat as I am - they are having this issue, but are being told it is not under recall. The incident date I listed below is the date that the car stalled twice.

The contact paid to have the crankshaft position sensor replaced two years ago after the ecm was reprogrammed; however, the failure still persists. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall or warranty due to the mileage. The failure mileage was 50,000 and current mileage was 135,000.

42 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2007

Several times over the past two months, my 2003 Nissan Altima 2. 5s has stalled out during operation. Speeds ranged from 5-15 mph during stall. Car also stutters periodically while in operation, but does not stall. Two weeks ago my vehicle stalled while pulling into traffic, almost causing an accident. Now vehicle takes 3-5 minutes to start.

43 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2007

The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Altima. While driving 60 mph, the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The dealer repaired the vehicle according to NHTSA campaign id number 06v242000. The failure recurred and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The dealer stated that an issue that was unrelated to the recall repair was causing the vehicle to stall. No additional repairs were made at that time. On a separate occasion, while driving over 60 mph on the freeway, the vehicle stalled again. The failure still persists. The failure and current mileages were less than 120,000.

44 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2007

My vehicle stalled while I was driving and then lost power several times. Would not start/hard to start. I called Nissan dealer in fremont California and they said I would have to fix it myself or pay them to do it. I found numerous people with the same problem/faulty crankshaft sensor and cam sensor. I spent numerous hours of driving to get parts and spent over 3 hundred dollars on parts, obd computer, service book and not to mention this is a major safety issue. My wife is 9 months pregnant and could have been injured not to mention the stress. Plus down time of not having the car fixed. I am very dissatisfied with Nissans service.

45 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2007

The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Altima. The vehicle stalled, causing another vehicle to crash into contact's vehicle. There were no injuries. The police was not notified. The contact requested the dealer to pay since the failure was due to recall#06v242000 ; however, the dealer advised the contact that she was responsible for cost of the repairs. The vehicle was repaired. The dealer informed her that there was a recall on the crank position sensor and the electronic control module. Also, the dealer stated that the computer could reprogram the failure and repair itself;. However, after diagnosing the vehicle they determined that the computer was defective and must be replaced. The contact was advised to write a letter to Nissan for reimbursement. The failure mileage was 75945, and the current mileage is 77694.

46 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2007

I would be driving the car when it would just stall without warning. Then it wouldn't start to get it to the dealership so I had to call a tow truck. The dealership stated they fixed the recall but the was not related to the recall and that would be additional money. Don't quite know why when the recall states the exact problem I was having.

47 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 11/26/2006

2003 Nissan Altima 2. 5 s. Car stalls while driving on highway. Searched online and found that many, many people have had the same problem with the crankshaft position sensor a circuit malfunction and engine speed input circuit causing this stalling. There's a recall for 2002 models, but not for 2003 and this is dangerous.

48 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2006

The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Altima. While driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle stalled. The contact shifted into neutral, restarted the engine, and drove to her residence. She called the dealer and was informed that the vehicle was not being properly maintained. Later that week, the contact received a recall notice stating that the vehicle's electrical control module (ecm) needed to be reprogrammed. The vehicle was returned to the dealer and they reprogrammed the electrical control module. Immediately following the repair, the vehicle stalled again and the power steering became inoperable. She returned the vehicle to the dealer and they reprogrammed the ecm for the third time due to consistent stalling. Six months later, the stalling recurred. She called the dealer and was informed that the recall was satisfied and they were not liable for further repairs. A diagnostic test was performed at a local repair shop, which revealed that the crank shaft positioning sensor was defective. The mechanic informed her that the crank shaft positioning sensor was supposed to be repaired before reprogramming the ecm. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in any recalls for the crank shaft positioning system. The vehicle has not been repaired. The NHTSA campaign id number was unknown. The current mileage was 125,000 and failure mileage was 62,000. Updated 10-30-08 updated 11/03/08.

49 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2006

I was at a stop light ready to turn left onto another street when suddenly my car stalls out right in the middle of the intersection. It took me a few times to get my car started again and when it fired up again I started driving away but my car would be having a hard time going as if it was starting to bog out. I later did a diagnostics test and got the code p0335 which ended up being the crankshaft position sensor. A few weeks before this happened, my car had the same symptoms but it wasn't as bad. It would just bog down like once in 2 weeks but this was the worst case scenario!.

50 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2006

Car stalls and dies without notice.

51 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2006

My 2003 Nissan Altima stalls at intersections for no apparent reason. I'll come to a stop, and it will die. I'll get the vehicle started, try to go and it will stall. I blocked traffic momentarily, and made some other drivers fairly irritated. The car is going into the shop next week to hopefully correct the problem.

52 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2006

2003 Nissan Altima 2. 5 s is part of the recall campaign surrounding the catalytic pin. My Altima stopped functioning on last year after two weeks of stopping, stalling, smoking, engine knocking, etc. The engine was replaced (supposedly) at the expense of Nissan. The exact same scenario occurred two weeks ago this year and the car again was towed to our local Nissan dealership. This time, they're refusing to make the repairs because the warranty has expired and they're claiming the problems with the engine this time is not related to the catalytic pin. Their diagnosis was "sludge" in the engine, although the oil was changed just 500 miles prior to the engine locking. After reading other people's complaints, I've learned that these Altima's require oil on a weekly basis or this is the result. What kind of car requires oil weekly? as of right now, the car is still at the dealership, which is probably where it will stay because there is no way I can afford to buy a new engine and pay the lender at the same time.

53 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2006

I have 2003 Nissan Altima 2. 5se . It stalls at idle and loses power during driving. It also does not want to start at times just doing sound and after trying about 5 min it's starting( this problem was from time when I bought this brand new car in 2003). Dealer could not find and fix this problem in 2003 when I had warranty. They told me if car starts they can't read a code , because I don't have a "check engine" message. Dealer charged me $300 for tune up. Now when my car start to stalls I went again and still does not have "check engine" message, but they replaced "crankshaft sensor" and looks like it works. Another $300. I check at Nissanclub. Com forum and realize that it's common problem for Nissan Altima. But my model 2003 does not have any recall. Nissan supposed fix this problem because it can hurt some one.

54 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2006

I have an 03 Nissan Altima 2. 5s. This vehicle stalls and surges while driving and will immediately restart. This problem is intermittent and is a well documented problem with the crank position sensor for this car.

55 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2006

2003 Altima 2. 5s events leading up to the failure: the car stalled twice during operation (almost caused 2 accidents) the crank position sensor was replaced (we found some info on the internet that others had issues with this and the car has not stalled since.

56 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2005

I have a 2003 Nissan Altima, I purchased in 03 while driving the vehicle it would just stop. At one point while turning in front of heavy traffic car just quit, and every time I cranked it would quit, which could have caused major accident for me and my 5 year old daughter. I work very far from home and , to get on a busy freeway and car would just quit is not safe. I was under the impression Nissan is a good car and reliable, but they have failed me. I was told by the dealership that due to 69,000 miles it would have problems. I have a friend with same 03 Altima, and over 100,000 miles, she has no problems and can drive out of town. When I am driving up to speed the car would start stalling out of control, and then eventually just quit on me. I can not even drive my car out of town, due to the fact I can not drive in town it may not crank. I noticed the problem when I first got the vehicle, but don davis Nissan said it was a recall on starter. I can say don davis Nissan service dept. Was very helpful, it did take them a few days to correct the problem, but they were very helpful and friendly. I missed many hours at work, and could not work because car was not dependable. The service dept. At don davis Nissan assisted me well, I just received my car back and they said it was the crank shaft sensor inop. They have a recall on the 2002 but not the 2003, good thing I bought extra warranty, but I feel this is a problem and should not have been paid for thru my warranty, I think Nissan should have taken care of it. I guess it's just the look of the vehicle, I will not purchase another Altima again.

57 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2005

My 2003 Nissan Altima stalled in the middle of a busy intersection. I had to have the car towed 85 miles, back to the Nissan dealer in devon, PA. After several attempts to start the car, it finally started, but when I tried to drive it, it had no power when I pressed the accelerator. Also, the car jumped all around, so it was impossible to drive it. I was away on vacation in NJ, so I wasn't even near my home. Dealer determined it was the 'crank sensor', and replaced it, but charged me $180. This should be a recall item!.

58 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2005

While driving at all speeds vehicle just dies. Consumer has not resolved this problem. While driving the vehicle stalls unexpectedly. The vehicle has been taken to the dealer numerous times. The vehicle also hesitates intermittently. The transmission intermittently slips out of gear when the consumer was accelerating from a red light. Update: called the listed number but was told no one live there by that name.

59 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2005

2003 Nissan Altima engine cut off while driving and the consumer was unable to restart the engine. While passing a vehicle on a 2 lane highway the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle's air flow meter was replaced. The consumer had to pay for repairs because the vehicle was no longer under warranty.

60 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2005

We purchased a 2003 Nissan Altima in January of 2005. After having the car approximately 2 months the car begin stalling while driving and it would happen periodically. We took the car back to the dealership and they stated that they couldn't find anything wrong with the car, this happen several times and with much boldness. We took the car back and demanded that the problem be found. Because someone almost hit us and my children could have been seriously injured or killed due to neglect of Nissan/datsun. They initially tried to give us the run around and stated that they couldn't find any problems, then after the tech, drove the car for approximately 40 miles the car stalled and they detected that it was a sensor and we had to pay for this. I know that Nissan should be held responsible for this, because this is a manufacture defect. I believe that this is happening more than reported, I just found this site and I know that it would be a disservice to other people that might have this defect and have not had symptoms yet of this possibly fatal defect. Thank god we were not harmed and no other drivers.

61 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2004

While driving 60 mph vehicle stalled.

62 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2003

Action number rq06001 manufacturer: Nissan north America I have experienced all four problems with my 2003 Altima that Nissan north America cited as reasons for the recall of the defective part. Service records document that the problem that my car would not crank was reported as early as 23,619 miles when I had to have my car towed in to the service department. Since it was an ongoing problem, other records since that time reveal the same complaint. Each time the service department reported that they could not locate the reason for the problem. The car was taken in recently because it began cutting off abruptly while traveling - an extremely dangerous situation. Now that the warranty period is over, with over 60,000 miles, the service department notified me that the problem was in the crank position sensors and they both would have to be replaced. They also informed me that due to the mileage, it was my expense to have the problem corrected. I called Nissan consumer affairs about the situation reminding them that the problem began before the warranty period was over and that I had read their information reported to NHTSA. I was told that my 2003 Altima was not among those produced June 1, 2001 through June 30, 2002 and they would not pay to have the car repaired. Obviously, my 2003 Nissan Altima is also one in which defective crank sensors were installed as evidenced by the on-going problems and the conclusive diagnosis given me by the service department. The cessation of the engine without warning while traveling the interstate "could" have cost my life. Just as my car had a defective part creating these problems, there may be others like mine that should have been included in the recall. I notified the dealership on yesterday to repair my vehicle. I was told that this would involve replacing the two crank position sensors at a cost of $115 for the sensors and $225 for labor ($340) plus tax. I assume the old parts will be available.

63 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2003

I got a 2003 Nissan Altima on 9/1/03. On the 10/10/03 it started stalling. I took it into the dealership. They said it was a damaged spark plug. The same thing happened the next day. I took it back. A butterfly valve had come loose and was lost somewhere in the engine. I was informed of two recalls, and I needed a new engine. Nissan gave me a rental for 5 days, but I had to pay for anymore. It took 7 days to deliver the engine. I can not afford to rent a car, so I had to borrow my sister's car to get work. Once it came one of the parts was wrong. They had problems with the catalogs, and the part was on a national back order. They would not agree to a rental. I called Nissan myself. After waiting for 24 hours while they reviewed my file I was denied a rental because they didn't know how long I would be. The lady was very rude. I asked for a supervisor. I was told it would take 24-48 hours for them to return my call. I waited a week and called back. He told me that they should be calling me that day or the next. I have still never heard from them, and it is December 4 2003. I am just getting the run around from the Nissan company. I have been getting phone calls from Nissan telling me the part will be in a certain week, but still no part. On November 19th the dealership gave me a car, and then on November 20th they got Nissan to give me a rental. So between October 25th until November 19th I have had to borrow a car from my sister. Both of us commute, her to school, and me to work. I work the graveyard shift, so there is no public transportation. I am a nurse and am on call somedays. It makes it difficult to get there in a hurry, when you don't have a car. I have also had to miss out on the overtime hours, not to mention staff meetings. I have never been treated as rudely by a company as Nissan has treated me. I have been getting nothing but fake promises. I will never buy another Nissan, nor will anyone I know!.

64 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2003

While driving vehicle would stall at any speed, causing consumer to lose control, and pull off the road. Driver made contact with dealership on seven separate occasions, but problem still occurs. Consumer noted that since purchase there has been continuous problems with the vehicle, especially after a part in the engine was replaced. On morning while driving, the accelerator pedal stopped working. Consumer was traveling next to the carpool lane hoping no one would hit the vehicle.

65 Car Stall problem
