Front passenger seat air bag sensors faulty, light indicates air bag off (console amber), also flashing red light in instrument cluster, it's a safety issue, no recalls yet but in the forums it's a lot of people complaining about it, also the whole seat had to be replaced, the cost it's more than $3,000. 00.
About 2 weeks ago I noticed that my air bag dash light was blinking. So I took my car into the shop and had it diagnosed for $125 (of course) then the service adviser states that a sensor in my passenger seat is not working and it cannot determine if an adult or a child is sitting in the passenger chair. In order for me to fix it I'd have to change out the whole chair assembly. I said why do I have to pay for this, this is a safety issue, so if the air bags don't deploy in an accident why should I be liable when it's a safety issue. This should be a safety recall and not the owners responsibility. I maintenance my vehicle every time on the money and to have a simple sensor cost almost $3,000 I don't think so.
Passenger seat cushion sensor has malfunctioned, disarming the entire airbag system. This seat cushion sensor has been replaced 3 years ago by owner, and now a second oem sensor has failed. No injury has occurred but would hate to find out what death or injury could be prevented if Nissan or NHTSA would recall this item in 2009 Nissan Altima with only 62000miles.
The sensor in the front passenger seat of my 2009 Nissan Altima suddenly stopped working and is no longer able to tell if someone is sitting in the seat to turn on the airbag.
The passenger side light indicating the airbag is turned off remains on even when someone is sitting in the passenger seat. Then the airbag sensor light started flashing. I have to replace the passenger seat to fix.
Takata recall. Dealership says entire seat needs to be replaced to correct passenger airbag sensor issue. Will cost over $1,400 to replace due to shortage in replacement seats. Will only warranty for 1 year if replaced.
First issue was with passenger seat airbag sensor. My wife or other passenger would be sitting in passenger seat and the sensor in the seat would not work and therefore the passenger airbag was disabled, putting passenger safety at risk. Second issue. Had to replace tire pressure monitoring sensor due to leaking tire pressure. Have had to replace 2 out of 4 so far in the last year. Causes low tire pressure and unsafe driving condition.
I haven't been happy since I had my car, which I purchased in 2012 with 45, 0000 miles at the time of purchase. I complained about so many things every other month I was going to get it checked. When you hit a bump you can here something loose underneath the front end of course I seemed like the only crazy one hearing the noise. Then when I took it back again I was told the sway bar arms need to be replaced when this was a problem when I first purchased the car they just ignored now my warranty is expired . The steering lock was one issue and I was told through the dealership that there was not a recall on my car. Until I contacted you guys I was told that there was a recall. Now when I drive the car at a certain speed it starts wining and slows down to 60 mph with the gas pedal to the floor I am furious because I was traveling on the interstate 4 different times going out of town and this happened. Someone could have ran into the back of me. I changed out the air filter thinking that may have been the problem but no it continued. Also sometimes the car wouldn't start I was told by Nissan I needed a new battery and I had it checked by someone else they said the battery was fine. The passenger sensor light stays on when an adult is sitting there. Now my sister 2013 Nissan Altima transmission is gone and she only had the car almost two years and we were complaining about the issue with the car going a certain speed and making noise. I went to Nissan and they told me my car can be put on the machine, but I would have to pay to have it checked. Too many people having the same problems with these cars.
I own 2009 Altima coupe se. The passenger airbag sensor does not work properly. Sometimes something as small as an ipad will activate the airbag. As where other times my 125 wife will have it turn off. Something needs to be done as I am seeing that a multitude of people are having this issue.
My 2009 Nissan Altima coup v6 edition frequently turns off the passenger front airbag when someone is sitting in the seat. The person weighs over 125 lbs and should be enough for the seat to sense an adult in it. For some reason it intermittently will flash the dash board light indicating that the airbag will not go off during an accident because the occupant is too light. I have taken in into the dealer on 2 separate occasions and they have told me the sensor and airbag unit are functioning, and there is nothing that can fix the problem.
Oct 2012: passenger air bag off symbol illuminated with adult sitting in the seat. Dealer diagnosis: no codes in system found. Dealer recalibrated the air bag. Customer cost $100 Dec 2013: passenger air bag off symbol illuminated and dashboard air bag symbol flashing. Dealer diagnosed that passenger side seat cushion sensor needed replacing. Customer cost $130 for diagnosis, $399 for sensor. May 2014: body shops refuse to handle air bag issues and was referred back to a Nissan dealer. Seat cushion assembly was now over $700 because the entire seat cushion needed replacing. Nissan no longer replaces just the sensor. A complaint was filed with Nissan asking for financial assistance with the replacement part . Nissan required another diagnosis to be within a 3 month period. July 2014: Nissan refused to assist with the cost because it was no longer under warranty.
I own a 2009 Nissan Altima. Almost always when the passenger rides, the airbag off light turns on, the passenger is not protected. I went to the dealer, mossy Nissan in oceanside, and the conclusion is that all Nissan Altimas have this problem -- this model car needs to be recalled so that sensitive enough sensors are installed to protect passengers - the female adult passenger is 110 lbs and not protected, that's a risk Nissan corporation doesn't seem to care about.
Passengers seat air bag sensor not working. When my wife who weighs 113 lbs sits in the passenger seat the air bag is off when some one who weighs 150 or more sits there air bag is on.
Traveling 65 mph on the freeway, my daughter noticed her mom's "passenger airbag off" light was on. This happened before, Nissan-USA checked the system at mossy Nissan and stated the system is working properly. Nissan-USA did not use weights to check the weight sensor, they drove around with a 125 lb passenger and concluded the airbag system is ok. Nissan countered my safety suggestions below stating it would be very difficult to improve the airbag system due to NHTSA, and they would also need to crash test the car. Mossy Nissan is knew my wife is ~117 lbs and did not disclose to me the airbag safety deficiency prior to the sale. Mossy Nissan stated that because this system passed the NHTSA, they are not liable for anything. I counter that based on Nissan's position, I am holding Nissan corporation, mossy Nissan, and NHTSA liable for any injuries which result from injury from an accident and also pain and suffering and any additional distress, especially if the airbag or other safety system fails. The Nissan airbag system can lead to a fatality even with an adult 150+ lbs. Just prior to an accident, the drive may become rough and the passenger can shift around. For a 150+ lb adult to defeat the airbag system, momentarily lift 1/2 your weight off the seat, as can occur due to movement just prior to an accident. The passenger airbag off light will turn on. Immediately drop your weight back into the seat, the passenger airbag system will remain off for 10 seconds, the passenger airbag won't deploy in the crash. Nhtsa should require Nissan to recall this vehicle and lower the weight sensor to 80 lbs - and also program the flash memory so that the once the seatbelt is fastened, the passenger weight is determined and doesn't change (a passenger doesn't lose 40 lbs just because the road is bumpy) - sensors should mainly determine passenger position, not weight. A better system would have weight sensors in the back seat floor.
There is a problem with the 2009 Nissan Altima in which the passenger airbag turns off (indicated by a passenger airbag off light), while an adult passenger over 100 lbs is correctly seated on the passenger side, sitting square with seatbelts fastened. If an accident occurred while the airbag is turned off, the passenger is not protected in Nissan Altimas. At the least, an override on or off is needed because the weight sensor doesn't work correctly on the Nissan Altima, based on the first month of driving on my 2009 Nissan Altima, with a 108 pound passenger. I purchased a 2009 Nissan Altima from mossy Nissan oceanside last month. Today on 2 separate occasions the passenger airbag turned off. The first time it turned off, I checked the manual which stated that the passenger needs to sit correctly for the airbag to turn on. We believe she was, however her feet were on the right side rather than the center of the floor. Later this evening, we made certain the passenger was sitting correctly when the passenger airbag off light turn on again. In both cases, within 10 minutes the airbag off light then turned off. If an accident occurs during the airbag failure period above, a fatality can easily occur.
