1 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2006 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 09/14/2009

Car has a consistent sulfur/rotten eggs smell for as long as I have owned the vehicle. Problem occurs at least 8 out of 10 times driving the vehicle. Smell is disgusting and I am wondering if this is causing me and my passengers health problems. Dealer and Nissan consumer affairs refuse to recognize nor fix the problem after 2 prolonged visits and weeks of phone calls after filing complaint with Nissan.

4 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 10/20/2008

After driving at highway speeds for 20 minutes, got off highway and pulled into gas station. After putting the vehicle in park, the car shut off. After coming out of the store, it failed to start. Went back to the car later, and it started right up. Took to mechanic, blamed the service light on the anti-theft system. Came on again 2-3 weeks later, took to a different mechanic who said it was the ignition coils. Quoted me $1300 to replace all 6. Opted not to perform repair at that time. 2 weeks later, the coil failed and caused the car to run very rough, as well as consume large amounts of gas. Replaced broken coil and O2 sensor. Car continues to get far below average mpg. About 15 mpg highway driving.

5 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 08/07/2008

I had this 1999 Nissan Maxima since year 2000. The following expenses I incur was replacing 6 ignition coils at the Nissan dealer costing over $700. 00 where they advise only one coil was causing the problem. Recently after taking my car in for diagnostic because the service engine light came on, the check and replaced the egr valve three time(cost over $1100. 00 for the first replacement), replaced the starter, fuel filter. Now the same light is on right now. No one seem to know if this is a manufacture defect (yes , I believe) or what is the problems with missed reading test results. What's next replace the car? need help before I done replace this car or someone gets inquire because of dealer, manufacturer and technicians don't know the resolution.

6 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2001 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 02/25/2008

In Feb. 2008, my Maxima 2001, with 55000 miles, stalled out at a stop light--it would start up again but then stalled out when I tried to go. It was towed to the dealership, and the iac valve and the ecm were both replaced for about $1700. Then, on oct. 20, 2008, 8 months later with the mileage just under 60,000 miles, the same thing happened but it was preceded by a smell of burning rubber. It was towed to the dealership and I was told that the engine harness needed to be replaced ($2000 parts and labor) and the iac valve and the ecm again needed to replaced (another $1700). At first, the dealer said that the iac valve and ecm were covered under the new parts warranty, but then I was told that if it was the engine harness that was responsible for the failure of the iac valve and the ecm, they were not under warranty and I'd have to pay the total bill of $3700! I started a case file with Nissan consumer affairs and was told by a regional specialist that Nissan could do nothing for me since the parts were not under warranty. From the internet (and not from the dealership), I learned that the ecm is covered under the epa specified major emission control components warranty for 8 years/80,000 miles but Nissan has declined my claim, saying that the iac valve caused the failure of the ecm that first time in Feb. 2008, so the ecm is not covered by that warranty. There is no language in the epa warranty that states that as an exclusion and there is no language in Nissan's own new parts warranty that states that as an exclusion (I. E. , a new part is not covered by the warranty if its failure is caused by another non-warranted part). I have read online many, many similar complaints about the failure of these parts. This seems to be a very dangerous design defect with the potential to cause serious harm. Both times I narrowly avoided accidents. Nissan hasn't been willing to honor the warranties. I have yet to authorize the repairs and I am not sure what to do next.

7 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2007 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 09/19/2007

On Wednesday September 19, 2007 I took my car to the dealership because the check engine light was on. As the service advisor checked me in I made him aware that my service engine light was on and my car was periodically stalling. Instead of thoroughly checking my car out, being that I explained that it wasn't running right, the advisor said there were a few transmission codes but they just reset the computer. I continue to drive my car and it still periodically stalled but on Friday September 28, 2007 my car began stalling and jerking so I took it back to the dealership. The technician ran a diagnostic test and the same codes from the prior weeks visit came up. They said they would need to keep my car for extensive work. However, they could not start this process until Wednesday October 3, 2007, I explained to the advisor that I drove 80 miles a day to my job and would need a loaner vehicle. He said they would not provide me with a loaner vehicle because I did not purchase my car directly through them. The advisor then said the earliest they could get my car in on Monday October 1, 2007. I stressed to the advisor that it was still three days away and I had to drive the car 80 miles a day. He just told me not to drive the car too much. The following Monday October 1, 2007 as I left my home I could not even make it up the street in my subdivision, my car cut off, I made several attempts to start it again because I had a school bus blocked. I finally got it to the dealership. Needless to say my transmission was bad; they kept my car four days. My car has been in and out of the shop since then and it still is not right. One visit they said that I had a problem with my exhaust system so they kept it two more days. The dealership would not call in a special technician in to found out what was wrong with my car so I contacted consumer affairs. As I stated I drive 80 miles everyday and I do not feel safe driving my car.

8 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 06/17/2007

Engine coils and oxygen sensors have been needed to be be replaced on many occasions since I've owned this vehicle. When 2 of the coils needed to be replaced, the engine ran extremely rough (from both misfires) causing a huge reduction in engine speed and the inability to pass or accelerate safely onto the highway. This happened so abruptly on one occasion, that I was nearly run off the road. I am the original owner (purchased Aug 1999) and have had to replace 4 of the 6 engine coils and all 4 of my oxygen sensors (each on different dates). I only have 116k miles on the vehicle.

9 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Nissan Maxima

10 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2004 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 06/13/2006

Good morning, I currently own 2004 Maxima & have been experiencing major problems with this car for about 2-3 years. My major problem at first was my transmission. Apparently the dealership states I will need a new transmission which is absurd since the car is not even 10 yrs old. I knew there was a problem when the car started jerking on its own. At times it jerks real hard when shifting from 1st to 2nd and it is quite scary & embarrassing. When the problem started, I have two friends who were owners of a Nissan Maxima as well and they were experiencing the same jerking transmission problems. They eventually traded their cars but I not wanted to go through the whole process of financing a car, I figured I'll fix the problem. The transmission is one problem but why every couple of months there is other problems as well. For example I last year I had to change my catalytic converter, my mounts, and my routers. Now what has made me at my ends with this car is what happened last month (June 2009). While driving, there was a loud sound, I opened the hood of the car and right buy the engine, and there were flames. The fire dept was called along with the police. As I submit my complaint now my car is still at the shop. This has become a frustrated and very expensive issue that I have been facing. Honestly I have spent about 5k's or more on this car, not considering that I'm still financing as well. How is it that, I have done my research and there are many others out there who have the same issue. Nissan needs to take full responsibility and it is not a coincidence also. I have documents and emails from others who are also experiencing the same issue (over 300 complaints since 2006). Pls if anything, there needs to be an investigation, many ppl are suffering and losing $ as well.

11 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 05/01/2006

I believe, the engine light problem was there since I bought it because after driving couple of months (1000-1500 miles) the light appeared. First, it will come and go after approx 61,000 miles it became permanent. In 2008 I took the vehicle to Nissan dealership bill kay at downers grove IL paid approx. $2,000 for fixing the problem but after some time it again came up and started flashing. In 2010 again I took it to maineke auto work shop and got the ignition coils changed, silencer/exhaust changed and paid almost $1,200 but again the same problem of engine light came back. The problom goes on and on, recently I got the new battery and took it to the gerald Nissan at ogden Ave. Naperville, IL they said they changed the coils but light came back the very next day. I paid $800. Now they are again mentioning there is a problem with sensor. Please advise and help me with this problem. These cars are suppose to be sturdy and not have such problem so frequently and I am sick and tired of spending money on this car.

17 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 2000 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 05/01/2000

Transmission failure: bought vehicle in April of '99. Transmission began to slip at 15k. Reman trans under warranty. 2nd slip occurred at 30k under warranty. Denied vehicle trade. Reman trans. 3rd occurrence at 45k, replaced trans w/ oem under warranty. Denied trade. Transmission failure at high temp for long drives (2 hr incline) and had to wait for the trans to cool before it drove again, one occurrence at 55k, oil ok. Still intermittent power loss/slippage. Dealership unable to recreate problem. Denied trade. Ignition coils: knocking, bad gas mileage, and power loss due to ignition coil failure at 70k. Was told I needed to replace all coils rather than the one that was damaged and all spark plugs. Alternator went out after repair. Replaced all coils, plugs and alternator ($1500). Still have power loss & occasional knocking. No help from Nissan. Denied trade. Suspension: constant knocking of tire area at 60k. All 4 hubs damaged and replaced at 65k. All 4 struts leaking and had to be replaced also at 65k. No help from Nissan. Nissan quote $3000. Opted outside repair for $1000, no more problems. Emissions: more loss of power (3000rpm+) and bad gas mileage. Probably linked to ignition coil problem. Problem has been diagnosed to 1 of 4 catalytic converter sensor failures. 130k. No help from Nissan. $3000+. Fan: loud noise when a/c is on. One fan defective at 80k. Fan blade rubbing on metal frame. Replaced fan $200. No help from Nissan. Conclusion: I wanted to have my vehicle considered a lemon and traded. I had no complaint with Nissan or the Maxima line. I only had a problem with just my car. Just wanted a new Maxima. 5 lemon attempts with Nissan, rejected each time. Dismissed under strict lemon law stipulation regarding repair statute of limitations and guidelines of repair. Vehicle has been nothing but trouble. Properly maintained and have maintenance receipts and dates of each occurrence listed above.

18 Engine Exhaust System problem of the 1999 Nissan Maxima

Failure Date: 05/01/1999

The first complaint is with my car pulling to the left since I got it. I brought it back to the dealer at least three times for this but it still does it. The guy told me that it was because the roads in new jersey are angled so thats what caused it and did nothing about it. The second complaint I also brought back all the times with the pulling of my car . The guy said it was because it was new and it will go away, but about nine months later it is still there but not as foul as before.
