Tuesday, Dec. 22 my 2016 Nissan Maxima just shut off while driving in hayward, CA near industrial rd. Called triple aaa who jumped the battery and a short distance later on hwy 880 the car shut off again, I was towed off the freeway by caltrans. On January 4, it shut off again while on a city streets. A CO-workers husband replaced the battery and I was able to safely drive it home. Jan. 30 a mechanic looked at ran diagnostics and found nothing wrong. I drove it without issue several times from el cerrito to san rafael the week. On Feb. 5 while driving on the streets in oakland, the car just shut off. While waiting for aaa it started again by the time aaa arrived it had stopped again. Luckily this hasn't caused me to have an accident. It is extremely unsafe. And while I see there are several complaints about this issue reported here the service department at the dealership only wants to charge me $190 to diagnostics when they know this is an issue. This issue is a ticking time bomb for a serious accident occurs and Nissan needs to address as soon as possible.

My 2004 Nissan Maxima shuts down while running, causing the transmission to default into 5th gear, (2-4 gears effectively disappear) and the all electricity , radio, a/c, and power steering to shut down. On straight highways one can keep driving by shifting into neutral immediately, and trying to restart the engine with the key. Usually it restarts and runs but in a deficient power mode. The vdc light appears, letting you know that the transmission will be stuck in 5th gear, with the option of manually starting in 1st gear. Either shifting from 1st to automatic or manually to another gear, defaults the car into gear 5. The car is drive-able in this condition, but one has at stoplights, to immediately shift into neutral, and manually with foot pedal, keep the rpms above 1100. Fortunately I was driving straight. If turning a corner, and not very strong, I'd have no control over my car. Without power steering working the wheel is very hard to turn. Finally one day, the car would not start on cold start. It would occasionally almost fire, make some revolutions, but then would only turn on power of the starter. The first mechanic gave an estimate of $3600 to replace the timing chain the problem originally did not exist when engine was cold, but after engine warms up, at the first time the rpm's fall below 1000, the engine shuts off. . . Usually waiting for a cold engine again, causes the car to start up in original form.

This is reference to two situation concerning Nissan recalls. In 2014 I took my car to sansone Nissan dealer on rt 1, NJ to take care of the airbag recall issue NHTSA ref#15v287000. My airbag light was not on when I took it to the dealer, after I came home a week later the airbag light came on. I don't think the dealer took care of the recall issue, if they did my airbag light would not be on. I would like Nissan to give authorization to the dealer to correct this problem. My second issue was on Jan 2016, I was driving to work, all of a sudden the car shut off on me, the brake lock up and all I could do was stair to the side of the road. . I was lucky that there wasn't any oncoming traffic. I had to call the tow truck to have my car towed but before the tow truck came I tried starting the car again and it started. I was a few minutes from home, so I drove back home and I had my local mechanic picked it up and did a diagnosis on it. He said it was the crank position sensor, I purchased it and he installed it. The car started working a little better but my service engine soon warning light is still on. I did a little investigation and found out that there was a recall for engine and engine cooling recall #03v455000. I read it and found that the consequence on the recall is the exact same thing that happen to me. Again sansone dealer on rt. 1 in NJ is claiming that they took care of this issue but I was never told that this was a recall by Nissan. I wanted Nissan to correct this problem based on the fix under NHTSA ref# 03v455000. I've been taking car of all the maintenance on my car since I purchased it from Nissan but I feel that Nissan is responsible for these two issue, since it was defect in design on their end.

My family and I were driving south bound on the new jersey turnpike at 75 mph and the car shutdown, it would not accelerate and lost power. Luckily we were in the right lane and I acted quickly to turn on the hazards and get off the highway on to the shoulder to avoid a serious accident. This car only has ~16000 miles as well as all of its scheduled maintenance is up to date. After getting it towed to the Nissan dealership they informed us that it was a problem with the mass air flow sensor and that even though the car was within the warranty period the warranty would not cover it as they found a leaf in the sensor. We have no way to verify that there was a leaf in the sensor and the car is kept in a garage and/or driveway nowhere near a tree. We wanted to report this incident so that if more incidents like this occur maybe a recall is warranted as Nissan's engineering of the vehicles could be at fault. How could a leaf in get in there? if a leaf does get in why would that corrode the part?.

Driving home on freeway my Nissan engine shuts off while driving in excess of 65mph and being that its a manual transmission it tries to start from rolling but jerks real hard like the brakes are locked up and ive almost went off the road 10 times. Ive tried changing the crankshaft position sensor but cannot locate it and all area autozones don't know where it is either. From what ive got my car has already been part of the sensor recall but has been failing for the last 2 1/2 years and recently blew a coil pack from the damaged sensor. Also the car wont start on one quick turn in a millisecond like it used to, it takes about 5 seconds of turning over to start everytime now.
2003 Nissan Maxima cam sensor failure. Car shut down in traffic.
My 2003 Nissan Maxima shuts off without any warning I had my grandbaby in the car with me and traffic was moving pretty fast, after sitting for about 5mins it started back up. I took it to my mechanic and told that the cam shaft sensor needed to be replaced. He also told me that it was a recall on this, so I took it to the Nissan dealer and they said it is not for my VIN number. I have 174,000 mileage.
The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Maxima. While driving 35 mph the contact noticed that the vehicle had suddenly shut off without warning. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic where the contact was informed that the cam shaft sensor needed to be replaced. There were no prior warnings. The vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileages were 174000.
I was in the freeway with my baby on 405, car suddenly started feeling weird, 3 warning light came on, my car shut down in middle of freeway , I have to put my car on park and put emergency lights on. Almost caused and accident with my baby. Car will not start. I was told by mechanic this is a fault camshaft. This same problem was on a recall for 2003 Nissan Maxima, Nissan refuses to take responsibility.
The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Maxima. While driving approximately 35 mph and proceeding to come to a complete stop, the engine shut off. The vehicle restarted after several attempts. There were no warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The failure recurred on a separate occasion and the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The failure was related to the cam sensor and the vehicle was repaired. The failure and current mileages were 69,000.
My car was having shifting issues with the transmission. The car shut off while I was driving and when I restarted it, it stayed in 5th gear. I took the car to the local dealership where they did something and resolved the problem but didn't inform me what it was. I then had the same issue about 3 months later I took the car to the same dealership they said they test drove my car but the mileage was only 1 mile different from when I dropped it off. So I know that was a lie. I was told they were unable to duplicate the problem. My vehicle was under warranty. I pleaded with the service manager telling him that I drive the car everyday and I have the problems all the time. He game me a Smart ass answer like " when it does it again stop by and pick me up and show me what it is doing". Now 4 months later my warranty is over and my transmission is shot. They are now saying they are going to do nothing to help me out with this issue. I have to pay $3600 to fix the problem.
The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Maxima. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle shut off and the steering locked without warning. The dealer stated that the cam and crank sensors caused the failure. As of December 18, 2007, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. The current and failure mileages were 80,000. Updated 01/17/08. Updated.
The contact owns a 2001 Nissan Maxima. At 55 mph the vehicle suddenly shut off. The vehicle was towed to a local mechanic, who diagnosed the failure as the mass air flow sensor. The replacement part was ordered from the dealer, but the new sensor also failed. The diagnostic test showed that the sensor needed to be reprogrammed. The contact towed the vehicle to the dealer, who stated that the engine motor mounts short-circuited the aac which caused it to blow. Once the aac failed the electric shock blew out the emc. In order to properly repair the vehicle the contact must pay almost $3,000. The contact stated that when the key was put in the ignition and the accelerator pedal depressed the vehicle operated normally. However, as soon as the pedal was released the car shut off again. The current and failure mileages were 100,000.
