Nissan Pathfinder owners have reported 1,088 problems related to power train (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Nissan Pathfinder based on all problems reported for the Pathfinder.
Transmission malfunction/failure caused loss of all power and had to coast over 3 lanes to the only available shoulder on the left side of the express lanes. This in and of itself could have been catastrophic due to the speed of the vehicles on the express lanes. Turns out there's a failure point on the flexplate and Nissan techs are aware of the issue. Nissan as a whole should replace them if this is the result.

The disabled vehicle when delivered by flatbed car hauler unit to the nearest dealership, petro Nissan, 47 miles from the breakdown site would not move at highway speed but only jerked/bucked and crept along at little more than a fast walk. This condition was last experienced when the vehicle had been on a remote undulating interstate for about 2 hours. The check engine light had reappeared after being recently reset and the engine revving and loss of ground speed started causally then increased in frequency and intensity until totally failing to the point of forcing me to creep with emergency flashers in mode on the shoulder to reach an exit two miles ahead. The high rpm revving coupled with the ground speed loss condition initial stages occurred each of the two prior days. Two Nissan na dealerships in those two days had performed diagnostics and service. On each prior day the check engine light, the high revving engine rpm, and the ground speed loss occurred. On each day a potentially serious safety issue arose. Initially an attempt to match speed and merge with traffic at an onramp and again when (using cruise control) during which the vehicle system attempted an automatic acceleration to maintain speed on rolling hills. Both conditions forced me to the shoulder to avoid a potential accident from immediate and drastic ground speed loss and engine revving at or above 4500 rpm after each of these incidents a Nissan na dealership was consulted and services were performed. In each case I postulated to the service advisors that the transmission sounded/felt like it was slipping on acceleration when the vehicle/ transmission had heated up from extended driving. Both days service advisors checked for diagnostic codes of transmission issues but never mentioned emission issues aside from mass air flow sensor or abs sensors apparently either not seeing or not looking beyond transmission related codes. The first dealer, illini Nissan, ran diagnostics on 1/6/25,.

I was driving and all of a sudden my car flipped into neutral mid drive. I couldn’t put it in park. I couldn’t put it in drive and I couldn’t put it in reverse. I had to sit on the road with my foot on the pedal until someone could tow it. My kids and were stuck in the dark on dangerous corner of a windy road. This is a serious safety deficit. We are still covered under warranty. We got it home and turned it off. Then we turned the car back on and we were able to put it in gear and park it, but the check engine light stayed on. The next day when I turned it on to take it to the dealership, the check engine light was off. The technician took it for a test drive and it did the same thing to him. The technician can’t figure out what is wrong or why it’s doing what it is doing, but that it is unsafe to drive.

The contact owns a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder. The contact stated the vehicle failed to start. There were no warning lights illuminated prior to the failure. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer for a tune up where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. There was previously an unknown transmission issue. The transmission was replaced after eight months the failure recurred. The manufacturer was contacted where a complaint was registered. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.
The check engine light turned on and took it to dealership on 12/14/24 and they stated that throttle chamber may have issues. Used scanner and code p0101- mass air flow sensor circuit was read on scanner. Vehicle struggles to get air flow into engine causes speed to struggle when trying to accelerate.

Hard time shifting from low gear to high gear when accelerating. Would shudder. In cruise control at 55 or higher would surge faster, slower. Finally, in cruise control, at 70 mph lost high gear, downshifted, rpms went very high. We slowed to a stop pulled over, turned car off. Restarted. No forward gears, only reverse.

Car was functioning fine and then suddenly stopped one day as I was entering expressway, car just stopped and had to tow to Nissan dealer. I was told alternator is not functioning and when doing systems check cvt/transmission alert was noted and said I need new transmission. In my search I see 2016 Pathfinders were included in a lawsuit. This was not brought to my attention and I am wondering if my cvt should be replaced by Nissan at no cost to me. My care has less than 120k miles and is less than 10yrs old. Link to Nissan dealers report: [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

I was driving vehicle and was at light to enter freeway went to accelerate and nothing happened but car would rev normal in park pulled over in traffic and almost got in a wreck with family in side is very unsafe.
We have just under 80,000 miles on this & the transmission has started slipping. Pulled into an intersection after slowing (we were on the right-of-way), turned right to go up a hill & transmission hesitated. Car shuddered, then tranny kicked in & up the hill we went. We've noticed similar issues when moving from a 'slowing' motion to accelerating - highway lane changes when passing, etc. The hill thing was a stunner.
$4000 worth of work. 4 visits to a local shop. 3 visits to the Nissan dealership, who claims to have replaced cylinders every time. My engine violently shakes even worse. Has cut off midst driving with no power to crank again. 4 batteries & 4 alternator replacements. Barely press on gas pedal and it shakes the whole car, then smells like something rotting.
The contact owns a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder. The contact stated while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle shutters and shakes when attempt to make a turn left or right turn . The vehicle was driving to a independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission needs to replaced . The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified on the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 111,000.
Good morning I am sure you are well aware of the cvt transmission problems with the Nissan Pathfinder 2014. . Well I just join the group of Nissan [xxx] drivers . I had my cvt transmission replaced and I am still getting the judder as they call it each time I accelerate. Mileage was roughly 143k when I had notice these judder problems . Went to aamco had a new cvt transmission put in drive roughly 500 miles since then . I still experience those juddering incidents of the cvt transmission. What can be done ? will go back to aamco but other then this , any recalls any liability on Nissan itself for manufacturing bad components or a bad cvt transmission? as for the airbag indicator light flashing on the dash . That happen after my cvt was replaced . Any ideas please ? would appreciate any help advice here . Thank you . My 2022 Pathfinder had 34,725 miles on it when I left for the grocery store, on the way while driving on the highway I got an alert on my dash saying "check shift level position", which that seemed normal & fine, and vehicle was still driving normally at this point. That alert then went away as I was driving a moment or two later ( however I did get a photo of it). A very few moments later, I was driving along and the vehicle suddenly shifted into n(eutral)! I pulled over, shifted into park, turned off the car, restarted it, and the check engine light was on. However I shifted the car into d(rive) and proceeded to try to get back home, car seemed to be driving normally, but then no, it began again, the car suddenly shifted into n again as I was driving. I tried pulling over and restarting the vehicle again, but the same thing happened again. I decided to have my passenger take a video of our drive home so that it could be easily shown to the dealer what was happening, that way there would be no question of if the dealer could replicate the issue or not. During our aprox 6:07 minute trip home, it happened another 5 times! once I was home I found that I had a email from mynissan saying that there may possibly be an issue with my vehicle emmisions system. My husband has a code reader and he plugged into it and it showed a code of p0742, which is ("torque converter clutch circuit stuck on"). So the next morning 10/01/24 I called my dealership and spoke to service and let them know what was going on and that it needed to come in, I explained however that I would not be loaded my 3 kids in the car and making that hour + trip up there driving the car as this is a huge safety hazard. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership. The next day the dealer did reach out to me and tell me they plugged into it, saw the p0742 code, but "didn't know what to do with that", so they were calling the Nissan "techline".
While driving my son to school, traffic began slowing and then accelerating in front of me. I was driving approximately 40 mph when I took my foot off the accelerator to slow down. Before I had a chance to press the brake, the vehicle shifted into neutral on it own without the shift level being touch and a steady malfunction indicator light came on. At this point the traffic began speeding up and I was unable to accelerate until I manually shifted the vehicle back into drive.
See attached document for complaint.
Driving at highway speed, the vehicle suddenly lost all forward traction. No reaction to the accelerator anymore besides engine revving up. Once vehicle came to a stop, it had to be pushed off the road, impacting traffic on the road, putting my safety and that of others at risk. Technician pulled a “p17f0 - cvt jutter” code. Dealership advised the vehicle needs a new transmission. Vehicle is less than 10 years old, less than 120,000 miles. Dealership advised no warranty coverage for the issue and a cost of $9,000 to replace cvt transmission. No warning or warning lights prior to incident. Regular maintenance at dealership (brand new purchase, one owner). Nissan is aware of the cvt transmission issues but offering no assistance. (case # 52368136 from call with Nissan customer care).
Transmission shudders at 20 miles per hour. It can sometimes buck and jerk pretty hard.
I engage the parking botton on shifter, & the vehicle still rolled away from me after I got out of vehicle.

In my 2014 Nissan Pathfinder when I drive between the speeds of 25-40 mph my SUV shudder and shakes violently like my car is going to break in half, it's not safe to drive anymore,.
Cvt transmission issues. Juddering, lost sprrd downshift jerks. Going 70 on highway it lost speed jerked me around like I am getting hit. Couldn't even go up ramp on highway. Its hard to believe that NHTSA dose not have a ban on these vehicals. There are many complaints and Nissan letters within Nissan that have been issued out to dealships ect. No to mention the law suits. Nhtsa would be the first I would think to post and force these off of the road. Insted people like me are just forced to junk them and write them off. Or spend your life savings on trans replacement.
The contact owns a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and it was determined that the vehicle needed an oil change, and that the check engine warning light would be deactivated. The oil change was performed; however, the check engine warning light remained illuminated. While driving at various speeds, the vehicle failed to accelerate as needed while depressing the accelerator pedal. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the continuously variable transmission (cvt) had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
It begins shaking, jolting and shuddering while driving; started off happening at take off; then progressed to anytime speed was under 35mph; now, it does it often throughout all speeds. Nissan states it needs a new transmission which was quoted to cost $6,600+tax. The vehicle trade-in value is only $5,000ish prior to these symptoms. Vehicle has less than 117,500 miles and all maintenance and fluids have been routinely changed throughout vehicle's lifespan. This cvt issue seems to be ongoing therefore Nissan and other makes should not be allowed to put these into vehicles that are so costly and these transmissions begin to give problems while vehicles are still under warranty. Need assistance in fixing the costly transmission and Nissan should have a discount on this faulty transmissions that they knew had issues. No warning lamps or messages given; symptoms were found when taken in at 117,000 miles and stated transmission needs to be replaced. Warning lamps and signals should have been given to owner to prevent the damage done to transmission. Warning lamps do not show anything wrong with vehicle; however, the jolting, jumping and sputtering is very dangerous during driving and may cause accidents in braking, acceleration and/or heavy traffic flow.
1 the cvt transmission failed, it is available, but it has to be towed. 2 while we drove down the expressway the transmission began to slip and skip gears in mid traffic at about 60 mph and at one point it stops pulling and I pull off the road and stopped but then it would not engage in gear (pull off). 3 when I got it to move, I went straight to the Nissan dealer, and they told me it needed a transmission and brake pads and rotors for $ 8000. 00 dollars. They didn't check the car because I watched them and they never raised the car or jack it up even to check the brakes. 4 no one but supposedly Nissan but that never happen 5 no warnings, this appeared / happen on Aug. 05, 2024.
I bought a used 2014 nnissan Pathfinder in August 2024. 1 week later, my transmission is going. The car bucks and does not work if idling for a short time. 2 local Nissan dealers stated that the transmission replacement is no longer available. So I am currently not able to use the vehicle and do not want to pay 8,000 for it to be fixed. If this was a recall and a known issue with this type of transmission. What can I do at this point.
Vehicle transfer case had complete failure at 25,800 miles of street/highway use. My family had to pull to the shoulder of [xxx] in maryland due to uncertain loud noises. The issue was reported to local Nissan dealer (where I purchased this vehicle new) and scheduled for repairs. The service manager stated that the $5,357 failure was 'likely' due to low tire tread. The tires were factory original at 25,800 miles, had been rotated per service schedule and proper air pressure maintained. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 2023 Nissan Pathfinder. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph and depressing the brake pedal, the engine revved up to 2,000 rpms. The contact stated that the failure had also occurred upon releasing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that the rpms would increase, and the vehicle would accelerate unintendedly. No warning light was illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to two dealers and was advised by both dealers that the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and referred the contact back to the dealers. The failure mileage was approximately 14,700.

The mechanic replaced the battery. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed and making a u-turn, the vehicle went into limp mode. The contact was able to pull into a nearby aaa parking lot, where the vehicle was jumpstarted. The contact was able to drive to the residence. The contact stated that the failure recurred while driving and turning. The contact was able to pull into a parking lot, where the vehicle was jumpstarted. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with cvt judder. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was no longer covered under TSB number: ntb17-039n. The failure mileage was unknown.
Car started to shutter, doing 55 mph and stop pulling. . All lights were flashing then shut down, was able to coast into some business parking lot. Had to get towed to shop where was told needed alternator, replaced that and replaced battery…car would start but put in gear and same thing happened shut down and didn’t get but a couple of miles from shop. . Still no fix. Contacted a Nissan dealership was told maybe transmission. Told no recalls, which it should be.
My car powers off as I am driving it. The brakes work but nothing else. The dials go crazy and all the warning lights on my car turn on with all the other lights remaining off. I’m not sure what component stopped working when it shuts off but I would be okay with it being inspected. My safety was put at risk because I could no longer drive the car and the gas pedal doesn’t work so I don’t gain any speed leaving me stranded on the street having to pull over which could lead to an accident. The problem has been confirmed by an independent service dealer. The first sign I know the problem is gonna happen when driving is when I turn on the car and the emergency brake light turns on and the battery light.
My car jolts/jerks in park as soon as it’s crunk up. Have been to the shop 9 times since June. Last 4 times has been Nissan dealership, had $3000+ worth of work/replacement done. My engine is still continuing to do the same thing. Nissan said past 2 times that it was ignition coils, because they replace plug wires, but they’ve been replaced 3 times now and still the same issue ? sounds more like cvt or timing chain issue. No codes were thrown past 2 times either.
The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact became aware of transmission failure during the gears shifting. Car shakes. Engine light on. Diagnostic performed by ase certified mechanic revealing transmission code, cvt shutter which has a voluntary recall for this particular year. When I contacted the st. Petersburg crown Nissan regarding this needed repair, I was told my vehicle would not qualify for the voluntary recall.
