Underhood Wiring Problems of Nissan Pathfinder

The contact owns a 2007 Nissan Pathfinder. While the vehicle was parked, the contact heard the alarm sound and noticed smoke under the hood. There were no warning lights illuminated prior to the failure. The fire department extinguished the fire and filed a report. The manufacturer inspected the vehicle, but did not provide an explanation as to what caused the failure. The insurance company stated that the wiring harness caught fire. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The hood and wiring harness were burned, but the vehicle is salvageable. The failure and current mileages were 45,000. Updated 8/28/09 updated 09/03/09.

While consumer's daughter was traveling on highway she heard a noise. Black smoke and flames were coming from steering column. Dealership was aware of problem.

My vehicle a Nissan Pathfinder was parked in my driveway after being driven approx 1 hour . Approx 1 hour later after retuning home the parked vehicle started to burn up. The fire depatment reported that there might have been an electrical fire inside of the engine. If the car would have been in my garage my home would have been destroyed or worst. I find it very upsetting that the car was not in operation at the time of the fire. I don't know if this has happened in the past to other Pathfinders but I certainly would like to warn anyone operating this type of vehicle not to feel that because they have shut the car off that all is well. I still can't accept what happened to me and what might have destroyed my life if I had left the car in the garage. I am also curious to know if this has been a problem that you have been aware of.

Electrical arcing beneath hood at rf fender, along wiring harness from abs actuator to fuse block. Wiring insulation etc ignited while vehicle parked causing localised damage.
