1 Underhood Wiring problem of the 2005 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 02/03/2008

On February 3, 2008 after returning home from a trip to the grocery store, I parked my car as I normally would and engaged the emergency parking brake. After going in the house, I noticed the smell of smoke coming from under my carport. When opening the door, I found my car engulfed in white smoke coming from under the hood, the vehicle and smoke had completely filled the interior of the vehicle. I immediately got my children out of the house and called 911; the fire department came and tried to investigate what was the cause of the smoke to no avail. In trying to prevent the car from possibly sparking the house it took four fireman to push my car in neutral to the outside of my carport. My interior was smoked and my carpet was charred under my seat and under my childrens car seat turns out my emergency brake cable melted along with the interior plastic, creating a spark that ignited the carpet and melted the plastic molding in my car. Mr. Sanders stated that the car was fixable however he had never seen anything like this before the fix he stated was to replace the emergency parking brake cable (two hour fix) however he could not tell us why this happened. Mr. Sanders stated that he would not replace the carpet nor get the interior cleaned that I had to deal with Nissan corporate. Melissa is now stating that Nissan is willing to fix the parking brake cable, replace the scorched carpet, detail the interior and carpet and fix the harness and pay for our rental car. Melissa could not explain to my husband the function of the harness and how it relates to the possible fire, she stated that possibly the parking brake and harness were misrouted and connected thus creating a spark that melted the cable, molding, and carpet. She stated she is not sure and could not go into it technically; she also stated that she was unable to provide us with any written documentation because it is a Nissan internal document.

3 Underhood Wiring problem of the 2000 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 07/10/2003

I have a 2000 Nissan Quest, I have had to replace the connector to the passenger side headlight 3x's since Aug of 2002. The connecto burns out. The most recent incident was 07/10/03. My husband replaced the connector and it burnt out by the next day 07/11/03. My concern is an electical fire.

4 Underhood Wiring problem of the 1999 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 06/13/2003

Low quality materials causing a fire hazard that were noticed by inspecting equipment. The passenger headlight malfunctioned and the electrical system went out and came back on including all dash electrical equipment while the van was in motion. The right headlight was not operating every time it was needed. I purchased the van and I noticed the headlight was coming on and going off. I inspected the headlight assembly and noticed that the connector that snaps the harness to the bulb had melted wires. The connector has three wires (low beam positive, high beam positive, and ground. ) the connector is made of molded plastic and the wires travel through the connector and clip on the bulb assembly. The van is 3 years old and the center ground wire has melted the connectors so bad that is has come into contact with the other positive leads casing a system short and a fire hazard. I inspected the other headlight wiring harness and found the center ground to be badly melted as well. The vehicle is a 1999 Nissan Quest and it only has 32,000 miles. The load on the harness and wires is too much. The headlights were factory installed and were never replaced so this is a problem form the design. I have removed the defective connector and replaced it with a better designed one from another vehicle manufacturer. The defective connector is available for inspection. *nolm.

5 Underhood Wiring problem of the 2001 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 06/26/2002

My son was driving the vehicle and ran into the back of a boat trailer. Speed at impact was approximately 30mph. The vehicle he hit did not stop, we suspect he didn't even realize he had been hit and probably thought he just hit a bump in the road or something. The vehicle suffered front end damage typical of a 30mph crash. What is very upsetting is that the vehicle caught on fire and burnt up. Despite the fact the several truck drivers stopped to assist and emptied 4 extinguishers on the fire, it wasn't enough to put it out. On top of all of that neither airbag, driver side or passenger side did not deploy despite a direct front on impact. Needless to say I am very upset with the manufacturer. A 30mph collision should not result in a totaled vehicle.

6 Underhood Wiring problem of the 2001 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 04/16/2002

Vehicle hit a deer at 65 mph and caught on fire. Manufacturer was notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

7 Underhood Wiring problem of the 1996 Nissan Quest

Failure Date: 04/18/2001

On 4/18/01, noticed one headlamp not lit. On opening the hood, discovered both main grounding wires were "exploded" from inside their casings. Individual strands were in some cases still intact while others were completely separated. Wires nearby were also severed by what appears to be a major electrical surge. An additional small secondary grounding wire was separated from its mount. Reconnecting that wire "fixed" the nonfunctioning headlight. Next day, both headlights were out. On opening the hood, discovered both main grounding wires completely separated, secondary grounding wire separated, headlamp wiring connectors "burned" and all connecting wires (3 per) separated. Electrical "scarring" evident on nearby metal and plastic inside the engine compartment. Wire and plastic fragments found under and around affected areas. Windshield washer filler cap and funnel "scarred". All other mechanical and electrical functions appear to operate normally, including turn indicators and parking lights. Has this type of problem occurred elsewhere? is there remedy through Nissan even after warranty is expired? copying to Nissan after submitting to NHTSA. Thank you in advance for listening and investigating. Sincerely, kevin shute.
