1 Emission Control problem of the 1996 Nissan Sentra

Failure Date: 01/30/2008

Insufficient headrest foam coverage. Foam degrades or self moves out of position to reveal internal metal frame which runs across entire headrest at point of head impact. Part does not seem serviceable for repair, and should be replaced by manufacturer with updated version. Check engine light and airbag light are both triggered too easily by too many sensors, so vehicle is constantly in shop with no trouble found. Seems like it was designed by an overly-worried car manufacturer, or for the purposes of making owners feel the car needs to be replaced. It also greatly increases the likely hood of failing an annual inspection. The safety issue stems from all the blinking lights on the dash which are very distractive, especially at night, and usually completely unnecessary. In 1996, there was a recall for insufficient brake light illumination on the Sentra model. Nissan's fix for this was a brighter bulb. Since my car was bought used, and the prior owner did not upgrade to the new bulbs, and there is no listing for the replacement bulbs, owner's may not know how to upgrade their brake lights. Nissan dealers do not seem to know what bulb to replace it with for better illumination. This is an obvious safety issue, as there are many 1996 Nissan Sentras on the road today.

2 Emission Control problem of the 2002 Nissan Sentra

Failure Date: 09/12/2005

2002 Nissan Sentra. The contact stated vehicle stopped while driving at 45 mph. The contact then coasted to the side of the road and vehicle would not restart. The vehicle was towed to the dealership; they state the ecm module failed. The vehicle has not been repaired. It is still at the dealership. The contact was trying to get Nissan to fix the vehicle under recall campaign 03v477000. If the ecm failed the ignition module will not be replaced. The problem with the vehicle occurred on September 12, 2005.

3 Emission Control problem of the 2001 Nissan Sentra

Failure Date: 01/31/2005

On June 24,2004 I had a crankshaft position sensor and emc foam removal recalls done on my 2001 Nissan Sentra. My vehicle has totally shut down with out any noise or warning while driving at least 4 times since December 2004. There were no accidents or injuries involved. I had taken my Sentra to a Nissan dealer for a diagnostic check on Jan. 31,2005 and they told me that the electronic control module did not show any codes and that it was a loose battery cable so they replaced it. Less than 24 hours later the vehicle shut down again while driving and was taken back to the dealer ASAP. The service rep then told me he put his best technician to work on my vehicle and he found the crankshaft possition sensor was bad and it was replaced, but when I question the rep about the emc codes again he told me that he did not know what the problem was because my Sentra was the first vehicle to do this with a recalled sensor. I am very concerned about the emc and this recalled sensor because this is a very serious safety issue. Nothing was done by the Nissan dealer to assure me that my vehicle will not do this again.

4 Emission Control problem of the 2001 Nissan Sentra

Failure Date: 08/15/2004

In less than a year the car has had the service engine soon light go off 7 times. They have replaced 3 sensors (1 at my expense for ~$300), then the computer on the car that totally died. After that it was the exahust system and they replaced the catalytic converter and othe part. Now for the seventh time in less than a year the service engine soon light went off again and this time it is the O2 sensor (obd ii code p0160). This sensors are supposed to last up to 100000 miles and the dealer is asking me to pay another $300 to have it replaced.

5 Emission Control problem of the 2001 Nissan Sentra

Failure Date: 08/02/2004

While driving check engine light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. Consumer drove the vehicle to dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that ecm modular needed to be replaced.

6 Emission Control problem of the 2002 Nissan Sentra

Failure Date: 07/13/2004

Vehicle stalled while driving. Vehicle was then towed to the dealership, who performed the ecm material 03v477000 repairs. Vehicle stalled 20 times since recall repairs were performed. Dealership was unable to remedy the problem. Dealership indicated that they done all they could do, but were unable to find the cause of stalling.

7 Emission Control problem of the 2000 Nissan Sentra

Failure Date: 07/08/2004

At about 65,000-70,000 miles the service engine light came on. At the same time my right front wheel began making noise. I took my car in and found out that I needed to replace the hub assembly. Not knowing that it had been recalled for the hub assembly, I ended up paying over $500 for the parts and labor. About 15,000 miles later my car lost all power while driving on the freeway. After paying to have the crank position sensor replaced I received a recall notice warning of the problem. I took my car to the dealer and they performed the recall work. The service light is still on and my car often performs poorly and loses power when trying to accelerate. I am unable to pass smog in CA because the light is on. All of these problems are not coincedental. Nissan has manufactured a faulty system and they need to own up and repair it.

8 Emission Control problem of the 2000 Nissan Sentra

Failure Date: 07/07/2004

This car has never once passed an emission test on the first try. As of July 2004 the service engine soon light came on every now and then. I took the car for it's emission test and it failed! the error code was p1491 (bypass valve/cut valve). After spending $500, I thought the car was fixed. I took the car to the emissions facility and it passed. I drove out of the parking lot and the service engine soon light came back on and has stayed on constantly since then. Now I'm a due for another emission test and once again it fails! same error code. Clearly there is a defect. Something must be done to rectify the situation.

9 Emission Control problem of the 2004 Nissan Sentra

Failure Date: 05/01/2004

2004 Nissan Sentra 1. Purchased new on 3/13/2004. Mileage 2060 - jersey city, service engine soon light came on, brought to dealer, ecm reprogrammed, dealer did not know what caused the light to come on. Erratic/rough idling still persists, vehicle shut off once while refueling. Mileage, approx. 4725 - jersey city, service engine soon light came on and went off intermittently, dealer refused to repair due to "no hard code is stored. " erratic/rough idling persists. Vehicle shut off second time while parked. Began lemon law proceedings in new jersey. Mileage, 5370 - myrtle beach, service engine soon light is on. Car is bucking in 1st gear (automatic), "mapp" gas or rotten egg smell (possibly excess sulfur) coming from exhaust. Error code p0171/p0174, air flow meter replaced with no further failures. Mileage, 5637 - charlotte, service engine soon light is on. Vehicle now bucks at high speeds, especially when letting up on the accelerator. After prolonged highway driving, very erratic idle, at times almost reaching 0 rpms while parked. Dealer reset ecm, could not detect any failures. Arranged to change fuel pump but finally fuel pump was not changed. Vehicle driven back to new jersey with same failures as listed above. Since charlotte, nc service engine soon light has come on two times, and has gone away just as fast. I do not have much time to keep my only car (and new car) in and out of the dealership, since they refuse to provide a rental. My recommendation: want to stay alive, stay away from Nissan cars and trucks.

10 Emission Control problem of the 2000 Nissan Sentra

Failure Date: 02/22/2004

While driving, engine check light came on. After taking it to the dealer I was told the mass flow/ air flow sensor was bad and was due to me using an non-oem airfilter. I sent the airfilter back to purolator, who responded that their product met all oem requirements. I looked up the recall information and found out there was a recall for the "service engine light" coming on due to other issues. I took it back to the dealer, who never told me abou the recall, and they completed the work. I have yet to have the mass flow/ air flow sensor replaced due to cost $700 as well as my feeling is that this is a defective product. I have looked through the NHTSA web site and found several other mass flow sensor problems that have yet to be address for this model year car. I have contacted Nissan and they told me the dealer knows what is best for my vehicle and they would not do anything!.

11 Emission Control problem of the 2000 Nissan Sentra

Failure Date: 02/09/2004

Check engine light repeatedly on since 2002 through every recall has been fixed and now a mass air flow sensor needs to be replaced for a lot of money with no proof this was not the original problem while the car was under warranty. Have brought it in again for this light back in Jan. And it is still not fixed because at first they said it was the recall and that didn't work again and then they forgot to order the part while my car was there. Nissan consumer affairs was also rude and not helpful with this.

12 Emission Control problem of the 2000 Nissan Sentra

2000 Nissan Sentra with multiple problems. Consumer states that she would like compensation for all the money she has had to put out for repairs. Such as new af meter, replaced mass air flow, replaced battery, replaced clutch twice due to an oil leak/flywheel and more. The consumer stated the entire electrical system failed, a new trunk lock was needed, the rear engine seal was leaking oil on the clutch. The engine light illuminated and the drivers side window was inoperative. The regulator and radiator were replaced.
