Car has been making tapping/knocking/squealing noise since about 20,000 miles. Dealership was notified, as well as Nissan consumer affairs. (audio was taken of noise). Car was taken to shop. Mechanics could not "replicate sound" that my car was making, even though I had shown mechanics proof, and they heard car making noise at idle and when car was revved up. Mechanic was instructed to take car home for a period of 7 days. He could not "replicate sound" that my car was making. My car had been in and out of the shop (for the same issue) at least 6 times between 2016-2017. And the issue still remained. Now (40,000+ miles since noise first started), I have noticed a significant reduction in horsepower, coupled with the squealing/tapping/knocking noise, that is progressively getting louder. I once again have contacted Nissan consumer affairs, who instructed me to take it to a different Nissan repair facility and front the $99. 00 diagnostic fee to have my vehicle diagnosed. I am now without a vehicle, and I still am in the dark as to what is going on with my car. The sound that my car makes occurs when my car is moving, idling, in gear, or in park. I have notified the dealership and consumer affairs of this ongoing issue, and feel that they just do not want to look into this, even though there is an issue with my car.

The contact owns a 2002 Nissan Sentra. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, there was a knocking noise coming from the engine. The contact noticed the vehicle was smoking and oil was leaking from the vehicle. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer, who advised that the pre-catalytic converter and the engine would need to be replaced. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign id number: 03v084000 (engine and engine cooling) however, the vehicle was not included in the recall campaign. The vehicle was scheduled for repairs. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 119,500.

The contact owns a 2002 Nissan Sentra. The contact stated that the vehicle was consuming oil excessively and he could he hear a loud knocking noise. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the catalytic converter had allowed debris to enter the pistons and as a result, the engine would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 118,000 and the current mileage was 121,000.
2010 Nissan Sentra. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle engine noises. The consumer stated while backing up or turning to the right, there was a noise coming from the rear side of the vehicle. The dealer replaced both front strut bearings and the right mount on 02/07/12/. Even after the parts were replaced, there was still a knocking noise coming from the same place occasionally. Also, when the ignition was turned on and the vehicle reached 25 mph, the consumer heard a buzzing sound for a few seconds. The consumer believed it was coming from the lower part of the engine.

The Nissan 2003 Sentra was bought from a private dealer in 2009 and was driven almost a year until it started consuming excessive amounts of oil. It also had a loud knocking noise when running. It was serviced twice until it was discovered there was a recall on this car by Nissan for the exact symptoms it was having. The recall states that certain engine operating conditions may cause damage to the pre-catalyst. Material from inside a damaged pre-catalyst could enter the engine and result in increased oil consumption. If the engine oil level is not checked on a periodic basis and drops below the low level engine damage may occur which could result in a fire. This is a concern since this is my son's car and I do not want him in a car that could cause him harm. I have been in contact with Nissan and they say there are no open recalls on this car and there is nothing they will do. The recall campaign was dated 7/29/2003. I have looked into this matter and many owners of Sentra's and altima's were effected by this recall and apparently the fix for the recall was a band- aid for a major defect. The recall was to reprogram the emc card the problem is the damage was already done to the engine and a new motor and pre-catalytic converter was the fix for this defect.

I leased a Sentra se-r in Nov 2002. Since getting the vehicle I have had numerous problems. The car randomly does not start. It sounds like the car wants to turn over, but to no avail. There is no pattern to it. The car starts fine some days, and then sometimes it just doesn't want to start. I've had it towed to the dealer at least twice - the dealer couldn't find anything wrong. In June, when I took the car in for the same problem, the dealer had the nerve to tell me that the car would have trouble starting when it rains out - and that must be the problem. (are they insane - I asked myself - the car won't start when it rains? then they told me that I need to pump the gas pedal every time I start the car - a fuel injected car?) so, they replaced the fuel pump. But twice since the car has not wanted to start. The car has, since the day I leased it, randomly stalled right after starting. Why? no one seems to know. Then, this weekend while traveling on a highway, at about 70 mph the car suddenly lost all ability to maintain speed or accelerate. Luckily, I was able to get to the shoulder, and by that point the engine died. After repeated attempts over 20 minutes, the car started but the "service engine soon" light remained on. When attempting to get back on the highway to travel home from where I was, the car would not accelerate, starting making horrible banging noises and it smelled like something was burning. The car wouldn't accelerate and had no power. Luckily, I was able to get into an empty parking lot before having to call for a tow. There was a recall recently on the Sentra - relating to the engine and possible fires - and the parts replacement was performed - so I am left wondering what kind of junk I have been stuck with. . . It seems that it is one problem after another with this car.
