36 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2011

Pass rear axle seal blew out and leaked differential fluid. Differential fluid leaking on rear brake rotors which could cause brake failure, which was a major safety concern to me. At time of failure no suspension modifications had been done to vehicle. Also, the rear differential oil will slowly leak and cause the rear differential to lose fluid and fail. As this seemed to be a very common problem with the Nissan Titan, Nissan should address this issue and offer a permanent fix so we would not be faced with the safety issue in the future.

37 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2011

2004 Nissan Titan crew cab xe 4x4. Radiator has failed, rear differntial leaked, rear differential axle seals failed, front differential failed twice"c-clip", transmission leaked three times, front brake rotors replaced, driver side power window failed, something to do with the shifter fell out from underneath the dash, rear shakles for leaf springs are failing, numerous safety recalls and even more information bullitens that Nissan will not repair.

38 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2011

It was around 3:30 pm and I was just getting off of school. There was a good amount of snow on the ground so I decided to put it into 4 wheel drive. I drove for about 4 miles to get onto interstate 69. I started to accelerate and as soon as I got up to around 45mph, I heard a loud bang from the front end. The truck jerked to the left, I grabbed the steering wheel with both hands preventing from slamming into a semi in the lane beside me. Luckily I didn't get hurt. I know it is the differentials are completely trashed. I have an appointment at the Nissan dealership to get it diagnosed. I believe that I should not have to pay for the damage since this has been a major problem in the Titans. I bought a Nissan because I heard they were very reliable, and the company is willing to help. I sure do hope they help me out with this major defect in my truck. I really hope that this becomes a recall before someone really gets hurt, or even worse, killed.

39 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2011

I was accelerating from a stop on to the highway and felt/heard a "clunk" in the rear of the truck. Every time I turned I heard/felt a "clunk". It would even do it every so often at highway speed. The rear differential went out in the truck. I had to replace it.

40 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2011

I was at a stop light and as I took off getting my truck up to 15-20 mph I noticed a whining sound. It sounded as if the sound was in the rear of the truck. Come to find out that the rear differential was shot. The ring and pinion failed in the truck and shards of metal effected the gears as well.

41 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2010

Front differential/axle on my four wheel drive Nissan Titan is broken and leaking fluid, truck will not go into four wheel drive any more. I was at the Nissan dealership getting an inspection performed when they noticed the failure.

42 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2010

Rear differential bearing failure resulting in ring and pinion damage.

43 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2010

Grease leaking from right front axle. Axle will not stay engaged into front differential. Nissan says differential must be replaced.

44 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

2004 Nissan Titan se 4x4 has a known rear differential problem which leads to failure. Rear differential is leaking onto brakes/rotor. My vehicle has never towed anything and only has 58,000 miles. Nissan dealer says past warranty but admit known problem. I was told to contact Nissan directly. Differential fluid has metal in it. Unsafe conditions on all early models of this truck and Nissan is avoiding the issue they need to have an immediate recall before someone is killed.

45 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 08/26/2010

I have a 2004 Nissan Titan truck. A rear axle seal leaked. This is the second time I've had it leak. Differential gear oil leaks, which could get on the brakes. The first time, I had to replace the differential which also failed. I replaced the seal and bearings. This will be the second time I will be replacing them. If I had not checked it would have been a safety issue, as oil could get on the brakes. Also, due to Nissan's policy of not selling rear end parts (in the differential) I had to buy a whole new rear end the first time. I did not save the old parts.

46 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2010

At around 106,00 miles the rear driver's side axle seal blew out with enough force to destroy abs sensor and parking brake assembly. 2,000 miles later passenger side rear seal blew out and rear differential totally locked up. This is apparently a known defect that Nissan simply won't acknowledge. This repair ended up costing around $4,100 to repair at my expense, on top of the $900 paid previously to repair original seal failure.

47 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2010

Differential started to wine at about 58,000 miles. Noticed that the right rear-end of diff is leaking oil. Reported it to dealer, but they said nothing is wrong, do not hear anything, no idea what it is. Concerned that the oil may end up on the rear brake rotors in which case rear brake failure may occur. Rear end starting to fail now at 72,000.

48 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2010

2004 Nissan Titan 67000 miles, driving on regular road in good repair, rear differential starting making noise. Next day, differential locked up. Inspection showed broken teeth on ring and pinion gears.

49 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2010

I have just had the rear differential fail on my 2004 Nissan Titan at 95k miles. The truck had been used for towing but only about 5 times a year. It has a tow package and most of the miles on it are highway miles.

50 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 05/08/2010

Dealer claims front differential c clip for passenger side front wheel axle is defective. Axle moved outward approx. 1 inch and leaked oil at that location.

51 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2010

Rear differential went bad so I had the rear end replaced in June of 2010. In may of 2012 I noticed the rear end leaking fluid all over my rotors. This could cause my brakes to fail. Other Titan owners are reporting the same issue.

52 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 04/13/2010

2004 Nissan Titan rear axle differential seals leaking repeatedly. Dealership had replaced entire rear axle at 25,000 miles. 116,000 miles seals leaking again. Cost to repair estimated at $900. 00 to $3000. 00. Unable to just replace leaking seal, must replace entire portion of axle assembly.

53 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2010

1. There were no specific events leading up to the failure. 2. The c-clip that held my driver's side axle in the front differential of my 2004 4x4 Nissan Titan broke, causing the front differential to fail. I noticed a large puddle under the truck one evening and upon inspection, found that the axle had shifted 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch outside of the differential housing. The leak was coming from the ruined side seal caused by the c clip breaking. 3. I filled the differential up with new oil to avoid burning up the ring and pinion (didn't know it was already bad at the time) so that I could get the truck to the dealership. Once the problem was diagnosed, I was told the repair would be $1987. I checked around and no other automotive repair shop could fix this b/c they could not get the parts. Apparently the front differential for my truck is "captivated" which means only the dealerships can get them. To my understanding, it seems kind of like a monopoly on the parts.

54 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 01/19/2010

I have a 2004 Nissan Titan that had an issue with the differential in the rear end. In my case the rear end did not lock up at highway speed but the potential for that happening is there. After my problem occurred I did some research online and determined that my case was not an isolated incident. My truck has not been abused, has a towing package which has been used to tow a trailer only a few times and had only 62,000 miles at the time of the failure. From what I could determine Nissan redesigned the rear end I n the 2008 model and the problem has been reduced but that does not rectify the problem for the 2004-2007 models on the road. Unfortunately the Nissan solution is to replace the faulty rear end with the same type which in my case I chose not to do. From the information I could gather I was better off and safer going with an aftermarket differential which I decided to do to prevent potential problems in another 3-4 years or sooner. I realize there are not large numbers of Nissan Titans on the road but this does not make the situation any less dangerous for the drivers of them.

55 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2010

Was in 4 wheel drive tried to make a left hand turn, truck basically stopped in middle of a busy road until I heard a poping then was able to turn but 4 wheel drive failed. Now there are problems with my power train and front differential. Went to a garage they say missing a clamp, but dealership says no clamp and nothing wrong that it works fine. It most certainly does not work fine.

56 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2010

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Titan. The contact was driving approximately between 35 and 40 mph on normal road conditions. Suddenly, the four wheel drive failed to operate. The driver stated the failure was contributed to front differential. The vehicle is in the process of being repaired for the malfunctions. The failure mileage was 85,000.

57 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2009

I have 2004 Nissan Titan le and my rear differential just went on me this past Wednesday. My mechanic found the drain pinion inside.

58 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2009

Pulled slowly from a mcdonald's drive through into halted traffic (red light). As I pulled out of drive through, heard big bang and felt like I had been rear-ended. Tried to accelerate, truck would not move, and I could hear an audible clicking noise at what would have been tire rotation speed. Vehicle towed to dealer. Charged $3,798. 22 to replace rear differential. Waiting to hear back form Nissan to see if they will reimburse for at least cost of part(3223. 00. ).

59 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2009

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Titan. The contact stated that at 52,000 miles the right front tire differential seal failed. On September 16, 2009 he noticed a leak from the rear of the vehicle. Upon further inspection he concluded that the left front differential failed. He took the vehicle to the dealer, and was in the process of having the vehicle repaired. The failure mileage was 52,000. The current mileage was 70,500. The vehicle identification number was not available. Bl.

60 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2009

2004 Nissan Titan - 50,000k miles. Noticed a rear seal leaking onto by tires and on my brakes from the rear differential. There is a loud grinding sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. Unit has not failed as of date but service dept says any day it will. Grenada Nissan offered to replace because of known issues, but Nissan headquarters has not honored warranty to date, b/c it is 6 months too late. Will not honor warranty. Concerned if it fails at intersection or going down road an accident with bodily injury can occur. The fluid on brakes may also cause slippage while braking. Very dangerous. Nissan quoted repair near 3500$. Has been known issue with Nissan and NHTSA. Over 70 complaints filed, luckily no injury todate. This failure is a known issue with Nissan na, and have yet to fix flaw on this vehicle. Please beware that this is a safety issue to not only the vehicle's driver and passenger, but to others on the road as well.

61 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2009

Rear axle seal leak. 3rd failure of same seal in 6 months. Failure results in differential fluid leaking onto brakes resulting in braking limitations and failure, potential for fire. Dealer is presumably going to replace seal. . . Again.

62 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2009

Rear wheel seals continue to leak even after being replaced, differential and axle have too much play in the pumpkin area, causing the seals to break. The dealer had my truck for (14) days doing absolutely nothing after disassembling the differential due to a conflict between them and my extended warranty on who was going to pay for the ($3,000. 00) rear. This has left me in limbo so I contacted the manufacturer to discuss the modified rear that the dealer told me that the manufacturer had to resolve the problem. I am currently waiting to hear back from the manufacturer. They know about the problem on these 2004 Titans and have a modified replacement rear, then why is there not a recall?shouldn't the manufacturer be responsible and have decency to correct their problem free of charge to the consumer?.

63 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2009

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Titan. While at a stop light, the contact heard a loud noise. Afterwards, the vehicle accelerated. The vehicle was towed to a dealer and they stated that the rear differential failed and would cost $3,300 to repair. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 79,000.

64 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 03/26/2009

Right side rear axle seal leaking differential fluid on brake drum. Nissan Titan 04 le.

65 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2008

Catastrophic failure of rear differential ring and pinion assy. Original owner, no abuse. Gearset showed too much gear lash at around 48,000 miles, but exhibited no signs of failure until 62,000 miles. Nissan Titan with e-locker differential (off road package)>.

66 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2008

Right rear differential seal failed - leaked oil into right rear brake.

67 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2008

2004 Nissan Titan brakes not seeming to work as they should. Found rear axle seal has failed spraying differential fluid on brake rotor. Will have to have seal replaced.

68 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2008

I have a 2004 Nissan Titan,it has blown out 2 rear differentials. One was at 93,000 miles repair cost 2,900 dollars, and the other at 148,00 miles repair costs 2,600 dollars. The truck goes quickly from drivable to dangerous to drive. From research there is a defect in the differential venting design. You would think they should be responsible for at least the 2nd one.

69 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2008

Grinding noise from the rear of my 2004 Nissan Titan caused me to have it towed to the dealer. The dealer states that the differential is blown, and that new bearings and seals are needed to fix. The truck has only 71,000 miles, regularly serviced and has never towed a thing.

70 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 05/11/2008

Failure of rear end differential on 2004 Nissan Titan 4x4 se 63,113mi. Normal driving conditions. Requires entire new rear end approximately $3,500 repair cost.
