For the past year and intermittedly this SUV has had a problem with the fuel level indicator that sometimes works and other times doesnt works. My wife was driving on the interstate and the guage was reporting that she had a 1/4 tank of fuel but was out of gas while she was driving in the high speed lane forcing her to make a drive across both lanes to get out of the way of traffic. I reported this to the dealer ship and they said there was no recall for this on this vehicle. I pointed out to hime that there was for the year before vehicle and the year after why there wasnt when the setup on this gauge is the same system with a spring loaded pump and level arm in the years in the recall" it the same dam system" that the recall calls out in 05,06 and 08 but not the 2007 ?who at ntsb didnt look at the same as part being the problem and a where used and should have forced the recall on the system and years used. We have since stopped driving the Xterra but tell the gas level in the tank or estimate fuel used, and filling the tank doesnt always solve the problem, it will still show a 1/4 of a tank until you climb under the vehicle and bang the tank to free up the sending unit. .
Upon filling up the fuel tank, the fuel indicator reads empty. After 30-40 miles of driving, the fuel indicator returns to normal. At roughly 1/4 tank remaining on the indicator, the vehicle took 14. 7 gallons of gas, which means it was nearly empty. There is a recall for this problem that Nissan claims does not affect this vehicle, as identified by the VIN reported above. Clearly this is the issue addressed by campaingn id pc 042/NHTSA # 10v-075. Nissan denies this.
I filled up my gas tank and when I left, I noticed the "service engine soon" light and that my gas gage was in empty right after filling up. After a little while the service light would go off and the gas gage seemed to be working again. I did a little web research and found many other owners are seeing the same issue. I¿m willing to live with using my trip gage because the cost to fix is too much for a known issue. Love my Xterra just hate this issue. What I have found is that the federal mandate on ethanol mixed gas corrodes the censure is from one person thoughts. Also found that if you take it in, the code will say, p0463 which means you fuel sender unit sensor is out.
After filling up my gas tank, the fuel gauge does not immediately increase to full. The low fuel light remains on, and very slowly the needle creeps up to the top, probably after driving 30-50 miles. Also, the service engine soon light comes on and remains on for several days. This has occurred multiple times after filling the gas tank.
Upon filling my 2007 Nissan Xterra on July 11, 2011, I noticed that my service engine light was on and that my fuel gauge registered near zero. As I drove away the fuel gauge gradually rose to indicate a full tank. When I went to my Nissan dealer to check the error code he indicated that the problem was in the "fuel sending unit". Which would cost $300-$400 to repair since I had just exceeded the extended warranty mileage coverage limitations. In reading the descriptions of other owners of Nissan trucks and suvs it appears that this is a systemic problem and needs to be addressed through a factory recall.
I am also having issues with my fuel sensor unit in my 2007 Nissan Xterra at 38,500 miles. I filled at the gas station, getting ready to leave on vacation and then it went down to empty. The ses light came on, so decided to cancel my vacation! a couple of days later the needle went back to full. After filling gas 4 times, my ses light has gone off and it seems to be working, but do not let it go below half a tank to be sure. And, of course it is not part of the recall for the 2006 & 2008 models that use the same exact sensor unit. . . . How convenient for Nissan!.
After filling my tank, my gas gauge light was still on and the gauge still showed empty. Soon the "service engine soon" light came on. It will not reset. This is a costly repair and is obviously a defect, since there are so many other complaints regarding this same problem.
2007 Nissan Xterra with 57,000 miles. The service engine soon light came on after filling fuel tank. Checked the code at an auto part store. Code is p0463-faulty fuel level sensor. After doing some research found that this is a common fault on Nissan Xterras and frontiers. This failure could cause someone to run out of gas is they do not get the fuel level sensor replaced at a cost of $500 to $600.
