On 8/2542018 I was driving my 2005 Nissan Xterra down a highway in the suburbs of phoenix, az and when driving the vehicle abruptly began to jerk and go out of gear and would not accelerate. There was no warning on my dash that would tell me there was an issue and I had to wait in the car for approximately 2 hours in the 105 degree heat for a tow truck without water. I had the car towed to my mechanic and was told that the transmission fluid had been mixing with my coolant which was a common problem with the design of that year and Nissan tried to wipe this under the rug. I am in need of an entire new transmission and my car has 82k miles on it and is now 13 years old. Nissan agreed to pay for the cost for a period of time but if a recall had been issued, this problem could have been fixed for under "$150. I would greatly appreciate your assistance in helping me recover the damages that should be paid for by Nissan as they were aware of this problem and did nothing to assist me .

When outside temperature falls below 40 degrees Xterra will not start. Vehicle is stationary and not parked in a garage. Battery was replaced 11 months ago trying to fix the same problem. No other major issues with vehicle ever. Vehicle just towed yesterday dealer will not be able to diagnose until Monday.

This complaint is in reference to a 2007 Nissan Xterra off road 4x4 with180,900 miles. The transmission began to spontaneously downshift to low gears while moving at speeds above 25 mile per hour. At one point, the transmission seized and locked up while traveling at 45 miles per hour, which resulted in a sudden stop in the midst of the traffic flow on a two lane road. I took the vehicle to the Nissan dealer for service immediately. Inspection revealed coolant had leaked into the transmission via a leaking transmission cooler assembly integrated into the main engine radiator. The transmission sustained substantial internal damage from the coolant mixing with transmission fluid and circulating through the transmission. The transmission and engine radiator had to be replaced in order to make the vehicle roadworthy again. Total cost of the repair with taxes was $4800. 00. Nissan service manager and techs at dealership indicated this is a common problem for the Xterra and frontier model vehicles, yet no proactive action was taken during previous service appointments at 30,000 mile service intervals, routine maintenance appointments, and during yearly state vehicle inspections conducted at the same Nissan dealership.

Transmission downshifted on its own at 45 on a mild downgrade. Did it again later changing from one four lane highway to another, this time around 45-50 mph. Took the truck to local Nissan dealer for diagnosis as I took out an extended warranty with olympicare. The service adjuster was aware that '05-'09, even '10 models have a defect that allows radiator fluid to mix with transmission fluid, creating degradation of transmission and cooling system. After-market warranty is trying to dis-allow claim, citing Nissan's knowledge of this design flaw.
Nissan is well-aware of a design flaw that allows radiator fluid to cross-contaminate transmission fluid. They jokingly (at least their dealers) refer to it as a "strawberry milkshake". The antifreeze degrades transmission parts and causes transmission failure. A quick web search shows over 300 such cases.
Turned on vehicle in the morning to go to work. Engine check soon light came on and wouldn't go off. Dropped vehicle off at dealership. Say it is the purge volume control valve but they cannot get the computer to reset with their computer in the service department. Stated they may need to keep the vehicle more than one day.
