2 Horn Assembly problem of the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 09/24/2015

I have a 2002 Oldsmobile Alero which throughout the years has not started when you put the key in the ignition and turn. Numerous times I've had my car towed to a mechanic only to have it start once it gets dropped off. . . Hence they were never able to diagnose the issue. On September 24, 2015 again my car just didn't start. Lights, blinkers, horn all worked but it would not turn on. Finally had a mechanic come to my house and do a diagnostic which read security system lockdown. I went online and this apparently is an ongoing issue with this particular make and model. Hundreds of complaint are listed with the exact problem. Oldsmobile refuses to do a recall. I am a senior citizen on a fixed income. To fix this issue my mechanic wants $650. 00. I feel because this has been an issue that has been reported repeatedly with thousands of complaints Oldsmobile should be responsible to reimburse me.

3 Horn Assembly problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 02/01/2014

During the extreme cold period this past winter, the horn pad on my vehicle developed an issue where the horn stuck on during the early hours of the morning. Circuit had to be disabled in order to silence the horn. This is part of the driver side air bag system and cannot be easily, or inexpensively repaired, so the vehicle is without a working horn. In checking feedback sites on the Alero, this seems to be an common issue with aging Aleros that are left outside overnight in sub-freezing weather conditions.

7 Horn Assembly problem of the 2004 Oldsmobile Alero

Horn started going off and won't stop. This is definitely a safety issue and there are many reports online and it should be recalled.

8 Horn Assembly problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 07/25/2011

I recently purchased this vehicle. Last week, went to the dmv to take a driving test and the horn would not start. Brought the car back home, checked the fuse box. The horn fuse had been taken out of the car. Put a new fuse in and the horn would not stop. I must also include that due to this failure, my keyless car entry/lock will not beep. Also, I assume that my car alarm will not work because of this issue. Brought car to the mechanic, apparently in order to fix this problem, the airbag must be removed, costing approximately $1800 to repair. Obviously, I am not willing to pay this price and now will have to figure out a makeshift horn option. This is an extremely important issue that many people have had with this vehicle.

9 Horn Assembly problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 12/11/2010

I have a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero. The horn stopped working, checked fuse and that was fine. Took car to dealer that I bought it from. They informed me that the horn is attached to airbag module, to get horn to work again I would have to replace airbag module, approximate cost $1100. 00. I do not have that kind of money for repair. I need a horn. . . . . Not a new airbag module! why replace a perfectly good airbag module to get the horn to work? definite design flaw. Costly one at that.

10 Horn Assembly problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

Approximately 2 plus years ago my horn stopped working. I returned to the dealer from whom I bought the car. Car was purchased used, however I did purchase extended warranty. I was informed by dealer that the horn was connected to airbag module and that the contacts were shot. To get my horn back I would have to replace a perfectly good, I hope, airbag module at a cost of approximately $1100. 00. This a b. S. I cannot afford to pay for a new airbag module. I am still without a horn. There are times when having a horn is important. In my mind this is serious design flaw. How many people can afford to resolve this problem? to me this is a 'blatant' safety hazard. Will my airbag work properly if I ever need it????.

11 Horn Assembly problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 08/24/2009

My problem is with the horn/airbag assembly for this vehicle. It started about 3 years ago. The horn, in cold weather, honks. It would go off and continue in a constant honk (not a pulsing honk) and will not stop until the relay under the hood is pulled. If the relay is replaced and the weather is still cold it would go off/honk while riding down the road. The whole horn/airbag assembly has to be replace. I replaced the assembly 2 years ago. Now the new horn assembly goes off even in warm weather. Sitting in the driveway, going down the road, whenever, causing un-needed attention and distracting other drivers. The only solution has been to totally disable the horn/airbag by removing the relay under the hood leaving me with no horn at all. The cost for replacement is over $900. Money I can't afford to spend with no guarantee that the third unit won't do the same thing as the other two. When I enter a search on-line there are numerous complaints from other Alero owners reporting the same problem.

12 Horn Assembly problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 07/02/2009

Problems with electrical system- on several occasions, car has completely shut down in the middle of driving, disabling power steering. Also, horn likes to go off on its own- had to remove fuse to stop it.

13 Horn Assembly problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 06/27/2009

I used my horn to let someone know that they were in my lane, and all of a sudden my horn was stuck. The window clips on my car broke off, as I have read of these same complaints of other 2003 Oldsmobile Alero owners. I believe that there are serious defects of these two parts, and gm will not issue a recall to fix these problems. Due to that fact, I am unable to pass inspection because my car has to have a working horn and my window must be able to move up and down. Also a third complaint, there is now coolant that is starting to leak into my oil, which from what I understand could cause a fire!!.

14 Horn Assembly problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 04/15/2009

The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop but the contact was unsure of what the mechanic did to remedy the problem. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000 and the current mileage was approximately 93,000.

15 Horn Assembly problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 04/05/2009

When I was about to be side swiped by another vehicle from the adjacent line, I heavily leaned on the horn and it stuck and continued blowing. I finally stopped it from blowing by hitting it a couple of times. Thinking I had fix the problem, while sitting in the house it started blowing again. After doing this a couple more times I realize I had a problem. I had to remove the fuse to get it to stop.

16 Horn Assembly problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 12/11/2008

First problem: my horn decided to go off intermittently starting at 3am, finally had to pull the fuse to stop the noise. I keep the fuse with me, but now I have no horn and it is not safe, have had a few close calls. Second problem: turn signals fail to work at inconvenient times. Finally figured out that if I turn on my hazards for about 30 seconds then turn them off, the turn signals will work again properly. Third problem: security light comes on, vehicle will not start. Been to the dealer numerous times for this, they finally told me to just put the key in the "on" position for about 10 minutes, and once the security light goes off the car will start. These are all safety issues that need to be addressed by gm.

17 Horn Assembly problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 10/03/2008

Purchased vehicle August 2003 at 29,000 miles. Front left wheel bearing bad just inside warranty time - under 36,000 miles. Shortly after, front right wheel bearing went bad - not in warranty. Now at 129,000 miles, front left wheel bearing is bad again. Not using oem equipment this time as it isn't cost effective to pay for oem equipment - when it obviously lacks quality. I'm assuming my front right wheel bearing will go bad soon - better start saving for that repair! next issue - horn blows without provocation and will not stop - 3:00 in the morning. Next issue: fuel issue, where you have to turn the key to the on position for 10 minutes then car will start. Does not happen all the time but usually when you do not have the extra 10 minutes.

18 Horn Assembly problem of the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 09/01/2008

My blinkers on my 2002 Oldsmobile Alero don't work most of the time. My horn does not work.

19 Horn Assembly problem of the 2001 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 05/16/2008

Horn of the car did not work after service for replacement of flasher unit. No trauma or injury to car. Inspection of car, it was found to be cracked steering wheel at the base and it damaged the horn ring. We were told that we could not drive the car until fixed as unsafe to drive. The dealer stated they had only ever seen 1 other such case in 37 years of service. Car must have had a defective steering wheel which may have caused an accident, injury or death.

20 Horn Assembly problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 12/10/2007

2003 Oldsmobile Alero. Horn went off continually at approx. 330 h. And failed to stop until it eventually died at 400 h. Now I am left without a horn, because I will not pay $800 to resolve the issues of gm's faulty manufacturing that causes the switches to contract and contact some stupid wire. Dear gm, I love the japanese ;).

21 Horn Assembly problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 11/16/2007

Bought the 2003 Alero Oldsmobile in March 2007, not realizing the ongoing problems with the stalling and not starting issues. Many times with children in the car have been stranded when car would not start. First time, replaced battery; second time and third time took to mechanic spent $390. 00 to attempt to fix car however still has issue. Mechanic said it had electrical issue with security system conflicting with wireless internet radio waves. Had to have it towed into the mechanic. Soon after a week the problem occurred again:I read on a automotive forum to put key on the "on" position for 10 minutes wait for the security light to stop blinking and then start the car (should work it stated) it worked however it is now sometimes a daily problem. I now allow 10 minutes leway in departure to allow for this aggravating problem to arise. This problem is a high security issue not safe to be stranded with single mom with kids in parking lots and as well as being out to town. Has caused to miss work. This is a ongoing issue and not sure how to remedy the problem. To add to the problem, the horn has been sounding off (as it it stuck position) for the last week 11/12/2007while driving another occurrence 11/16/07 park position key not in the ignition at 2:00am in a apartment complex. 23 Horn Assembly problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 08/04/2007

The horn had never been easy to use, nor did it always function, but suddenly it would not shut off, then it completely died. On taking the car to the dealership, they diagnosed a short-circuit and pronounced that it would cost $1,390. 00 + tax to repair, as they would need to replace the air bag in addition to the 2 horns that the car apparently has.

27 Horn Assembly problem of the 2001 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 12/26/2006

Horn may or may not sound when button depressed. Problem is random. I have inspected fuse, swapped horn relay with a known good unit of same amperage, and checked connection at the horn itself. Button for horn in center of steering wheel is apparently the problem. Horn sounds roughly half the time when button depressed.

28 Horn Assembly problem of the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 07/10/2006

30 Horn Assembly problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 06/02/2006

Driver's side window motor has been replaced three times in the last 4 years. Rear driver's side window motor has also been replaced in the last year. Amazing how this keeps happening over and over again. Also, my horn has gone off in the middle of the night several times without anything setting it off. There is no way to turn it off once it goes. Each time it was 3 or 4 in the morning and each time I had to drive to a remote location just to disconnect the horn. Of course, the first couple of times I had no idea how to do this but after a while you get to know these things. I have had the horn replaced on several occasions without any success. Now I am being told that it is the horn pads located in the steering wheel. Of course, that is another $800 - $1000 job on top of the 4 windows that cost about $400 each and the horns with ran me about $150 to $200 each.

31 Horn Assembly problem of the 2001 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 05/01/2003

Several problems on the 2001 Oldsmobile Alero that other owners seem to be having as well. Turn signals went out/ gas gauge went out/ coolant gasket broke, and horn would sound randomly (had to eventually pull the fuse).

32 Horn Assembly problem of the 2001 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 04/14/2003

In Feb. 2003 I had surgery and did not drive my car for about a week. When I finally drove my car, my drivers side window would not roll down. A couple of days later it started working and now has a grinding noise to it. Recently my horn stopped working completely. I replaced the relay switch and it still will not work. Now, my turn signals work whenever they want to. The only way I can get them to work is to press my hazard switch and now it is getting to where it will not work. And last but not least my air conditioner is not blowing properly. On the 2 first settings it barely blows, if I press on my brakes it feels as if it completely quits. I have also noticed that when I roll down my windows the interior lights will dim and the car engine power will decline. I have had my car for 1 yr. I purchased it used with less than 25,000 miles. I feel these issues should be addressed because they can lead to safety issues. I was changing lanes and my blinkers failed and was almost hit by another car, at that time and still do not have a horn to blow to warn them that I was changing lanes also. The dealer I purchased the car from thinks that I am crazy. That I am a hypocondriac. They are uncooperative and basically refuse to help me. I feel I should not have to pay for something that apparently a lot of Alero owners are going through.
