I was driving down the street when the car just cut off on me with no warning. I had to force the steering wheel to turn while other cars where trying to keep from hitting me from behind . Finally got the car off of the main street and onto a side street, until I was able to get the car towed . After having the car towed and it not being able to restart a mechanic told me that the anti theft system went out on the car so now I am without a car and no way to get it fixed because as I was told that they were having a problem with this on most older gm models.

When trying to start the anti-theft light comes on and blinks you must wait 10 mins to restart and sometimes the vehicle will start or you have to wait the recycle till again. Gm did a recall on the key itself to add a hole in the key for the weight situation, but did not help the ignition problem of starting this vehicle. My question is why hasn't this problem been address yet? I have several complaints on this problem.

I have had the same problem for a while! about 3 months ago I get in my car to go to school and work and guess what the car would not start and I waited and it still did not start. I called the towing company and they took it to the mechanic and it started 10 times and they could not find anything wrong. So for the last 2 months it has drove fine. Well last Monday morning it did it again would not start so I had to miss work and call a tow truck and took it to the dealership and the car would turn over but not start. I just paid 430. 00 to put a cam sensor in and now it seems to be running. I put a new anti theft lock system in around 2011. I see my car is one that is in a recall and I hope they can get this fixed.
The contact owns a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 45 mph over a bump, the security warning light illuminated as the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence where a private mechanic reset the security system but the failure recurred on multiple occasions. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign id number: 14v400000 (electrical system) and stated that the part needed for the repair was unavailable. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 210,000.

The vehicle was able to restart after several attempts. The failure occurred on multiple occasions. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign id number: 14v400000 (electrical system) however, the part needed for the repair was unavailable. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000.
The contact owns a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero. The contact stated that the anti-theft system independently activated while the vehicle was being driven at 70 mph, causing the engine to stall. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The incident was recurring and the contact stated that the vehicle could not be immediately restarted. The vehicle was not inspected or repaired. The failure mileage was 22,000 and the current mileage was 22,210.
The security light began coming on but would go off after I restarted the car. I thought it was an electrical problem. However, in October 2009, I became stranded and had to be towed which cost $150. The dealership informed me it was part of my security system and I replaced that for about $400. I do have the invoice for exact figures. Then in March of 2011, the security light came on again. Not wanting to become stranded again, I brought my car to the dealership the very next day and was informed that another part of the pass lock system needed replacing. This was $450. They also informed me that there is a third part to this system. It is only a matter of time that this part fails.
I own a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero GLS. Sometimes, my car doesn't start and the "security" light flashes. According to owners manual, I have to wait 10 minutes for the light to stop flashing before I can start the car. When the anti-theft warning light was illuminated, the vehicle would fail to start for at least ten minutes. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 59,000. This has been an on-going and intermittant occurence for many months. I believe it's an electrical wiring problem, connected to the signal lights. My signal lights were recently repaired for which Oldsmobile was supposed to reimburse me because this was a recall item, but I never received a check.
The contact owns a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero gl. The contact stated that when the anti-theft warning light was illuminated, the vehicle would fail to start for at least ten minutes. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 89, 000.
I have a 2003 olds Alero in which the passlock theft deterrent system keeps acting up, shutting my car down completely. This has happened many times prior to today (6-19-10) however those were instances that I was trying to start the car and after doing the "key in the on position for 10 minutes"method, the car would start. Today however the car stalled as I was driving down a busy street. I was completely stranded. I've owned the car now for 4 years, and the passlock has sporadically engaged a total of 10 times, including today. However, unlike the previous enabling, my car now sits on a trailer unwilling to start at all. Having a car completely quit while driving down a road is a life threatening situation and I would like to have it remedied immediately by the manufacturer, as I feel the passlock system should be recalled.

The contact owns a 2002 Oldsmobile Alero. The contact was driving 30 mph when the security warning light illuminated. The contact then pulled over and shut off the vehicle. He was not able to restart the vehicle and it was towed to a local repair facility. The mechanic then advised that the anti-theft system malfunctioned and a keyless starter would need to be installed to correct the failure. The dealer was not contacted and the vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 102,000 and the current mileage was 108,000.
While driving my 2001 Oldsmobile Alero, everything seemed fine until I made a left turn at a light and the car suddenly dies while driving about 25 mph. This is the very first time the car has died, period. Luckily it did not happen during my 30 mile drive to work on the interstate. After several minutes of sitting in the car with the ignition off, the car dings about 6 times. No lights are on, not even the security light, (nothing that is indicative to a malfunction). It does not seem to be an electrical issue. When I took the vehicle to a friend's shop, the fuel pump tested fine. He came up with a passlock issue, and told me that if that is the actual problem it would most likely be expensive to repair. This car has driven quite well for months up until yesterday. If you let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour it will start right up but then die again within 10-15 minutes. There is no blinking security light, no diagnostics showing that anything is wrong period with the exception of a possible passlock issue. I cannot risk driving this vehicle. I am missing work because of this, on top of the fact that I will have some kind of repair cost, and not knowing exactly what the issue is, am afraid I will be taken advantage of if I go to a dealer that actually knows what the problem is. When I mention this to places I call they tell me that there is no way that the car would just die while it's in motion, almost as though it's completely unrealistic for any vehicle to stop working in normal driving conditions. I wish it were so! I wouldn't be so afraid to drive it if that were the case! at this point seems to be a costly death.

For unknown reasons the passlock system fails and the car will either not start or while driving it will shut off at any time cutting power to the power brakes and steering. Causing a possible loss of control.
2004 Oldsmobile Alero: passlock antitheft system activates about one out of 10 attempts to start the vehicle. I have to wait ten minutes before the car will start. I have been stuck in bad parts of town several times while waiting and been late to work so much that I have to go out ten minutes early and leave the car run. Gm has refused to fix the problem.

Since 2006, on six different occasions the security light flashes and two to three days later the system locks down and the car does not start. I am stranded and have to have my car towed. Each occurrence has cost me anywhere from $600-$800. Towing fees, taxis to and from work, and use of other individuals' cars are additional expenses. I only take the car to the dealer for the repairs. Each time they tell me a different feature on the anti-theft system has failed and needs to be replaced. I have asked the dealer repeatedly to dismantle the anti-theft device and they say they cannot. Who is going to steal a 2002 Alero? I am a single mother with two children in two different colleges. This Alero is our only car. To date I have spent $3000 on this "sophisticated" anti-theft system. Help me please. I cannot afford to purchase another car.
The contact owns a 2002 Oldsmobile Alero purchased in 2003. She stated that a year after purchasing the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start. The security warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. She adhered to the instructions given in the owner's manual to override the system failure; however, the process was too lengthy to attempt each time she has to start the vehicle. No repairs were made to the vehicle to date to correct the failure. The dealer advised her not to invest in correcting the failure since it was a defect in the design of the vehicle. The failure and current mileages were under 118,000.
1. Security lights flashes 2. Then when I turn off my car and go to turn it off it will not start it is because of the passlock system no work. . Which cause my car to not work and be to be stuck where I am!! and I am a under female in college, so this worries me that one day my car will not start and I am going to get hurt or kidnapped! 3. Nothing!! I have to do something weird with letting car sit for a while for it to work. . So I am not safe! this has happened about 3 times now!.
On two occasions, I had difficulty starting the car when I turned on the ignition but after about 15 minutes I would start it up again and it ran fine. While this happened, the security light would light up and continue to do so randomly. I took my car to the dealer and they cleared the security code once but the light turned on again after about a month which means the anti theft system is activated and preventing the car from starting. The engine also randomly stalls while driving at slow speeds, exiting the freeway ramp, and when the vehicle is coming to a stop at a traffic light . This incidence has occurred too many times to count, sometimes more than once within minutes of each other. Before it occurs, the acceleration from the gas peddle is a little rough and the engine shakes and vibrates when stopped. I have to shift the gear to neutral and turn the key to restart the engine to run again right in the middle of the road! luckily I haven't had any accidents only because I know how to control it. But its really dangerous and getting annoying since I never know when its going to stall again. I took it to the dealer on 5 occasions and they could not find the source of the problem after having tried to clean the fuel injector which did not help. Their scanning system could not pick up any error codes. I don't know what else to do.
The olds Alero has a defective passlock theft deterrent system. It shows up when you insert your key in the ignition, turn it, hear the engine cranking, only to fail to start. The dashboard's red warning light, security, flashes on and off. It believes it is being stolen, thus shutting off the gas to the engine. The problem actually stated 4 months after I bought my car, which I purchase used from a dealer, I believe im the 2nd ower. This issure happens about once or twice every 3 weeks or so. My dad actually thought it was the battery contacts because they were loose, so he tightened them up, then it took care of the problem for about a month. The another strange issue came up, about 3 months ago, as my car sat in park for about 2 hours, just out of the blue the horn started to "blow" like the alarm was set off, but the lights were not flashing so it wasnt that, about 20 minutes it did this til it blew the fuse for the horn. And now im without a horn in my car, which is not very safe. So I changed the fused, the horn worked for 1 day, then blew again, I changed the actual horn and another fuse, and just 3 days ago, I heard in the middle of the night, my horn going off again for no reason, and the fuse blew again, driving with no horn. So im driving my car that has this anti-theft feature and I dont know if its working from 1 day to the next, the security lights stays on my dashboard so I know something is apparently wrong with it, usually that when I know, my car will not start when I see that light come on and I have to do the trick with sitting in the car with the ignigtion on for 10 minutes before starting it. I googled this problem to see if anyone else is having this problem and found hundred of people tht are, contacted gm and olds corp, they say there is not recall on the system because there is nothng wrong with it. Something has to be for all the customers to be having the same problems and apparently is has been goin on for years and they wont help.
I purchased a 2002 Alero from the dealership. It had a certified sticker and a warranty on the window. After signing all papers and putting $2,000 down on it, the sales man informed me that there was no warranty due to the age of the veh. About a month later, I began having issues with it. 9-5-07 the brakes were squeaking and making loud noises. I had the dealership repair it under warranty. On 9-10-07, the front wheels began to shake and heard a loud noise as if the wheels were going to fall off. This happened by the dealership as I was going to work. I dropped it off and it was repaired. They said it was their fault due to a few nuts or bolts fell off. 5-6-08 is when the car completely left me stranded. Turn the key, all lights come on and seat belt alert came on. It sounded like it wanted to start but it wouldn't. I had it towed to the dealership. It cost me $588. 00 to repair it. They said it was the pass lock sensor. 9-3-08 my car left me stranded again. It had the same issue as the first time. It sounded like it wanted to start but it wouldn't. Had it towed to the dealership again. They quoted me $350 for repair it. They said it was the anti-theft mechanism in the ignition switch. After speaking to the manager, I paid a $50 deductible and the veh was supposed to be repaired. On about 5-9-09 the veh left me stranded again. It displayed the same problems as the prior 2 incidences. I had the veh towed back to the dealership and this time they said after the diagnostic, it was the bcm and would be approx $480 to repair it. A few days later, I had a friend to help me tow it to my home. I turned the key and it started up fine. I called the dealership and I was told it is the bcm and if the veh sits long enough, it may reset and start up. He also said it may leave me stranded again. I have been driving the veh locally and on 11-27-09, the veh will not start.
Passlock theft deterrent system keeps disabling vehicle. It is currently in the shop for the 4th time for this problem. The security light comes on, then the vehicle eventually will not start.
Bought the 2003 Alero Oldsmobile in March 2007, not realizing the ongoing problems with the stalling and not starting issues. Many times with children in the car have been stranded when car would not start. First time, replaced battery; second time and third time took to mechanic spent $390. 00 to attempt to fix car however still has issue. Mechanic said it had electrical issue with security system conflicting with wireless internet radio waves. Had to have it towed into the mechanic. Soon after a week the problem occurred again:I read on a automotive forum to put key on the "on" position for 10 minutes wait for the security light to stop blinking and then start the car (should work it stated) it worked however it is now sometimes a daily problem. I now allow 10 minutes leway in departure to allow for this aggravating problem to arise. This problem is a high security issue not safe to be stranded with single mom with kids in parking lots and as well as being out to town. Has caused to miss work. This is a ongoing issue and not sure how to remedy the problem. To add to the problem, the horn has been sounding off (as it it stuck position) for the last week 11/12/2007while driving another occurrence 11/16/07 park position key not in the ignition at 2:00am in a apartment complex. To quick resolve issue I tapped the horn on steering column it would go off again, then had roommate disarm the horn wire.
Security light flashes on dash board. Vehicle will not start until 10 minutes, after the light stops. I had this same problem a year ago in had it fix at a gm dealer for about $360. 00. This is a ongoing issue with gm vehicle.
I put the key in the ignition and the car does not start followed by the word security flashing on the dashboard car will not start. I have to wait about 15 mins and hope it won't do it again. I have read up online and seems this is a common occurrence related to the passlock system on Oldsmobile cars.
On 9/26/2007 my 2002 olds Alero refused to start, I finally had to leave at at my job, it started the next day, I called the dealer (I had purchased it from drivetime) in Nov 2006, they stated that I had to bring it to their approved mechanic, I took it there, their mechanic stated it was the fuel pump and it would cost 755. 00. That included the drivers window which fell into the door for the second time, I called drivetime who then put me on a repair assistance program, I drove the car home, that same day the car would not start again, it is now January 2008 and I still do not have a working vehicle and am refusing to pay for it. The mechanic called me back and said that it is the computer and he cannot fix it I now have to have it towed to the nearest dealer who may or may not fix it free of charge. I think its a disgrace, that a company can make such a piece of junk have all these complaints on it and nothing is done. I for one am not going to pay one more cent, the dealer could keep the car, and do with it whatever he wants, I realize this is a reposession but I am not a rich person and it is obvious that problems will only get worse with this vehicle, I think there should be a class action suit against gm, olds, drivetime for selling the lemon knowing all the problems these vehicles have.
The contact owns a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start and the anti theft light warning light illuminated intermittently. After ten minutes, the contact was able to start the vehicle and the anti theft light turned off. The problem persisted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000.
When the vehicle is worked on by a mechanic, such as replacement of the fuel filter, it disrupts some component in the car and makes the passlock security system think that the car is being stolen. This shuts the car down and doesn't allow it to be started again. This could be deadly if traveling at high speeds or in heavy traffic.
Lock cylinder needs replacing. Car will not start.
The passlock feature. Has left me and several, several unhappy Alero owners stranded. This is a very bad and expensive idea and I have been without the car now for 2 months. I hate this car. I can not believe this has not been a recalled issue.
The passlock 1 anti-theft system fails on my vehicle. Causes the fuel system to shut down and vehicle to either not start or shut down. It has done this while sitting in my garage, at stop signs, lights and as I was turning with in front of on coming traffic (lucky I was not hit). This 1st occurred in 2007. At that time, it happened daily until my car finally would not start and I had to have it towed from my garage to a service center. The fault codes showed it was this system. They replaced the passlock cylinder and reprogrammed my keys. I was told at the time, it may not be a permanant fix as there is a high rate of repeat problems. This was the 2nd time I had the car at the shop, I had the issue a month earlier, but due to my battery being run down trying to start my car, it was assumed to be a battery issue. So after replacing the battery it did run for a month before starting this all over again. My car is now at the shop with the most likely the same trouble. It was over $600 the first two times to fix my car, and I feel can be a real safety issue given the fact I was almost hit, not just stranded. I was also told by a g. M rep. They had never heard of this issue, or the dealers the rep. Called. There are hundreds of internet post for this problem.
Ignition system failure is making me crazy I have talked to several mechanics about this and am told this is common where is the recall! I am tired of missing work due to this issue. This will be the last g. M. Car I will ever own.
While driving down the road, the car shut off, I was unable to get the car restarted and was almost rear ended by another vehicle. I was told that the passlock engaged while the car was in operation thereby telling the computer that the car had been "stolen" and to shut off the fuel pump. I have since learned that this "passlock" failure in gm vehicles is a very common complaint and only the "dealership" is able to repair it. The approx cost is $900. 00 in which the dealership will replace the ignition and bcm module with another defective part. Other individuals with the same problem have broken down at night in unsafe locations, on the highway, etc and although general motors has received several complaint's they have failed to issue a recall.
The car will not turn on. The security light blinks on and off, indicating that the system is not being reset. I have tried unlocking and locking the car repeatedly. I tried cleaning the iginition switch, replaced spark plugs, air filter, etc. The keys do not have the micro chip in them, so I know it is not the key.
- the contact owns a 2002 Oldsmobile Alero gl. The contact stated that the there was a a sensor cylinder failure in the ignition that was effected by the theft system on the vehicle. The contact stated that the dealer said that the vehicle's computer believed itas being stolen, and kills the engine, this happened on 4 different occasions.
