2001 Oldsmobile Alero - defective theft deterrent system: I have owned this car 2 years and have had to get the ignition replaced 3 times because the theft deterrent system keeps periodically believing that the car is being "stolen" and shuts the car down. Most times, you can't get the ignition key to even turn in the ignition. At other times, the starter just turns over but won't crank. Not to mention that each time this has happened, the expense involved in having to get the car towed to the Oldsmobile dealership, as well as the inconvenience of having your car running fine one moment and suddenly, with no warning whatsoever, having your car completely shut down. Oldsmobile, gm, or somebody needs to recall these cars and fix this defective theft deterrent system.

Car turns over but will not start. It has left me stranded 3 times so far. I have spend over a thousand dollars on parts alone, and now it is in the shop for I new fuel pump. (another $450) I have read many reports of the something happening to other people and no recall. It would really help to have a recall to save people their hard earn money on a problem that should have been fixed before the car was sold. I have been late to work many times, had to catch buses, and walk many miles because of this car. I have paid over $300 on rides to and from work just so I can pay for parts for the car to only run for a week. So please can you have a recall issued so me and countless other can have the good running car we all pay for in the first place. Thank you jarvis joyner.
Security light, anti-theft device.
The security light on my dash will come one about 3 to 5 times per month. This results in my car not starting. The first time I was alone and had to phone for someone to help me. When they arrived the car started. After this, I realized the car would start after about ten minutes. I work with another Alero owner and she had the same problem and had to pay a very large amount of money to fix the problem. She also said that every Alero owner she knows has had the same problem. I have not visited a dealership due to the cost, and I feel a recall should be made.
Three times my vehicle would not start. It was towed into caldwell, ohio dealership and they could find nothing wrong with it. It started when it got there. Three days later in latrobe, PA. Same thing. Car placed with arnold palmer motors. Fixed with new programming and new computer chip. Two days later, same problem in cambridge, ohio. Finally fixed at dunning motors. My cost: over 500 dollars.
For the past 4 years my olds Alero has refused to start due to a malfunction with the built in security system. This happens one a week and you have to wait for 15 minutes to try and start the car again. The dealer wanted a couple hundred dollars to fix it. I have checked forums and this is a common problem. Why doesn't gm acknowledge the problem and fix it for us. I guess they want us to buy a dependable car from someone else.

Auto stalled out twice when slowing down to yield, stopping completely in traffic areas so that the vehicle had to be pushed aside. After the first time the battery was replaced. The second time, the battery was jumped and the car started. The alternator was tested at that time and indicated excess current flow. During this period of two weeks, on several occasions intermittently, the parked vehicle would crank but the engine would not turn over. Each time, with numerous attempts, the vehicle would start and would perform for a day or so then repeat the problem. Inspections indicated that the battery and alternator were fine and there were no other indicators of cause. Finally, when brought to a dealership, they found that the ignition cylinder had failed and the pass lock security system was shutting down the car because it did not recognize the key. The cylinder was replaced and new keys created, but the problem occurred again. Further investigation found that the ignition module has failed also.

Ignition/anti-theft security system fails. Car won't start. "security" light flashes red when I try to turn the key. Must wait about 10 minutes for light to go off. Also, security light comes on as I am driving and remains that way until I turn the car off. On one occasion, car stalled while driving with light on. This problem began last year. I took the car to a gm dealer and had the anti-theft and ignition system replaced. It cost more than $500. 00. Today, exactly one year after, the problem started again. Same everything all over again.
: the contact stated the security light on the vehicle intermittently illuminates at least once a week. When the security light illuminates the vehicle will not start. The light goes off in about ten minutes allowing the vehicle to start. The dealership has not been alerted.
My 2000 Oldsmobile Alero has problems starting due to a defect in the passlock system. The security light will illuminate while driving and I have had 5 instances where the vehicle will not start at all. I read the owners manual and followed all the instructions provided. There is no reason for such a flaw, I have taken excellent care of my vehicle.
The consumer was able to start the vehicle, however, it will not continue to run. The ignition switch/theft deterrent needed to be replaced, per the dealer.
I am a fire investigator looking at a 2000 olds Alero 2 dr. The vehicle was bought new in September 2000. There have been @5 reports of the alarm system light coming on at different times. The car has reportedly been to the dealership on @ 5 occasions and the prolem persisted. The owner was told the problem could not be fixed because they did not know what the problem was. The computer was replaced 2 or 3 times, the wiring harness was reported to have been replaced??? the alarm system is factory. The added stereo has been ruled out by the dealer. I would like a service/recall bulletin and information on this problem.
The contact owns a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero. The contact stated that the vehicle would not start and the security light illuminated. The failure occurred several times. The dealer stated that the lock cylinder and the ignition switch failed. No repairs were made. The current mileage was 80,000 and failure mileage was 60,000. Updated 01-15-08. Updated.
On several different occasions security light remains on during the duration of driving. When we try to start the car, the security light flashes and the car won't start. Oldsmobile roadside assistance recomends leaving the key in the on position until the security light stops flashing, taking the key out for 30 seconds, and then trying to start it again. This normally fixes the problem temporarily. However, when you have small children in the car, it becomes a real hazard to be waiting for your vehicle to start. I've contacted the dealer and they say that there is no recall to fix this problem.
My 2001 Oldsmobile Alero will not "turn over". Mechanic says anti-theft is keeping me from steeling my car. Both keyless entries will not work. Has not started for 6 days. Still will not start. Closest Oldsmobile dealership over 30 miles away. Afraid of what it will cost to fix. This is frustrating. Turn signals are fixed but would only work when they wanted to. I had them repaired last year.
Security light starts to flash while driving - after shutting it down it will crank but not start.
All four of my window regulators have failed within a period of 2 months, I have replaced 3 of the four, the left rear door still has not been replaced do to the cost of parts for this car, in adition, I have had to replace the front calipers, brake pads and rotors on this vehicle 2 times within a period of 1 year, just before the last time I replaced them, my rear calipers went out, they will engage, but will stay locked, only releasing after I drive for about 20 feet or so, I have also experienced problems with the security system activating itself and not allowing me to start the car for at least 10 minutes ( the time it takes the system to recycle itself). In adddition, my door pannels coverings are all coming separated accross the top of of them, again do to the cost, I have failed to replace them. Unfortunatly this happened before I knew that so many people where having problems with the Oldsmobile Aleros, so I did not retain the old parts.
(1)my car refused to start one Friday while I was trying to leave work. Everything worked (lights, radio), but the engine wouldn't "turn over. " couldn't start Saturday, tow-truck driver couldn't start Monday. Call from service center Tuesday, car started when tech tried, put through diagnostic tests, nothing found wrong. Three weeks later, same thing happened. Car starts again at service center. Technician tells me the theft deterrent module needs replacing. Car "thinks" its being stolen, so it cuts off the fuel pump. Motion of being put on tow truck probably causes shortage. Cost $400+ (2)signal lights some times stop working for several hours.
The contact owns a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero. While driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle failed to accelerate and the steering wheel seized. The contact merged to the shoulder of the road and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle restarted, but the failure recurred twice. The dealer stated that the anti-theft mode switch needed to be replaced. The contact received a recall notification for NHTSA campaign number: 14v400000 (electrical system). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 700.
Consumer states that the securty pass-lok system became defective and would not allow the vehicle to start.
