Steel hydraulic brake line to rear brakes ruptured while driving (braking), resulting in complete loss of brake fluid and braking ability. Inspection showed brake line was corroded through. Rupture was located in solid tubing under vehicle, below driver's seat, where the brake line turned and headed towards rear of vehicle. Vehicle was safely brought to a stop using parking brake. Chrysler dealer service department replaced 4 rear brake lines, 2 flex lines, booster and master cylinder. The corroded tubing was replaced with flexible steel wrapped lines. While driving down a steep hill the brakes went to the floor and the red "no brake" light came on. I was going around 30 miles an hour and luckily was in the country. I drove into a farmers field and put on the emergency brake. The dealership replaced the brake equipment including the master cylinder even though nothing was showing on their computer. A few days later I was driving home from work and came to a stop sign, put on brakes and they went to the floor again. I hit the vehicle in front of me. This problem doesn't occur all the time and they are not able to recreate the problem. I am waiting to see what happens with this from the dealer and their insurance CO. I will also most likely file a complaint with daimler-Chrysler. This vehicle was a lemon buy back for braking problems that were supposedly fixed in 2000.

VIN #p4gp44r9vr169548 '97 Plymouth Grand Voyager
this vehicle has been to both d & e Dodge in wilmington, nc and to national Dodge in jacksonville, nc for repairs to the brakes, and the brakes still do not work. The brake system fluid, drums, rotars, master cylinder - everything seems to be ok, they say, when we pick it up, but, when you apply the brakes, brakes are "spongy" and sometimes there are no brakes at all. It seems pretty fair for a short period of time and then becomes increasingly worse. This has been appearing for approximately one year. Please recommend someone in the Chrysler organization that can fix the brakes on this vehicle. It is very dangerous, and we are tired of this problem. I am afraid my family is going to be killed and perhaps kill someone else, too. The car has an extended warranty purchased at the time the car was resold to us, which the dealerships say does not cover the brake system. However, it does cover at least some part of the brake system. The thing is, we have paid out money for its repair and have had to do without the car for days at a time and still have a braking system that is not working properly. There is something going on that is definitely a "safety-related defect" that no one can find as yet.

The incident occurred with my wife driving the vehicle. My brother-in-law and 2 daughters, morgan 9 years old and madison, 5 years old, were passengers. They were traveling west on interstate 78 in new jersey just past exit 11 when they smelled a slight unusual odor. At this location on the interstate is a mountain, known as "jugtown mountain. " my wife put her foot on the brake to slow down, concerned about the odor and found the brake pedal went to the floorboard. Traveling downhill and gaining speed she panicked briefly, but managed to get to the right lane and used the emergency brake and lower gears to slow the vehicle down. As the interstate leveled out she pulled the vehicle over and contacted myself and aaa for towing service. We had the vehicle towed to clinton Chrysler Jeep Dodge in clinton, NJ. After inspecting the vehicle the service manager informed me that this happens often to many vehicles. He was very courteous and helpful, but I questioned his response as I thought it was unusual that a catastrophic failure of the vehicles brake system that could have resulted in a life threatening situation was something that occurred "often to many vehicles. " he further explained that material can build up in the calipers and heat the brakes up, potentially resulting in brake fluid evaporating. He asked how long it was since my last brake work and I explained to him the two previous routine brake jobs and when the occurred. He stated that more than likely I would have to have brake pads and/or shoes again and they would check the master cylinder. With this being the extent of my knowledge of brakes I asked for a price quote to repair the vehicle.
